ST. LOUIS (AP) — Alex Bregman had a homer, two doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 7-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.
Bregman had sat out Sunday's game in Pittsburgh after going hitless in his previous three games. Against the Cardinals, he snapped out of an 0-for-12 slump with four hits and scored three runs in a game that was delayed an hour and 46 at the start due to rain.
Nico ****** ner also had four hits, including a two-run homer in the ninth as the Cubs banged out 14 hits in the win.
David Peterson (6-7) worked 5 2/3 innings and earned the win. The 30-year-old left-hander, who was acquired on June 25 from the New York Mets, struck out two and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks.
Matthew Liberatore (5-8) was tagged for three runs on eight hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings.

The St. Louis Cardinals entered Monday night's game against the Chicago Cubs with an urgent need to turn their recent downward spiral around. The Chicago Cubs and specifically their bats seemed determined to not allow that to happen.
Matthew Liberatore started the game for the Cardinals who planned to piggyback his start with Hunter Dobbins for the final half of the game. David Peterson, who the Cardinals hit hard in their last encounter, made that seem like a distant memory as he held St. Louis and their struggling offense to a minimum of opportunities.
The Cubs scored on Matthew Liberatore in each of the first 3 innings. In the top of the 1st inning, Liberatore walked Pete Crow-Armstrong, but then picked him off of first to the delight of the "Tarps Off" crowd in right field. Chicago got the last laugh, though, as Suzuki and Bregman hit back-to-back doubles giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead.
Chicago would score again in the top of the 2nd inning as Nico ****** ner led off with a single. After Ian Happ struck out, Dansby Swanson singled giving Chicago runners at first and second with just one out. Amaya then smacked a single to right doubling the Cubs lead to 2-0.
The Cardinals would get one run back in the bottom of the 2nd inning when José Fermín would become the Fermínator muscling up for a 407 foot shot into Big Mac Land reducing the Cubs lead to 2-1.

Gulf Breeze boys lacrosse has found its next head coach.
The school announced on July 14 that **** istant head coach Spencer Pickrell has been promoted to head coach and will lead the program this spring.
"Spencer has demonstrated everything we look for in the leader of one of our athletic programs," Gulf Breeze athletic director Matt Alt wrote in a press release. "He is an exceptional teacher of the game, a proven developer of young men, and someone who leads with integrity, discipline, and humility. His commitment to Gulf Breeze Lacrosse, combined with his distinguished military service and passion for mentoring student-athletes, makes him the ideal person to lead our program into the future."
Pickrell coached under head coach Erik Liberatore last season, helping lead the Dolphins to a 12-8 record, the program's first ever regional final appearance and their third straight district **** le. Liberatore accepted a new job outside of last month and left the program after one season as head coach.
He's served the past three seasons as a varsity **** istant coach, while his son Landon has played on the varsity lacrosse team. He also founded Blackwater Lacrosse in 2023, a local club organization that's quickly become one of the best in the panhandle, and has served as a Gulf Breeze area youth coach.

The bullpen choices of Walt Weiss are unknowable, but the lineup is largely predictable. For tonight’s contest, he’s running with the same 1-5 as last night. Drake Baldwin remains in the cleanup spot but will DH. Joey Bart, the only Brave to have a homer off Matthew Liberatore in seven plate appearances, will catch for Reynaldo López and bat eighth. Austin Riley moves up a spot to hit sixth. Jorge Mateo gets the start over Jim Jarvis in the nine-hole and at shortshop.
Mike Yastrzemski was going to sit in favor of Eli White anyway versus the lefty Liberatore, but he has been swinging it well in the month of July. Unfortunately, the baseball gods have come to collect. His left elbow inflammation has landed him on the IL in a host of roster moves announced this afternoon.

Coming into the 2026 season, not much was expected from the St. Louis Cardinals. ***** ody would have been surprised if they lost 90 games this year, as they were fully diving into their rebuild.
However, they have come out as one of the biggest surprises this year. The youth movement is looking more like seasoned vets with their level of production this year.
Jordan Walker is leading the way on offense, hitting .288/.342/.511 with a career-high 18 home runs and 58 runs batted in, but he's not the only one. JJ Whetherholt is doing well, and so are Ivan Herrera and Alec Burleson. Pitching-wise, the stable of arms has done enough to keep this team above .500, with Andre Pallante leading the team in wins, Michael McGreevy leading the team in ERA, and Matthew Liberatore leading the team in strikeouts.

The St. Louis Cardinals begin a challenging road trip starting Tuesday night in Atlanta as they’ll do battle against the NL East division-leading Braves. Timing may be on the side of St. Louis, though, as there are some numbers that might work in their favor.
If you look at their records on paper, you would think that the St. Louis Cardinals would have their work cut out for them as the Atlanta Braves lead the National League East with a record of 49-32. That might still be the case, but the Cardinals are catching the Braves at the best possible time for two reasons. First, the Braves have lost 7 of their last 10 games.
