Jonas Urbig is a name that is quickly becoming a hot topic in German football. Hailed as the next replacement for Manuel Neuer (after Alexander Nübel ultimately fell short), Urbig has had some memorable performances over the last year, and impressed enough for Julian Nagelsmann to send him overseas to join Die Mannschaft as part of the practice squad for the World Cup.
"We were all knocked out together; I was part of the group. Even so, it was an incredible experience for me; I got a taste of tournament life and learnt a lot," said a bittersweet Urbig looking back on the World Cup this summer, as captured by iMiaSanMia.
A very mature response from the 21-year-old goalkeeper. It was a massive kudos to the former FC Köln talent that he was brought to come and join the squad in North America, even if it wasn't in the capacity that he would have wanted.
While he is doing all the right things by being grateful for his opportunities, many will be quick to point out that Manuel Neuer should be handing off additional responsibility to Urbig over time, but Neuer's recent statements have contradicted this. Did Neuer hold back Germany at the World Cup? Did Neuer hold back Bayern Munich in the Champions League last season?
While it is impossible to know how the tournaments would have concluded if Urbig were given the full opportunity, but it seems like he will be getting the keys to himself in the distant future. For some, that couldn't come quick enough as Neuer's brilliance hasn't always shown up in the big moments, with some memorable mistakes costing Bayern Munich a tournament exit on multiple occasions.

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has made the club's goalkeeping hierarchy clear ahead of the new season: Manuel Neuer remains the undisputed No. 1, but Jonas Urbig will once again be given opportunities between the posts.
Kompany addressed the situation in an interview with MagentaTV, revealing that Bayern have already discussed the expected distribution of playing time with both goalkeepers internally.
"We communicated with Manu and with Jonas very clearly internally. That's the most important thing," Kompany said.
The Belgian coach stressed that Urbig will not simply be confined to the bench despite Neuer's status as the first-choice goalkeeper. The 23-year-old is expected to continue receiving meaningful playing time throughout the campaign.
"Jonas will get his minutes again this season. That's part of his development and hopefully his future with us," Kompany explained.

Jonas Urbig is not treating Bayern Munich's upcoming friendly against Aston Villa as "just another preseason game."
Speaking ahead of the match, the goalkeeper emphasized the mentality expected at Bayern Munich regardless of the occasion.
"When you wear the FC Bayern jersey, you always have to give 100 percent. I do not care whether it is a friendly or a competitive match, a Bundesliga or Champions League game: you approach every encounter in exactly the same way, with the same mindset, the same conviction and the same sense of responsibility. That is why the clash with Aston Villa will be a proper test, and a game in which we want to continue to improve," Urbig told FCBayern.com.
It is the mentality that has defined Bayern Munich for decades. Every match matters, whether it is lifting trophies in May or building toward the season in August. With Vincent Kompany continuing to implement his ideas and more first-team players returning to the squad, Aston Villa represents another valuable opportunity to sharpen performances before competitive action begins.
For Urbig and the rest of the squad, the objective is simple: keep building, keep improving, and maintain the standards at Bayern Munich.

Manuel Neuer caused a stir by denying reports that he will give Jonas Urbig more minutes in the upcoming club season. That rubbed fans the wrong way, especially after Neuer denied Oliver Baumann a World Cup debut last month, but it looks like Neuer might actually be okay with giving Urbig more minutes.
Bayern's plan for Jonas Urbig this season is not only to replace Neuer when the latter is injured or needs a break, but also to feature in important matches so he can get used to the pressure of being the club's future number one. Neuer is not opposed to that and will support Urbig.

Maybe what Neuer said was blown out of proportion, because he did mention that the goalkeepers will maintain status quo for 2026/27. That means the goalkeepers will still be sharing minutes.

Thank you, Jeju – ******* o, Hong Kong! On the fourth day of the Audi Summer Tour, FC Bayern moved on from the South Korean island of Jeju to Hong Kong. Head coach Vincent Kompany's team received an enthusiastic welcome in the metropolis, where they'll stay until Friday and take part in the Audi Football Summit against Aston Villa (Friday, 14:00 CEST, live on FC Bayern TV PLUS) as well as training sessions, media appearances and partner events. fcbayern.com brings you an overview of the Wednesday on the Audi Summer Tour.
Following a training session at the hotel on Jeju in the morning, Bayern departed for Hong Kong. After the flight of around three hours, Luis Díaz and colleagues were already enthusiastically welcomed at the airport. Then at the team hotel, too, a large number of supporters cheered the German record champions, making it a very pleasant arrival.
In the evening, Bayern legends Giovane Elber and Roy Makaay visited one of the six FC Bayern Pop-Up Stores in Hong Kong. Since 31 July, fans have been able to purchase, among other things, the shirt with the specially made nameset for Hong Kong here, which the team will wear in the friendly against Aston Villa. Mascot Berni also paid the store a visit on Wednesday.

