The market's top rental bat is reportedly off the board. Contact wizard Luis Arraez is heading from San Francisco to Philadelphia, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The 29-year-old Venezuelan has been one of the game's most unique position players for a while now. He strikes out and whiffs less often than anyone, but also barrels the ball up less than anyone. Call him a throwback, call him an old soul, call him overrated, but Arraez is a phenomenal change of pace for a Phillies lineup that strikes out far too often.
Since the beginning of time, it seems, the Phillies and their president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski have been searching for a right-handed outfielder come deadline time. Arraez, a lefty infielder, is neither of those things, but he's good enough with the stick that the defensive fit is a secondary concern.
But it's still an area Dombrowski and skipper Don Mattingly need to get sorted. It's been a bit of a janky week for Yankee baseball, with a pair of rain-induced doubleheaders and a scheduled offday in the past six. We return to what is hopefully normal programming today, with the Bombers coming into Philadelphia for a three-game set against the second-place Phillies.
It's Cam ****** p Day, as the ace Cam Schlittler looks to pull himself over the 4.0 fWAR mark if he can really strut on the Phils tonight. I've remarked a number of times this year how Cam will variate between "real good" and "meh" starts this year, with a handful of dominant performances and only one real stinker in the mix. His last outing was certainly in the "meh" column, as the Dodgers were able to chase him before the end of the fifth last Sunday.
I need to do the math on this, but it feels like because Cam throws so many pitches in the zone, he's most vulnerable against teams that make contact and offer at pitches in-zone. The Phillies boast the sixth-highest strikeout rate in baseball and the 10th-highest Z-Swing percentage, along with the 16th-best Z-Contact rate. To me that sounds like this should be a good matchup for Schlittler's game plan, but Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper are still who they are.
Jesús Luzardo, who is still just 28 despite me feeling like I've heard his name for 15 years, goes for Philly. After a five-win season of his own last year, he's returned that pace and then some in 2026, making the All-Star team with a 3.43 ERA and 2.90 FIP, led by a sparkling ability to keep the ball in the park. The Yankees have managed to induce some immediate regression in other homer-suppressing pitchers this year, if they can manage that tonight they'll set themselves up well for a win.

With 58 games remaining in the Houston Astros’ 2026 season and two months left on the schedule, it might be too early to talk about Yordan Alvarez potentially winning a Triple Crown.
Yet after Alvarez hit his 34th home run of the season, it’s not unreasonable to raise the possibility either. The Astros slugger batted 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in Houston’s 5-2 win over the Miami Marlins.
Alvarez now leads MLB in homers, overtaking the Philadelphia Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber. And he has four more than Ben Rice of the New York Yankees for the top spot in the AL.
With 77 RBI, Alvarez is one ahead of the Washington Nationals’ CJ Abrams and Jordan Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals. And though he trails the Marlins’ Otto Lopez (.332) for the MLB lead in batting average, his .328 mark leads the Tampa Bay Rays’ Yandy Diaz (.308) by 20 points.

The Philadelphia Phillies continue to make questionable decisions while running the bases during this week's series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Trea Turner reached first base on a fielder's choice out in the bottom of the fifth ... only because Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy tagged out Bryson Stott, who for some reason decided to run from second to third with one out.
The game had just been tied 3-3 during the inning on a Bryan De La Cruz home run. But Stott's blunder halted the momentum with Kyle Schwarber popping out to end the inning.

The Philadelphia Phillies' beloved designated hitter was caught using profanity on a hot mic during the third inning of the 96th All-Star Game on July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Schwarber was wearing a microphone for FOX during his second at-bat of the game in the third inning, with the National League trailing 3-0.
Schwarber, who was talking with FOX broadcasters Joe Davis and John Smoltz, swung at the first pitch, and the earpiece came out of his ear. Schwarber tried to locate and grab the earpiece and said, "Whatever, f--- it."
Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers then helped with the earpiece while Schwarber smiled.

