LONDON, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The Bank of England raised interest rates for the first time in over three years on Thursday and warned that at least one more increase was likely if the US-Iran conflict continues, as it started on a path that its main peers have already embarked on.
British inflation ‌is likely to reach around 5% in the middle of next year, the BoE said, more than double the central bank's target and a blow for new Prime Minister Andy Burnham ‌who has sought to ease cost of living pressures.
While there was little evidence so far of faster inflation outside sectors directly affected by higher energy costs, the BoE said the amount of inflation pressure coming down the road from months of high energy prices required a rate rise now.
"Today's increase shouldn't be seen as the first in an inevitable long sequence of hikes. But unless the conflict in the Middle East is resolved, neither does it seem likely to be the last increase," Governor Andrew Bailey said.

The 2026 midterm elections was a decisive victory for Democrats, who won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. With Republicans retaining the White House, the election results bring a period of divided government starting in January.
Wall Street's initial reaction has been enthusiastic. As of this writing (Nov. 4), the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) surged more than 1,500 points during morning trading, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) also rallied.

Beneath the broader market's gains, investors are undoubtedly repositioning their portfolios. Artificial intelligence (AI) hyperscalers like Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms are surging, while many semiconductor stocks and data center operators are plunging.
The contrasting performance reflects uncertainty about how the election could affect AI and adjacent industries. For investors wondering whether to change their portfolios following the election, Warren Buffett's advice about mixing politics and investing is particularly relevant.

Social media influencers have made owning a laundromat look like an easy way to make money, with videos showing buckets of quarters and stacks of cash rolling in. But some aspiring entrepreneurs who bought into the hype are finding out the hard way that these businesses are costly to maintain, and the income is anything but passive.
In a new report, The Wall Street Journal examined the growing popularity of laundromat ownership on social media, where videos of owners collecting cash have attracted millions of views. What gets far less attention are the expenses and day-to-day headaches that come with running one.

Amazon (AMZN) is teaming up with Uber Eats (UBER), allowing Prime members to order from restaurants through Amazon.com and the Amazon app, as third-party delivery gets more competitive.
Prime members who order via Amazon will get free delivery on orders of $25 or more. Customers will also get $20 off their first two Uber Eats orders of $25 or more through the first 14 days.
"This is what Prime is all about: unlimited free, fast delivery on a wide selection of products, big savings, fantastic entertainment, and now even more value on restaurant delivery with Uber Eats, all in a single membership," Jamil Ghani, worldwide vice president of Amazon Prime, said in a statement.
Uber also offers its Uber One service, which includes no delivery fees on food and groceries, as well as other benefits, for $9.99 a month, or $96 per year. Amazon Prime, which includes access to Prime Video and Amazon Music, as well as free shipping options, costs $140 a year.
Amazon has been taking share in the grocery delivery market, especially on same-day and one-hour deliveries. Earlier this week, Amazon announced that it added more than 6,000 items to its grocery options over the last six months.

Florida voters on Tuesday approved a major overhaul of the state's property tax system. But the droves of billionaires and other ultrawealthy people who recently moved there are unlikely to notice much of a difference from its headline tax break.
Amendment 3—which raises the homestead exemption on non-school property taxes from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and to $250,000 in 2028—passed with 62% of the vote, according to the ***** ociated Press. Supporters pitched Amendment 3 as relief for everyday homeowners, and for many, it is. But because the exemption is a flat dollar amount, it does far less for the billionaires who turned South Florida into one of the country's wealthiest enclaves.
Take Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, who moved his firm from Chicago to Miami, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also moved to Miami in 2023 and has since bought a $237 million compound on Indian Creek, the island nicknamed "Billionaire Bunker." Bezos is also reportedly buying a $69.5 million oceanfront estate in nearby Golden Beach.
Experts told Fortune, though, the bigger factor of Amendment 3 for people like Griffin and Bezos is a less-noticed part: a tighter limit on how fast taxes can rise on second homes, rentals, and other properties that aren't a primary residence. Florida caps how much those properties' taxable values can increase each year, and Amendment 3 cuts that cap from 10% to 5%. In a hot market like South Florida's, that slows tax growth on homes whose values are climbing quickly, and many wealthy buyers own more than one.
But for a billionaire who claims a Florida homestead, the savings from Amendment 3 aren't that noticeable. Raul Gastesi, a real estate attorney and cofounder of Miami law firm Gastesi Lopez Mestre & Cobiella, calculated that at the statewide average non-school tax rate, the expanded exemption will save a homestead owner about $2,085 a year once fully in place. A home ***** sed at $350,000 would see its local services property tax bill fall from about $3,135 to about $1,050. A $50 million homestead would go from about $524,000 to about $522,000.

