Federal officials acknowledge that President Donald Trump’s planned triumphal arch will unavoidably harm historic sites if built as planned, but they say the project must move forward, according to a National Park Service document and emails obtained by The Washington Post.
Trump’s 250-foot-tall proposed arch would be built in Memorial Circle, a traffic roundabout tucked inside Washington’s boundaries near Arlington National Cemetery. Historic preservationists, veterans groups and others have called on the administration to shrink the monument’s planned size or build it elsewhere, warning that the towering structure would overshadow the cemetery, interrupt the solemn corridor that was intended between the cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, and create other disruptions.
National Park Service officials agree that the arch would adversely affect the cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial and several dozen other historic sites.
The “adverse effects cannot be fully avoided,” Park Service officials wrote in a document circulated Tuesday and obtained by The Washington Post. But, they said, the project cannot be constructed somewhere else because “the proposed location at Memorial Circle is central to the undertaking,” according to the NPS document.
The document is a proposed agreement that the administration wants local historic-preservation officers to sign onto as part of a federally required process to offer feedback on the project.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has agreed to a significant portion of a stringent ethics proposal that is part of broader cryptocurrency legislation headed for a key vote this week, according to three of the bill's main Republican authors.
The sweeping bill initially had just a provision included that would bar all federally elected officials and their spouses, as well as federal judges, from issuing digital ***** ets.
A core group of Democrats, as well as Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said that didn't go far enough to address conflict-of-interest issues they had with Trump's crypto wealth. Their votes would be needed to advance the bill in a key vote this Tuesday.
Tillis and Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., along with several other Democrats, had demanded language that would allow state attorneys general to step in and enforce the law in addition to the Justice Department.
In announcing Trump's agreement, Republican Sens. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Tim Scott of South Carolina and John Boozman of Arkansas said it includes a "meaningful role" for state attorneys general to play in enforcing the crypto measure should it become law.

If you're looking for safe ways to grow your money and protect your savings, a high-yield savings account (HYSA) can be a great option. However, it's important to be aware that there are certain instances when you could lose money. So if you plan on opening a high-yield savings account, be sure you understand how to protect your principal and earned interest.
High-yield savings accounts are like traditional savings accounts except that they offer above-average interest rates. These accounts are available from banks and credit unions, particularly online financial institutions. The higher interest rate means you earn more on your deposited funds over time, allowing your savings to grow faster.
If you open an account with a federally insured financial institution, your savings account deposits are protected in case the institution fails. With banks, deposits are protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) up to $250,000 per institution, per depositor, per ownership category. With credit unions, deposits are similarly insured by the National Credit Union Administration.

Block, Inc. (NYSE:XYZ) is taking another step toward consolidating its digital **** et operations under a federal regulatory framework. On September 8, it filed an application with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to charter Builders Bank & Trust, N.A.
If chartered, the Builders Bank & Trust could become an important part of Block's digital **** et custody infrastructure, giving the company a federally supervised framework for custody and related services involving bitcoin and stablecoins.
Builders Bank & Trust would be an uninsured national trust bank, meaning it would not accept deposits or make traditional loans. Instead, its focus would be on fiduciary and custody services, allowing Block to build specialized infrastructure for safeguarding digital **** ets.
The structure could be particularly valuable as Block, Inc. (NYSE:XYZ) seeks to expand its institutional customer base. A federally supervised custody operation could give larger financial institutions greater confidence in Block's ability to safeguard Bitcoin and other digital **** ets.
Stablecoins represent a potentially important opportunity for Block, particularly through its Cash App ecosystem. A regulated custody infrastructure could eventually support broader stablecoin-related products and payments if Block chooses to expand further in this area.

Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan and co-investors are behind an entity that owns 49% of the holding company created for the planned Trump crypto World Liberty Financial's US banking venture, according to people familiar with the matter, as cited by The Wall Street Journal.
The stake makes Tahnoon-linked investors the largest shareholders in the holding company behind a bank being prepared by the Trump family's cryptocurrency venture.
The reported ownership arrangement follows a $500M investment in World Liberty Financial that Tahnoon backed last year in exchange for a 49% stake in the company, the Journal previously reported. The new venture expands the business relationship between the Trump-backed crypto company and a foreign government official.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency earlier this month granted preliminary conditional approval for World Liberty Financial to launch a federally chartered national trust bank, according to the Journal's Aug. 27 report. The proposed bank would issue, redeem and safeguard USD1, the dollar-backed stablecoin World Liberty launched last year.
The preliminary approval places the proposed bank at the center of World Liberty Financial's stablecoin business. It also focuses on the ownership of the holding company created for the venture, in which Tahnoon and his co-investors are reported to hold the largest stake.

