"I want to be alone." The despairing words spoken by Greta Garbo while being spied on by a thief in her 1932 film Grand Hotel, have been injected with chilling new irony. Using the latest AI technique, the starlet has been brought back to life to flog ball bearings in an advert by the industrial Swedish Company SKF. And what a terrifying spectacle it makes.
The lifelike precision is terrific, from the smoky, undulating voice to the thin pencilled eyebrows that twitch between anxiety and hauteur.
At the same time there is something deathly about the figment. What made Garbo so brilliant to watch was that you didn't know where the woman started and the character began; when the camera was rolling she didn't so much perform as emerge. Her AI rendition has magnetism without presence.
True, the animation deploys cutting-edge AI techniques to evade successfully what is known as the "uncanny valley" trap, the nausea that people feel when faced with simulations that nearly – but do not quite – resemble real humans. But simulations like Greta's arguably occupy a new ******* e that one might call the "immaculate void".
Garbo's family gave their permission for the ad. But it's impossible to know how Garbo herself would have felt about it. As we extract commercial value from the departed without their consent, it begs the question: are we any better than Egyptian grave robbers, who sacrilegiously plundered the dead?

Justin Martinez was immaculate on Friday.
To be more specific, the Arizona Diamondbacks reliever threw an immaculate inning against the Texas Rangers, striking out three hitters on three pitches each in the sixth frame. Six of those pitchers were faster than 100 mph.
The victims: Wyatt Langford, Evan Carter and Jake Burger.

With only 123 immaculate innings in MLB history, it remains a feat more rare than a no-hitter, though there have been far more in recent years as pitchers dial up their velocity and throw fewer complete games.

Pierce Brosnan turned the MobLand red carpet into a family affair on Thursday as he stepped out alongside his handsome youngest son, Paris Brosnan.
The 73-year-old actor and Paris, 25, looked remarkably alike as they posed together at the London premiere of the second season of Pierce's hit Paramount+ series.
Pierce looked every inch the former James Bond in an immaculate charcoal pinstripe double-breasted suit, teamed with a crisp white shirt and patterned black tie.
Paris looks just like his famous dad! (@ Mike Marsland/Getty Images for P)
Paris opted for a more relaxed look, pairing brown corduroy trousers with a simple white T-shirt and vintage-style brown leather jacket. With his dark hair swept away from his face, the model and artist appeared to have inherited his father's movie-star good looks.

The A's jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning when Carlos Cortes smacked a 2-run homer to right. Fast forward to the 5th, with the Twins offense still struggling against lefty rookie Gage Jump, Taj threw 9 pitches and all of them were strikes for the first immaculate inning in Twins history. This was surprising to me, I figured Johan Santana or somebody must have done it before, but I guess not.
Things were still looking great for Taj two outs into the 6th inning, but a single by Lawrence Butler, an RBI double by Tommy White, and an RBI single by Donovan Walton pushed their lead to 4 runs.
The one hit the Twins had in the first 6 innings against Jump was a pop up that landed 5 feet from the pitcher's mound in the 4th. I'm not sure how this is considered a hit, but it does help Royce Lewis' batting average, I guess. In the top of the 7th, Royce got himself a "real" hit with a line drive to left. One out later, Kaelen Culpepper doubled to bring in the Twins first run. Then a Brooks Lee double put two in scoring position for Victor Caratini, who grounded out for an RBI to make it a 2-4 game. The final chance for the Twins tonight came with 2 on and 2 out for Luke Keaschall, but he struck out looking to end the threat.
To add injury to insult, Buxton had to leave the game after appearing to aggravate his hip chasing down a ball in the gap in the 7th inning.
In the standings, the Twins sit at 64-69 and may fall to 3 games back in the wild card hunt. Also, the Royals have won 9 straight somehow.

Barcelona clubbed Elche 5-0 to get their La Liga ******* le defence up and running. The Catalan giants made an easy meal of their opponents in a rampant display.
Raphinha opened the scoring with a penalty that he won and set up Karim Adeyemi to double the lead on his debut just before the half-time break.
Anthony Gordon came on as a substitute and ******* isted Raphinha's second, then set up Fermin Lopez's second when he could have shot for himself.
Lopez, who has returned from the injury that forced him to miss the 2026 World Cup, is looking immaculate again this season.
The Spaniard produced a wonderful turn to get past one defender and scored his second, Barca's fifth.

