Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Note: It was 58 years ago (Aug. 27, 1968) that I first reported for work at United Press International in Chicago, five floors above the Billy Goat Tavern. I've been writing for the company continuously ever since. Sunday will be the 45th anniversary of the first horse race I covered for UPI -- the inaugural Arlington Million.
It's a good thing it's a quiet week on the international front because the North American horse racing schedule is jam packed with goodies. There are five Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" races and three others that offer purses of $1 million or more.
One of those seven-figure purses is the $1.25 million Grade I Travers at Saratoga, the "Midsummer Derby" with Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo seeking a virtual lock on year-end honors.
Another is the $1.75 million Grade I Ladies Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs, where the advertised purses are for Kentucky-breds. Others run for reduced amounts. The third is Friday's $1 million Grade II Charles Town Classic in West Virginia.
The Travers is one of the few remaining chances for 3-year-olds to run against their peers before trying their luck with older horses.

Gregory Rodrigues got the biggest win of his career at UFC Sacramento and that came as the highest paid fighter on the card as well.
On Saturday, the California State Athletic Commission released the salaries to MMA Fighting with Rodrigues leading the way with a $340,000 payday after earning $170,000 to show and another $170,000 for his win bonus.
As for his main event opponent, Anthony "Fluffy" Hernandez, he took home $170,000, and would have earned another $170,000 as his win bonus. Unfortunately, Hernandez came up short, dropping his second fight in a row overall.
In the co-main event, Serghei Spivac took home $125,000 in show money while his opponent Vitor Petrino was paid $100,000 in show money with another $100,000 as a win bonus for the fight to put him at $200,000 for the victory.
These purses represent the disclosed salaries provided to the commission. They do not reflect any extra bonuses paid to the fighters by the UFC.

Tiger Woods went to the top of the PGA Tour career money list when he was runner-up at Torrey Pines on Feb. 13, 2000, and he has stayed there ever since. His last check for finishing last at the 2024 Masters ($44,400) pushed his career earnings to $120,999,166.
Being passed is inevitable and now is in clear view. It's just a matter of who tops him first.

The PGA Tour has begun revealing which tournaments will become Championship Series events in 2028 when a new two-track model is implemented.
First up for the PGA Tour's top-tier Championship Series is the Travelers Championship, which has been played annually at TPC River Highlands just outside Hartford, Connecticut, each June, typically the week after the U.S. Open. Since 2023, the Travelers has been one of eight $20 million signature events on the PGA Tour. The announcement was made on Monday.
In 2028, the PGA Tour Championship Series will comprise roughly 15 regular-season events, in addition to the four major championships, Players Championship, and playoff events. Purses for the PGA Tour-operated events (the non-majors) will be at least $20 million, with some tournaments like the Players and a revamped Tour Championship offering even more prize money. The second-tier Challenger Series will comprise at least 20 events, each offering much lower purses of at least $4 million. Both series will run from approximately February to August, and will include annual promotion and relegation between the circuits.
"Right now we have 47 events at the PGA Tour—we'll have 47 events going forward," PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said when he unveiled the plans for the new scheduling model in June. "That current model serves roughly 230 players. We'll serve that amount of players, the same. We are just organized now in a more simple understanding competitively so our fans can understand it, our partners know what they're getting as far as value. So we think we've just organized the same tour into a much more interesting and competitive system."
The second confirmed Championship Series event will be sponsored by Sompo, a ***** anese insurance and financial services firm, the PGA Tour announced on Tuesday. The event's market has yet to be determined, though. In 2027, Sompo will back a full-field (non-signature) PGA Tour event at Silverado Resort's North Course in Napa, California, July 29 to Aug. 1—effectively replacing the Rocket Classic in Detroit, which is leaving the PGA Tour schedule after this season. In 2028, the Sompo event will relocate to a new market as part of the transition to the Championship Series.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The LPGA on Tuesday unveiled the inaugural Nanea Cup, an event being held in Hawaii next March that includes a mix of pro golfers and collegians as a way to showcase the present and future of women's golf.
The event, which will be held March 11-14 at the Nanea Golf Club in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island, features a $4 million purse. The field will include 95 LPGA Tour players along with 25 of the nation's top college golfers representing five universities: Stanford, Texas, Arkansas, Texas A&M and UCLA.
"As we continue to focus on routing, courses and purses, this event checks every box," LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler said in a statement. "Nanea is a spectacular venue, our athletes will compete for a strong purse, and fans will get their first look at one of the most celebrated golf courses in the world."
All competitors will play Thursday and Friday before the field is cut to the low 50 players and ties. College players who don't make the cut will still play Saturday to help determine team champions.
The Golf Channel will broadcast stories on college athletes and coaches to give a glimpse of the next generation of players.

Detroit — Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, one of the biggest names in the sport who defected to LIV Golf in 2022 before returning to the PGA Tour earlier this year, will play in the Rocket Classic later this month.
A tournament official confirmed Koepka's commitment Monday.
It will be Koepka's first time playing the Rocket Classic, which will be played for the eighth and final time July 30-Aug. 2 at Detroit Golf Club. Koepka adds to a field that already includes world No. 4 Cameron Young, world No. 8 and two-time U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, and world No. 14 and two-time major champion Xander Schauffele.
Koepka became the first player to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf and then return to the PGA Tour when he was let out of his LIV Golf contract early in January. With his return to the PGA Tour came several significant financial penalties, including ineligibility for 2026 FedEx Cup bonus payouts.
But Koepka still is eligible to compete in playoff events and for those tournament purses if he qualifies. He's currently 84th in the playoff points race, and he'd make the first playoff event if he finishes the regular season in the top 70.

