On one hand, UPS beat on everything that mattered this quarter. EPS of $1.76 against $1.66 expected, revenue of $22.8 billion against $21.81 billion expected, and raised full-year guidance on top of it. On the other hand, the stock fell 8% anyway, because Wall Street also got to see UPS' third-quarter outlook.
The best line of the whole call, though, came from CEO Carol Tomé, who said, "if you ignore Amazon and the volume that we intentionally made available to the market, we actually grew our volume in the second quarter." Which, sure, if you ignore the baseball playing, the Mets look great this year. Half the companies in America would probably love the chance to report earnings with an asterisk that says "excluding our biggest, most demanding customer, everything here looks fantastic." Tomé is just the one honest enough to say it out loud on a recorded call.
The Amazon divorce is real, though, and mostly finished. UPS has cut roughly 2 million pieces a day of what it calls "lower quality Amazon volume," stripping out about $4.5 billion in related costs so far, on purpose, in exchange for a leaner network it insists will pay off as volume grows elsewhere. Domestic revenue rose 6% on higher revenue per piece, international jumped 12.5%, and healthcare logistics cleared $3 billion for a second straight quarter, with Tomé bragging UPS is the only carrier offering true end-to-end healthcare delivery on its own ******* ets.

July 21 (Reuters) - Tesla is expected to report its first quarterly cash burn in over two years on Wednesday, as its spending on AI and robotics soars, intensifying investor scrutiny over when those bets ‌will pay off.
CEO Elon Musk has pivoted the electric-vehicle maker's focus from manufacturing cars to building so-called physical AI businesses ‌such as self-driving taxis and humanoid robots. Much of Tesla's valuation hangs on that promise.
However, investors are growing increasingly uneasy as spending on AI infrastructure, including data centers, and manufacturing capacity is projected to climb to $25 billion this year, outstripping quarterly cash generated by Tesla's core automotive and energy operations.
"As capex more than doubles and free cash flow turns negative, investors are increasingly focused on evidence that Tesla's spending is strengthening its physical AI moat," Morgan Stanley ****** ysts wrote in a note.

BOSTON, July 21 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Tuesday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's administration from stripping tens of thousands of asylum seekers and immigrants who have ‌Temporary Protected Status of their ability to work in the United States.
U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton in Boston sided with ‌a coalition of immigrant rights groups and labor unions that sued to block U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services from moving forward with a series of policies designed to implement new immigration-related restrictions enacted by Congress last year.
Gorton's order will be in place until he decides whether to issue a longer-term pause of the Trump administration's policy. The judge said he would rule on that by August 5. USCIS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

July 14 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has installed 59 natural gas turbines for its Colossus 2 data center project in Tennessee without securing federal clean air permits, according to communications between regulators and xAI representatives.
Potential emissions from the turbines are far beyond the threshold that would require a federal permit, and would be released near predominantly Black communities already estimated to be suffering disproportionately high rates of lung disease, according to a Reuters ****** ysis based on government data and information in the correspondence with regulators.
The findings, which have not been previously reported, reflect how exploding electricity demand from AI data centers is ‌driving companies to build off-grid power plants at a pace outstripping environmental oversight, with potentially big risks to public health.
The number of unpermitted turbines identified by Reuters is about double what xAI has publicly acknowledged. The company previously said it was running 27 unpermitted turbines for Colossus 2 as of January and has argued the permits are not required. ‌At least 57 of the 59 turbines are located in Mississippi, just over the state line from Tennessee where the data center is located.

At a recent TMX VettaFi Midyear Market Outlook Symposium, Cinthia Murphy, Director of Research at VettaFi, sat down with Jeremy Schwartz, Global Chief Investment Officer at WisdomTree.

The U.S. inflation gauge most closely watched by the Federal Reserve climbed 4.1% in the 12 months through May, the Bureau of Economic ******* ysis said Thursday — the first reading above 4% in three years and the highest since April 2023.
On a monthly basis, the PCE price index advanced 0.4%, the same pace as April. Stripping out food and energy, the core measure came in at 3.4% above year-ago levels and 0.3% higher than the prior month.
Spending held up despite the inflationary backdrop. The 0.7% monthly jump in personal consumption expenditures outpaced both the forecast and the inflation rate, with services accounting for $94.3 billion of the increase and goods contributing $61.8 billion. Personal income matched that 0.7% gain, and the saving rate stood at 3%.
The May inflation reading was in line with the forecast of economists polled by Reuters. The annual PCE rate had come in at 3.8% in April.
Much of the pickup in inflation traces back to the U.S.-led war against Iran, which sent oil and gasoline prices sharply higher. A fragile ceasefire has since brought fuel prices down from their peaks, but economists do not expect inflation to cool quickly. Adding to the pressure, import tariffs had already been pushing up costs for consumers before hostilities broke out.

