Celtic take on Aberdeen in a midweek Scottish Premiership showdown on Wednesday at Celtic Park, aiming to kick off their campaign with four straight league victories.
Celtic come into this game in flawless domestic shape, occupying the summit of the Scottish Premiership after winning each of their first three league matches. Their latest outing saw them edge past Falkirk with a gritty 2-1 win. Morale is sky-high after earlier commanding 4-0 and 5-1 domestic successes, even though they hit a rough patch in European action. Importantly, the Hoops boast a spotless home record at Celtic Park this term, having yet to drop points on their own turf.
Celtic receive a major lift before this midweek Scottish Premiership fixture as skipper Callum McGregor rejoins the group after shaking off a recent illness.
That said, the ***** le-holders are coping with an expanding injury roll, especially among attackers and defenders. Striker Kasper Høgh and left-back Kieran Tierney are both completely out for this match after picking up abductor problems that kept them off the training pitch.
Callum Osmand also faces multiple weeks away because of an ankle knock. Long-term casualties Alistair Johnston, Jota, and Reo Hatate stay sidelined as they work through their rehabilitation programs.

Celtic put the pain of the demoralising midweek defeat in Linz, by overcoming Falkirk 2-1 at Celtic Park thanks to a Camilo Duran first half brace.
And despite a nervy last 20 minutes due to the Bairns pulling a goal back, the players held on to make it three league wins out of three. Afterwards the Celtic manager was clearly pleased to see his side return to winning ways especially after returning from Linz having suffered a demoralising defeat having played 120 minutes of football mostly on the back foot.
Speaking to in-house club media Celtic-player after the game, the veteran Irishman said: "The win was the most important thing, it always is.
"It was a tough week for everyone connected to the football club, not just us, but the people who pay their money to come and support us, and we let them down on Tuesday. So we're absolutely delighted to have won the game.

Our weekly Premier League Team of the Week is back for another edition. From impressive debutants to players already in red-hot scoring form, we've selected the best-performing XI from the second round of Premier League fixtures. Who made the cut?
Consecutive clean sheets in what has been a dream start to the season forHull City and their new goalkeeper. The Greek international got down low to brilliantly stop Taiwo Awoniyi's effort in a match-winning moment for The Tigers.
A terrific start to his Newcastle career. After two ***** ists in the League Cup in midweek, Dedic was impressive again as the Magpies won at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Bosnian was a brilliant outlet and set up Anthony Elanga's opener after another adventurous run, while staying solid defensively with five clearances, five recoveries and 4/5 ground duels won.
Mukiele made his mark on his return to theSunderland side with a string of defensive contributions as Regis Le Bris' side got up and running for the season with a win. The Frenchman made a massive 14 clearances on route to a clean sheet against Fulham, and did not lose a single ground duel.

The Cardiff game probably left Sheffield United fans slightly puzzled about what to expect in the coming weeks. Boss Chris Wilder himself admitted he was left scratching his head at such an open and breathless game.
However, some encouragement emerged in the form of a first Championship goal of the new season.
It comes after a measly combined total of just four shots on target from the opening two league games. Questions loomed about where the goals would come from this season.
Some answers were found at Cardiff City Stadium.
Tom Cannon's successful penalty was his second goal in two games, having netted in the EFL Cup in midweek. A goal from open play was even more encouraging, with Callum O'Hare looking like one of Sheffield United's bigger attacking threats.

Real Madrid are aiming to make it three wins from three at the start of the 2026-27 season when they host Malaga at the Bernabeu on Sunday evening. Jose Mourinho has made a positive impression since returning to the club earlier this summer, although he will be after a more complete performers against the newly-promoted Andalusians.
It's been a busy eight days for Real Madrid. They started their season last Saturday with a narrow 2-1 win at Espanyol, before a much more convincing victory at home to Real Sociedad on Wednesday. They will hope to complete the week in style, and they are overwhelming favourites to return to La Liga summit with another three points – for a few hours at least.
Two players in particular have made excellent starts to the season for Real Madrid – those being Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe – and they will hope to continue their form against Malaga. The former is off the back of an excellent hat-trick in midweek, while Bellingham has registered one goal and two ***** ists in Los Blancos' first two matches.
For the first time in over eight years, this fixture is being played. Malaga's promotion back to La Liga was welcomed by a lot of Spanish football enjoyers, although they have not made the best start to life in the top flight with one draw (vs Deportivo La Coruna) and one defeat (vs Atletico Madrid) in their opening two matches. They will be massive underdogs at the Bernabeu, but if they are to produce a shock, their man to watch will be star striker Chupe – he scored 25 goals in the Segunda last season, while also netting their only goal of the current campaign against Deportivo last weekend.
Real Madrid will certainly fancy their chances of winning this one, which kicks off at the Bernabeu at 5pm CEST (4pm BST, 11am EDT, 8am PST).

