The Federal Reserve voted to raise interest rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday to a range of 3.75%-4% amid persistently high inflation. The decision was unanimous.
The median Fed official expects one more rate hike this year, according to the central bank's Summary of Economic Projections, also known as the dot plot.
The move was the Fed's first increase in the fed funds rate since 2023, when the Jerome Powell-led central bank concluded its post-pandemic hiking campaign. It was also largely priced in by the market, even as Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has been adamant about not providing markets with forward guidance.

Stocks were little changed when the decision was first announced but turned lower during Warsh's brief press conference.

HIVE Digital Technologies (Nasdaq: HIVE), a Canada-based Bitcoin miner and data center operator that trades on the Nasdaq and Toronto Stock Exchange, said it has exceeded $1 million in daily revenue on Aug. 21.
The milestone combined income from Bitcoin mining and GPU cloud services for the first time at that level, according to preliminary, unaudited management estimates.
Since that date, the company has produced an average of approximately 12 Bitcoin per day, representing roughly 2% of global Bitcoin network production.
Its GPU cloud operations, run through wholly owned subsidiary BUZZ HPC, a sovereign AI cloud and high-performance computing provider, have generated approximately $100,000 in average daily revenue over the same period.

Shares of Chime Financial (NASDAQ: CHYM) rallied 44% in August, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Chime delivered an excellent second-quarter earnings report, showing stronger-than-expected growth and a significant inflection in profitability. With the stock having sold off since going public a little over a year ago, it's no surprise to see a rally in response to the strong numbers one year later.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
In the second quarter, Chime's revenue grew 27% to $670 million, with earnings per share swinging from a loss in the prior-year quarter to a positive $0.07. Both figures handily beat **** yst expectations. Chime also raised its full-year revenue guidance to between $2.725 and $2.745 billion, up from the prior quarter's range of $2.66 billion to $2.69 billion, and adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, and depreciation, and amortization) between $465 and $475 million, up from the prior quarter's guidance between $416 million and $431 million.
While revenue growth came in ahead of expectations, the real story appeared to be the company's skyrocketing profit margins. Second quarter adjusted EBITDA margins of 15% marked a more than 12 percentage point improvement relative to the year-ago quarter.

European PE add-ons are stuck at decade highs for the obvious reason—sponsors playing it safe—but increasingly also because a consolidated platform is what enhances the chance to exit.
According to PitchBook's Q2 2026 European PE Breakdown, there were 2,121 add-on deals in H1 2026, reaching a decade high of 57.7% of the total European PE deal count. It's the third straight quarter the strategy has held near record levels.
Richard Damming, head of PE investments Europe at Schroders Capital, spoke with PitchBook News about why a consolidated platform may help secure an exit in the subdued market and how to create value in times of low financial leverage.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Stocks settled sharply higher on Thursday as dovish comments from Fed Governor Waller knocked bond yields lower and reduced the chance of a Fed rate hike later this month. The 10-year T-note yield fell -2 bp to 4.76% after Mr. Waller said underlying inflation is better than core numbers suggest and he will support keeping interest rates steady if next week's inflation news shows "continued progress toward our 2% goal." Mr. Waller's comments reduced the chance of a Fed rate hike at the Sep 15-16 FOMC meeting to 52% from 65% before he spoke.

Grief isn't the only thing losing a spouse triggers. You also have to make some big financial decisions, including whether to keep on with your Social Security retirement benefit or switch to a spousal benefit. You probably want to maximize your income, but there's no single strategy that works best for everyone.
Making the correct call between a retirement and a survivor benefit depends on understanding exactly how each benefit works. Here's what you need to know.
Continue »
A Social Security retirement benefit is the benefit you qualify for based on your own work history. The more money you've paid Social Security payroll taxes on throughout your career, the larger your retirement benefit will be.
Married people might get a spousal benefit if they didn't work long enough to qualify for a retirement benefit on their own, or if the spousal benefit, worth up to one-half of the benefit their partner qualified for at their full retirement age (FRA), is larger than their own retirement benefit. But you cannot claim a spousal benefit once your partner has died.

Hit the events and shows of Monterey Car Week, and what's apparent is that money is no object: seven-figure hypercars changing hands, classic car auctions leaping to new records, and waiting lists stretching years.
But talk to the executives who actually sell these cars, and a more nuanced picture emerges. Higher-end buyers are supporting the market, but there is also a split. They say there is a K-shaped economy even at the very top of the market, and only one arm of the K is going up.
McKeel Hagerty, CEO of the collector-car insurer Hagerty (HGTY), sees it now. When asked whether a K-shaped economy exists in the collector-car world, he didn't hesitate.
"Like the two upper levels of a K," he said. "When people are paying a lot of money for cars, it's because there was a big liquidity event."
Company sales, IPOs, and an overheated stock market add to liquidity at the highest end, but set against a backdrop of tariffs, high rates, and global conflict that "freaks people out."