The All-Star break is officially in full swing, and following an absolutely epic Home Run Derby Monday, fans are primed and ready for the Midsummer Classic this evening. Philadelphia is hosting the festivities for the first time since 1996, bringing the best of the best to the City of Brotherly Love. The American League leads the National League all-time, 48-45, and has dominated the better part of the last three decades, losing just five times since 1997, and winning 10 of the last 12. Though we can’t forget last season, when a tied game after nine led to the first “swing-off” tiebreaker that allowed the NL to take the W as Philly’s own Kyle Schwarber won it in dramatic fashion.
Two star-studded lineups will be managed by a pair of excellent managers. Dave Roberts, the Los Angeles Dodgers skipper, is managing back-to-back years and his fifth All-Star game, and he will have five of his players on the roster. Making his managerial debut in the Midsummer Classic, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider will be at the helm for the American League. The Jays fell to the Dodgers in a thrilling, seven-game World Series in 2025, and though Toronto hasn’t been as dominant this season, Schneider will have four players attending with Cy Young contender — and an old White Sox pal — Dylan Cease getting the start for the AL.
Leading the field with the most elected All Stars are the hometown Philadelphia Phillies, with six players represented this year, including two-time All-Star Cristopher Sánchez, who is starting on the mound for the National League. This week’s All-Star Week festivities got off to a bombastic start on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park, with outstanding performances from established sluggers and burgeoning stars alike in the Home Run Derby. The spectacle of Jordan Walker silencing a partisan Philadelphia crowd with six consecutive bombs to ****** the ****** le from Kyle Schwarber will be hard to top in terms of pure theatre, but let’s see what the Midsummer Classic itself has to offer!
Tonight, the Yankees will have both Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger representing them in the American League’s starting lineup; they’ll take on Philadelphia ace Cristopher Sánchez on his home mound as the Senior Circuit seeks to claim their second straight victory in the main event. The AL had mounted a late-inning comeback to erase a 6-0 lead, but Schwarber ultimately led the NL to victory by winning a Derby-esque swing-off challenge which replaced extra innings.
Of course, two other Yankees were named All-Stars this season: Aaron Judge and Cam Schlittler. Judge is still working his way back from the rib fracture he sustained in the first week of June. Schlittler was about as deserving as any pitcher to get the starting nod for the AL, but owing to his start this past Saturday, opted not to participate. Strangely, Blue Jays manager John Schneider, who will be leading the American League on the field tonight, said he was always planning to tap the Blue Jays’ Dylan Cease as the starter—even if Schlittler was available to pitch. Weird move, but all right.
Bellinger and Rice will hit consecutively in Schneider’s lineup, at the sixth and seventh spot respectively. (Everybody get those jokes out of the way now.) They were not voted into starting spots, but they will each get the nod regardless due to injuries to Judge and Byron Buxton in Bellinger’s case and the combination of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.‘s withdrawal from the event and replacement Nick Kurtz’s recent addition to the IL.
Rice participated in last night’s Home Run Derby, but failed to advance to the next round. He’ll still get a chance to show off the impressive game power which has brought him to the precipice of 30 home runs at the season’s intermission. Bellinger was slumping mightily ahead of the season’s final week, but finished strong with five hits in the last four games ahead of the break. He gets a chance to keep that momentum going against…well, somebody in the NL’s pitching staff. Since it tends to be a new face pitching every inning, and all. Just one big hit from either of them however, and they could join Derek Jeter (2000), Mariano Rivera (2013), and Giancarlo Stanton (2022) as the only All-Star Game MVPs in Yankees history.

Jac Caglianone hit eight home runs at the 2026 Home Run Derby in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Monday night.
In the new format, Caglianone was not among the top four who advanced to the second round. Eight homers may sound like a small number for a Home Run Derby, but it's as many as hometown favorite Bryce Harper hit and one less than Chicago White Sox slugger Munetaka Murakami.
Most importantly, Caglianone did not have the lowest total among participants. That honor goes to New York Yankees first baseman Ben Rice, who had seven. Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber was the last man to qualify for the bracket stage with 10 home runs, meaning Caglianone needed at least two more to get in.
Despite coming up short, Caglianone showed off his premium power and should be back in the Derby at some point in his career. He was tied for the hardest-hit ball of the night at 116 mph; Junior Caminero did it twice in the first round. Philadelphia fans pride themselves on their blue collar nature; on their up by the bootstraps always the underdog, never fully respected position in the sports firmament. And their ardor runs deep; no visitor is safe – not even Santa Clause – from their vitriol.
On Monday night in Philly, in the 40th iteration of the Home Run Derby since it was brought back in 1985, those fans showed up to Citizens Bank Park for their hometown players Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, and showed out for everyone else. The more than 43,000 in attendance ******* ily booed everyone not wearing Phillies red, with the loudest saved for Ben Rice of the Yankees (a “Yankees suck” chant, usually reserved for Fenway Park, even erupted at one point).
During the introductions, Schwarber and Harper were saved for last, and the crowd erupted as each climbed into the home plate shaped ring erected behind second base. And then it was on.
The nearly three-hour event, broadcast for the first time on Netflix, started off with a bang. Boston’s Willson Contreras led things off with 13 home runs – seven in his first ten swings – with four traveling at least 470 feet, and one landing 490 feet from home. Jordan Walker of the Cardinals matched him with 13 of his own. All of that was prologue for what was to come.
Philadelphia fans pride themselves on their blue collar nature; on their up by the bootstraps always the underdog, never fully respected position in the sports firmament. And their ardor runs deep; no visitor is safe – not even Santa Clause – from their vitriol.
On Monday night in Philly, in the 40th iteration of the Home Run Derby since it was brought back in 1985, those fans showed up to Citizens Bank Park for their hometown players Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, and showed out for everyone else. The more than 43,000 in attendance ******* ily booed everyone not wearing Phillies red, with the loudest saved for Ben Rice of the Yankees (a “Yankees suck” chant, usually reserved for Fenway Park, even erupted at one point).
During the introductions, Schwarber and Harper were saved for last, and the crowd erupted as each climbed into the home plate shaped ring erected behind second base. And then it was on.
The nearly three-hour event, broadcast for the first time on Netflix, started off with a bang. Boston’s Willson Contreras led things off with 13 home runs – seven in his first ten swings – with four traveling at least 470 feet, and one landing 490 feet from home. Jordan Walker of the Cardinals matched him with 13 of his own. All of that was prologue for what was to come.