Aug 26 (Reuters) - Taylor Farms, the produce company at the center of a U.S. cyclospora outbreak, frequently failed to submit federally required workplace injury logs in recent years, including for at least four facilities where workers suffered fatal or otherwise serious injuries, a Reuters review of federal records found.
Over the ‌past five years, five to seven Taylor Farms facilities filed the annual report within the following year, with some showing injury rates above industry averages, while others ‌recording below-average rates. From 2021 to 2025, at least 17 facilities required such filings based on the number of employees and nature of the work, according to a review of intermittent U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspection filings.
The figures indicate an overall reporting rate well below the industry average of 78%, based on Reuters calculations of 2023 census numbers and the latest OSHA data. OSHA did not respond to questions about Taylor Farms' lower reporting rate.
Reporting gaps, which Taylor Farms acknowledged to Reuters, make it difficult for the public to ****** s the workplace safety record of the California-based company, according to some workplace safety watchdog groups. OSHA has said, in rulemaking documents, memos and public releases, that electronic submission of these logs allows the agency to focus its enforcement efforts and that it ‌is important for the public to have access to them.

DraftKings' investment in its federally regulated predictions platform will add tens of millions in costs while 2026 guidance ******* umes stable state tax rates.

DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) has had a rough stretch in 2026. Shares are down 26.61% year to date as of Friday's close and 43.22% over the past year, trading at $26.17 against a 52-week high of $48.78. Now, Argus has formalized what the price action has been signaling, cutting the stock to Hold from Buy and removing its price target.
Argus cited high customer acquisition costs, rising state gaming taxes and aggressive competition from prediction markets as the primary drivers of the downgrade. The firm also flagged that DraftKings has been losing market share in U.S. Internet gaming, and cut its estimates accordingly.

On August 13, Brookfield (NYSE:BN) held its second-quarter earnings call, and the story management told was less about property spreadsheets and more about power lines and reactors. Distributable earnings before realizations climbed 15% year over year to $1.4 billion for the quarter, and executives spent much of the call explaining how a $100 billion Kentucky data center project and a nuclear buildout fit into that growth.
Brookfield's pitch centers on a gap between AI's appetite for electricity and the grid's ability to supply it. CEO Bruce Flatt described a $100 billion partnership with the US Department of Energy to build an AI campus in Kentucky on federally owned land, a deal he said requires few approvals because of that federal ownership. Alongside that, the Department of Energy committed a further $17.5 billion to Brookfield and its utility partners to acquire long lead time items for Westinghouse's reactor pipeline, which the company says is now under construction on 14 reactors with visibility into 40 more and another 100 beyond that.
The ****** et management engine backing these bets had its own strong quarter. Fundraising hit a record $77 billion, pushing fee-bearing capital up 19% to $672 billion and fee-related earnings up 20% from a year earlier. The Oaktree acquisition closed in July, and Wealth Solutions distributable earnings rose 23% year over year to $480 million as the newly acquired Just Group added $45 billion of insurance ****** ets. Real estate leasing added another data point: office tenants signed 4.5 million square feet globally at net rents 19% above what was expiring, including leases in Canada priced more than double prior rates.
Flatt opened his remarks by naming the risks directly, pointing to geopolitical conflict, higher energy prices and uncertainty around interest rates as factors shaping the near-term market environment. That acknowledgment sits alongside a Just Group integration that is still a work in progress. Management said it exited an early-stage direct-to-consumer initiative and is still working through reducing the business's cost base, and Just contributed just $29 million of earnings in its first quarter under Brookfield ownership, a starting return on equity of about 12%.
Capital return also raises questions for income-focused shareholders. The board declared a quarterly dividend of only $0.07 per share, while the company spent roughly $580 million on buybacks year to date at an average price of $42, showing where management prefers to direct spare cash. Separately, the approved simplification of Brookfield's capital structure requires taxable Canadian and UK shareholders to actively file an election if they want a tax-deferred share exchange, an administrative step that falls on investors rather than the company. Management also acknowledged the annuity business operates in a competitive market, even as it held spreads above 200 basis points.

