Tennessee football's pass defense distinguished itself with crucial first-half interceptions, and its running game too often was too much for Georgia Tech on Sept. 12 at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.
That combination proved decisive as the No. 18 Vols improved to 2-0 with a 45-24 victory over upset-minded Georgia Tech (0-2). But that one-two punch wasn't enough to produce a runaway comparable to the Vols' 56-9 victory over Furman in the season opener.
If you were familiar with Georgia Tech's history under fourth-year coach Brent Key, you might have thought the Vols were catching the Yellow Jackets at the wrong time. His teams have been at their best as underdogs and have upended at least one nationally ranked opponent in each of the past four seasons.
Georgia Tech showed its resolve just when the Vols seemed blowout bound after taking a 31-10 lead early in the third quarter.
The Yellow Jackets sprung to life behind the passing of quarterback Alberto Mendoza, who led them 75 yards for a touchdown and had them on the brink of another score when UT defensive back Dejuan Lane broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone.

Unpredictable French star Gaël Monfils sprung a surprise with his next career move after playing his final match at a grand slam.
Monfils, a two-time major semi-finalist and former world number 11, lost in straight sets to Learner Tien on Thursday night, two days after his 40th birthday.
One of the sport's great entertainers will hang up his racket at the end of the year, but he is not moving into commentating like Tim Henman, coaching like Goran Ivanisevic or even hitting the golf course like Andy Murray.
Instead, Monfils, the husband of women's world number nine Elina Svitolina, is taking an office job in finance.
"I have a new chapter coming next year. I will work in finance," he said. "I already signed to work in wealth management in a Swiss company. So my next chapter (is) working in an office and working in finance.

Aston Villa could hardly have imagined a worse start to the 2026/27 Premier League season.
The Lions were torn apart by Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, with Fabian Hurzeler's side needing just 31 minutes to put the game beyond doubt.
A Victor Lindelof own goal and a debut red card for Joao Gomes summed up a disastrous afternoon for Villa, who were forced into the relegation zone after losing 4-0 on opening day.
It's too early to say whether the heavy defeat points to deeper problems following the departures of several high-profile players including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa, and Lucas Digne.
However, the Villans have sprung into action in the transfer market.

Manchester City face their first away trip of the 2026-27 Premier League tonight when they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Enzo Maresca's side will be looking to build momentum after their late come-from-behind victory at the Etihad Stadium last Sunday.
Crystal Palace will be looking to grab their first points of the season after they were beaten 2-0 by Everton at the Hill ****** inson Stadium in their opening Premier League fixture of the season last weekend. Crystal Palace are now managed by Pierre Sage. Sage replaced Oliver Glasner as Palace's manager after an impressive spell in charge of RC Lens.
Here is the latest City team news and my predicted Manchester City starting eleven ahead of tonight's match.
Jeremy Doku is the only Manchester City player unavailable for tonight's match due to injury. The Belgian international is currently ruled out due to the calf injury he sustained during the first half of Manchester City's 3-0 FA Community Shield defeat to ****** nal. Elliot Anderson is fit and should start tonight after being substituted against Bournemouth after suffering from cramp. Enzo Maresca also told the media yesterday that Matheus Nunes is continuing to work his way back to full fitness.
Enzo Maresca sprung a surprise last weekend against Bournemouth by starting Marc Guehi in midfield. He could decide to go with that particular move again tonight. Guehi slotted into midfield seamlessly and if asked to step into midfield again, Marc Guehi knows what his manager expects.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Speaking for the first time since ralliers began ******* embling in support of her stance against transgender participation in women's sports, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said this was an opportunity for the WNBA to uphold its values of diversity and inclusion.
Cunningham called the ralliers "bold" and "courageous" before Friday night's game against the Portland Fire at the Moda Center, but denied having any direct ******* ociation with organizers of the rallies that have sprung up at the Fever's last two road games.
"I think it's people just practicing their rights of freedom of speech and doing what other fans have been doing since the WNBA has started, and so props to them, props to everyone who was able to be confident and be bold and courageous enough to speak their truths," Cunningham said Friday.
She added: "I think this is a great opportunity for the WNBA. You know, they preach diversity and being inclusive. So, what a great opportunity for them to actually be that."
A few dozen individuals gathered outside the arena Friday in support of Cunningham, who recently said keeping transgender athletes out of women's sports is "common sense" after ESPN published an article in which she originally shared her views. Counterprotesters were also present. This was the second time a rally gathered before a game, following a protest ahead of a Fever game in Seattle earlier this week.