Accepting the $1M gift eliminates nearly 7% interest on a jumbo mortgage, delivering an immediate risk-free return that rivals most market strategies.
The new $15M lifetime gift exemption lets the in-laws transfer the full $1M immediately tax-free, requiring only a Form 709 filing.
An intrafamily loan at the 3.72% IRS minimum rate saves roughly 3 percentage points versus the current 6.9% jumbo mortgage rate.

People who pursue a FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) philosophy aggressively save and invest with a goal of retiring young enough to enjoy the freedom that a substantial nest egg affords. A fatFIRE adherent aims to accumulate a seven- or eight-figure retirement portfolio, enabling a lifestyle that ordinary early retirement budgets cannot support. When a couple's in-laws share those fatFIRE values, the relationship tends to run smoothly. But good intentions packaged as sizable financial gifts can shift that balance quickly, and without diplomacy and a shared strategy, even a generous offer can quietly fracture family dynamics.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced their first international trip since moving back to the U.K. The Sussexes are reportedly heading to Brussels. The news comes amid serious allegations surrounding Meghan's estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr., and his alleged possession of CSAM, which have recently come to light.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will visit Brussels next week, on November 10, to open the Lost Screen Memorial. For those unversed, the Sussexes previously launched the installation, which paid tribute to child victims who lost their lives due to the harms of social media, in New York City in April last year.
The **** ss of Sussex then travelled to Switzerland in May this year to bring the Lost Screen Memorial to Geneva's Place des Nations (via PEOPLE). The Lost Screen Memorial consists of 50 smartphone screens. Every screen showcases the lock screen photo of a child who lost their life due to the harmful effects of social media.
This is done with the consent of the parents, who are members of the Archewell Foundation Parents' Network. Harry and Meghan are set to give a keynote address in the Belgian capital, advocating for the need for safer online **** es. Additionally, the Duke of Sussex will partake in a panel discussion in Belgium **** led "Beyond Promises: Building a Digital Future That Works for Children."
The update hardly comes as a surprise for fans, as the Sussexes have always spoken about the importance of creating safer online **** es for children. The Brussels trip marks Harry and Meghan's first public appearance following reports that Philippine authorities are investigating allegations that her father possessed CSAM.

A married couple over 65 who haven't claimed Social Security can pull about $47,500 from an IRA and owe the IRS nothing.
Collecting the average benefit shrinks the tax-free IRA withdrawal to about $34,000, because half of Social Security counts toward taxable income.
Past the zero-tax line, the Social Security tax torpedo makes each extra IRA dollar count nearly twice, producing an effective marginal rate of about 19%.
The biggest 401k decisions tend to get made once and never revisited: when to roll it over, what to hold inside it, and when to start taking money out. That is exactly what the report: 401k & IRA Tips and Answers was created to address, and it is free today. Read more here. (Sponsor)

Meghan Markle reportedly despises the feeling of "begging for acceptance" from the royal family. The report comes amid the speculation surrounding the ***** ss of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry's relationship with the senior members of the institution, following their return to Britain. Now, according to a new report, a source claimed that Markle has been perceiving that Kate Middleton and Prince William have control over the public conversation. And, it has reportedly been getting quite frustrating for her.
The alleged feeling of inferiority with respect to the royal family has reportedly not been sitting well with Meghan Markle. As reported by Heatworld, a source revealed that Kate Middleton has been "hoping the brothers can somehow work it out. She'll always have a soft spot for Harry and would love him back in the fold." This comes despite the Waleses' dignified silence regarding the Sussexes since their return to the UK.
However, according to the source, the Princess of Wales is aware that she has to handle the situation "tactfully" with her husband, Prince William. Per the source, however, she refuses to give up the hope that the two allegedly estranged brothers can reconcile one day.
Per the news outlet, the insider further claimed that Markle "can't stand the feeling that the royal family has the upper hand – and hates the idea of being portrayed as desperately trying to claw their way back in, only to be repeatedly rejected." According to the insider, "It's like they're begging for acceptance from people who have no intention of giving it."
Furthermore, the source also explained to the publication what Markle has been feeling about the entire situation and what she might do. According to the source, "There's a defiant side to Meghan." The ***** ss of Sussex will "do what she wants and won't allow the royals to determine or stop her happiness or success," the source added.