Shares of H World Group Limited (NASDAQ:HTHT) jumped 11.3% to $46.61 on August 17 after second-quarter results combined continued growth, a higher outlook, and an aggressive capital-return program. Hotel turnover, which measures room and non-room transaction value across the network, increased 13.2% to RMB30.5 billion, while revenue rose 10.8% to RMB7.1 billion. The company raised its 2026 revenue-growth forecast to 4%-8% from 2%-6% and authorized up to $2.5 billion of dividends and repurchases over three years. For H World Group Limited (NASDAQ:HTHT), the question is whether those returns will come from stronger cash generation or eventually compete with hotel openings and upgrades.
As of June 30, H World Group Limited (NASDAQ:HTHT) operated 13,539 hotels with 1.34 million rooms and had 3,089 unopened hotels in its pipeline. Its China business opened 498 hotels and closed 176 during the quarter. Only one opening was leased and owned, underscoring how expansion is shifting toward managed and franchised properties. Across the group, 93% of rooms operated under those ****** et-light models.
H World Group Limited (NASDAQ:HTHT) ended June with RMB14.2 billion, or $2.1 billion, of cash and equivalents against RMB4.2 billion of debt. Including RMB142 million of restricted cash, net cash totaled RMB10.2 billion. Second-quarter operating cash inflow was RMB3.4 billion. The board also declared an approximately $275 million ordinary dividend, equal to $0.87 per American Depositary Share. The larger plan sets an aggregate three-year ceiling, while leaving the timing and mix of dividends and repurchases to the board.
H World Group Limited (NASDAQ:HTHT) is still expanding, not retreating. Management maintained its 2026 target of 2,200-2,300 gross hotel openings, and nearly every China opening during the quarter used a manachised or franchised structure. Franchisees supply much of the property capital, while H World supplies brands, technology, reservations and operating support.
That structure is already improving the earnings mix. Franchised revenue increased 25.2% to RMB3.6 billion, while H World Group Limited (NASDAQ:HTHT) lifted non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA 20.0% to RMB2.7 billion. Operating margin widened to 31.1% from 27.8%. If that momentum continues, shareholder returns can be funded without sacrificing network growth.

NEW YORK, Aug 19 (Reuters) - The dollar weakened against major currencies on Wednesday after the U.S. Treasury Department announced it plans to double liquidity support buyback operations for longer-dated bonds.
The ‌euro rose 0.78% against the dollar to $1.16640, hitting its highest level in more than 2-1/2 months.
Sterling was ‌0.48% higher against the dollar at $1.3597, rising to its highest since May 11.
The announcement suggests an expansionary monetary policy and the availability of more dollars in the market, which is causing the U.S. currency to depreciate, said Juan Perez, director of trading at Monex USA.

Few large-cap tech stocks have moved like Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX) over the past five years. The hard drive maker was left for dead in 2021 as investors braced for NAND to eat HDD, yet the AI data explosion flipped the narrative.
Cloud giants now depend on Seagate's Mozaic HAMR platform to store the exabytes their AI models generate, and the stock has responded in kind. The question is whether the run has legs into 2027, or whether the easy money has already been made.

Micron (MU) and SanDisk (SNDK) have delivered the sort of gains investors typically wait years for.
Micron traded around $1,012 on August 18, while SanDisk changed hands near $1,787. Seeking Alpha data show both stocks up 254% and 653%, respectively, in 2026.
Interestingly, that rally has been so intense that even after hedge fund billionaire David Tepper slashed his position by 41%, the value of Appaloosa's remaining stake doubled from $562.5 million to $1.125 billion between March 31 and June 30.
The tremendous rise is becoming tougher to dismiss as just another temporary memory boom.
For perspective, TrendForce expects the DRAM market to surge to $618.7 billion this year, up 303%, as AI continues to absorb capacity.

Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) shares made headlines recently after the company's AI division saw a series of high-profile departures.
Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater ****** et Management, recently said on CNBC that the brain drain at Google should not be ignored, arguing that the departures of key AI researchers could have implications beyond the headlines. Munster said Google has seen about six major departures over the past three months and that the loss of talent could affect the company's culture of innovation and its ability to develop future AI models. He also pointed to signs that Gemini has started to slip in AI model rankings relative to competitors. He thinks these developments are not a positive trend.
At the same time, Munster highlighted significant improvements from Grok, saying he expects the AI model to potentially break into the top three models as new versions are released. Grok was developed by xAI and is integrated into X, while xAI is now part of ****** eX following ****** eX's acquisition of the AI company.
The market is figuring out ****** eX isn't just a ****** e company. The ****** e business contributed just 12% of Q2 revenue and ****** ysts think the contribution of ****** e may keep shrinking as other streams kick in. Connectivity (Starlink) brought in $4.29 billion, up 66% year over year, with 12 million subscribers, double last year's count. AI brought in $2.56 billion, up 247% year over year, boosted by a big Anthropic deal.
Musk guided to a $100 billion annualized revenue run rate by December, up from a Q2 run rate near $31 billion. If ****** eX hits it, the stock trades at 14x that figure and looks reasonable. Bulls also point to Musk's math on AI: if ****** eX can push AI compute capacity from 1.4 GW today to 15 GW by end of 2027 at $50 million per megawatt, that's $750 billion in annual AI revenue potential.

