On August 25, The Marzetti Company (NASDAQ:MZTI) closed out a fiscal year of records, even as reported quarterly sales slipped 2.2% to $465.0 million. The drop traces to the planned expiration of a temporary supply agreement rather than any softness in the core business, and once that noise is stripped out, adjusted sales actually grew. Behind the headline number sits a company generating more cash and profit than it ever has, just as a fresh food safety scare threatens to interrupt the streak.
Fiscal 2026 marked the fourth straight year of record net sales and gross profit and the third straight year of record operating income, with fourth-quarter gross profit alone reaching $114.0 million. Gross margin expanded 220 basis points to 24.5%, the twelfth consecutive quarter of improvement, as procurement, manufacturing and network changes kept squeezing out costs. Adjusted operating income rose 17.5% to $52.2 million. Growth is increasingly coming from newer names. Bachan's, the barbecue sauce brand acquired mid-year, added $15.4 million in sales in its first two months and contributed 320 basis points to consolidated growth. Scanner data showed Bachan's sales up 8.7% for the quarter with distribution points up 16.6%, and household penetration climbing from 5% to 6% since the deal closed.
Management is now extending the brand into mayo, a category it pegs at $3.4 billion in potential, and into a wing sauce made at its own Kentucky plant. Texas Roadhouse dinner rolls kept up an even faster pace, up 28.1% in the quarter and 76% for the year to $58 million, selling nearly twice as fast per distribution point as the category average. New York Bakery grew 2.8% and took 220 basis points of share to a leading 45.5%, while branded croutons picked up another 100 basis points. Record operating cash flow of $283.8 million helped fund $36.3 million in buybacks and a 63rd straight annual dividend increase.
That momentum is about to run into a real headwind. A Cyclospora outbreak is expected to cut fiscal first-quarter net sales by roughly 250 basis points in both the retail and foodservice segments, and management is modeling the recovery on a similar 2018 episode that took about four months to fade. CFO Tom Pigott was blunt about the near-term cost, saying the company does "not expect to be able to grow our margins" in the first quarter, and Marzetti is guiding to a roughly 15% decline in first-quarter operating income.

Hamburg have officially completed the signing of Morocco international Zakaria El Ouahdi from KRC Genk, finally landing their preferred solution on the right side after several weeks of negotiations. The 24-year-old successfully completed his medical on Sunday before signing his contract with the Bundesliga club.
According to Transfermarkt, HSV will pay an initial €8m transfer fee, with another €3m potentially due through bonuses. Genk have also reportedly secured a percentage of any future sale. The structure represents potentially excellent business for Hamburg given El Ouahdi's current estimated €17m market value.
Get German Football News reported previously that HSV had intensified their pursuit of El Ouahdi after agreeing personal terms with the player. Hamburg were preparing another attempt to reach an agreement with Genk after seeing two earlier approaches rejected.
Sporting director Claus Costa ultimately refused to abandon the pursuit or meet Genk's initial demands, with the two clubs eventually finding common ground through a lower guaranteed fee supplemented by bonuses and a sell-on clause.
El Ouahdi arrives to address one of the clearest remaining deficiencies in Hamburg's squad. Following the departures of William Mikelbrencis and Giorgi Gocholeishvili, Bakery Jatta had entered the new Bundesliga campaign with little genuine competition on the right side. Jatta subsequently struggled defensively during Hamburg's 2-0 defeat away at Borussia Dortmund.

Hamburger SV continue to pursue the signing of KRC Genk right-back Zakaria El Ouahdi as sporting director Claus Costa seeks to resolve one of the squad's most obvious remaining deficiencies before the transfer deadline. According to the Hamburger Abendblatt, HSV have already reached a basic agreement with the 24-year-old Moroccan international.
Belgian transfer reporter Sacha Tavolieri reports that the Bundesliga club are now preparing a third offer for Genk after their first two approaches failed to produce an agreement. El Ouahdi himself reportedly favors the move. Kicker identifies the defender as Hamburg's preferred solution and reports that a deal could cost approximately €13m plus bonuses.
The Morocco international offers substantial attacking production from the right flank. El Ouahdi registered eight goals and five **** ists in 34 league appearances last season, adding another four goals across nine Europa League outings. His potential arrival would also address a weakness that Get German Football News' 2026/27 Hamburger SV tactical preview identified as one of the club's principal unresolved personnel issues.
Following the departures of William Mikelbrencis and Giorgi Gocholeishvili, Bakery Jatta currently stands as the only established option for Merlin Polzin on the right wing-back position. HSV have consequently been seeking a player capable of moving ahead of Jatta in the hierarchy.
Bayer Leverkusen full-back Arthur remains the alternative should HSV decide that El Ouahdi's overall package is too expensive. Florian Plettenberg previously reported that Hamburg had reached a basic verbal agreement with the 23-year-old Brazilian over a season-long loan without a purchase option. GGFN covered Arthur's potential departure as part of Leverkusen's extensive late-window restructuring. Die Werkself are themselves attempting to sign Strasbourg right-back Guéla Doué and are prepared to sanction Arthur's temporary departure.

Achieved record full-year net sales and operating income, marking the fourth consecutive year of top-line growth despite a challenging operating environment.
Retail segment performance was driven by the successful acquisition of Bachan's and continued momentum in specialty bakery, specifically Texas Roadhouse dinner rolls which grew 28.1% in the quarter.
Gross margin expansion for the 12th consecutive quarter was attributed to a multi-year network restructuring, including the sale of the Milpitas facility and optimization of the Horse Cave and College Park plants.
Foodservice stability was maintained through strategic partnerships with high-growth national QSR chains like Chick-fil-A, Domino's, and Taco Bell, offsetting declines in smaller accounts.