Meghan Markle is facing renewed scrutiny following reports that she is preparing to film in Australia. After the **** ss of Sussex and Prince Harry relocated to the UK at the end of August, reports of an upcoming work stint in Australia have led royal commentators to question how the family will manage the transition.
Meghan Markle is set to appear on Junior MasterChef Australia's upcoming season, which will film in Australia in 2027. However, it has not been confirmed whether Prince Harry, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will be joining her. The Sussex children recently changed schools in the UK after their security team raised concerns about their previous commute. The possibility of another move has now prompted questions about how the family's arrangements could work during Meghan's filming commitment.
On The Sun's Royal Exclusive, the **** ss of Sussex was criticized for the possibility of relocating her kids again. "Career-wise for her, it's, you know, it's good news," host Sarah Hewson said. She continued, "What about for the kids who they've just brought over to the UK, got settled in a new school. Is that going to change anything or do we think the kids will be going?" The Sun's royal editor Matt Wilkinson shared his thoughts. "The children thing is a really interesting thing because we know that they've already changed schools once," he said.
Wilkinson added, "They said they were coming back to the UK for the children's schooling. So these are unanswered questions…" The royal editor was unsure whether it would be "an exceptionally long period for Meghan and Harry." He wondered if the Sussexes will take their kids to another school. "Is it going to be another um you know, traffic crisis outside of school in Sydney or Melbourne or something? But yeah, I would really like a little kind of welcome break…," Wilkinson said.
Hewson felt Harry could take the kids for a trip to Australia if it occurs during school days. "[They could] take the kids to go out and see mum while she's working," the royal correspondent explained.

A strong showing by Democrats in Texas swept Gina Hinojosa into office as the state's first Democratic governor since 1990 in a contest closely watched by Big Tech companies.
Texas is considered a bellwether for government restrictions on AI data centers and was just one place where deep voter unease over the build-out was on display. Voters across the country passed a series of local ballot measures aimed at restricting construction in the years ahead.
Hinojosa, Texas's first Latina governor, has pledged to impose a moratorium on data center construction in Texas, which accounts for more than 25% of planned US capacity by 2030.
"I want to say something to the powerful people who have gotten very comfortable running this state," she told supporters in her victory speech. "The voters have delivered a mandate for change, and it is change they will get."
Her victory was one of a series of wins for Democrats in Texas. The party is also on track to take control of the Texas House, which would give Hinojosa more power to follow through on restrictions even as the state Senate appears set to remain under Republican control.

The maximum 2026 Social Security benefit is $5,181/month, requiring 35+ years earning at or above the $184,500 wage cap and claiming at 70.
Most workers can't hit the wage cap, but delaying Social Security to 70 and boosting salary through job-hopping raises your benefit meaningfully.
Combining a $2,500 monthly Social Security benefit with $32,000 in annual IRA or 401(k) withdrawals can match the maximum benefit's $62,000 yearly income.

A widow who stays as beneficiary on her late husband's IRA avoids roughly $172,000 in forced taxable income over four years before his RMD clock starts.
Filing single cuts her Medicare IRMAA threshold in half to $109,000, so a $40,650 RMD alone can trigger $974 in extra annual Part B premiums.
Contributing to or missing a required distribution from the inherited IRA permanently strips away the deferral option the IRS otherwise allows surviving spouses.

Just two miles short of the finish line of the 2026 New York City Marathon on Nov. 1, 24-year-old runner Rachel Apa collapsed. She died of a rare and potentially life-threatening illness that can be brought on by excessive exertion, the New York Times reported.
It's called rhabdomyolysis, and while there are relatively few cases nationwide each year, it can strike during endurance or intensive exercise, including marathons.
Apa was running her first marathon to raise money for Parkinson's disease in honor of her late grandfather, according to the New York Times. But Apa was no stranger to athletics, having played Division I field hockey in college. Her family said Apa had been in "perfect health." Plus, she'd been training for the race for months.
But at mile 18, Apa texted her father, Steve, who'd been checking in at each mile: "Ow." At the end of the next mile, she wrote, "Ow ow." She stopped responding after that. Apa's mother, Michelle, was at the race and had watched her daughter run by earlier on. Her parents noticed on the marathon tracking app that Apa stopped moving after mile 24.
Apa collapsed just after running past hospital social worker Michaela Nichols, who was cheering on participants. Nichols ran over and checked Apa's pulse, but couldn't find one. Three other people — two of whom said they were physicians — ran over to give Apa CPR. Marathon medical staff tried to revive her with a defibrillator before an ambulance arrived. She was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center and treated for six hours, but could not be saved.

