Kate Douglass continued her ****** ault on the 50m freestyle world record on Saturday, clocking a stunning 23.19sec to win Pan Pacific Championships gold with her second world mark of the day.
The American sliced three-tenths of a second off the world record of 23.49sec she set hours earlier in the heats in Irvine, California.
That broke the world record of 23.55sec set by fellow American Gretchen Walsh on June 28 in Rome -- where Walsh broke the world mark that Douglass had set on June 19.
Douglass finished a whopping 55-hundredths of a second ahead of Walsh, who took silver in 23.74sec. Australia's reigning world champion Meg Harris was third in 23.89.
Douglass returned less than half an hour later to claim silver in the 200m ****** troke won by Canadian Alexanne LePage in 2:21.73.

Liebmann, 19, knocked nearly four seconds off the men's 1500m freestyle record as he claimed his first international gold medal at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris.
He completed the distance in 14 minutes 26.79 seconds - 3.88secs faster than the previous record which was set by American Bobby Finke at the 2024 Olympics, also held in the French capital.
Liebmann became the first swimmer to go under 14:30 for the distance as he slashed the most time off the record since Australia's Grant Hackett in 2001.
Three-time Olympic champion Hackett took more than seven seconds off when he swam 14:34.56 - a record which stood for 10 years.

With the race's promoter, Green Savoree Racing Promotions, being behind on preparation for the new street course in Markham, all on-track activities were placed on hold Friday before being eventually postponed to Saturday. This is the first year that the series is racing at the 12-turn, 2.19-mile street course after racing at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto for 37 of the last 40 years.
"IndyCar is incredibly disappointed that our promoter was not able to complete the track build on time, despite significant support from our team on site," IndyCar president Doug Boles said in a news release. "Ontario has always been a magnificent market for our sport and the number of spectators that attended today is a shining example of that. New events can always pose logistical challenges and we join in the frustration of our loyal fans and apologize.
"Once we hit the track, we believe the circuit will be spectacular. We would like to thank the city of Markham for the major support it has made to provide IndyCar a layout, which is fast, technical and will put on a terrific show on Sunday."

The three support series in attendance – USF 2000, USF Pro 2000 and NASCAR Canada – completed their practice sessions Saturday morning before Indy cars got on track. Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske and Simone Manuel combined to swim 3:29.32, an American record and the third-fastest time in history.
Douglass' leadoff time — 51.69 seconds — was also an American record and one hundredth off Dutchwoman Marrit Steenbergen's world record.
The U.S. last beat Australia in a women's 4x100m free at the 2017 World Championships. Australia won the last four Olympic ***** les, plus four of the last five world ***** les.

In what could have been a great opening day for IndyCar on the streets of Markham, Ontario turned into bitter disappointment for the huge throng of fans in the grandstands and for IndyCar President Doug Boles.
Instead of racing action, the only wheels turned on the 2.19-mile, 12-turn road course was construction machinery still trying to complete the track build. Without enough key tire packs in place to make for a safe impact area, IndyCar officials cancelled all track activity on Friday and issued a revised schedule for Saturday.
That left Boles furious that the track was not ready in time by the promoter of this weekend's event, and a key, longtime IndyCar ally, Green Savoree Promotions.
"IndyCar is incredibly disappointed that our promoter was not able to complete the track build on time, despite significant support from our team on site," Boles said. "Ontario has always been a magnificent market for our sport and the number of spectators that attended today is a shining example of that. LANDOVER, Md. — The Miami Dolphins played their starters in their preseason opener, and the first-team offense found the end zone.
Starting quarterback Malik Willis and running back De'Von Achane combined to orchestrate a 14-play, 93 yard touchdown drive while rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas made a highlight-reel catch during the initial series in the Dolphins' exhibition against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium.
Willis was 4 of 5 for 43 yards against the Washington second-team defense. Achane had seven carries for 39 yards and punched in a 1-yard touchdown behind the starting left side of the Miami offensive line.
Douglas hauled in a 28-yard pass from Willis with one hand as he fought through pass interference from the Commanders' Antonio Hamilton Sr. Willis' lone incompletion went to Douglas, who was open with ***** e in front of the sideline but stuck his left foot out too far and was out of bounds. Willis' other three completions went to third-year slot receiver Malik Washington.
The Dolphins started the series backed up at their own 7-yard line because running back Jaylen Wright ***** ed the opening kickoff and linebacker Tyrel Dodson was called for a hold.

