Today in Boston Celtics history, Hall of Fame Indiana Pacers legend Reggie Miller declined the offer from Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge to join the 2007-08 team, as Ainge aimed to ***** emble a competitive roster that summer. Miller, a prominent star known for his exceptional shooting from beyond the arc, had been retired for two seasons following an 18-year career with the Pacers. Even so, he seriously contemplated the offer on getting Ainge's call.
"I'm always flattered when my name is mentioned as someone who can still help an NBA team win a championship," offered the then-NBA ***** yst for TNT via ESPN's JA Adande. "(I have) contacted Reggie and he is contemplating a comeback with us," shared Ainge on the prospect of adding Miller to the juggernaut he ***** embled. Ringless despite nearly two decades in the NBA, the offer was appealing to Miller even after the long break as a player and his relatively advanced age.
In the end, the prospect of life on the road was too much for the former Pacer to endure, or so he said at the time.
"I can still shoot with the best of them," offered the then-reigning all-time 3-point shooter (Ray Allen was still some time away from passing him in total 3-pointers made) via Adande.
"Mentally, I don't know if I can do eight months," he explained. "February, March, I would have been dead."

Tubby Smith, who spent two seasons as Memphis basketball coach, was announced as a member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame's 2026 induction class on July 13.
Rounding out the class are coaches Jay Wright and Ted Owens, as well as former BYU superstar Danny Ainge, former Michigan Wolverine standout Glen Rice, and late UCLA legend Walt Hazzard. The induction ceremony is set for Oct. 22 at the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, Missouri.
"The Class of 2026 represents the very best of college basketball – individuals whose performance, leadership, and impact helped shape the game at the highest level," said Kevin Henderson, CEO of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. "Their legacies will forever be preserved as part of the sport's rich history."
In addition to Smith's time at Memphis — where he was fired in 2018, before the school hired current coach Penny Hardaway — he also served as head coach at Tulsa (1992-95), Georgia (1996-97), Kentucky (1998-2007), Minnesota (2008-13), Texas Tech (2014-16), and High Point (2019-22). He has a career record of 642-370, and he won the 1998 national championship in his first season at Kentucky.
Smith, 75, is one of four coaches in college basketball history to lead as many as five programs to the NCAA tournament. Memphis and High Point are the only programs that did not reach March Madness with him as coach. During the most successful stretch of his coaching career, Smith guided his teams to the Big Dance 16 out of 17 seasons. But his last season at Texas Tech (2015-16) is the only time he reached the NCAA tournament over his final nine seasons as a Division I coach.

Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens shockingly traded All-NBA guard Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday for Paul George and draft picks.
In exchange for the 29-year-old Brown, Boston received an oft-injured veteran who’s seven years older, two first-round picks (2028 and 2031), and two second-round picks (2028 and 2030).
Stevens shipped Brown to a team that beat the Celtics 4-3 in the first round of the 2026 playoffs after holding a 3-1 series lead. The decision sparked strong reactions from rival GMs.
Stevens quickly became one of the best executives in the NBA after taking over from Danny Ainge in 2021. In his first year as the team’s top executive, the Celtics reached the 2022 NBA Finals, losing in six games to the Golden State Warriors. Two years later, Boston won the ******* le after beating the Dallas Mavericks 4-1.
The former Celtics coach is the 2025-26 Executive of the Year, making him a two-time winner of the award. He traded some members of the 2024 championship team to get below the luxury tax. Despite the major moves, he still kept the team in championship contention.

Loved and trusted: All of Jaylen Brown's historic NBA records with the Celtics originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Good things often come to an end, even when they don't have to. The longest-tenured Boston Celtics member is now set to depart the team. Jaylen Brown has been traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, along with two first-round picks and two second-round picks. It's a move that still leaves fans scratching their heads, especially after Brad Stevens saw how much Brown grew with Jayson Tatum as a running mate. So just how high has he climbed in the all-time rankings? Let's take a stroll down memory lane in Beantown.
Jaylen Brown was a clear target that Brad Stevens and Danny Ainge had in the 2016 NBA Draft. They picked him third overall, and the rest has been history. That same night, he made huge promises that eventually were fulfilled.
The most resounding proclamation has to be, "I'm going to war for this city. Brown did exactly that for a decade. He did exactly that every night while wearing the jersey that Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Paul Pierce, and Bill Auerbach established.
Currently, Brown sits 10th all-time in the Celtics scoring list with his 13,474 career points. The people above him in the top three are scoring legends like John Havlicek (26,395 points), Paul Pierce (24,021 points), and Larry Bird (21,791 points). Getting the ball through the basket was clearly Brown's specialty, too. The Celtics have seen him average 20 points per game, which ranks eighth all-time on the franchise scoring list. His 7.5 field goals per game also sit ninth among all Celtics legends, per Basketball Reference..