Liverpool are still plotting big changes up top this summer.
We've seen Mohamed Salah move on - agreeing to rip up his £400k per week deal one year early.
That opens a gap at right wing - with Bradley Barcola the favoured candidate to arrive. The 2024/25 Premier League champions will still need to meet Paris Saint-Germain's asking price - currently set at £145m.
If that price doesn't come down we could see the Anfield side move on to other targets.
And now one intriguing opportunity has sprung up according to a report in Fichajes. Because Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola are viewing Real Madrid's Endrick as a market opportunity as Los Blancos move closer to a deal for Yan Diomande.

There were more than five hours on the clock and yet Novak Djokovic was still not done. As Centre Court shook, Djokovic’s 11-year-old son, Stefan, watched on with his head in his hands, up way past his bedtime but gripped by what his 39-year-old father was producing. Felix Auger-Aliassime stood over a forehand and sensed his moment to strike but Djokovic, in a flash, sprung to his right deep behind the baseline, extending the point and the Canadian third seed’s torment. Auger-Aliassime netted and it broke him; the decisive point in the match tiebreak that settled the longest Wimbledon quarter-final ever, a victory that Djokovic ranked as one of his finest on Centre Court.
“These are the moments I still play for,” said Djokovic. If the scoreline - 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (10-4) - was scarcely believable in itself, the sight of Djokovic stretching his limbs and denying the 25-year-old Auger-Aliassime, in five hours and 15 minutes, was sheer madness. It equalled the longest match of Djokovic’s Wimbledon career, eight years on from the 2018 semi-final with Rafael Nadal that was held overnight. Djokovic managed this in one epic, gruelling sitting and just five minutes before the 11pm curfew. When the moment required it, he once again raised his level, booking a semi-final with defending champion Jannik Sinner on Friday.
The celebrations were memorable, the victory too - a battle Djokovic prevailed from in front of his children on Centre Court adding to the sweetness. And yet the message afterwards from Djokovic was that he is not done yet. The records - an eighth consecutive Wimbledon semi-final, the 15th of his career - did not matter. “Right now, it's all business,” Djokovic confirmed. The pursuit of the grand slam record and a 25th ****** le is what fuelled his extraordinary fight and refusal to submit, and yet it is still two rounds away. ”I wish it was finals so I don't need to worry about how the body will feel tomorrow,” Djokovic said.
And there could lie the problem. At this stage of his career, and since the gold medal match against Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 Olympics, Djokovic’s finest victories have arrived before the final. Last season, the quarter-finals of grand slams fell in the the sweet spot where Djokovic was fresh enough to compete against younger opponents, but late enough in the tournament where he knew he needed to step it up. He did, in defeating Alcaraz at the Australian Open, Alexander Zverev at the French Open, Flavio Cobolli at Wimbledon and Taylor Fritz at the US Open. Outlasting Auger-Aliassime at Wimbledon is another added to the list.
Djokovic, though, arrived at those semi-finals and found that he was physically cooked, unable to recover for the next challenge. The exception came at the Australian Open in January, and was memorable in itself with Djokovic ending Sinner’s reign in Melbourne by beating the world No 1 in five sets. But that followed a different sort of tournament for Djokovic, after his fourth

Amy Adams is more than just a five-time Oscar nominee — she's also apparently a life saver.
Recounting an unbelievable moment of selflessness on Monday's "Smartless" podcast episode, the "Cape Fear" star shared that she once came upon a man bleeding out from his neck after being stabbed. Acting alongside her husband and father, she sprung into action.
"We were in Santa Monica, coming out of our favorite restaurant … These people were screaming and a guy was walking and they were yelling, 'He's dying!' And my husband's like, 'That's blood!'" Adams told co-hosts Sean Hayes, Jason Bateman and Will Arnett. "I was like, 'Darren, you stay here with our daughter.' [My dad and I] ran over and he'd been stabbed in the neck. So he was bleeding and his friends were freaking out."
The topic of discussion arose as Hayes himself shared a story of how he once aided a gunshot victim by removing his shirt to create a sort of tourniquet, staying with the individual all the way through their ambulance transport to the hospital.
"I've come across a couple of scenes where we've been sort of the first people on the scene," Adams echoed.