A man who resembles Travis Kelce has Salem, New Hampshire, buzzing.
The Salem New Hampshire Police Department is searching for a suspect whose photos suggest he's a dead ringer for the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. Officers shared three images of the unidentified man in a Wednesday, June 24, Facebook post as part of the department's recurring "Wanted Wednesday" series, alleging he stole a purse from inside a vehicle, then used the victim's credit cards.
"Today we have a suspect that apparently doesn't know he can't take others things," the department wrote, adding, "Purses. Money. Bucket hats." Officers then addressed the suspect directly: "GUESS WHAT PAL, you may look like Travis Kelce, TE for the Kansas City Chiefs and, possibly his more well known claim to fame, current fiancé of Taylor Swift, but your good looks and cool sty (kids call it "sty" I think.) can't get you outta this one!"
While Salem police hunt for their look-alike, the real Kelce, 36, has a far more glamorous event ahead. As In Touch exclusively revealed, Kelce and Swift, 36, are set to marry at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Most notably, the Tour will now have two different competitive tracks for players, the Championship and Challenger series. The Tour's season will also end in a new playoff format, distinctive from the current Tour Championship. These changes will begin with the 2028 season.
"At its core, this work was driven by a simple objective: To build the best version of the PGA Tour, something that could endure and outlive us all," PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said in announcing the new framework. "So where did we land? One tour, two compelling series of events, played at the most worthy courses for the highest stakes, culminating in a true postseason that crowns the best golfer in the world."
The new format was developed by the tour's Future Competition Committee, a nine-member organization chaired by Tiger Woods that includes five players — Patrick Cantlay, Maverick McNealy, Keith Mitchell, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas and Woods, as well as executives Joe Gorder, John Henry and Theo Epstein. The Future Competition Committee, formed in August 2025, sought to improve the consistency and quality of fields across the regular season, create a clear system for promotion/relegation, and develop a more competitive experience, with meritocracy as a central goal.

CROMWELL, Conn. – The PGA Tour unveiled a new competitive structure on Tuesday that will begin in 2028 and feature a two-tiered system – a Championship Series for the game’s elite players and a Challenger Series that will be the primary pathway to the upper track.
The Championship Series will feature 23-24 events, including the four major championships, The Players Championship, the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cups and a reimagined playoff. According to a press release, the Tour has an initial set of 10 regular season Championship Series events, which are likely some combination of existing signature events and new events. The full 2028 schedule is expected to be announced early next year.
“The remaining events will either be filled by existing events or new markets under consideration such as Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.,” the press release read.
The Tour policy boards approved the new competitive model on Monday, including a reimagined postseason that will involve some version of match play and a rotation of courses for the Tour Championship, which has been played at East Lake in Atlanta since 2004.
Championship Series events will feature 120-player fields with a 36-hole cut and $20 million purses, while the Challenger Series will include 20 events with 144-players fields with a 36-hole cut and $4 million purses. The new model doesn’t include any midseason promotion opportunities to the Championship Series, like the current Tour system via the Aon points lists, but any players who wins multiple times on the Challenger Series in a single season would earn immediate status into Championship Series events.
The Championship Series will feature 23-24 events, including the four major championships, The Players Championship, the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cups and a reimagined playoff. According to a press release, the Tour has an initial set of 10 regular season Championship Series events, which are likely some combination of existing signature events and new events. The full 2028 schedule is expected to be announced early next year.
“The remaining events will either be filled by existing events or new markets under consideration such as Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.,” the press release read.
The Tour policy boards approved the new competitive model on Monday, including a reimagined postseason that will involve some version of match play and a rotation of courses for the Tour Championship, which has been played at East Lake in Atlanta since 2004.
Championship Series events will feature 120-player fields with a 36-hole cut and $20 million purses, while the Challenger Series will include 20 events with 144-players fields with a 36-hole cut and $4 million purses. The new model doesn’t include any midseason promotion opportunities to the Championship Series, like the current Tour system via the Aon points lists, but any players who wins multiple times on the Challenger Series in a single season would earn immediate status into Championship Series events.

The USGA announced this week that it is putting up a $22.5 million purse, which is a $1 million increase from last season. That means that the winner of the major championship on Sunday night at Shinnecock Hills will take home a $4.5 million check.
The purse matches what Augusta National offered for the Masters earlier this season, which is the largest in men's major championship history. The PGA of America had a $20.5 million purse for the PGA Championship last month. While it's not known what the British Open will offer next month, it had a $17 million purse last season.
By comparison, the PGA Tour's signature events typically offer $20 million purses. The Players Championship tops the list at $25 million. The last time the U.S. Open was held at Shinnecock Hills in 2018, Brooks Koepka took home a $2.16 million check for his victory. That was part of a $12 million purse.
Wyndham Clark has dominated so far at Shinnecock Hills this week. He set the course's 36-hole record by getting to 7-under on Friday afternoon, which ended up giving him a four-shot lead over the field entering the weekend.