DETROIT — A blister affected Chicago White Sox starter Davis Martin in Thursday's outing that ended with an ejection.
A day later, the right-hander landed on the 15-day injured list with the blister on his right middle finger.
"We decided that there's a good chunk of skin gone, how that's going to affect me throwing the baseball?" Martin said Friday afternoon. "A lot of questions popped up where it made sense to put me on the IL and get it taken care of."
Martin's IL stint was one of several moves announced by the American League Central-leading Sox ahead of a big three-game series against the second-place Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. The Sox brought up pitchers José Urquidy and Tyler Schweitzer from Triple-A Charlotte and optioned right-hander Tanner McDougal to Charlotte.

MARKHAM, Ontario – IndyCar's first weekend on the streets of Markham has gotten off to a disastrous start, with the series having to call off its Friday practice session for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham.
On Thursday, it became clear to those in the paddock that the race's promoter, Green Savoree Racing Promotions, was well behind on its preparation for the new street race on the 12-turn, 2.19-mile track. Despite the series reiterating its intentions to race Thursday evening and throughout the day Friday, Green Savoree Racing Promotions never got the track to a place that met the regulations of the FIA and IndyCar's competition team.
IndyCar's first open gate day in Markham collapsed as each hour passed, and no race cars made it on track. Throughout the day, spectators – who had free admission to Friday's (lack of) activities – were left mainly in the dark about postponements and eventual cancellations that took place. Green Savoree Racing Promotions failed to give consistent public address updates on changes to the schedule, even to the point of having teams pack cars back into transporters and drivers leaving the track before IndyCar made the postponement public.
Mishaps at new street circuits are bound to happen. The most recent example being in 2021, when grandstands were still being built the morning of the inaugural Music City Grand Prix in downtown Nashville. But Green Savoree Racing Promotions – which also manages the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Grand Prix of Portland – was unprepared for Friday to a level that is somewhat embarrassing for the promoter and the series that partners with it for multiple events per year.

League action is back!
The Royals narrowly went through to the second round of the Carabao Cup last Saturday, beating Bromley on penalties. It was Joel Pereira that had the last laugh in that game, saving Ethon Archer's penalty, but plaudits should go to Kyreece Lisbie, who had a great game.
Lewis Wing missed a penalty but the captain settled that by kicking off the scoring in the shootout. It will be Stevenage that Reading play in the next round (which I predicted), so we will be able to focus on the league at least.
Luton Town beat Gillingham 3-0 in the cup, with their campaign getting off to a smoother start than the Royals'. Goals by Nahki Wells, Bennadict Benagr and Giddeon Kouda sealed the deal for the Hatters, who face Chelsea in the next round. So it is likely Luton will also be focusing on the league, but these games are never predictable.
We finally hit matchday one of League One, with Reading vs Luton kicking off at 12:30 on Saturday. It will be available on Sky Sports and will be played at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, which has a capacity of 24,161. The referee to take us into league action will be Leigh Doughty.

ARDMORE, Pa. – Having just finished 36 holes of stroke play at this 126th U.S. Amateur in 2 over par, Luke Poulter walked out of the scoring tent behind Merion's 18th hole on Tuesday afternoon and exclaimed, "I'm going to need a miracle."
His caddie has seen miracles around this place before.
Florida head coach J.C. Deacon, who is on the bag for his star rising senior, reached the semifinals of the 2005 U.S. Amateur at Merion before his opponent, Dillon Dougherty, won each of the last two holes with improbable shots that still get Deacon emotional thinking about them.
"I went from winning and playing in the Masters to it being over just like that," Deacon said.
Trailing Deacon 1 down with two holes to play, Dougherty missed the green left at the par-3 17th, prompting Deacon to say to himself on the long walk down to the green, I'm going to the Masters. But Dougherty then chipped in for birdie to win the hole and tie the match. On the next hole, the par-4 18th, Dougherty hit the broadcast booth with his approach and faced a 50-yard shot from a nasty lie. But again, Dougherty produced some magic, hitting a full flop that clanked off the flagstick to stone dead.