NEA delivers a 7.14% federally tax-free yield, which is double MUB's 3.52%, and posted a 12% price return over the past year.
NEA slashed its distribution nearly in half during 2022-2023 rate hikes and now trades at a NAV premium, eliminating the traditional CEF discount cushion.
Don't wait: the **** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just revealed his top 10 AI stocks. See the full list FREE now.
Investors who bought the iShares National Muni Bond ETF (NYSEARCA:MUB) did so for a good reason: it is the cheapest, most liquid way to own a diversified basket of federally tax-free municipal bonds. With a 0.05% expense ratio and $45.4 billion in **** ets, MUB has become the default core holding for taxable brokerage accounts. The problem is the payout. MUB's 30-day SEC yield of 3.52% as of August 13, 2026 looks thin against a 10-year Treasury at 4.63%, and even thinner for anyone trying to live on the income. A specific municipal fund pays more than double that rate, with the same AMT-free federal exemption, and Wall Street is only now re-rating it.
Roughly 5,900 investment-grade munis make up the portfolio at MUB, held with no leverage and no active security selection. That structure keeps the fee at a rounding error, though it also caps income near the underlying bond coupons. A retiree in the 32% federal bracket with $100,000 in MUB collects about $3,520 a year in tax-free interest. The taxable-equivalent yield is roughly 5.18%, which is respectable but leaves real purchasing power close to flat once inflation is deducted. For an investor whose entire reason for holding munis is tax-free monthly income, MUB is doing the job at half speed.

World Liberty Financial (CRYPTO: $WLFI) has moved closer to bringing its USD1 (CRYPTO: $USD1) stablecoin under a federally supervised banking structure after the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency conditionally approved a national trust bank charter for World Liberty Trust Company.
The approval would allow the Trump family-backed crypto company to issue USD1 directly and custody the U.S. dollar ****** ets backing the stablecoin. Those functions are currently handled through BitGo (NASDAQ: $BTGO).
Unlike a traditional commercial bank charter, the national trust structure generally does not permit deposit-taking or lending. It would instead give World Liberty a single federal framework for custody, ****** et servicing and settlement, areas the company has said are central to its plans for institutional clients such as exchanges and investment firms.

Cannabis is having a moment. Americans now reach for weed daily more often than they reach for a drink, and THC seltzers sit on shelves at Total Wine and Target like they belong there. RYTHM, the Nasdaq-listed holding company behind a stack of those brands, just had a very nice quarter on the bet that the shelf ****** e is permanent. Congress has other ideas.
RYTHM surged 23% Tuesday after a strong second-quarter print and a possible federal reprieve on the hemp-derived THC ban set to take effect in November. The company posted $1.2 million in net income on $23 million in revenue, up 73% from the prior quarter. The stock is up about 56% over the last 6 months.
The consumer has spoken, and the consumer wants easy access to THC. Daily cannabis use now outpaces daily drinking, per new federal survey data. Many lawmakers, especially Republicans, think they know better.
Let's do some clarity: THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, which remains federally illegal in the U.S., though the DEA just wrapped hearings weighing whether to move recreational cannabis from the most restrictive Schedule I to the far less restrictive Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized THC derived from "hemp," a category Congress invented in statute with no grounding in chemistry. That let products like THC seltzers and gummies flourish in bodegas and grocery stores near you. It's effectively the same product as state-legal dispensary weed with a different retail channel.

Moving from California to Nevada eliminates the 9.3% state income tax on RMDs, saving six figures over 20 years on a $2.1 million IRA.
Nevada residency doesn't fix federal exposure: IRMAA surcharges kick in above $109,000 MAGI, and up to 85% of Social Security stays federally taxable.
A Qualified Charitable Distribution of up to $111,000 in 2026 can satisfy the entire first RMD and keep it out of AGI completely.
Two retirees, same $1 million, same 4% rule, buy one finished with $1.4 million, the other hit $0 in 12 years. Our free reader guide explains the flaw that separated them, and the income-first method built to avoid it.
A recent post on r/personalfinance describes exactly this move: a father who rolled a large 401(k) into a traditional IRA at 72, then relocated from California to Nevada for what the poster called "a 9.3% instant savings once RMD hits." The specifics fit a common profile: a $2.1 million balance, a first required minimum distribution one year away, and a California tax bill that grows every year the account does. The math on why the U-Haul is worth it, and the federal trap the move does not solve, is more interesting than the headline.