AXT has surged 351% YTD but is pausing as traders de-risk ahead of Lumentum's closely watched earnings after tonight's close.
Coherent, up 76% YTD, plans to double internal InP wafer output by year-end 2026, a direct demand signal for AXT substrates.
Lumentum has beaten EPS four straight quarters, with past beats averaging a 7% day-of gain and 15% one-week gain.

Soccer purists spent June and July complaining that World Cup hydration breaks turned fast-moving matches into stop-start slogs padded with extra commercial time.
Broadcasters cashed in on those minutes. So did Coca-Cola, the tournament's longtime beverage sponsor, whose in-stadium marketing during those very breaks helped power one of the more unusual quarters in the company's recent history.
Coca-Cola is a 64-year Dividend King, the kind of stock retirees hold for consistency rather than surprises. Its latest numbers were not consistent in the usual sense.
Volume, revenue and profit accelerated together, and management raised its full-year outlook for the second time this year.
Second-quarter net revenue climbed 7% to $13.4 billion, according to Coca-Cola's earnings release. Comparable earnings per share rose 11% to 97 cents, beating Wall Street estimates by five cents, Reuters reported.

Two of the biggest listings in market history are queued up for the back end of this year, and punters are already pricing the run-in.
Polymarket has opened books on where OpenAI (Unlisted:OPAI) and Anthropic (Unlisted (US):ANTHRO) private valuations land at the end of August, settled on the price reported by Nasdaq Private Market.
The contrast between the two is the interesting bit. OpenAI's market is tightly clustered and reasonably well traded, with 54% on a valuation of $800 billion to $900 billion, and a further 23% on $900 billion to $1 trillion.
That is basically a bet on nothing happening, since OpenAI was last marked at $852 billion in March and has sat there ever since. A related market gives it a 57% chance of touching $900 billion by 31 August.
Anthropic's book, by comparison, is barely trading, with most brackets showing no volume at all and prices that do not add up to a coherent picture.

The NEOS Nasdaq-100 High Income ETF (NASDAQ:QQQI) sells one story on its factsheet: a monthly check tied to a roughly 14% distribution rate. What the headline yield leaves out is where the cash actually comes from, and how much upside a holder is quietly handing to option buyers every time the Nasdaq rips higher.
QQQI carries a 0.68% gross and net expense ratio, disclosed in the fund's May 2026 prospectus. That is $68 a year for every $10,000 invested, skimmed daily from NAV before a distribution ever lands in your account. Compounded over decades, that drag accumulates against the very NAV that generates the option income.

Middle East turmoil, centered on the U.S. war with Iran, is playing havoc with world energy markets. An ongoing dispute over access to the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of world oil and natural gas supply is shipped, is causing prices to surge. This is a boon for South America's oil industry, particularly Suriname's emerging petroleum boom, which was delayed by conflicting drilling results and seismic data. The former Dutch colony is on the cusp of becoming South America's next major oil-producing nation.
Since 2019, Suriname's government in the capital Paramaribo has hungrily eyed Guyana's booming petroleum sector, which delivered a massive economic windfall for the former British colony. Five major oil discoveries in offshore Block 58, which started in 2020 with the Maka Central-1 exploration well, confirmed the presence of commercially exploitable hydrocarbons in Suriname's portion of the offshore Guyana-Suriname Basin.
After a series of delays, beginning in 2022, due to mismatched drilling results and seismic data along with a high gas-to-oil ratio, TotalEnergies, the operator of Block 58, approved a final investment decision (FID). TotalEnergies, which holds a 50% working interest in offshore Block 58, and 50% partner APA Corporation approved the development of the deepwater GranMorgu project. This changed the project's ownership structure. Forty percent was retained by the operator TotalEnergies with another 40% retained by APA, and the remainder granted to Staatsolie.
The state-controlled energy company's acquisition was in accordance with Staatsolie's rights set out in the production-sharing contract (PSC) for Block 52. The company used a $1.6 billion loan from a banking consortium and a March 2025 bond issue to finance the acquisition. Staatsolie's share of GranMorgu will multiply the earnings delivered to Paramaribo, which has been battling an economic crisis since 2021. Indeed, the situation was so severe that rioting engulfed parts of the capital and parliament was stormed by protestors in 2023.
GranMorgu, which will come online in 2028, is a game changer for an economically challenged Suriname. The project's floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO) vessel, on completion, will have capacity of 220,000 barrels per day.