John Frieda, the celebrity hairstylist whose eponymous product range — its beloved Frizz Ease serum, especially — proved a commercial sensation, has died aged 75.
The British entrepreneur, who counted Madonna and Princess Diana among his clients, died "peacefully" and "surrounded by his family," according to a statement posted to his Instagram by his London salon on Wednesday.
"His talent and passion touched so many, and his legacy will live on in every single one of us," the statement added, describing Frieda as "a true icon of the hair industry." His stepdaughter Agnelli Lagrange also confirmed the news on social media, where she called him "the best man to ever exist." Neither statement specified a cause of death.
The son of a hairdresser (and the grandson of a barber), Frieda was born Alan Howard Frieda in London in 1951. He started going by the name John after joining London's famous House of Leonard, because the salon already employed an Alan.

LONDON (AP) — World leaders who have sparred with the "America first" President Donald Trump greeted the rout of his Republican Party in the U.S. midterm elections with a measure of relief Wednesday, allowing themselves to hope for a less combative U.S. foreign policy.
But that hope was seasoned with the expectation that American voters' rebuke would not necessarily end the U.S. conflict with Iran or change Trump's policies on tariffs or his lukewarm-at-best support for Ukraine and America's European allies.
Progressive politicians cast the results as part of a trend of liberal comebacks around the world, following recent defeats for populists on the right in Hungary, Brazil and Serbia.
Spain's social democratic Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on X that Americans had voted "Against hate. Against machismo. Against climate denialism and against the privileges of the elites."
"It happened in Brazil. It just happened in the US. And it will happen soon in Spain," wrote Sánchez, who faces an election Nov. 29.

The president said the defense secretary is "doing a great job."
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth would remain on the job, even as he acknowledged that the war with Iran had contributed to Republicans' sweeping midterm losses and as Democrats prepare to use their new congressional majority to potentially investigate the Pentagon chief.
Trump dismissed the possibility of replacing Hegseth, telling reporters he was "doing a great job." When asked about speculation that Hegseth is eyeing Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn's soon-to-be-vacated Tennessee seat, Trump predicted the defense secretary would be "very popular" in the state.
Blackburn, who won Tennessee's gubernatorial race Tuesday, declined to weigh in on who might be picked to fill her Senate seat. Asked about who would be appointed, she said, "It's not a conversation for today."
Trump's remarks come as Republicans grapple with the political fallout from the eight-month war with Iran, which has driven up gas prices and fueled voter frustration over the cost of living. The war and its economic consequences are widely seen as a major factor in Republicans' crushing midterm defeat.

Kate Middleton has reportedly had enough of the friction with Queen Camilla. While observers have long speculated that Prince William and Kate maintain reservations regarding Camilla's history within the family, the Prince and Princess of Wales have historically maintained a cordial public relationship with the Queen. A new report claims that dynamic has shifted, with Middleton reaching her limit as behind-the-scenes tensions escalate into an outright royal standoff.
Kate Middleton is reportedly gearing up for a fresh battle against Queen Camilla and appears unwilling to back down. Although Kate and Camilla stood together at a state banquet held in honour of the Sultan of Oman last week, it seems that things are not quite as they appear.
According to a latest report by Heat World, William and Kate have started increasing their public appearances and their willingness to be photographed. This is reportedly not going down well with Camilla, who is starting to feel the heat.
A source attached to the outlet revealed that the Queen is very nervous about what the future holds for her when William and Kate take over the crown. This has seemingly led to explosive tensions with King Charles, who has found himself stuck between his wife and son.
Camilla feels that William and Kate have been too eager to step in and take charge of the royal throne. The Queen Consort worries that they are looking to push her out. The source also claimed that Camilla believes Kate has deliberately excluded her from meetings, limiting her involvement in royal decisions.

A tiny blue dress has stolen the spotlight this Halloween. Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen's baby daughter stepped into Halloween "Alice in Wonderland" style, complete with a satin skirt and sparkling tulle. Her parents also built a full storybook world around her, from a rabbit-hole tunnel to towering playing cards for her first Halloween celebration.
The photos appeared on Beau Society's Instagram account with the caption "We're all mad here…" The post also thanked the event lead, the venue, and the florists, photographer, photobooth, and design team.
Amid the snapshots covering the party, it was the protagonist who stole the show. Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen's seven-month-old daughter, Harper Haize Allen, was dressed as a tiny Alice in her parents' wonderland.
The party's theme was "Allen's in Wonderland," a play on "Alice in Wonderland" by customizing it for the Allen family. Additional photos shared by Raven Moore, wife of Allen's teammate DJ Moore, showed an entrance shaped like a giant clock that led into a long black-and-white tunnel.
Inside, red flowers hung over a signpost pointing to "Wonderland," beside an oversized red-spotted mushroom. Marquee letters spelled out "We're all mad here." They were flanked by giant King and Queen of Hearts cards, resembling Steinfeld and Allen respectively. Checkered floors, oversized chess pieces and standing playing cards completed the scene.