Financial markets are relying on an unusually favourable combination of economic outcomes that may prove difficult to sustain, according to Deutsche Bank, which warned that current valuations leave investors with little room for disappointment.
Macro strategist Henry Allen said risk ***** ets remain strong, with global equity markets trading around record levels. The bank highlighted Bloomberg's index of U.S. financial conditions, which recently reached its loosest level since 1996. Meanwhile, both headline and core inflation remain above central bank targets across most major economies.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The vibes for Mike McCarthy and Eli Heidenreich over the last few months have been immaculate. How could they not be?
The chance for McCarthy to lead his hometown team brought the first-year Pittsburgh Steelers coach to tears when he was hired in January. The image last April of Heidenreich walking onto the draft stage in full Naval dress uniform outside Acrisure Stadium — just a few miles from the Mount Lebanon neighborhood where he grew up — felt like something out of a movie.
Their respective homecomings have provided plenty of "fairy tale" narratives during an eventful offseason for the typically low-key Steelers. And while there will be a little bit of "hey, is this really happening?" on Thursday night when they walk onto the field for the first time as the Steelers host Green Bay in the preseason opener, they're both aware of the reality check that awaits under the lights.
"Naturally, there's some people that might ******* ume that it was like you said, like a hometown pick or whatever, whatever someone wants to say," Heidenreich said. "But I'm here to play football, and that's it."
Good thing, because evolving from a seventh-round flyer following a record-setting career at Navy — where he set program marks for career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns — into an NFL roster spot will take some doing. ******* ody knows that more than the 6-foot, 206-pound Heidenreich, who politely dismissed comparisons between himself and San Francisco 49ers running back and 2023 NFL Offense Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey.

The Princess of Wales' beautiful brunette hair has become just as synonymous with her royal image as her immaculate wardrobe. The 'Kate effect' has influenced women's haircuts for decades, and shows no sign of slowing down.
Whether Princess Kate is debuting a fresh set of face-framing curtain bangs or unveiling a glossy, chocolate brown refresh, fans flock to copy her iconic looks.
As a senior member of the royal family and future Queen Consort, the Princess has done little by way of 'hair transformations' over the years, staying loyal to her signature chocolate brown 'do and only altering it slightly in the 15 years she's been married to Prince William.

After playing six seasons in Atlanta and nine in MLS, Brooks Lennon put together a list of teams he thought were good fits to continue his career.
More: Columbus Crew sign MLS veteran Brooks Lennon to one-year deal
The Crew sat right at the top with their immaculate training facility, an energetic stadium, passionate fans and a playing style that caught Lennon's attention. His decision to sign June 9 became an easy one when the Crew extended a one-year deal plus two club options.
"When I knew my time with Atlanta was coming to an end, I put [together] a list of teams that I would like to see myself go to, and that I could see myself contributing to most," Lennon said Aug. 3. "Columbus was at the top of that list."
Lennon, 28, made his Crew debut Aug. 1 with a late appearance subbing for Jamal Thiaré at Nu Stadium in Miami to help secure a 2-2 draw against Lionel Messi and the reigning MLS champions.

Advanced stats say this Guardians slugger is primed for a big second half originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Cleveland Guardians are right in the thick of things in the American League Central. While they have the same number of wins as the Chicago White Sox, the Sox edge out the Guardians in terms of win percentage.
And with the return of Munetaka Murakami, Cleveland knows they are going to have to be at their best the rest of the way out if they want to overtake the South Siders.
Luckily for the Guardians, they did just get back their big bopper, Jose Ramirez, after he spent a good chunk of time on the IL after fracturing his left hamate bone during a swing. An injury that has become quite common across hitters.