In recent years, deposit rates as high as 7% APY made a savings account look like a better investment than the stock market. But those rates have largely become a thing of the past.
Today, the best high-yield savings accounts offer as much as 4% APY. Alternatively, some credit unions offer 7% on checking accounts, but these accounts are rare and the terms and conditions can be complex.
So, why don't 7% savings accounts exist anymore — and how can you earn as much interest as possible on your savings? Read on to learn more.
Currently, no banks are offering 7% APY on savings accounts. If you're looking for the highest returns on federally insured deposit accounts, the best available rates are generally in the 3% to 4% APY range for high-yield savings accounts (HYSAs), certificates of deposit (CDs), and money market accounts (MMAs).

High-yield municipal bonds combine higher income with tax advantages: Their federally tax-exempt income can produce tax-equivalent yields that rival many taxable high-yield corporate bond funds.
HYMU and HYD take different approaches: HYMU emphasizes active management and higher yields, while HYD prioritizes somewhat stronger credit quality, lower duration, and passive index tracking.
Pay attention to credit quality and duration, not just yield: Lower-rated issuers increase credit risk, while longer-duration portfolios are more sensitive to interest rate changes, making both important considerations before investing.
Don't wait: the ***** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just revealed his top 10 AI stocks. See the full list FREE now.
I'm generally not a fan of high-yield corporate bond ETFs for retirees, and it has very little to do with credit risk. My bigger concern is taxes. Unless you hold them inside a tax-advantaged account such as a Roth IRA, the interest they generate is typically taxed as ordinary income at the federal level and, in many cases, at the state and local levels as well.

Kalshi is in talks to raise fresh capital at a $40Bn valuation, according to a Financial Times report, nearly double the $22Bn price tag attached to its Series F round just weeks earlier in May 2026.
That $40Bn figure is nearly triple the $15Bn that rival Polymarket is reportedly targeting. The central tension this story forces onto the table is that a valuation that has moved roughly 20x in twelve months deserves more scrutiny than a funding press release typically gets.
The ongoing regulatory scrutiny of prediction markets is dominating the discussion around the Kalshi IPO, and until the situation is resolved, it is unlikely to become a publicly traded company.
Kalshi is not a crypto exchange or a sportsbook. It is a federally regulated event-contracts exchange, operating under the oversight of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Think of it as a stock exchange, except instead of shares in Apple, users trade binary contracts on the probability of real-world outcomes: whether the Federal Reserve raises rates, which party wins a Senate seat, or who advances in a tournament bracket.

MMAs and HYSAs track the same Treasury-driven yields, but the real differentiator is whether you need to write checks directly from the account.
Only 46% of adults have three months of emergency expenses saved, and a HYSA's required transfer step helps keep that fund untouched.
Promotional rates and tiered yields mean the advertised number may not reflect what your balance actually earns six months after opening.
A high-yield savings account (HYSA) is the close cousin of a money market account (MMA). They are both federally insured deposit accounts available through banks or credit unions, paying significantly higher interest than regular checking or savings accounts. The differences lie in how you access the money and how the interest rate is structured. I've spent my career studying personal finance and helping readers choose the best credit cards, mortgages, and high-yield savings accounts. I've even led a dedicated team whose entire job was to rank those accounts for our users. So, although HYSAs and MMAs may be similar, there are some distinct differences you should know before deciding where to deposit your money.

Sugar Grove, North Carolina — Year after year, Ross and Rebecca Tobiassen saw their healthcare costs rise, having relied on the Affordable Care Act for federally subsidized health insurance since its start in 2014. Year after year, the couple in western North Carolina kept their coverage, believing the peace of mind was worth the cost.
But in December, that changed. The Tobiassens decided to cancel their insurance when Rebecca saw the cost of their monthly premiums would jump from $130 to more than $550.
"It makes no sense," she said. "It's not worth it anymore."
The couple own and are the only employees of a small auto shop just west of Appalachian State University in the North Carolina mountains. Rebecca worries about her husband, whose work as a mechanic can be dangerous. A spring once shot a metal ball joint into their garage wall like a gun. A heavy object crushed Ross' thumb. In 2020, Ross became mostly blind in one eye after repeatedly getting metal shards in it and developing an infection in his cornea.
The Tobiassens are among the Americans who canceled their ACA coverage after Congress allowed enhanced tax credits that helped pay for insurance plans to expire at the end of 2025. The Tobiassens benefited from those tax credits — like millions of other enrollees expected to drop or be dropped from their coverage as the year progresses, unable to keep up with the higher costs.
