COLUMBUS — Pleasant continues to make it look easy.
Yet to drop a set this season, the top-seeded Spartans continued that streak with a 3-0 victory over No. 4 seed Utica to win the Division V volleyball district championship Oct. 29 at Ohio Dominican University's Alumni Hall.
It is Pleasant's fourth straight district ***** le, and the victory puts them in the regional semifinals in the familiar O-rena at Ontario High School with a 6 p.m. start Wednesday, Nov. 4. The Spartans (25-0) will face Centerburg (23-2) after the third-seeded Trojans got by No. 7 North Union 3-1 in the first match at ODU Oct. 29.
"We're leaving everything out on the court. We know this is our last chance to do it. We haven't done it the past two years (which is win a state championship)," Pleasant senior libero Kam Roberts said. "I think we're hungry for it this year. We're working hard for it in practice, and it's really showing on the court."
Pleasant jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first set, ***** ping it to 13-2 and 19-5 before finishing it with a 25-10 victory. It set the tone for the night.

If there is a reason for USC football fans to be very optimistic about the upcoming game against Oregon, it's more than just the Ducks' substandard performance. Oregon's coaching staff, with new offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer aboard, might be out of its depth.
Mike Ostrom of Duck Sports Central has more on this:
"Oregon Tipping a Run or Pass - This isn't sign stealing; this is good old fashioned film study and insight. Oklahoma State saw something on film and the result was Cowboy players knowing whether a run or pass was coming.
"'We were noticing earlier in the week that their (Oregon's) offensive line had tendencies that helped us key into run (or) pass and a couple areas we could take advantage of,' said senior linebacker Tate Romney, 'and obviously our defensive line was keyed into that. That was one big thing that gave us a big advantage.' What were those tendencies? 'Just their offensive line had a few stance indicators for most of the time run/pass,' said Romney."
Oregon and Dan Lanning did not have these problems under previous offensive coordinator Will Stein. Lanning had highly professional offensive coordinators the past few years with Stein and predecessor Kenny Dillingham calling plays. The drop-off from them to Drew Mehringer seems steep, and it's a big reason not only for Oregon's decline, but for USC's increased chances of being able to beat the Ducks later this September.

Hello everyone, and welcome back for another week of rankings in the UFC. This weekend was another great card for the UFC, in which we saw Salahdine Parnasse knock out Dan Hooker in under three minutes in the first round.
The next event for the UFC is UFC Fight Night 288 in Glendale, AZ, which features Jean Silva versus Jose Delgado as the main event for NOCHE. This match shouldn't last long, and that sucks for anyone who loves watching both of these fighters.
That being said, let's get to this week's rankings and see who made it. Have a great day, everyone, and may the fights be with you.

Michigan football suffered a shocking upset at Michigan Stadium, as Kyle Whittingham and the No. 16 Wolverines lost to Western Michigan, 12-7, in his first game as U-M coach on Saturday, Sept. 5.
The loss is just Michigan's second loss ever to a Mid-American Conference program, and the first since Toledo beat Rich Rodriguez's Wolverines, 13-10, at Michigan Stadium on Oct. 11, 2008.
After scoring on its first drive, Michigan was plagued by mistakes, misplays and penalties throughout the rest of the night, as an offense that had promised to allow sophomore QB Bryce Underwood to shine instead found itself bogged down by a determined WMU defense Saturday.
Still, U-M's defense seemed mostly up to the task for most of the first half.
But the Broncos grinded out a 9-7 lead – on field goals of 52, 45 and 39 yards by Dieter Kelly, a junior college transfer – with 10:25 remaining on Saturday. WMU's go-ahead score came on a 20-play drive that consumed 71 yards over 13 minutes and 40 seconds in the third and fourth quarters.

England have named the uncapped Aneurin Donald and Henry Crocombe in their squads for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka.
Opener Donald has been included in the 16-player squad for the T20 series, while seamer Crocombe makes the 16-man line-up for the one-day internationals.
England men's national selector Marcus North said the pair are "two promising players who have earned their places on the back of impressive performances in domestic cricket".
He added: "Aneurin has had an exceptional season for Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast and also with Trent Rockets in The Hundred while Henry is a player we have had an eye on all summer."
England all-rounder Jacob Bethell "underwent successful surgery on his injured knee earlier this week" and is targeting the white-ball series against Australia in November for his comeback.