The Miami Dolphins have the day off on Tuesday, as they travel up the East Coast ahead of their joint practice session and preseason meeting with the Washington Commanders later in the week.
With that, the Dolphins released their first unofficial depth chart since Jeff Hafley took over for Mike McDaniel as the team's head coach earlier this offseason.
There are several interesting points about this first depth chart, even though it's unofficial.
Tight end Ben Sims is listed a hybric fullback, which would make it less likely that DJ Herman cracks the 53-man roster if they can have one player fill multiple spots.
Third-round pick Caleb Douglas is listed with the starters. He's earned it through the first two weeks of camp, but it's good to see him get that recognition.

Over a month before the regular season opener in Minneapolis, the Green Bay Packers know who will be under center and starting at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings come Week 1.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Vikings are naming former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray as the team's starter entering the 2026 season -- beating out 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy.
Another layer of intrigue: Murray, the first overall pick in the 2019 draft and a two-time Pro Bowler, played the last three seasons in Arizona under coach Jonathan Gannon, who is now the Packers defensive coordinator.
Released by the Cardinals, Murray signed a one-year deal with the Vikings, hoping a stop in Minneapolis can help revive his NFL career.
Murray, 29, has started two games in his career against the Packers, losing both. He was intercepted in the end zone by Rasul Douglas to end a 24-21 win for the Packers in 2021, and he led the Cardinals to only 13 points in a 21-point defeat at Lambeau Field in 2024. Murray did not play in Arizona's loss to the Packers last season.

There are at least seven viable options at the position for the team to keep around.
A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs are expected to be the top two players on the depth chart. If Kayshon Boutte hasn't been traded, he's arguably still the team's best deep-threat option. DeMario Douglas has worked with the starters as the top slot option, while Mack Hollins is the best blocking wide receiver and another viable deep threat. Efton Chism III is a rapidly improving slot option, and Kyle Williams is a 2025 third-round draft pick with blistering speed.
If it came down to it, Vrabel was asked if he would consider keeping all seven receivers on the roster.

Lane Johnson's announcement Saturday that this probably will be his last NFL season brought up more than a few memories.
His has been quite a journey — from junior college quarterback to best right tackle in Eagles history, with two Super Bowl rings. Johnson is a certainty for the franchise's Hall of Fame, and I think he ought to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well, as the best right tackle of his era. (His remarks about the deficiencies of "expert rankings" Saturday were very much on point.)
The sharpest memory that came to mind, though, was of a day exactly 10 years ago, when I emerged from a brief phone conversation with Johnson wondering if his career was going to be one of those "what might have been" stories.
It was August 9, 2016, and my training camp focus was on the new rookie quarterback, Carson Wentz, along with the new head coach, Doug Pederson. Then came a report that Johnson, who had served a four-game NFL suspension in 2014 for what was said to be unapproved Adderall usage, had flunked another drug test. That would mean a 10-game NFL suspension, and more ominously, it would put him on the path to a career-killing 2-year ban, should there be a third such instance.
I called him – I'm pretty sure I was the first reporter to reach him after the news broke – and he initially denied any knowledge of a failed test. Within hours, he'd walked that back. I won't go through the whole history of the next several weeks, but the suspension wasn't announced right away, and then Johnson appealed it. Finally, the appeal was denied, as almost all NFL appeals are, and he started serving the suspension, four games into the season.

