OSLO, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Norwegian authorities have seized a Russian cruise ship in the Arctic on behalf of Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz, which is seeking to enforce a $4.22 billion compensation award for ******* ets that Moscow took when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
Officials said the vessel, the Professor Molchanov, was seized late on Wednesday in Barentsburg, a coal mining settlement that Russia operates on the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard under the terms of a 1920 treaty.
Russia called the arrest of the ship an act of piracy and said it had summoned the Norwegian ambassador to deliver a strong protest. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it would work to secure the vessel's release.

Big league rosters have officially expanded now that we've reached the month of August. The Cincinnati Reds responded in kind by promoting both Brandon Williamson and Juan Brito earlier on Tuesday, the latter providing depth across the infield as the Reds face something of a short-term crisis there.
Ke'Bryan Hayes resides on the 10-day IL at the moment. Superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz has a quad strain, and given how much his leg problems sapped his overall production last season the Reds are going to keep him at DH for the foreseeable future until he's absolutely 100%. That means Matt McLain has moved from 2B over to SS, and to compound things Eugenio Suarez has been absent from team activities the last few days as he works towards gaining US citizenship.
So, the Reds need some infield depth. Edwin Arroyo was recalled to help bridge that gap, and Brito will, too, but that only serves to thin the mix at AAA behind them. Cincinnati responded to that cascade of infield inputs on Tuesday evening by signing veteran infielder Orlando Arcia to a minor league deal.
Arcia, 32, began the 2026 season with in the Minnesota Twins organization and hit .271/.300/.354 with them across 50 PA before being released in late July. He posted an .834 OPS with Minnesota's AAA affiliate in St. Paul along the way, but ended up playing in the Mexican League for a trio of games before the Reds scooped him up.
He was an All Star with Atlanta in 2023 and is a veteran of over 1000 big league games, so he'll certainly provide a stable floor of depth across the middle infield even if the Reds are a) going nowhere this season and b) decide to slow the roll of Elly and others as the final month of the season dwindles down. That said, he owns just a career 76 OPS+, so one can hardly expect him to be lightning in a bottle for the club at this time.

The draft guidance, reviewed by Reuters, is the first detailed look at how the State Department could enforce Trump's August 6 executive order targeting what it calls "birth tourism" and broadening historical exceptions to birthright citizenship.
The White House referred Reuters questions to the State Department. In a statement, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said that "President Trump has been unequivocal that this Administration will protect the meaning and value of American citizenship, full stop, and that includes making sure our passport adjudication process fully reflects that standard."

Citizens is heading into Salesforce Inc. (NYSE:CRM)'s fiscal second-quarter 2027 print with a bullish view. The firm reiterated a Market Outperform rating on the stock with a $315.00 price target, citing positive industry checks. As per the firm, 50% of checks came positive in Q2 compared to 22% in the first quarter of fiscal 2027.

A federal judge who blocked the most controversial aspect of President Donald Trump's executive order aimed at restricting mail-in ballots -- namely, employing the Postal Service as the primary enforcer of mail-voter eligibility -- has now lifted that decision following the Supreme Court's ruling Monday that legal challenges are premature.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a new proposed rule for H-1B visas on Monday that would charge a $103,265 fee for all workers seeking to gain employment in the U.S. who are subject to the annual statutory cap.
Notice of the proposed rule says the fee would be used for the federal government's costs of administering the lawful immigration system, including activities carried out by the DHS and the departments of Justice, State and Labor.
"The proposed H‑1B fee is intended to recover the costs incurred across the federal government to adjudicate, vet, and support lawful immigration programs that otherwise must be funded by taxpayers," U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services spokesperson Zach Kahler said in a release.
The move follows a federal judge's decision in June to strike down the Trump administration's previously proposed $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applications.
U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin ruled that it was unlawful to implement a tax on visa applications, as Congress is the only legislative body with the authority to set immigration policy and taxes.

WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Republican and Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday called on the Trump administration to bar American citizens and businesses from supporting Chinese and Russian civilian intelligence and security agencies.
Congress approved a law in 2018 banning Americans from providing support to foreign military intelligence agencies but leaving the door open to such aid for similar civilian-led organizations. Aug 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday lifted a judicial decision blocking President Donald Trump's administration from implementing his executive order to restrict the use of mail-in ballots ahead of the November midterm elections that will decide control of Congress - though another remains.
The justices granted a Justice Department emergency request to put on hold an injunction that Boston-based U.S. Judge Indira Talwani's imposed in June preventing the Republican president from proceeding with his directive in a coalition of 23 mostly Democratic-governed states and Washington, D.C. that had sued to stop it.
The court has a 6-3 conservative majority. The three liberal justices dissented from the decision.
The Supreme Court's action leaves open the door to the states suing again in the coming months as the midterm contest approaches.
Trump's executive order, issued in March, directed the Department of Homeland Security to compile and transmit to the states a list of U.S. citizens eligible to vote in each state, and the Justice Department to prioritize investigating and prosecuting state and local election officials who issue ballots to people deemed "not eligible" to vote in federal elections.

Half of Americans say President Trump's mass deportation campaign is too aggressive, according to a new poll released Wednesday, as Republicans look to regain voters' confidence on immigration less than 90 days away from the midterm election.
Nearly a quarter of voters who backed Trump in the 2024 presidential election also said his immigration enforcement approach is too aggressive, according to the Politico poll, which was conducted with Public First. It found that 50 percent of Americans overall said the administration's immigration agenda has gone too far.
While the administration has made some changes to its enforcement strategy, the polling has remained largely unchanged since earlier surveys in January and April — amid the height of the immigration crackdown in Minnesota, where federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens.
"Voters really did want border security, but they did not want to see abuelita taken away because she's been here for 40 years but without documentation," Arizona-based GOP strategist Barrett Marson told Politico.
The divide was sharper among Trump's supporters. Thirty-one percent of Trump voters who did not identify with the MAGA movement said his immigration agenda was too aggressive, compared with 15 percent of self-identified MAGA voters.