Tottenham have been dealt a cruelly-timed injury blow after Savio was denied a Premier League debut for the club due to a muscular issue.
Savio joined Spurs from Manchester City in an eye-watering £85m deal but got off to a perfect start for the Lilywhites in midweek, coming off the bench and immediately scoring in the 5-0 Carabao Cup win over Charlton.
He was expected to make his league bow for Spurs alongside fellow ex-City team-mate Omar Marmoush against Newcastle in Saturday's late kick-off, but was notable for his absence in the matchday squad.
Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi has now explained why the Brazilian missed out on the visit of the Magpies.
"We had some bad news yesterday," he told Sky Sports. "He suffered muscular fatigue. The medical staff didn't want to take a risk. I agree with them."

As sports betting continues to proliferate, college football is taking more steps aimed at minimizing inside information.
Via the **** ociated Press, the Big Ten announced on Friday that it will expand its requirement to submit player availability reports from one per week to four.
The rule, which applies only to in-conference games, mandates the submission of a report on each of the three days before a game, with a final report provided on game day.
The midweek reports require teams to identify players as probable, questionable, doubtful, out, or out for the first half. On game day, the categories will be game-time decision, out, or out for the first half.
The existence, and misuse, of inside information regarding player injuries continues to be one of the biggest potential sources of betting scandals. With more information provided to the public, less information will be private — and less information will be available to provide the basis for wagering by those who have access to it.

Newcastle United travel to North London on Saturday still searching for their first league win of the season, having twice led at home to Liverpool before a stoppage-time penalty earned the visitors a point. Matthias Jaissle's side backed that performance up with a 3-2 Carabao Cup win over West Bromwich Albion in midweek.
Newly-appointed captain Dan Burn remains out with ankle ligament damage, and Joelinton (groin) and Tino Livramento (calf) are also sidelined. William Osula is still nursing a foot injury and remains unavailable. New signing Bazoumana Toure scored against West Brom despite "feeling a bit of pain" during that match and is expected to be fit for Saturday.
Nico Gonzalez, unveiled to supporters as a £50 million signing from Manchester City before the West Brom win, could be handed his Newcastle debut, though that would likely mean either Lewis Miley or fellow new arrival Sean Steur making way.
Anthony Elanga, who opened the scoring against Liverpool, is expected to be preferred to Jacob Murphy on the right, while Harvey Barnes, who scored twice against West Brom, and Toure compete for the left-wing spot.
With Osula still unavailable, Nick Woltemade is set to retain his place in attack alongside Yoane Wissa. Amar Dedic, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman and Lewis Hall are expected to form the back four in front of Lukas Horníček, who has taken over as Newcastle's goalkeeper for the time being.

Borussia Dortmund's seven year high points tally wasn't enough to win the Bundesliga last season but they have reinforced this season with a Greek duo of Konstantinos Karetsas and Giannis Konstantelias.
Dortmund also started this season off on a strong foot despite losing 2-1 against Bayern in the super cup as they were a Maximilian Beier golden chance away from making it to extra time.
They have a somewhat busy schedule for this early on in the season as their delayed DFB Pokal game is to be played midweek next week against Hamburg-Eimsbütteler from the fifth tier in which they may rest players.
Despite this, Dortmund have an amazing record against Hamburg as they haven't lost in 11 years against the side from north Germany.
Serhou Guirassy will look to continue where he left off last season as he scored his 17th goal in the Bundesliga on the final matchday to become Dortmund's top scorer in consecutive seasons.

The Scottish Premiership returns for 10 clubs this weekend after only two sides played last time out.
Five clubs were given more time to prepare for European play-off fixtures and, while Hearts succeeded in their task of progression, Rangers, Hibernian and Motherwell all missed out on the Conference League.
Celtic crumbled in the second leg of their Champions League play-off against LASK, although they have the compensation of still being in Europe in the Europa League.
Those midweek results beg questions before Saturday and Sunday's games.

