Eli Drinkwitz turned his postgame news conference in Lawrence toward a 90-second video on Friday night, a few hours after Missouri had settled the 122nd Border War 38-21 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.
The clip, ******* led "Heroes and Villains" and narrated by former Kansas nose tackle Gilbert Brown, went up on the Jayhawks' social accounts on Thursday and reached back to the Civil War fighting along the state line, splicing in images of John Brown and William Quantrill under a narration line about right and wrong, Kansas and Missouri.
Kansas ran it again on the videoboard shortly before kickoff. Drinkwitz was asked about it once the Tigers had moved to 2-0, and he did not stop at one sentence.

"Disappointed in the rivalry, the turn that it took today. I thought that was uncalled for, and you know, this is about two teams playing football, and especially on 9/11 when we need more unity now than ever before. To be putting some stuff on your screen, celebrating. I mean, everybody's got complicated pasts, you know, and to make that an icon was bizarre to me. And so I'm just glad, you know, that this whole right versus wrong bullcrap that was started just got settled on a football field because it's a football game. It's an American football game that people love to come watch and cheer for their teams. It's not even deeper than that, and I get there's a past to it. But why are we stirring that bullcrap up? You know, it's 9/11. This country needs unity now more than ever, and I was embarrassed for them to be honest, and that's why I tried to embarrass them at the end."

LAWRENCE, Kan. — It was that deep for Missouri football.
Before Friday night's Border War matchup, the second in the revived rivalry between two of college football's fiercest foes, Kansas posted a video to its social media accounts that made blunt, hardly subtle references to the rivalry's roots and the Civil War.
There were snippets of various Civil War-era figures, including John Brown and William Quantrill. Included in the 90-second clip narrated by former KU nose tackle Gilbert Brown, was the phrase "there's right and wrong, there's Kansas and Missouri."
It went viral. The Jayhawks played it again on the videoboard shortly before kickoff at David Booth Family Memorial Stadium.
That, in no uncertain terms, rubbed Mizzou and its head coach the wrong way.

Texas looks to start a new winning streak today after winning two of three against the A's. Tampa is in town for four games. It would be a good thing if the Rangers won three of four in this series.

The Texas Rangers scored five runs while the Washington Nationals scored zero runs.
Maybe all the Rangers needed was to play a team from the National League. Sure the American League is terrible this season but Texas obviously likes a challenge. Why put in your best effort against the likes of Anaheim and Not-Oakland when you can show up the Senior Circuit?
It's probably just anecdotal but it feels like the Rangers have been cooled off a time or two by scheduled days off. However yesterday was a day off that was most welcome and allowed the club to reset after a well-documented unseemly trip out West.
Back home and with the trouble on the coast fully flushed, the Rangers scored a run in the first inning to grab the all important early lead. The run that scored following a couple of hits from Wyatt Langford and Corey Seager came after Cal Quantrill had worked around a leadoff CJ Abrams double in the top of the first.
An inning later, Texas didn't need to manufacture a run as they turned to the long ball with a solo shot from Justin Foscue. One of many Rangers who have been slumping in August, Foscue collected his eighth dinger of the year as the night's designated hitter against a left-handed starter for Washington.

The Nats' struggles against divisional opponents continued with a sweep at the hands of the last place Mets. Thankfully they will be playing a non-divisional opponent to start the week. The Nats have been quite good in interleague play with a 22-17 record. They will look to keep that going against the Rangers.
Nasim Nunez is getting the start at his new shortstop position. However, CJ Abrams will not be at second base quite yet. He will get the start at DH. That means Jorbit Vivas is at second and Brady House is at third. Harry Ford will get the nod behind the plate in this one. Abimelec Ortiz will be in the lineup against the team that signed him as well. Jackson Kent will be making his second career start tonight and looks to improve his control.
The Rangers offense has not been an elite one this year, but they have some dangerous bats. Despite a down year, Corey Seager remains a feared bat. Wyatt Langford and longtime NL East foe Brandon Nimmo have been two of the Rangers best hitters this season. Catcher Danny Jansen returns after being out with injury for a while. Cal Quantrill has had a major bounceback in Texas this year and he will get the start.