Drew Brees stood on stage next to his bronze bust, in front of Who Dat Nation, and took his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Getting benched three times in the NFL helped him get there.
"Marty Schottenheimer, one of the greatest coaches and motivators to ever coach this game and who belongs here in Canton," Brees said Saturday. "Marty was my biggest fan. He would tell me all the time, even as he benched me three times and made me fight for my job every year with two greats, Doug Flutie and Philip Rivers.
"The first two times I got benched, I deserved it. The third time, I still don't think I deserved it, Coach. But nonetheless, it lit more than a fire. It forced me to access a place in my mind and heart that I had not yet been. The adversity was not expected, but very necessary. I would never have reached the heights I did without it. I knew I needed to play better, but more importantly, I knew he believed I would play better."
Brees eventually left the San Diego Chargers and joined the New Orleans Saints, where he won a Super Bowl playing for coach Sean Payton and became one of the most prolific passers in NFL history, to the delight of fans who filled the Superdome with chants of "Who dat?"

CHICAGO (AP) — The struggling Chicago White Sox optioned rookie left-hander Noah Schultz and rookie right-hander David Sandlin to Triple-A Charlotte, and recalled highly regarded prospects Hagen Smith and Tanner McDougal before Saturday's game against Cleveland.
The White Sox, who have lost four in a row and five of their last six, entered Saturday at 59-56, in first place in the AL Central.
The 23-year-old Schultz left Friday's 8-2 loss to the Guardians after getting just one out and allowing two runs on three hits. He was relieved by Sandlin, who closed out the first, then tossed three scoreless innings before allowing five runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Schultz made 14 starts but struggled with consistency. He's 3-9 with a 6.60 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings.
Manager Will Venable said he made a mistake on Friday when he went to to mound in the first after pitching coach Zach Bove had already visited Schultz earlier in the inning. That forced the White Sox to bring in Sandlin earlier than wanted for a 5 1/3-inning outing.

In a bit of top pitching prospect musical chairs, word broke early Saturday morning that Hagen Smith and Tanner McDougal were getting the call to the South Side, with fellow rookies Noah Schultz and David Sandlin heading down to Charlotte.
White Sox sources confirmed the news to multiple outlets, with Future Sox first getting the news out.
While not the impetus for the moves, they couldn't come at a better time for a depleted White Sox bullpen, whose fatigue was further exacerbated on Friday night when manager Will Venable missed Zach Bove's mound visit four batters into the game and trotted out to chat with Schultz after a two-run single, forcing the lefthander's early exit. Despite throwing just 23 pitches, Schultz is burned for the next four days, and Sandlin had thrown just 18 ⅓ innings since June 26 while battling minor injury (he tossed 96 on Friday night in emergency relief of Schultz).
Smith, the No. 2 prospect in the White Sox system per MLB, and McDougal (No. 4), both are starting pitchers but have taken on reduced workloads in 2026 due to injuries.
Smith struggled through a shoulder impingement that sidelined him from mid-June to mid-July, but holds a 1.43 ERA in six games out of the Knights pen since his return.

Aug. 8—There are several moments and events that seem to indicate the official start of the college basketball season. One of those in Champaign is the annual Basketball Tip-Off Event hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Champaign-Urbana, which is now in its 102nd iteration.
This year's event is in exactly one month — Tuesday, Sept. 8 — at the iHotel and Conference Center. Like in years past, the C-U community will get a chance to meet the current crop of Illinois basketball players, including several who helped the Illini reach the Final Four last season.

Proceeds will go to Kiwanis of Champaign-Urbana to help with the club's philanthropic, youth-focused community activities. Those include sponsorship of the C-U Kiwanis Little League, Camp Kiwanis Girl Scout Camp, the C-U Kiwanis Tom Jones Challenger League, Little Free Libraries and the Kendall Gill Golf Outing in support of Cunningham Children's Home.
Doors will open for this year's event at 4:45 p.m., with a 5 p.m. ***** tail social hour and hors d'oeuvres followed by dinner and dessert and the program featuring Illinois coach Brad Underwood. Underwood will preview the 2026-27 season and introduce all of the players.