Brentford boss Keith Andrews has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Leeds United at Elland Road (kick-off 14:00 BST).
Here are the key lines from his news conference:
Andrews said there are no injuries to his squad and the team "came through midweek really well".
New defender El Hadji Malick Diouf is a "very good player". Andrews said: "I thought he had some eye-catching performances [last season at West Ham]. He fits what we are about, age profile, attributes and he comes into it in an already competitive squad."
On 25-year-old Keane Lewis-Potter: "He is versatile, it is a super strength. Before we signed Malick I said we could play Keano in different positions throughout the season. I don't think that will change."

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson expects Birmingham City to make changes to their team for their Championship game tonight (20:00 BST) after the Blues were hammered by Brentford in the EFL Cup in midweek.
Like Wrexham, the Blues have drawn both of their two Championship matches so far this season.
But Chris Davies' men were thrashed 6-1 by the Premier League Bees in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night - with the 41-year-old head coach receiving criticism of late.
Despite the noise surrounding Davies' position as Birmingham boss, Parkinson says the Red Dragons' sole focus will be on building from the positives of their 1-1 league draw with Watford last time out.
"There will be changes I should imagine in the (Birmingham) team, first of all because it was a cup game, secondly because of the result and there will be a reaction," Parkinson said.

Newcastle United will clash heads with Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Saturday as they look to secure a good result on the road in the Premier League. The Magpies managed to earn a narrow 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion in midweek, which should give them some confidence ahead of this league match this weekend.
Matthias Jaissle will set his players up in a 4-2-3-1 formation and could make some changes to his first XI for this game. We can expect to see Nick Woltemade get the nod to lead the charge for the Tyneside club up top.
Lukas Hornicek will operate in goal for the Magpies after allowing two goals in his last league outing. Sven Botman will resume his partnership with Malick Thiaw at the centre of the Newcastle backline as they try to frustrate the home team during the 90 minutes.
Amar Dedic will fill in as the right-back, while Lewis Hall hopes to give a good account of himself on the other side as the left-back. Both of them will get the license to go forward and express themselves inside the opponent's half.
Fabian Schar will offer cover for the defensive positions on the bench.

Dženan Pejčinovic could hardly have made a better first impression in Stuttgart.
Just weeks after completing a €25 million move from Wolfsburg, the striker marked his competitive debut with a hat-trick against Hansa Rostock in the DFB-Pokal.
After making an "absolute dream start" to life at the club, Pejčinović opened up on his Stuttgart move in this week's "Midweek Interviews" segment by the Bundesliga.
"If I can say what I actually wanted, then of course it was for us to go through. That was the big goal for me," the 21-year-old said, after the 2025 Pokal champions and 2026 finalists put four past third-tier side Rostock.
"But I approached it very cautiously and said that first of all I wanted to do the job and help the team win. Of course, if a goal came with it, that would be great for me.

Barcelona will play their first home LaLiga fixture of the season at the Camp Nou on Thursday, hosting Athletic Club in a midweek encounter.
The hosts arrive in excellent form after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Elche that launched their campaign. Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona have displayed sharp tactics and a potent attacking threat. They have claimed three wins in their past five league outings, with their forward play clicking — averaging just over two goals per game during that period.
FC Barcelona look set to hand a long-awaited club debut to high-profile summer signing Rodri, who has completed successive training sessions following a minor back operation and is expected to be named among the substitutes.
Flick appears ready to tweak his back line at the Spotify Camp Nou, with Pau Cubarsí, Jules Koundé and João Cancelo likely to return to the starting XI after being rested last time out.
The Catalans do, however, face a midfield concern as Gavi is doubtful after suffering a heavy knee contusion against Elche; scans excluded a serious ligament injury, but he missed the squad's final training session.

It was a tumultuous weekend for the Yankees. Cody Bellinger returned Sunday, providing a much-needed jolt to a lineup that's been anemic in his and Aaron Judge's absences. But Giancarlo Stanton suffered a setback that could end his season (and, with it, perhaps his tenure in pinstripes). And Ryan Weathers, who had posted a 2.27 ERA in seven starts since the All-Star break, landed on the shelf with a forearm strain.
Amid the injury news, the Yankees quietly went on a heater, winning six of their last seven while taking series against two AL East foes, Baltimore and Toronto. This week, they'll be hosting the Astros, a team that just fired GM Dana Brown after dropping six of their last eight despite still tying for first place in a tight AL West. Let's take a look at the likely starting pitching matchups for this midweek set.
Tuesday: Will Warren vs. Ethan Pecko (7:05 pm ET)
Just over a week ago, it looked like Will Warren was about to lose his rotation spot, bouncing either to the bullpen or the minors upon Carlos Rodón's return. Now, with Max Fried and Weathers on the IL, he's the Yankees' No. 4 starter. After a strong start to the year he's struggled, going 1-1 with a 6.08 ERA since the All-Star break and turning in just one quality start since the end of May. Last time out, he needed 90 pitches to get through four innings of work in Baltimore, allowing six baserunners and two runs.
He's lined up to face Ethan Pecko. The right-hander will be pitching on his 24th birthday, six days after making his MLB debut against the Angels in which he allowed two runs in 3.2 innings. He featured a four-seamer and a sinker in that start, mixing in four complementary pitches. Pecko was 4-6 with a 4.94 ERA in 17 outings (15 starts) at Triple-A before getting the call.