3 reasons why Mariners are likely to fire Dan Wilson after 2026 season originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There are plenty of teams that have been major disappointments during the 2026 MLB season. The New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, and Cincinnati Reds are just a few. The Seattle Mariners might be the biggest disappointment.
While the Mets and Blue Jays stand out as huge disappointments, the Mariners have a real case as the biggest disappointment this year. In a wide-open American League and a weak AL West, the Mariners have failed to capitalize on a great opportunity.
With the 2026 season almost over, and the Mariners looking likely to miss the postseason, Dan Wilson's job is very much on the line. Andy McCullough of The Athletic revealed three reasons why Wilson will be fired by the end of the year.
"The Mariners do not play a particularly crisp brand of baseball," McCullough writes. "Nearly a quarter of their at-bats end in strikeouts. They rank 27th in FanGraphs' metric measuring base-running value and 30th in defensive value."

The Minnesota Timberwolves do not need to beat every top team in the Western Conference to finish first. They need to handle the long stretch of ordinary games better than their closest rivals, and the changes made this offseason give them a better chance to do that.
After going 49-33 last season, Minnesota enters 2026-27 with more ways to keep winning when they are not at their best.
A top seed is built across 82 games. Stars decide plenty of those games, but the standings can also turn on the nights when a starter misses time, the shots stop falling, or a team does not have its best stuff.
That is where Minnesota can make up ground. Anthony Edwards remains the team's main scorer, yet the Wolves have added enough help that they should not need him to rescue every difficult night.
The biggest change is LaMelo Ball, who averaged 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.1 ****** ists in 72 games for Charlotte last season.

The Colorado Buffaloes' linebacker core was completely revamped this offseason with Deion Sanders' staff adding three starting-caliber linebackers from the transfer portal. All three have had impressive fall camps, with two making the Butkus Award watch list and the other, Tyler Martinez, recently named to the Hispanic College Football Player of the Year watch list.
Martinez, a New Mexico State transfer, missed most of the 2025 season with an injury, but in the four games he played, he totaled 27 total tackles, four pass breakups, one tackle for loss, one interception and a forced fumble. He showed impressive playmaking ability in limited action, and Colorado hopes he can find that form in 2026.
The award was established only in 2025, with the founding of the Hispanic Football Hall of Fame. The inaugural recipient was Indiana's Fernando Mendoza.
Other players to make the preseason watch list include Mendoza's brother Alberto, who the Buffaloes are likely to face as Georgia Tech's presumptive starting quarterback. Penn State linebacker Tony Rojas and Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. are other stars on the list.
"Hispanic athletes are driving the future of college football, and this watchlist ensures their extraordinary achievements get the national spotlight they've earned," said Ron Rivera, HFHOF founding member and former NFL coach, via a press release. "Their stories bring great pride to our community."

Tom O'Brien was a college basketball ****** istant at Bradley in 1967 when the opportunity arose to come back to coach at Cathedral, his alma mater.
O'Brien would leave a couple different times as coach, but never really did give up his connection to the school where he graduated from in 1949. O'Brien died on Aug. 17 at age 95.
"Tom had such a history with Cathedral, graduating from there and all the changes the school went through in good times and bad times, Tom was always part of it," said Steve Hodgson, who coached with O'Brien and then later succeeded him. "It goes even beyond that. There are so many families in the Catholic and Eastside community and people that I've heard from in the last week through Tom's passing that he touched."
O'Brien not only coached football, basketball and baseball at Cathedral, he later returned as a substitute and earned the nickname "Super Sub."
"Tom left a profound impact on Cathedral, both as a student and when he returned as an educator and coach," Cathedral shared on its social media accounts. "'Coach OB' coached football, basketball and baseball at Cathedral, leaving a lasting legacy on thousands of Cathedral students. ESPN Sounds Alarm On Patriots After Historic 2025 Turnaround originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots authored one of the NFL's most remarkable transformations last season. Mike Vrabel took over a team that had finished 4-13 in consecutive years and immediately guided it to a 14-3 record, an AFC East championship and an appearance in Super Bowl LX. New England's 10-win improvement tied the largest single-season jump in NFL history.
Repeating that success could prove even more difficult than achieving it the first time.
ESPN's Bill Barnwell included the Patriots in his annual breakdown of the NFL teams most likely to decline during the 2026 season. That prediction might sound harsh after New England strengthened its roster over the offseason. In reality, it says as much about the extraordinary height of last season's success as it does about any concern surrounding the current Patriots.
New England did not simply sneak into the playoffs during Vrabel's first season. The Patriots won 14 games, captured their first AFC East **** le since 2019 and advanced through three postseason rounds. They defeated the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium before earning a 10-7 road victory over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

What happened to Julian Alvarez? Barcelona transfer speculation grows as Atletico Madrid star booed at home originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
One of the best forwards in Spain, Julian Alvarez is a wanted man, but instead of securing the move he desires, it has only created strife at his current club.
Having spent the last two seasons with La Liga side Atletico Madrid, Alvarez has pushed heavily to join Barcelona this summer, but his desired transfer has not materialized the way he likely had hoped. Instead, it has left him an isolated and disgruntled figure at Atleti, who refuse to cooperate with his intentions.
Thus, when Atletico Madrid opened their 2026-27 season at home against Villarreal on August 23, Alvarez was verbally ***** aulted by the Atleti supporters, creating a tense and hostile situation that must be resolved before the transfer window closes in a week.
The Sporting News explains what happened at the match, where negotiations for a transfer sit, and why Alvarez has pushed so heavily for a move away from the Metropolitano.