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene and two New York Yankees, first baseman Ben Rice and outfielder Cody Bellinger, gained American League starting spots because of injuries.
Rice, third in the major leagues with 29 home runs behind Schwarber (32) and the Houston Astros’ Yordan Alvarez (31), starts at first because Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is skipping the game to rest a bad back. Guerrero’s initial replacement, the Athletics’ Nick Kurtz, sprained his thumb.

Major League Baseball's All Star celebration technically got underway yesterday even though they basically buried the Futures Game from existence by playing it concurrent with actual MLB games – Alfredo Duno started, caught 4.0 IP, and hit a 400 foot fly ball to CF that was caught.
Tonight, though, comes the Home Run Derby, and MLB isn't about to take that lightly in the marketing department. In fact, they've gone out of their way to hype the revamped format, and this edition will be carried by Netflix and Netflix only.
The event gets underway at 8 PM ET. It'll feature Red Sox slugger Willson Contreras, Jordan Walker of St. Louis, Jac Caglianone from Kansas City, Munetaka Murakami of the Pale Hose, Yankees slugger Ben Rice, Tampa's Junior Caminero, and a pair of Philadelphia homers in Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper (the event and All Star Game are in Philadelphia, if you weren't aware).
A fun twist this year is that there's no longer a timed clock against which the sluggers must face – this time, they'll get a finite number of swings and the most dingers launched on those swings takes the cake. Philadelphia Phillies slugger and former Middletown High School standout Kyle Schwarber appeared on "Pat McAfee Show" ahead of Schwarber taking part in the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby, and talked about how the derby reminds him of growing up as a Reds fan and pretending he was Reds Hall of Famer and former Moeller High School standout Ken Griffey Jr.
"I grew up in Cincinnati (as a) Reds fan," Schwarber said. "Griffey, hat backwards. Like growing up playing tee ball. I've got a wood bat. There's a picture of me. It's funny. … I've got my hat backwards, wood bat. And I'm trying to hit the Griffey tilt. And that was just another cool moment of just thinking about the Home Run Derby. We always played that growing up in the backyard. We had an above-ground pool. And then we had a short fence in left (field)."

Eight players are set to face off in the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby at 8 p.m. ET on July 13 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Two Phillies players will participate: Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. The other six are Jac Caglianone of the Kansas City Royals, Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays, Willson Contreras of the Boston Red Sox, Ben Rice of the New York Yankees, Jordan Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals and Munetaka Murakami of the Chicago White Sox.
Unsurprisingly, that list includes some of baseball's best home run hitters this season. Schwarber leads MLB with 32 homers, while Rice is third with 29 and Caminero is tied for fourth with 28. Four of the remaining five have gone long at least 20 times.

MLB announced the starting lineups for tomorrow night's All-Star Game, and as planned two Yankees will feature. Cody Bellinger starts in right and bats sixth, while Ben Rice starts at first and bats seventh:
The pair of Bombers come after a star-studded top five in the AL lineup, starting with Mike Trout in center, Yordan Alvarez at DH, Shea Langliers at catcher, Junior Caminero at third, and Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop. Riley Greene in left and Ernie Clement at second round out the lineup. Rice is somewhat hard-done-by with his slot in the lineup, his 166 wRC+ second in the AL behind only Alvarez, and Langliers is a curious choice from manager John Schneider (to bat third, the catcher having a great season but lacking the offensive skillset and pedigree of most of the other starters.
Otherwise, the lineup seems fair enough on paper, and it's very cool to see Trout, the once-and-forever legend who's been derailed by injuries, slot in at the top, in the midst of a resurgent (and yet still injury-ridden) campaign. He and Alvarez form an awesome one-two, and though I would personally have slotted Rice right in there at the three spot, it's hard to argue with Caminero and Witt's positions, the pair each among the game's brightest young stars.

With another heat wave ramping up in Philadelphia, conditions could be ideal for the long ball at Citizens Bank Park on Monday as the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby takes center stage of All-Star Week festivities.