After checking in at the team hotel in Hong Kong, several media appearances were on the agenda for Jonas Urbig and others, with the players answering questions from international and travelling German journalists. "You feel a total openness and affection from the people," said Urbig about the Audi Summer Tour. "This euphoria that we're met with is very special. We're happy to take the time to go the fans, take photos and sign autographs. I'm really enjoying the trip."

Jonas Urbig has revealed he was surprised to hear Manuel Neuer's statement that he's likely to retire next summer
"I actually didn't know he said that. I'm hearing it for the first time," the Bayern Munich goalkeeper said in the mixed zone.
"Generally speaking, the exchange I have with Manu is good, with Sven [Ulreich] and with the entire goalkeeping team.
"That's a different topic and it concerns Manu. We're just happy we have such a togetherness within our goalkeeping team," Urbig added.
The 22-year-old is set to become the heir to Neuer's No.1 jersey, with more playing time agreed by all involved at FC Bayern.

Bayern Munich are planning for the future with Manuel Neuer planning to go into the final season of his career and retire next summer.
From the goalkeeper's entourage, it is said that last season was the season Neuer enjoyed the most in his career to date, reports BILD.
Furthermore, the 40-year-old does not regret his decision to come out of retirement for the German national team at the 2026 World Cup.
Neuer has decided to continue because he feels there's a big chance of crowning his career with another Champions League **** le.
From 2027-28, Jonas Urbig will be the clear No.1 and it has already been discussed with Neuer that Bayern prepare for his succession.

Manuel Neuer has denied reports suggesting Bayern Munich have reached an agreement to give Jonas Urbig more appearances during the upcoming season.
Asked whether such an arrangement exists, the Bayern captain made it clear that he expects the situation to remain unchanged from last year.
"No, I think it will be similar to last season. We'll support one another; we've got a strong goalkeeping squad, including Ulle and the young goalkeepers."
Neuer stressed that the focus is on healthy competition rather than guarantees over playing time.
"The important thing is that we help one another, that we push each other, and that we can always give our best for the team in goal."

On Friday, RAN dropped a bombshell of a report (BFW covered it here), which indicated that former head coach Julian Nagelsmann had created drama by adding Manuel Neuer to the German national team and that Neuer subsequently tried to have Alexander Nübel booted from the squad in favor of Jonas Urbig.
The DFB has issued a statement to deny those claims (via iMiaSanMia):
A recent report by http://ran.de claimed that Manuel Neuer's national team comeback caused internal conflicts, that Julian Nagelsmann acted unilaterally and didn't consult the team, which made goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg consider resigning, and also that Neuer didn't want Alexander Nübel to be in the squad and wanted Jonas Urbig instead
The DFB has denied these claims in a statement: 'The DFB denies that Julian Nagelsmann acted unilaterally regarding the goalkeeper situation, and that Andreas Kronenberg threatened to resign. While the decision was discussed controversially and critically, the entire team stood behind it. The DFB also firmly denies that Manuel Neuer had any influence whatsoever over the squad selection or attached any conditions to his comeback, such as demanding that Alexander Nübel be dropped from the squad or that Jonas Urbig be called up instead.'
After such an epic flameout, there were always going to be leaks — likely detailing internal strife. We saw the same thing happen in both 2018 and 2022. In this case, though, the DFB is looking to move past the Nagelsmann Era pretty quickly, though, and with what looks to be the rapid hiring of Jürgen Klopp, everyone might be inclined to just turn the page on all of the behind-the-scenes details that helped lead Germany to another unfulfilling World Cup.

Well, we all knew this kind of report was eventually going to drop — and this could be the first of quite a few.
Per RAN, former German national head coach Julian Nagelsmann created tension by bringing back Manuel Neuer back to the squad — and almost lost a coach over the decision:
Nagelsmann's about-face shortly before the World Cup nearly cost Nübel another major tournament. As ran learned, the controversial decision to bring Neuer back caused massive turmoil within the DFB team.
Goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg is said to have even considered quitting, as Nagelsmann allegedly made the personnel decision unilaterally, but he, like the national coach, previously agreed to Baumann in the role as number one and Nübel as number two.
The German Football ****** ociation (DFB) denies this, as well as the alleged demand by Neuer to once again drop his rival Nübel at short notice for his comeback and instead nominate Bayern Munich's backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig as the third World Cup goalkeeper. The fact that Urbig was ultimately taken to the USA as the fourth goalkeeper was a compromise.