The White Sox week started by getting walked off on back-to-back nights, there was a midweek goose egg to lose a makeup game to Atlanta, and then the pitching gave up 10 runs to a Mets team that is well worse than .500. Oh, and not to mention, it's the middle of a 16-game stretch, so Chicago's pitching staff was extremely taxed.
So much so that when Will Venable was asked this week what the plan was for the North Side portion of the Crosstown Classic, he told reporters there wasn't one. I am no idiot. I know this was likely a half-truth. There had to be concepts of a plan. That plan was "The Opener."
Following a loss that was lead off by and ended by Pete Crow-Armstrong home runs, Bryan Hudson was tapped to start Tuesday's duel against the Cubs. He gave up a pair of homers in his opening inning before he turned it over to Erick Fedde for 4 2/3 innings of scoreless work. In the end, Huascar Brazobán and his one-third of an inning would be enough to lose Fedde the bid for the win and allow Alex Bregman to walk things off in the ninth.
Sean Newcomb opened the last game at Wrigley. He earned one more inning than Hudson did the day prior, keeping the game scoreless before turning things over to the bulk reliever. The strategy worked well for the White Sox, with José Urquidy going six innings and striking out eight Cubbies en route to a 3-0 victory to avoid a sweep. Sometimes veterans still have some of that young stud left in them. It's nice when they allow it to peak out in-between the past-their-prime outings.

Camilo Duran has impressed plenty of people during his short time at the club, even more so after his midweek heroics against LASK in the 3-0 Champions League play off win at Celtic Park.
Signed for a fee believed to be worth upwards of £6 million from Azerbaijan side Qarabag, the player has impressed with his boundless energy, and ability in front of goal, naturally leading to comparisons with the man he's said to have replaced – Daizen Maeda.
Former Celtic skipper Charlie Mulgrew is one of those who believes that the Colombian is similar to the **** anese International, even claiming that he's an upgrade on the man who left for Ipswich in a £10 million deal.
Mulgrew recently told Go Radio listeners:

A three-goal-scorer night for the Chrome & Azul sealed the 3-0 Snapdragon Stadium victory against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night, remaining in striking distance of an MLS Cup Playoff position.
Revenge was on the minds of SDFC coming into the game day, with their previous battle at ******* 's Sporting Goods Park back on July 22 ending in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Rapids off the back of a Loïc Williams 90+6-minute winner.
San Diego FC looked to improve from their midweek performance at Providence Park, as their playoff hopes took another hit on Wednesday night, falling 3-1 to the Portland Timbers.
Coming into their twenty-first matchday of the MLS Regular Season, SDFC sat in 13th place in the Western Conference, with Saturday holding crucial points in their tight postseason race, trailing only three points of the final Wild Card position.
The biggest changes to the starting SDFC XI came with newly signed Tusinan winger Elias Achouri, making his first start for the Chrome & Azul after his first two appearances off the substitute bench.

In the Bundesliga's latest "Midweek Interview", Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had a chance to talk about the upcoming season and the changes to the BVB squad. The departure of Julian Brandt, Karim Adeyemi, and Niklas Süle left plenty of ******* e and wages for Ole Book and Lars Ricken to work with.
The signing of Genk's Konstantinos Karetsas, PAOK's Giannis Konstantelias, and PSV's Joey Veerman in the build up to the season kick-off has certainly given Dortmund fans something to be excited about. Kobel knows that a step-up is required, but shares his enthusiasm:
"Today was only my first real team training. But with Karetsas, our new Greek talent, you don't need a lot of time to see that he has a lot of quality on the ball, that he's a great player and that he has a lot of potential. We have a lot of young guys with a lot of potential, and I'm really excited about what they can bring to the team and about their everyday work. They're going to improve and feel how the game is played here. Maybe it's a little faster, maybe it's a little more physical, depending on which league you're coming from. We'll see."
There are big expectations, especially on the shoulders of BVB's Greek signings. The 28-year-old notes that they can't rely on their new signings to fly from day one. He continues:
"If you play for Dortmund, you know how it is: you need to get your qualities onto the pitch every three days. But on the other hand, with a lot of young guys, it's not fair to expect them to carry the team every three days. It's going to be a team effort. The guys who have been here longer need to bring them together, prepare them for the season and help them build their confidence. The other guys, of course, need to show their talent as well."