Arike Ogunbowale's reaction to Kelsey Mitchell foul could come with added cost originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Wings' matchup with the Indiana Fever produced frustration early Thursday night, and Arike Ogunbowale could end up paying for it in more ways than one. Ogunbowale received a technical foul with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter after she was whistled for a personal foul against Kelsey Mitchell. The Dallas guard disputed the decision and continued making her case to an official, who quickly ***** sed the technical.
Caitlin Clark missed the ensuing technical free throw, but Mitchell converted both attempts awarded for the original foul. The sequence did not create a major swing on the scoreboard. It could, however, create an unwanted charge for Ogunbowale.
The technical was Ogunbowale's second of the season. Under the WNBA's technical-foul structure, each of a player's first three technicals carries a $500 fine. Technicals four through seven result in $1,000 fines, while an eighth triggers a $1,500 fine and an automatic one-game suspension.
Ogunbowale therefore could be fined $500 if the call is upheld. There is at least some possibility the technical will not remain on her record. Ogunbowale previously had a technical rescinded this season, and the WNBA reviews such calls after games. Dallas also could appeal the decision.

BOSTON — Maybe it was just his own natural enthusiasm speaking, but shortstop Trevor Story, when asked about a timetable to return from a rehab stint that was exactly one game old, said returning for the start of the team's weekend series Friday was a "possibility.'
For the sake of everyone involved, let's hope not.
That's no slight at Story, among the most accountable and conscientious players the Red Sox have had in years.
But after being out since mid-May, it's frankly ludicrous that Story would be ready to hit big league pitching after a rehab **** ignment that lasted, at most, four games in the minors.
Players are naturally eager to return to play as soon as possible. That goes double for Story, who, through no fault of his own, has had lengthy stays on the Injured List in four of his first five seasons with the Red Sox.

Riders are risking their lives in races where organisers battle huge costs, and cycling's world governing body the UCI "cannot keep traffic off the roads", according to former rider and team boss Jonathan Vaughters.
Britain's Fin Tarling, 19, died during the Volta a Portugal on Friday following a high-speed collision with a van which had strayed on to the closed road.
A Go Fund Me page to promote young cycling talent has been set up in memory of Tarling, who rode for the NSN Cycling Development Team and was brother to Netcompany-Ineos' Josh Tarling.
Vaughters, who is co-founder and boss of the EF Education-Easypost World Tour team told BBC Sport: "What I'm really not enjoying is this sentiment that's coming from very powerful people in cycling, that says: 'What can you do? Sometimes cars just end up on the road - this is just part of doing competitive sport on the open road.' That is not true. This is preventable."
He added: "People look at the Tour de France and see a bunch of riders going through the beautiful French countryside, but fundamentally it's a very dangerous sport. From the start of my career I can't tell you how many people we've lost."

DENVER -- After a series loss against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Los Angeles Dodgers were hoping for a change of luck after struggling in recent weeks. They would have that opportunity against the worst team in the National League.
Blake Snell would take the mound for the Dodgers in his second start since coming off the injured list. He was coming off a very positive first start on Aug. 11 against the Kansas City Royals, when he pitched 6.0 innings and allowed one earned run while striking out 10.
Snell would continue that same trend, helping lead the Dodgers to an 11-5 victory. The left-hander would throw 6.0 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while walking three and striking out five. Walks would become an issue in the third inning, but Snell escaped with minimal damage to his stat line in another strong performance. This would also be the first time the Dodgers scored 10 or more runs since July 2, when they beat the San Diego Padres 12-7.
The Dodgers offense would get going early, scoring five runs through the early portions of the game. Mookie Betts would get things started with an RBI double in the top of the second inning, followed by a four-run fourth inning.
After the Dodgers applied pressure on Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano, Andy Pages would come through in a big spot to start the offensive outburst. An RBI single from the Dodgers center fielder would bring in the first run of the inning, while Max Muncy would follow in the next at-bat with a three-run homer to extend the Dodgers' advantage over the Rockies.

The NTT IndyCar Series competed in the Streets of Markham, and it was a chaotic event.