The Braves had not had a good time recently, especially in terms of hitting the ball. Jacob Misiorowski came into this game as the best pitcher in baseball. It seemed like a recipe for continued misery/Miz-ery. Well, I am happy to inform you that about two hours and thirty minutes after first pitch, the Braves prevailed by a score of 3-2. They did a bit of everything: they eventually wore down and punched out Misiorowski thanks to Mauricio Dubon's two-run single, they hit a homer, Martin Perez pitched a really good game, and Eli White had a game-saving outfield ***** ist in the ninth. Woo. Wow. Wooo!
Early on, the Miz was as advertised. Things felt unfair, even without the context of the Braves' recent offensive struggles. After Martin Perez threw a 12-pitch, 1-2-3 first, Misiorowski sprung out of the dugout and hurled a nine-pitch frame of his own. Perez responded by striking out the side… and Misiorowski vaguely wobbled a bit.
Dominic Smith led off the bottom of the second with a bloop single, and Austin Riley took a two-strike approach in a zero-strike count and bounced a hopper through the right side to put two on with one out. Mike Yastrzemski hit a hard grounder that led to a bang-bang out at first, which brought up White. Misiorowski pumped in four fastballs, the first two at 103 and the next two at 104, White missed two of them (and fouled off one in the middle), and that was that.
Then, it was Milwaukee's turn to kinda-sorta strike. This was, of all of them, the definite Perez pachinko inning. Blake Perkins led off the frame with a swinging bunt single. After a strikeout, Joey Ortiz turned a down-the-pipe fastball into a hard grounder up the middle. It could've been a double play if it were hit at an infielder, but it was not. A comebacker moved the runners up, and the Braves elected to walk Jackson Chourio so that Perez could face Brice Turang with the platoon advantage. That sorta worked, because Turang hit a down-the-middle sinker into the ground, but it also didn't work because the ball was again hit nowhere near the Braves' defensive alignment, and went for an infield single as it hobbled up the middle. The Brewers led, 1-0. It seemed imposing, given Misiorowski's presence looming on the mound. (Perez got out of it as old friend William Contreras flew out on a 2-0 count.)
It was imposing, as Misiorowski faced the minimum in the third, fourth, and fifth. To his substantial credit, Perez didn't fall apart either — the strikeouts went away but he and the defense kept the Brewers at bay. A two on, zero out situation was untangled as lefty-killer Andrew Vaughn hit a screamer right at Jorge Mateo at shortstop, giving the Braves a double play; Perez escaped he frame with a strikeout to end his outing.

Notorious killer Mackenzie Shirilla — who was found guilty of murdering two pals in 2022 by slamming a speeding car into a brick wall in Ohio — is gleeful over the newfound attention to her case and hopes reality star and criminal justice advocate Kim Kardashian may help get her sprung from the slammer, sources say.
According to insiders, Shirilla, 21, is thrilled over being thrust back into the spotlight by the Netflix documentary The Crash, which examines the tragic deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and their friend Davion Flanagan, 19, and her ensuing prosecution.
"Mackenzie is totally buzzing that there's so much interest in her case. She and her parents are convinced they'll get through this and come out strong — not to mention rich and famous," an insider says.
Shirilla and her mother, Natalie, shared a prison phone call in which the jailbird, who was sentenced to 15 years to life, sounded elated over her claims of innocence becoming "national news," according to Daily Mail.
Prosecutors say the then 17-year-old driver purposely gunned the gas and hit the wall at nearly 100 mph, killing her two passengers. Shirilla has insisted a medical emergency is to blame and that she would have never intentionally hurt the two men. "I have no recollection of that morning. I'm not saying I'm innocent," she explains in the doc, per Oxygen. "I was a driver of a tragedy, but I'm not a murderer."

June 7 (UPI) -- While American racing attention was riveted to Saratoga during the Belmont Festival weekend, much of the rest of the world had eyes on Epsom Downs for the Derby and the Oaks or on Tokyo Racecourse, where ******* anese milers tackled the Grade 1 Yasuda Kinen.
Of course, Derby was the main course.
Aidan O'Brien was a solid favorite to saddle his 12th Derby winner and fourth in a row, Saturday at Epsom Downs. And he did, but not without some surprises and a dash of controversy.
O'Brien had four runners in the Classic, including the favorite, Benvenuto Cellini, a Frankel colt who won the Group 3 Chester Vase as his entry to the big race.
But when the gates were sprung open for the Derby, Benvenuto Cellini got away well back in the field and it was two other O'Brien colts, Action and Christmas Day, who showed the way on the rain-soaked course.