After Germany's failure at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, just about every former player and pundit made a statement on the tournament. While there was a variety of responses, mostly negative, one stood out among the rest. That of course, was Mats Hummels', who held nothing back in a very candit response calling for serious change from the DFB.
"This is not a coincidence. On the side of the people in charge, this really does call for consequences. I can't put it any other way. We've now had the Euros at home, the Nations League at home, and this World Cup here. Looking back, I still think the performances at the Euros are being talked up too much from a sporting perspective. The other two tournaments were both disappointing. That's why this has to be addressed. Both by the national team coach himself and by the federation. At the very least, there have to be discussions about it – there is no other way. Football is a results-oriented sport. As for the players, I can certainly imagine that some will choose to retire from international football on their own. And then perhaps decisions also need to be made regarding players who may only be in their early 30s, but who have already missed the opportunity at four, five, or six tournaments to deliver a strong campaign or achieve good results for Germany," Hummels said on MagentaTV as captured by iMiaSanMia.
Big words from the former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich defender. While he wasn't shy with what he said, he was absolutely correct. After so many failures now, something big has to change within the DFB as well as the players.
You don't have to read hard between the lines to infer that players such as Leroy Sané, Leon Goretzka, and others are being recommended to retire from the national team at this point. Despite their quality, they simply have not delivered enough after several tournaments to still be trusted at this point.
It is time to give the keys to Lennart Karl, Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Jonas Urbig and the rest of the young talent for a true rebirth.

South Korea’s Kim Min-jae became the only player that Bayern Munich sent to the World Cup to fail to make it to the knockout stage.
Bayern sent a total of 18 players to the tournament, with one of them, Jonas Urbig, being a training goalkeeper for Germany. It was initially 19 before Lennart Karl withdrew from the Germany squad with an injury. Although their time at Bayern has come to an end, Nicolas Jackson and Leon Goretzka are included in said number.
The representative countries are as follows – Germany, Austria, France, ***** an, South Korea, Croatia, England, Colombia, Canada, and Senegal. Among them, Germany, France, England, and Colombia won their groups. Austria, ***** an, Croatia, and Canada finished runners up, and Senegal made it through as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
However, Korea failed to take advantage of the easiest group they had ever received at a World Cup. They started out strongly by beating the Czech Republic, but a drab defeat to co-hosts Mexico and a shocking loss to South Africa saw them praying for results elsewhere to help them into the knockouts. Their hopes were in vain, as only one out of their three required scenarios came to fruition, and the Taegeuk Warriors ended up meekly packing their bags.
Kim himself played every one of Korea’s group games, but he, as well as most of the players, was not at fault for the downfall. Rather, the many faults of coach Hong Myung-bo and the — allegedly — deep rooted corruption of the Korea Football ***** ociation (KFA) made the disappointing results inevitable. The national team had lost the trust of the fans ever since Hong was appointed in questionable manner, and it got to the point where many fans were actively rooting for Korea to get embarrassed so that radical change could be forced into the KFA. Whether said change takes place, and if so, when it does, remains to be seen. At the time of writing, Hong has just resigned as national coach.

There's a natural inclination at Bayern Munich that keeper Jonas Urbig will eventually become the club's number one keeper once Manuel Neuer's days with the German Rekordmeister are over. Neuer's recently signed a one-year contract extension with Bayern, but the understanding for the 2026/27 season is that the veteran keeper will take on more of a mentor-type role as Urbig starts to get more minutes than he has in his two previous seasons at Bayern ever since joining from FC Köln.
As far as the German national team is concerned, there are a lot of moving parts. No one really expected Neuer to be recalled to the squad by Julian Nagelsmann for the World Cup until rumors started swirling around a few months ago that him coming out of international retirement was a realistic possibility. Fast forward to now, and Neuer was in between the sticks for Germany's group stage wins over Curaçao in Houston, Texas and Côte d'Ivoire in Toronto, Canada. Die Mannschaft also clinched their place in the knockout stages and won group E with Curaçao's 0-0 draw with Ecuador in Kansas City.
In the months heading into Nagelsmann getting set to announce his Germany squad for the World Cup, Hoffneheim's Oliver Baumann was under the impression that he'd be on the squad as the number one keeper, but that changed and he was ultimately brought as Neuer's backup. Alexander Nübel was also called up and Urbig was brought with the squad just to be a "training keeper."
For Urbig, there's a chance to follow the same path he's following at Bayern with the national team, but he will certainly face competition to become Germany's number one. Neuer has faith that his understudy can one day take the reigns for the national team, but he also knows it's not a given.
"He's on a very good path and has it all in his own hands. But I also have to say that my other colleagues are doing very well at their clubs. I have respect for all our goalkeepers," Neuer said ahead of Germany's 2-1 win over Côte d'Ivoire.
