(NewsNation) — Human urine left at Everest Base Camp is enough to melt more than 150 tons of ice and snow, according to a new study.
Researchers examined human activity on the Khumbu Glacier, where Everest Base Camp is located, during the 2023 spring climbing season.
Their findings, published in the journal Regional Environmental Change, suggest that activity at the camp generated enough heat to melt nearly 5,000 tons of snow and ice.
29% AI chatbot replies to voting questions inaccurate, outdated: Study
Of that total, scientists estimated that urine alone contributed to the melting of about 155 tons of ice and snow.

A historical Los Angeles property that late actor Tim Curry spent years carefully restoring to its former glory has come under offer, just hours after new of the "Rocky Horror" star's passing was announced.
The sprawling property, which is located in Los Feliz, was purchased by the actor for just $650,000 in 1993—and then underwent a multi-year renovation by Curry, who later showcased the results of the transformation in a shoot for Architectural Digest.
Drawing on inspiration from European design style, Curry—who passed away at the age of 80, 14 years after he suffered a major stroke—transformed the house into a warm, eclectic abode that would later be owned by a host of other famous faces, including "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson, "The Pitt" actor Noah Wyle, and "The Big Bang Theory" comedian Jim Parsons.
The four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom spread was most recently listed for just under $10 million in July 2025, however it has since undergone several price cuts that eventually brought the ask down to $7.5 million on Aug. 6 of this year.
When news of Curry's death was revealed to the public, the home—which is listed with Ben Belack of Alex Everest—was still on the market, however records how now been updated to reflect that it has come under "contingent" offer, meaning that the seller has accepted an offer, but certain conditions need to be meet before the deal can close.

KIRKLAND, Wash. – All the West Suburban 14-Under softball team needed was an opportunity.
And twice with two outs, they capitalized.
With timely hitting and strong pitching, West Suburban defeated Asia-Pacific (Bacolod City, Philippines) 2-0 Wednesday at the Junior League Softball World Series at Everest Park.
"We knew coming in it was going to be a tight game," West Suburban manager Rick Roberts said. "... We grinded out enough at-bats to get it done."
The East Region representative out of Johnstown will face Hudsonville, Michigan, the winner of the Central Region, at 7 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals. West Suburban's lone loss was to the West Region (Palo Cedro, California) by a 2-0 decision Monday.

Twenty days into the World Cup and the figures are in. The main takeaway? A star-spangled soccer popularity surge is engulfing this 50-state land and, so long as the No 1 act is in town, it shows no signs of relenting.
FOX Sports, who spent $485m to acquire the American television rights for the biggest World Cup of all time, have made no secret of their lofty viewership statistics after the group phase. Even withstanding the contrived punditry from the much-maligned Alexi Lakas, the numbers across the board tell the story of a nation gripped by football in an unprecedented manner.
USA’s opening-game triumph against Paraguay, primetime on Friday night, raked in 19 million viewers, topped up to 26 million when including Spanish-language viewers on Telemundo and Peacock. For their other two group games, that total number did not drop below 23 million. For context, Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration last year drew in 24.6 million viewers across all 15 major US networks. And the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals series win, clinched the day after the US victory over Paraguay, drew in 20.6 million per game across ABC and ESPN.
Of course, Super Bowls are always the unassailable Everest for American TV viewership figures; 19 of the 20 most-watched programmes in US broadcast history are the NFL’s annual extravaganza, which regularly tops 120 million viewers. But this summer’s fever of footballing patriotism, intertwined with a natural boom from hosting the event, is only heading one way, so long as business is taken care of on the pitch. The reward for the United States – or USMNT [United States Men’s National Team] as they’re known in these parts – finishing top of Group D is a last-32 match-up against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara.
The temporarily renamed 75,000-seater San Francisco Bay Stadium, home to the 49ers NFL franchise, will be a sea of red-and-white as day gives way to dusk on Wednesday evening, with a pocket of boisterous blue-clad Bosnian supporters in the lower tiers. Tickets are priced at $1,200 which makes it the third-most expensive event ever at the stadium, behind two Super Bowls.

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A Sherpa guide was found crawling to base camp on Mount Everest a week after he went missing, and was reunited with his family who had given up hope he would return.
Dawa Sherpa was last seen around May 29 descending the mountain, but he did not make it to base camp even though his client did. The pair were among the last climbers on the mountain as the climbing season came to an end and the route was dismantled.
Dawa was located by a cleaning crew Thursday morning as he was crawling down the snowy slopes around the Khumbu Icefall, just above base camp, said Pemba Sherpa of 8K Expeditions, which was coordinating the search.
He was quickly carried down to safety and given food and water. A rescue helicopter flew him to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu, where his wife and daughter, who had already begun funeral rituals for him, were waiting.
"We first heard that he was still alive on the local news and from a person we know who called with the news that ... he is being brought down," his wife, Damu Sherpa, said.