A warehouse shift in Tulsa will result in 184 job cuts, even as production lines beside it continue to operate.
TheStreet recently reported that Coca-Cola is closing a Massachusetts bottling plant, while Mars-owned Nature's Bakery is transferring production from a Missouri facility to other locations.
The circumstances differ, but both showed how companies are redrawing their manufacturing and distribution networks while their products remain widely available to shoppers.
Now a similar shift is affecting PepsiCo workers in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
PepsiCo Beverages will discontinue warehouse operations at its facility at 510 W. Skelly Drive, Tulsa, on Nov. 15, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice reviewed by TheStreet.

The 2026 NBA offseason has officially entered the twilight zone, and a name that went viral for breaking the news of one of the biggest moves in NBA free agency is officially back, sort of. For those who need a quick refresher: back in 2014, Caroline's Cupcakes in Canton, Ohio, set the internet ablaze after posting that LeBron James' return to the Cleveland Cavaliers was a "done deal" days before his official announcement.
No one else had said this as directly and candidly as Caroline's Cupcakes did at the time. As we now know, the popular Canton-based bakery became an immediate hit nationwide for "breaking" the LeBron news. Now, with James facing another big free agency decision ahead of what could be his final NBA season, the "Cupcake Lady" had NBA fans buzzing—at least for a few hours.
As ESPN Cleveland highlights, the then-owner of Caroline's Cupcakes has since opened a POKE Fresh in the same spot, which is why the original post below is from that company. However, the social media post that first went live dropped a bit of new reporting: LeBron is returning to the Cavaliers, and Bronny AND Draymond Green are coming with.
Now, before we all go bananas over this post, the "Cupcake Lady," as they're known on social media, hit a hard pivot just hours later. Instead of leaving Cavaliers fans dreaming of their new core, an admission was made that this was "not reporting new news" and that the infamous "Cupcake Lady" was just "joking," as seen in the "edit" section below.
Considering the history of how the last news scoop played out, it's fair to say that Cavaliers fans would have loved it if that second edit never appeared on the timeline. Unfortunately, it seems that we're all still playing the waiting game on LeBron's future, and not even the old social account of Caroline's Cupcakes, aka POKE Fresh now, can help us get answers.

LAS VEGAS — The field is growing larger with each passing week. It’s getting to the point where they should hand out numbers to stand in line, like a bakery does on Sunday morning.
You thought $8 billion was too exorbitant a price tag to join the NBA? Guess again.
There’s a lot of rich people in this world and the possibility of owning a professional basketball team is so tempting, money apparently is no object.
By my count, there are six potential groups or individuals that have publicly expressed interest of bringing the NBA to Las Vegas which if approved, is expected to begin play in 2028. And that doesn’t count Shaquille O’Neal, whose hulking presence lurks in the background as he wants to be part of whatever group ultimately prevails. Nor does it include the folks planning the Diamond Arena project across from Mandalay Bay.
If you’re Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, you’re rubbing your hands with glee. Because the price of poker is likely to go up. $8 billion you say? How about $10 billion? Or $12 billion? Who knows where the final number will land?
We probably won’t get a better sense of things come Tuesday when Silver meets with the media following the Board of Governors’ annual summer meeting here in Las Vegas. He’ll get asked the expansion question in various ways and he’ll calmly deflect giving direct answers because he’s not about to skewer the process, one that involves intense vetting and careful consideration on a number of factors, not the least of which will be where will the Las Vegas NBA team call home?
Whoever can deliver on an arena for the team which will allow it to control all the revenue streams a professional franchise needs to have in its possession to have financial success in the 21st Century — suites and club seats, naming rights to the arena, parking, concessions, regional television rights — will be the likely successful bidder.
Let us not forget that this is a business decision first and a basketball decision second. Remember, the current 30 teams are deciding to take a smaller cut of the basketball generated revenue pie by adding two teams (Las Vegas and Seattle). So the last thing they want is for one or both of the expansion teams to fail financially. On the court, they’ll hope the teams finish last and next to last though Silver doesn’t share that mindset.
So if you’re Bill Foley, the owner of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and who is one of the six bidders we know of, you may not be the leader in the clubhouse despite the success your franchise has had on and off the ice. Foley only owns a small piece of T-Mobile Arena — 15 percent —the rest is divided evenly between MGM Resorts and the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), each having a 42.5 percent stake in what VGK fans call “The Fortress.”
And even with Foley’s plans to spend $300 million to upgrade the 10-year-old arena, that still doesn’t mean the NBA team would reap the financial benefits that Silver would like to see.

NEW YORK (AP) — The copilot of a United Airlines passenger jet that struck a light pole as it landed at a New Jersey airport last month recognized the plane was coming in low, but told investigators he didn't realize it in time to call for an aborted landing, according to a new report Thursday.
Crewmembers on the May 3 flight from Venice, Italy, also recalled hearing a loud "thump" and feeling a "mild jolt" just before touchdown at Newark Liberty International Airport, the National Transportation Safety Board stated in its initial report.
The first officer recalled saying "you are still slow and a little low" as the plane descended, according to the report. He then recalled looking back outside and thinking the plane was low, but just about to touch down.
The report provides the first description of the events from the crew inside the plane, but it doesn't identify a specific reason why the plane came in so low, or make recommendations about how to prevent similar incidents. That is not expected until the NTSB releases its final report, likely sometime next year.
But the report clarifies for the first time that it was debris from the light pole, and not the plane itself, that hit a truck traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike. Law enforcement officials initially said the plane had hit the top of a bakery truck, causing minor injuries to the driver.

Students at a high school near Sean Young’s New Hampshire bakery created a mural. But the town told Young the painting wasn’t a mural, it was a sign that exceeded the legal size limit.
