League action is back!
The Royals narrowly went through to the second round of the Carabao Cup last Saturday, beating Bromley on penalties. It was Joel Pereira that had the last laugh in that game, saving Ethon Archer's penalty, but plaudits should go to Kyreece Lisbie, who had a great game.
Lewis Wing missed a penalty but the captain settled that by kicking off the scoring in the shootout. It will be Stevenage that Reading play in the next round (which I predicted), so we will be able to focus on the league at least.
Luton Town beat Gillingham 3-0 in the cup, with their campaign getting off to a smoother start than the Royals'. Goals by Nahki Wells, Bennadict Benagr and Giddeon Kouda sealed the deal for the Hatters, who face Chelsea in the next round. So it is likely Luton will also be focusing on the league, but these games are never predictable.
We finally hit matchday one of League One, with Reading vs Luton kicking off at 12:30 on Saturday. It will be available on Sky Sports and will be played at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, which has a capacity of 24,161. The referee to take us into league action will be Leigh Doughty.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Football teams often have to deal with sudden change, but perhaps the change was even more sudden for special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs.
The former Ohio State defensive coordinator was the final hire by former head coach Sherrone Moore, having ousted JB Brown at the end of the season. Coombs was in Ann Arbor for just a few days before Moore, himself, was out. Thus, his head was somewhat spinning, as he got a new job and then suddenly, the person who hired him was gone.
On Thursday, Coombs recalled the tumultuous December and how he found himself wearing maize and blue.
"It's quite a story," Coombs said. "There's a great book in there somewhere. I got hired, officially hired, on Saturday. Coach asked me if I could be up here on Sunday, which I packed my boxes and came on up and said we've got practice on Monday. We did. That was our first bowl practice. Coach was sitting in the front row. We started with a special teams meeting. I was installing things. We practiced the first day. Same thing for the second day. Then the third day, Coach got up in the middle of the meeting and left. Then we ended up having a full meeting after that. We were notified that there was going to be a change made.
"For me, I give Biff and those guys that were here a lot of credit for holding things together. They embraced me. I knew some guys in the building because the guys were here, like Dave and Phil Bromley. Those guys were here when I was bringing my high school team up here years and years ago. I knew some people. Tony is the only guy I knew on the staff. It was an incredible month. My wife would tell you that. I couldn't be more excited to have survived that and be here right now."

Seven academy players have been taken on Chelsea's pre-season tour - and they will all be looking to impress new boss Xabi Alonso.
The Blues are travelling to Australia with a 26-man squad, and are facing Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham.
Almost all of the academy players have been training with the first team throughout Alonso's first two weeks in charge, featuring in behind-closed-doors friendly wins against Crawley Town and Bromley.
However, they could return to London during the Asian leg of the tour if the players involved at the World Cup rejoin the squad.
Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli is one of the young players hoping to make an impact and break into a star-studded - perhaps oversized - Chelsea squad.

Crawley Town have signed defensive midfielder Klaudio Krasniqi on a one-year deal with an option for an extra year.
The 25-year-old completed a successful trial period with the Red Devils this summer, playing in two behind-closed-doors friendlies.
He came through Bromley's academy before featuring in non-league for Erith & Belvedere, Phoenix Sports and FC Kent United.
Krasniqi moved to play in the Gibraltar Football League with Bruno's Magpies in 2025, representing the club in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
He then joined fellow Gibraltan side Glacis United, before leaving in June 2026.

Plans to transform and regenerate the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, which had become a "boarded-up relic of the past", have been approved by Bromley Council.
The centre, which first opened in 1964, will undergo a £130m overhaul, including a full refurbishment and upgrade of the Grade II*-listed hub.
Liam Conlon, Labour MP for Beckenham and Penge, also wishes to bring the Diamond League track and field series back to Crystal Palace and expand para-sport provision at the site.
He said it was a massive moment for south London and described it as "the spiritual home of UK athletics, with 28 world records set here, and household names like Usain Bolt and Mo Farah having raced here".
The Diamond League left Crystal Palace in 2012 and the main 50-metre pool closed in 2020.

Krauhaus could debut in Tuesday's Premier Sports Cup match against Ayr United at the Falkirk Stadium. Falkirk opened Group G with a 5-0 win at Edinburgh City on Saturday.
"Ben Krauhaus is an attacking midfielder who was brought to our attention by Brentford," McGlynn told Falkirk media.

The move to Falkirk means Krauhaus links up with former Brentford B forward Ethan Laidlaw, who completed a permanent transfer to the Scottish club earlier this summer following a standout campaign in west London when he contributed 15 goals and 10 ****** ists for the B team.
Falkirk finished sixth in the Scottish Premiership last season.
Speaking on the loan move, B-team head coach Sam Saunders said: "Ben's season at Bromley was successful, and to come away from it with a League Two ****** le and promotion to League One is a brilliant achievement. Now he gets the chance to test himself in a different environment, in a different country, against difficult teams.
"He'll have Ethan out there with him too, which will help him settle in quickly. We think this is a really exciting opportunity for Ben to keep developing as a men's football regular in a good team, and we wish him all the best at Falkirk."
Krauhaus originally joined Brentford from Bromley in January 2024, immediately returning to the Ravens on loan for the remainder of that season, where he helped the club secure promotion into the Football League for the first time in its history, featuring 43 times in all competitions.