Instead of directing financial markets with its policy moves, Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh wants the markets to inform the central bank.
"Financial market prices are probably the most important source of information to guide central bankers," Warsh said during a press conference on Wednesday. "But when all the financial markets are doing is reflecting back what we've said, then we're taking the most important source of information, and we're being blind to it."
Warsh said he wants the Fed to create a system where those blinders come off and the markets follow data they efficiently deem reliable.
"He wants to have financial markets help him see what they're thinking without biasing their opinion," said Wil Stith, senior bond portfolio manager at Wilmington Trust. "He wants markets to give [central bankers] a fresh read on risk, economic weakness potential, and inflation as opposed to all that feedback [being] biased by what the Fed has been telegraphing constantly."
That means stripping so-called forward guidance, a communication tool that signals the central bank's potential next move based on how the economy unfolds.

All of that aside, there are other reasons the ******* ans likely wouldn't put their hat in the ring for a shot at getting Sorsby.

New Mexico's forests are dying faster than at any time on record. In 2025, the state mapped 209,000 acres of trees killed by bark beetles and other insects, which was more than a 200% increase over the year before, according to a newly released report from the New Mexico Forestry Division. And the main impetus for that arboreal death was the state's dwindling water supply.
"At the beginning of January 2025, 35% of the state was in moderate drought and 20% in severe drought," the report read. "By the end of December 2025, 71% of the state was in moderate drought and 52% was in severe drought."
According to the report, New Mexico recorded its second-warmest year on record. The lower Rio Grande, the river that has sustained farming communities in the southern part of the state for centuries, is now a river of sand most of the year, as the aquifer underneath is dropping by more than a foot each year. The issue has to do with the dry conditions creating the perfect environment for bark beetles to kill trees in record numbers.
And 2026 is shaping up to be no different. "We had a bleak winter and little to no snowpack, and there are areas that are currently experiencing bark beetle attack," said Victor Lucero, forest health program manager for the New Mexico Forestry Division. Drought stress, he said, is the primary condition that leaves trees defenseless: stripping them of the sustained sap flow that is their only natural shield against infestation. "Things may change with respect to tree mortality if things remain hot and dry," Lucero said. The one scenario that could turn the tide: "If the summer monsoon rains arrive as predicted, this may improve the resilience of live trees to withstand bark beetle attack."
Now, just two miles of the Mexican border in the Chihuahuan Desert, Oracle and OpenAI are building one of the largest data centers in the country.

A hot inflation reading for May released Wednesday morning reinforces that the Federal Reserve will maintain interest rates next week. Rates will likely remain on hold until there's evidence that inflation is receding.
The Consumer Price Index rose 4.2% in May, in line with expectations, compared with 3.8% in April. The increase was again driven by energy prices due to the conflict in the Middle East, which accounted for 60% of the rise in inflation. Food and shelter prices also pushed up inflation last month.
Stripping out volatile energy and food prices, "core" inflation ticked up to 2.9% from 2.8% in April, also in line with expectations. Month over month, core inflation rose 0.2%, below expectations for a rise of 0.3% and down from 0.4% in April.
Officials are closely watching whether higher energy prices are becoming embedded in core inflation. So far, core prices have not jumped at the same level as energy prices. Still, core inflation ticked up and is roughly a full percentage point above the Fed's 2% inflation goal.

The world’s second-tallest tsunami wave on record tore through the remote Tracy Arm fjord in Alaska last August, leaving immense destruction in its wake.
Luckily, there were no people nearby. But in its aftermath, scientists immediately went to work, piecing together what happens when a mountainside collapse kicks off a mega-tsunami and no one is around to see it.
This is how it happened: On August 10, at 5:30 in the morning, an entire mountainside at the mouth of the receding South Sawyer glacier detached, falling into the ocean and producing a monster wave. At its peak, the wave raced up over 1,500 feet on the opposing wall of the fjord — a height taller than Kuala Lumpur’s twin Petronas towers.
The mega-tsunami wreaked havoc across the landscape, stripping forests down to bare rock, ripping trees out by their roots and hurling boulders.
It also produced a seismic vibration so strong it shook the entire planet for days. Only the second time that an effect like this has been recorded anywhere, it was caused by trapped energy from the wave sloshing around in the fjord for days following the initial event.

It hasn’t been easy to be a renter in the last five years. Rental prices surged in the aftermath of the pandemic, outstripping wage growth. But recently, renters have notched a small win: In much of the country, rents are falling.