Texas Rangers lineup for August 18, 2026 against the Washington Nationals: starting pitchers are Cal Quantrill for the Rangers and Jackson Kent for the Nationals.
The Rangers return home after a disappointing, to say the least, West Coast road trip. They play the Washington Nationals today. The Nationals are starting a lefthanded pitcher named Jackson Kent, who I had definitely heard of and knew was a real person before two minutes ago. The newly activated Danny Jansen is behind the plate.
The lineup:
Langford — LF
Seager — SS

It's already been do-or-die time for the Nationals as their chances of a playoff berth begin to slip away, but this series against the Texas Rangers might be their final chance to ignite a late push. Washington is 5-10 in the month of August, and, coming off a 3-game sweep at the hands of the New York Mets, find themselves 6 games below .500 and 7.0 games back of a playoff spot. If there's any chance that this team could see a playoff game, they need to swing the momentum immediately.
Their opponent, the Rangers, are clinging to the last Wild Card spot at just a 61-64 record. They're also just 2.0 games behind the Houston Astros for the top spot in the American League West, and this series could be a big one for them to instill themselves further in the playoff picture.
Game One – Tuesday 8:05 PM ET
WSH: LHP Jackson Kent (0-0, 6.75 ERA)
TEX: RHP Cal Quantrill (4-4, 3.44 ERA)
Kent showed a lot in his first start at the MLB level, with plenty of good and bad to go around. He racked up 6 strikeouts in 4.0 innings, but walked 5 and gave up 3 earned runs. The 23-year-old will have his chance to make an argument for his future on the MLB club in the next few weeks, and it starts with a good outing in the series opener.

Well, this one was a dud. Coming off a series sweep of the Cleveland Guardians, the Tampa Bay Rays' offense remained quiet at the plate and dropped the opener to the Texas Rangers by a score of 4-1.
Griffin Jax got the start for the Rays and was serviceable, allowing just a pair of runs over 5.2 innings of work. He punched out ten, walked three, and allowed five hits. Only one of the two runs he allowed was earned. The effort should have been enough to earn his seventh win of the season. Instead, he left with his eighth loss of the year.
The real story of the night was the Rays offense, or lack thereof. Outside of Aranda and Caminero, who each tallied a pair of hits, the rest of the lineup mustered just one hit. Cal Quantrill held the Rays to just one run an two hits over 5.1 innings of work. He punched out seven and walked just one.
Trailing 2-0, the Rays did threaten in the bottom of the fourth and for a brief moment it looked as if they were poised to take the lead and potentially send Cal Quantrill to the showers early. After a leadoff strikeout by Yandy Diaz, who's struggles at the plate continued Tuesday night, Jonathan Aranda singled and later advance to third on a double by Caminero. Mullins then reached on catcher's interference to load the bases for Chandler Simpson. Then, shockingly, Simpson found a way to hit into a groundball double play as he slapped a groundball right back to Quantrill who quickly threw home to start a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

The Texas Rangers mustered up just three hits in a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers improved to 39-50 while the Rangers fell to 45-44. While they remain a game over .500, there's no reason for this team to be losing to a squad that is poised to be sellers at the trade deadline.
Detroit starter Jack Flaherty picked up just his second win of the year at the expense of the Rangers. The 30-year-old pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing the Rangers' lone three hits in the process. He struck out five batters, marking the only five strikeouts of the game for the Tigers pitching staff.
Cal Quantrill put in five solid innings of work, but all three runs in this game were allowed in the first two innings. Things didn't go according to plan on the Fourth of July as Quantrill fell to 3-1 thanks to a pair of runs scoring in the first and one more coming across in the second.
Texas committed the game's lone error, but the biggest low of this game was the Rangers offense. On a night where fireworks are so prevalent, there were no signs of life in this one for a Rangers team that continues to fight in the American League West.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Joc Pederson hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and the Texas Rangers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Tuesday night for their season-best fifth straight victory.
Pederson went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Josh Jung also drove in two runs and Kyle Higashioka had three hits for Texas.
Evan Carter drew a leadoff walk in the ninth, moved to second on a wild pitch by Riley O’Brien (3-3) and third when Higashioka singled. Pederson and Jung followed with RBI singles before Pederson scored on Brandon Nimmo’s sacrifice fly to make it 7-4.
The Cardinals are 2-9 in the regular season against Texas in St. Louis.
Cal Quantrill (3-0) entered with a runner on second and two outs in the eighth and needed just one pitch to retire Iván Herrera. Jakob Junis pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