After a blistering start to their domestic season, Celtic will begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday night by hosting LASK in the first leg of the play-off round. The spirit must be high in the camp after the weekend's thumping 4-0 League Cup win at Tannadice Park against Dundee United. But the Austrian heavyweights, who won their first league ****** le in 61 years, would be more resolute in deep defence.
Meanwhile, the LASK boss Dietmar Kühbauer considers the home side favourites for this European encounter. However, he calls for a balanced and proactive performance in Glasgow rather than a purely defensive approach, and this midweek contest would be a tactical battle between two domestic champions in their first-ever competitive meeting for a lucrative league-phase spot in this coveted tournament.
The Hoops are weighing up a move for another goalkeeper. But they are not in a rush, thanks to Viljami Sinisalo's command and composure ever since replacing the injured Kasper Schmeichel between the sticks earlier this year.

Alistair Johnston's injury is a massive blow, and the gaffer Martin O'Neill is likely to rely on Colby Donovan down the right, having preferred him over Anthony Ralston in recent fixtures. Liam Scales got the nod against the Tangerines as a left fullback, but could make way for Kieran Tierney, who remains the preferred choice for his flair, finesse and trademark crosses. The USMNT duo Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty should continue as the first-team central defensive pairing.

A key part of the Tennessee baseball lineup will miss this fall, according to a VolQuest report on Tuesday morning. Blaine Brown, who will be heading into his second season in Knoxville, underwent Elbow surgery on his left-handed pitching arm. Brown is not expected to pitch in 2027 for Tennessee.
The injury occurred while Brown was playing in the Cape Cod league.
Brown is expected to be good to go for the 2027 season, but could be limited to a designated hitter role to begin the year. The transfer from Rice was inconsistent for the Volunteers last season, but the talent is obvious. It's a huge year for Brown, who is heading into MLB Draft eligibility next summer.
After flashing quite a bit early last season, Brown slumped through the midseason. The 6-5, 200 pounder ended up hitting .240 on the year, hitting 13 home runs and driving in 42 runs. Brown also struck out 53 times.
Brown made just four appearances on the mound for Tennessee, starting a handful of midweek games. He's expected to eventually return to the Tennessee outfield once he's healthy again, where he'll be looking to to capitalize on all of that potential we've already seen.

Sir Alex Ferguson will turn 85 on New Year's Eve. Which, apart from a cause for celebration for many in the Manchester United family, could seem a reflection of failure if this season follows the 13 that went before. United have not mustered a proper ***** le challenge since Ferguson's retirement in 2013 and, in most cases, it has been evident by the end of December that they would not become champions for a 21st time.
They can look at one table to imagine this year will be a break with the recent past: the Carrick table. After Michael Carrick's return to Old Trafford in January, they played 17 games and took 39 points: three more than ***** nal, four better than Manchester City, some 14 more than Liverpool, a massive 18 clear of Chelsea. United could say they were the best team in the league for half a season, albeit when the stakes only involved Champions League qualification and when their peers' calendars were crowded by European and cup games.
Michael Carrick is preparing to battle at home and in Europe this season with Manchester United (Getty)
Carrick's catalytic return has earned him a longer contract, even if it is for just two years, hinting at doubts that Ferguson's former midfielder is really a worthy heir. Carrick's job changes now; United could go from playing 40 matches in a season to 60, to having almost every midweek off to games in virtually all. Given the financial importance of Champions League qualification to United, his employers might settle for simply being in the premier European competition, and its latter stages, again next year. Project 150, chief executive Omar Berrada's aim of making United champions again by 2028, may be quietly parked.
United's fame has outstripped their achievements for too much of the post-Ferguson years. Carrick has been an antidote to that – to Ruben Amorim's quotable brand of failure, in particular – but if he is a quiet man, United seem to have had too quiet a summer. This year, unlike many others, they are nowhere near the top of the spending charts. That may be a sign they are paying a price for past outlay, lacking the funds to compete. Tottenham seemed to take United out of the reckoning by paying £85m for Mateus Fernandes; City did likewise with their record £116m bid for Elliot Anderson.