Even on Centre Court and the hallowed grass where silence is usually preserved, Arthur Fery refused to go down quietly. The last British hope left standing in the singles and Wimbledon local was not done with his fairytale, kicking and screaming in defiance to win a five-set thriller against fellow wildcard Grigor Dimitrov. Roger Federer looked down from the front row of the Royal Box and grinned in approval at Fery’s fight and at the arrival of a new home hope. The days of five-set epics involving a roaring, snarling Brit are not over following Andy Murray’s retirement, after all.
Instead, the 23-year-old Fery once again scrapped from the brink, battling from a break down in the fourth and prevailing in a match tiebreak to end the resurgence of Dimitrov, the former world No 3, winning 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 7-6 (10-7) in three hours and 55 minutes. It has already been life-changing for the local lad, born to French parents but who grew up five minutes down the road from the gates of the All England Club; the late bloomer who stayed in school and studied at Stanford, patiently waiting for his moment. As the light faded on Centre Court, at 8:21pm on Monday evening, Fery, ranked 114th in the world before the fortnight, gloriously burst through and seized it.
“Where to start,” he said. “I’ve no words right now. I’ll do my best, but it’s incredibly tough to put words to what I’ve just felt on a tennis court, in front of you guys. The support was phenomenal. “I’m not going to swear, that would be a problem, but first time on this court, five sets against an absolute legend of the game... I grew up five minutes from here, I grew up coming to watch matches on this court, we’ve got probably the greatest of all time watching on. Now playing in front of all you guys, and winning, it’s unbelievable.”
For Fery, the biggest match of his life brought a drastic change in surroundings. He could not avoid staying on the intimate bearpit of Court 18 any longer after back-to-back wins over Otto Virtanen and Zizou Bergs. As Fery stood next to Dimitrov beneath the stairs on Centre Court and waited to walk out onto the most famous tennis arena in the world, he could have glanced left and noticed the names of Federer and Murray on the winners’ board. He was bidding to emulate Murray by becoming just the sixth British player to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in the open era. He ended up playing in front of Federer, as the eight-time champion looked down from the front row of the Royal Box in an immaculate blazer.
Fery drew applause and a grin from Federer as he lunged to his left and steered a backhand winner down the line; there is a lot to like about Fery’s game, and the way he, at 5ft 9in, overcomes a lack of height by counter-punching from the baseline and rushing into the net, where his brave approaches were often followed by clever touches and soft volleys. The first two sets came down to a couple of games. Fery stole the first despite Dimitrov winning his first 16

Far below Philadelphia’s City Hall, boarding the subways on their return from the Lincoln Financial Field, were fans with names on their shirts. Those of Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich, the players they hoped to see on 4 July. They had bought their tickets in the hope of a different match. France did not get the game they wanted, either, and not merely because a World Cup win over Germany would have been something to savour.
One with Paraguay was more one to endure than enjoy. There were parties elsewhere in Philadelphia, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This was something different: Nigglefest 2026. It was an exhibition of off-the-ball fouls, collapsing to the turf and scuffing up the penalty spot. It was designed to delay, to provoke.
It was, according to interpretation, either disgraceful, mildly irritating or a justified way of trying to stop a superior opponent. If Sweden could be accused of being too accommodating when they lost to France, the same charge could not be levelled at Paraguay. Every other opponent had conceded at least three times to the tournament favourites. Paraguay only let in one goal, and a penalty at that. But was that due to their underhand tactics or the genuinely excellent defending that surrounded it, but which will garner less attention?
Gustavo Alfaro, the Paraguay coach, said his side “fought like lions”. Some of the tactics were scarcely those **** ociated with the king of the jungle. Officially, though, they fought clean. That Paraguay only committed 13 fouls was laughable; for the first time in 28 years, they completed a World Cup game without getting as much as a booking, which could suggest their behaviour was immaculate. Instead, it said rather more about the frankly bizarre performance of Ilgiz Tantashev, the Uzbek referee, who seemed incapable of recognising Paraguayan wrongdoing.
That said, it was scarcely the battle of Philadelphia and more an extended exercise in s**thousery. There was a pettiness to much of it, a streetwise nature to parts of it. There were offences that stopped short of being deemed violent conduct. There were others designed to induce a violent reaction from France.

On the night of the 2026 NBA Draft, BYU Cougars star AJ Dybantsa won the hearts of basketball fans.
AJ Dybantsa was projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and the Washington Wizards didn’t hesitate in calling his name.
But even prior to taking the stage as the top pick, Dybantsa had already shown a gesture that instantly made him a fan-favorite.
On draft night, many prospects show off their fashion sense with immaculate clothing choices, and Dybantsa did just that with a phenomenal suit.
Speaking of his suit, one thing that caught the eye of fans was a unique TC 5 pin. So, what was the reason behind wearing that? Well, it was to honor the late Terrence Clarke.
