KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 (Reuters) - The United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday it was not involved in Malaysia's planned repatriation of Myanmar refugees, and warned that it remains unsafe for them to return to the war-torn country.
Malaysia's Home Ministry said last week it had finalised the first phase of a voluntary repatriation programme that will see 1,476 refugees returned to Myanmar on September 29.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had earlier said Myanmar had agreed to repatriate 5,000 Rohingya, amid rising tensions over the refugees within local communities in Malaysia.
The UNHCR said an ongoing armed conflict and violence across Myanmar meant there could not be a safe, dignified and sustainable voluntary return of refugees.
"Under customary international law – a binding obligation on all states – no one should be sent to a country where their rights or freedoms may be at risk. Any refugee return must be voluntary, based on an informed decision, and take place in conditions of safety and dignity," it said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

"My first experience of a multi-discipline event was at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. The whole experience of being part of the Indian contingent feels really great, and that kind of experience every young cricketer should get. Recalling the Hangzhou experience, the former batting great said, "Obviously, it's not like your mainstream cricket series or tournaments that we've been part of since we started playing for the country. A group of us went to support the Indian badminton team, which was fantastic."
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the seeded teams making the quarterfinals directly, with Afghanistan, ***** an, Nepal, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Oman fighting for the other four knockout berths.
While India will start favourites, they can ill afford to take the other teams lightly, with Nepal giving them a run for their medal in the previous edition before India won by 23 runs to make the semifinals.
India will play a match against ***** an and train in Tokyo for three days before heading to the host city. Laxman pointed to the match against Nepal and said, "One thing which we have learnt playing the game is never underestimate your opponent."

After Nepal ran us close in the previous edition of the Asian Games, their coach invited me to talk to the team, which was an opportunity to share knowledge. It's not just me, but that's the way the entire group of players will approach the experience," Laxman stated.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob was charged Thursday with failing to declare his ****** ets, making him the nation's third leader to face criminal charges after leaving office.
Ismail, 66, pleaded not guilty to a charge under the anti-graft law that alleged he failed to provide a complete declaration of ****** ets following a notice from the anti-corruption agency in January 2025. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Iranian clubs were drawn against Qatari and United Arab Emirates opponents in the group stage of the AFC Champions League Elite on Tuesday despite the ongoing conflict in the region.
Play begins on Sept. 14 with matches involving Iranian teams to be held in neutral countries.
Tehran's Esteghlal and Tabriz-based Tractor will face UAE sides Al Ain, Al Wasl and Shabab Al Ahli, and Qatari clubs Al Gharafa, Al Sadd and Al Shamal.
Esteghlal and Tractor avoided the heavily favored Saudi Arabia contingent.
Since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran in February, Tehran has struck targets in Qatar and the UAE, saying it is retaliating for allowing American bases to be used for strikes.

Malaysia's Sultan Abdullah and former actress Julia Rais' daughter Princess Ilyana of Malaysia, 29, married British racing driver Christopher Froggatt, 32, over the weekend.
The couple gathered their friends and family in Kuala Lumpur, where the bride walked down the aisle in a heavily embroidered column wedding dress by Malaysian designer Radzuan Radziwill. Features included long sleeves, puff shoulders and an embellished skirt, which tied in with Ilyana's glittering bridal jewellery.
As well as an heirloom necklace that fell in the same V-neck as her dress, the bride wore a sentimental tiara that had been in the family for generations – but she opted for the newly-tweaked version.
According to the Royal Watcher, the Queen Azizah Diamond Tiara was originally acquired from the Belgian jeweller Wolfers in Brussels, but it has been loaned to brides such as Tengku Nurul Kamalia for her 2008 wedding to Dato Ahmad Najmi and Puteri Afzan Shakira when she married Khairul Fahmy in 2015.
Three years later, the original design underwent a makeover for the Sultan's daughter Tengku Puteri Iman Afzan's wedding to Tengku Dato Sri Abu Bakar Ahmad in 2018, with three diamond stars added to the middle section for a more striking overall appearance.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The head of U.S. Pacific Command said Monday that coercive actions by China and other actors are challenging regional stability, warning the United States will not allow any nation to dominate the Indo-Pacific.
Admiral Samuel Paparo said some actors were using "false claims of legitimacy" to justify intimidation and coercion.
"That's not the rule of law. That's the rule by law. That distinction between law as a tool of order versus law as a weapon of raw power, is the defining fault line of our time," he said via video link at a regional security conference in Malaysia organized by the U.S. Pacific Command.
Paparo's remarks come as tensions remain high in the South China Sea, where China's expansive maritime claims overlap with those of several Southeast Asian nations. The Philippines has been at the center of a series of confrontations with China, particularly around a disputed shoal, where Chinese and Philippine vessels have repeatedly faced off.
Manila has accused Beijing of dangerous maneuvers, water cannon attacks and attempts to block Philippine resupply missions. China has rejected those accusations and maintains its territorial claims in the disputed waterway.

Malaysia could return to the Formula 1 calendar for the first time since 2017 as the sport eyes up contingency plans for the second half of the 2026 season.
After races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were cancelled in April due to the conflict in the Middle East, F1 is keen to add to its current 22-race calendar and was hopeful of racing in Bahrain in October, in between already scheduled races in Azerbaijan (26 September) and Singapore (11 October).
However, given the recent escalation in the region after the ending of the US-Iran ceasefire, F1 bosses are seeking alternatives and the Sepang International Circuit, just outside Kuala Lumpur, is one option.
Malaysia withdrew from the sport in 2017 when they couldn’t match the host fees required, yet the racetrack is still used regularly for other series such as MotoGP.
In this instance, its proximity to Singapore means a Europe-Asia triple-header, over the last weekend in September and the first two weekends in October, is feasible.

Ride a jet ski through a re-creation of an Alaska mega-tsunami with the help of science
The world’s second-tallest tsunami wave on record tore through the remote Tracy Arm fjord in Alaska last August, leaving immense destruction in its wake.
Luckily, there were no people nearby. But in its aftermath, scientists immediately went to work, piecing together what happens when a mountainside collapse kicks off a mega-tsunami and no one is around to see it.
This is how it happened: On August 10, at 5:30 in the morning, an entire mountainside at the mouth of the receding South Sawyer glacier detached, falling into the ocean and producing a monster wave. At its peak, the wave raced up over 1,500 feet on the opposing wall of the fjord — a height taller than Kuala Lumpur’s twin Petronas towers.
The mega-tsunami wreaked havoc across the landscape, stripping forests down to bare rock, ripping trees out by their roots and hurling boulders.
It also produced a seismic vibration so strong it shook the entire planet for days. Only the second time that an effect like this has been recorded anywhere, it was caused by trapped energy from the wave sloshing around in the fjord for days following the initial event.
