Kroger CEO Gregory Foran has been open about the fact that many of his chain's stores need work.
"Our operating costs have been growing faster than our sales. That's not sustainable. And frankly, it's not acceptable. Taking costs out of this business is not optional. It's the starting point for everything else we want to do," he said during the chain's first-quarter earnings call.
He also made it clear that many Kroger locations are not well run.
"The way we operate behind the stores needs to improve. We need to move faster, make decisions more quickly, and get more out of the ******* ets and the talent we already have," he added.
Those are problems that won't be easily solved because of how the chain has opted to spend its money. Kroger has also been dealing with falling in-store customer counts, and that may be a problem the chain caused itself.

When Kroger introduced Greg Foran as its CEO earlier this year, the supermarket chain drew accolades for its decision to hire a new leader who had distinguished himself by turning around Walmart's U.S. operations.
But beyond his background as a senior executive at the world's largest retailer, Foran brings Kroger another ******* et that could prove pivotal as he strives to work the same magic at Kroger that he did at Walmart: experience working outside the United States.
Ahead of joining Kroger in February, Foran served as CEO of Air New Zealand. And before his promotion to head Walmart's stateside division in July 2014, Foran was president and CEO of Walmart Asia, a role he ******* umed after running Walmart's China unit. Earlier in his career, he held multiple positions at Australia-based retailer Woolworths Group, which runs stores in that country and New Zealand.
The perspective people develop over years working in other countries' retail sectors can give an edge over grocers that have not looked as far afield for leaders, industry ******* ysts said.

The Cincinnati Business Courier has reported that Kroger Co. and Procter & Gamble Co. will no longer sponsor the LPGA’s Cincinnati stop.
The Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G was on the LPGA's schedule for five years. The event was strongly attended, with roughly 50,000 fans, and held over three different courses, most recently at Maketewah Country Club, where Lottie Woad held off Haeran Ryu for the ***** le. Typically held in the fall, the event moved to mid-May in 2026.
“After thoughtful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus our efforts in other areas that align with our long-term priorities," a Kroger spokesperson told the Cincinnati Business Courier.
In February, Kroger appointed Greg Foran as its new Chief Executive Officer.
The 2026 LPGA schedule includes 31 official events. LPGA commissioner Craig Kessler, who has been in the position for a full year now, is working toward a revamp of the tour’s schedule, though details of a future blueprint have yet to be shared. Sources say the tour is expected to announce at least one new event in the coming months.

There has reportedly been little communication between the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James' camp ever since the team was swept in the second round of the NBA playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder. James said on an episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast that he will take his time when it comes to making a decision in free agency this summer, and he implied that a decision may not come until perhaps August.
If he doesn't retire but wants to leave the Lakers, his options will reportedly be to join either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Golden State Warriors, and the Miami Heatcould be looming as a dark horse candidate. In recent days and weeks, the Warriors have seemingly become a very real threat to nab James, especially after a report on Sunday that they will try to trade forAnthony Davis, James' former co-superstar on the Lakers.
With Golden State's pursuit of the NBA's all-time leading scorer getting serious, the Lakers may soon have a conversation with James about his immediate basketball future, per insider Chris Haynes.
"LeBron James and Los Angeles Lakers still have yet to have a conversation regarding his future but that's expected to change in light of Golden State Warriors' strategic maneuvering to position themselves as a landing spot, sources tell me."
James, of course, has spent eight seasons with the Lakers, and while many fans view that time as an overall disappointment, he and Davis did bring the franchise an NBA championship in 2020. The franchise is now led by Luka Doncic, and with Austin Reaves blossoming into an All-Star-caliber player, James willingly accepted a new role as his team's third scoring option this season.

The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is one of the best stocks to buy now for good returns. On June 22, Morgan Stanley reiterated an Equal Weight rating on the stock but cut the price target to $67 from $73 a share. The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is currently trading at $58 a share.
The investment bank terms the strategy of self-funding price investments to drive market share as prudent, given CEO Greg Foran's track record of supporting execution. However, Morgan Stanley insists that a self-funding price investment strategy comes with its degree of difficulty.
Similarly, on June 22, UBS reiterated a Neutral rating on the stock and cut the price target to $63 from $70. According to UBS, the first-quarter results showed that Kroger Co. has the right plan to strengthen its competitive edge. For starters, the company is well-positioned to fund necessary investments from its savings.
However, the research firm cut its price target amid concerns that Kroger may not have what it takes to deliver long-term targets of 3% to 5% operating income growth and high-digit to low-double-digit shareholder returns.
The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is one of the world's largest food retailers, operating nearly 2,800 grocery stores and multi-department stores across 35 U.S. states. The company serves over 11 million customers daily, offering a massive footprint in grocery, pharmacy, manufacturing, and fuel services.

The grocery giant is showing early signs of a turnaround, but investors sold the stock because the most important part of the strategy is still under wraps.
If you just glanced at Kroger (KR)'s first-quarter numbers, you might be scratching your head. Identical sales grew 1.0%, online sales popped 19%, and the company reaffirmed its full-year guidance. So why did the stock drop 8.4% on June 18? The headline numbers were fine; that was never the issue.
The reason for the initial drop was that Kroger's new CEO, Greg Foran, used the first-quarter earnings call to present investors with the unvarnished truth: operating costs are growing faster than sales, margins are under pressure, and the cure is still being formulated. What unsettled the market was a problem laid bare alongside a plan promised for later, and investors have clearly decided a promise isn't enough.
In the week since, the stock hasn't recovered; it has drifted to around $58, near its 52-week low, as ****** ysts from Citi, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, and others trimmed their price targets following the report. The market, it seems, wants to see the fix, not just hear that one is coming.
