The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) closed up by +1.06% on Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up by +1.18%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up by +1.16%. E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +1.00%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) rose +1.15%.
Stocks settled sharply higher on Thursday as dovish comments from Fed Governor Waller knocked bond yields lower and reduced the chance of a Fed rate hike later this month. The 10-year T-note yield fell -2 bp to 4.76% after Mr. Waller said underlying inflation is better than core numbers suggest and he will support keeping interest rates steady if next week's inflation news shows "continued progress toward our 2% goal." Mr. Waller's comments reduced the chance of a Fed rate hike at the Sep 15-16 FOMC meeting to 52% from 65% before he spoke.
