The call-up to San Diego happened for San Diego Padres top prospect, Ethan Salas, after a loud last week with El Paso. The Padres catcher-of-the-future impressed in his 24 games with the Chihuahuas and finished strong before getting the promotion to finish his 2026 season with the major league squad.
In 105 plate appearances with El Paso, Salas hit .326/.410/.539 while slugging six doubles, two triples, three home runs and 24 RBI. His .944 OPS is tops among team regulars. In his last week with the Chihuahuas, Salas delivered with a .947 OPS, walking four times, hitting a triple, and stealing four bases.
During his time in Triple-A, Salas has a 44.9% hard hit rate (40-44% average), a 93.1% in-zone contact rate (78-83% average), and a 9.8% whiff rate (22-26% average), all with a 90th percentile exit velocity of 103.7 mph.
For his 2026 season, between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso, Salas hit .296/.374/.448 with 19 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, and 61 RBI in 96 games as a catcher and DH.
He was four years younger than any other player in El Paso while he was there. He was at least three years younger than anyone else who played in San Antonio this season.

We have selected the contract of C Ethan Salas from Triple-A El Paso, recalled RHP Jhony Brito from El Paso, and transferred INF/OF Luis Rengifo to the 60-day IL.

The high school football season kicks off this week with 16 coaches making their debuts in Greater San Antonio. About half are veteran coaches who landed at a new school. The others are getting a chance to lead a program for the first time.
Regardless of their experience, each job has its challenges. Here's a look at the challenges each coach faces at his new position:
Myles Duelm, Madison
Duelm is taking the reins of a program that lost one of the city's top football players to graduation. Wide receiver Jordan Clay is now at the University of Washington after spending all four years of his high school career at Madison. Although Duelm is a first-year head coach, he has plenty of familiarity with the region. He was previously Reagan's offensive coordinator and also worked at Brandeis.
Vernon Hughes, Judson
Hughes takes over a team that hasn't had a winning season since 2021, which is a shocker considering the Rockets' reputation as San Antonio's most decorated football program. Hughes takes over for Mark Soto, a Judson alum who played for and won a state championship under D.W. Rutledge in 1988 but was unable to restore the Rockets to state prominence from the sidelines. The Rockets are never short on talent. Hughes' task will be utilizing that talent to get the Rockets back on track in one of Region IV's toughest Class 6A districts.
Matt McKinney, Harlan
McKinney is tasked with leading one of the city's top 6A programs in his first season as a head coach. He will look to sustain the success the Hawks had under Eddie Salas, who led Harlan to the postseason in all eight of its varsity seasons. While McKinney is in a new role, he is no stranger to the program after serving as Harlan's offensive coordinator since the school opened.

The situation at River Plate is becoming increasingly complicated under Eduardo Coudet's management. In the last few hours, it was confirmed that Uruguayan Matías Viña and youngster Alex Woiski have been dropped from the first-team squad, joining the large group of players training separately at the Cantilo training ground.
With these two new absences, "Chacho" Coudet is reinforcing his strict squad overhaul. Viña and Woiski were added to a list of sidelined players that already included big names and young prospects from the club:
Youngsters: Ian Subiabre and Santiago Lencina.

He’s 27 years old and still pre-arbitration, meaning he’s under team control for the foreseeable future. Connor Wong had a miserable 2025 at the plate but has bounced back this year, although the power still hasn’t returned. He’s 30, but still has a few years of team control left. Mickey Gasper is the surprise addition to the group. He’s been the best of the group offensively, but also is the wrong side of 30 and has only just made the major leagues.
So, what should they do for the rest of this season? Do they let Narvaez work through his slump at the plate because he’s the most likely of the group to be the catcher of the future? Do they continue to run Gasper out to try to give a boost to the struggling offense? Do they let Connor Wong continue to handle the staff, because pitchers seem to like him?