Hailing from Brockton, AJ Dybantsa was selected number one overall by the Washington Wizards in Tuesday's NBA Draft. He's the first athlete born and raised in Massachusetts to be selected number one overall in any of the four major U.S. sports drafts (NBA, NHL, NFL, and MLB).
Dybantsa, 6'9, 217 pounds, averaged 25.5 points per game this past season with the BYU Cougars. In January, Dybantsa passed Celtics legend Danny Ainge for the most points posted by a BYU freshman in a game, recording 43 points in a 91–78 victory over Utah.
Dybantsa played high school basketball at St. Sebastian's School in Needham. He was offered scholarships from all the top universities, including Boston College, but Dybantsa said he chose BYU to play ball and keep a low profile off the court.
The son of a Jamaican immigrant mother and a father from the Republic of Congo, Dybantsa is the latest athlete produced by the "City of Champions." 80 years ago, heavyweight champion Rocky "the Brockton Blockbuster" Marciano trained at the old fire station on Pleasant Street - a building that had its electrical wiring installed by Thomas Edison. Fellow champion "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler also sculpted his legendary boxing career in Brockton. Both have statutes in the city.
Brockton also produced Ken MacAfee, a 3x All-American tight end who caught passes from Joe Montana at Notre Dame. He was third in voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1977 and won the National ****** le that same year. He played two seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers.

Wales will have to beat Albania and then either Romania or Norway in successive two-legged play-off ties if they are to reach the 2027 Women's World Cup.
Rhian Wilkinson's side were in the same group as Albania in their qualifying campaign - winning 4-0 in Wrexham and 1-0 away from home.
Wales, who topped League B Group 1 ahead of the Czech Republic, will be away in the first leg of round one before hosting the Albanians - who finished third in the group - in the second leg.
Should they win that tie on aggregate, Wales will then play the winners of the match between Romania and Norway, who are managed by former Wales boss Gemma Grainger.
Wilkinson's side will be away from home in the second leg should they make it through to round two.

We just covered Forget AI: Legendary Value Investor Seth Klarman Is Buying These 10 Value Stocks in 2026. WESCO International (NYSE:WCC) ranks #2 (see Seth Klarman Is Buying These 5 Value Stocks in 2026).
Baupost's Stake $393,159,000
WESCO International (NYSE:WCC) is an industrial distributor serving customers in construction, data centers, utilities, and industrial facilities. Unlike pure manufacturers, it provides electrical, communications, and security products and services all under one roof — making it a one-stop shop for large, complex projects.
Data centers are now the company's most powerful growth engine. WESCO International's (NYSE:WCC) data center sales hit $4.3 billion in 2025, up 50% year-over-year, fueled by hyperscale and AI-driven infrastructure demand. The company is embedded across the entire data center lifecycle — from initial power and electrical buildout all the way through connectivity, IT infrastructure, and AI compute environments. This means recurring, sticky revenue rather than one-off contracts.
Scale is WESCO International's (NYSE:WCC) biggest competitive edge. It operates across more than 50 countries with a distribution network that is extremely difficult to replicate. Its closest rival, W.W. Grainger, focuses more narrowly on industrial MRO, while manufacturers like Hubbell and nVent have deeper supply chain control but lack WESCO's breadth and reach. No single competitor matches WESCO's end-to-end capability.

Doc Rivers may have some grudges to settle. The longtime NBA coach appeared on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” following the Knicks’ Game 1 NBA Finals win over the Spurs. And as he praised the Knicks’ team-building, he took the opportunity to criticize some front office executives around the league. “I don’t wanna take shots at anybody, but I will say this. There are a lot of front office guys who can go out and get the stars,” he began. “There’s very few of them that can then build a team into a championship team. That’s what you have to do.” He continued: “You can go out and get these names. But can you make the other moves? You look at Danny Ainge, he’s done it a ton. Brad Stevens has done it, Sam Presti, it took him a while… and he finally kind of figured it out.”