Sydney Sweeney just dropped another Cindy Lou Who video, and the internet has thoughts. The actress shared a new holiday campaign for her lingerie brand that offers fans an early Christmas surprise.
Sydney Sweeney's lingerie brand SYRN shared a new video on Instagram promoting its holiday collection. The brand's caption read, "Our gift to you: early access to All I Want Is Plaid, available NOW." The video continues the Cindy Lou Who-inspired campaign from How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Sweeney rocks red-and-black plaid lingerie pieces with oversized bows in the new promotional video. She also pairs the look with a white fur-trimmed cape and thigh-high stockings. Meanwhile, decorated Christmas trees, wrapped gifts, and Christmas lights round out the festive setting.
Sweeney first unveiled the Cindy Lou Who-inspired look on October 21. The original advertisement featured her wearing plaid pajamas and a festive cape while carrying gifts. Additionally, another scene showed her decorating a Christmas tree in a Corpse Bride-inspired outfit.
However, the campaign drew online criticism after its initial launch. Many commenters pointed out that Cindy Lou Who is traditionally portrayed as a young child. Despite the backlash, the brand has now released five additional photos and videos for the collection.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Hollywood plans might be on hold. According to sources, their Netflix film projects haven't shown any clear progress since March. However, another source claimed that this is standard practice in the industry. Meanwhile, their production company has reportedly lost another executive.
Sources told Page Six that the Sussexes' Netflix films, "Meet Me at the Lake" and "The Wedding Date," remain in development. The first is based on Carley Fortune's bestselling book. It has reportedly been in development since August 2023, and it's believed to have an attached director whose identity remains under wraps. "The Wedding Date," based on Jasmine Guillory's novel, has been in development since 2025.
However, a second source called it simply how Hollywood works. "Things are not made in a day," the industry insider said. They explained that adaptations take a while, especially as producers work with the book writers on the script.
The couple's untitled scripted polo drama also hasn't received any update. Harry is reportedly working on a documentary about Princess Diana ahead of her 30th death anniversary. Netflix's potential involvement in the film currently remains unclear.
Meanwhile, Archewell Productions' longtime head of nonfiction, Chanel Pysnik, is reportedly leaving. She helmed the Netflix documentary "Harry & Meghan." Page Six was told that she wanted a "new chapter." Following her exit, Nishika ******* ble, senior vice president of scripted television, remains a key executive in the company. The outlet reported last month that Archewell Productions was downsizing.

Bad news for "Star Wars" fans: Adam Driver is squashing any possibility of returning as Kylo Ren to the galaxy.
On a recent episode of "The Rich Eisen Show," Eisen asked Driver if he thought he'd ever play the villain in the franchise again. The "Girls" actor responded: 'Yeah, it's over… No more 'Star Wars.'" We "tried to do one more," said Driver "but they're like, 'No, he's dead,'" referring to Disney studio executives Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, who rejected a screenplay for a standalone movie centered on Kylo Ren that he'd pitched with Steven Soderbergh.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have to rethink their plans for a lavish home in the UK. The Sussexes reportedly have their sights set on a sprawling country estate for privacy and entertaining. But the £10 million price tag may be putting that plan out of reach. Their property search has now raised questions about what they can comfortably afford.
According to Rob Shuter's Naughty But Nice, the Duke and ***** ss of Sussex have been eyeing a £10 million (approximately $13 million) country property in the Cotswolds. However, an unnamed source claims their budget may not stretch to the kind of estate they want.
"They have champagne tastes, but the bank balance isn't matching the ambition," a source told Rob Shuter. "They want a magnificent country estate where they can entertain, enjoy privacy and live the lifestyle they imagine for themselves. But a £10 million house is simply beyond their reach right now."
Another insider claims their search has met with a roadblock. "Their house hunt has effectively stalled. They haven't found anything they both love that they can realistically afford," another insider revealed to Naughty But Nice. "It's extraordinary that a couple who talk so much about independence are once again relying on a billionaire friend to provide them with somewhere to live."
The couple's existing properties could also factor into their plans. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continue to own their $14.5 million Montecito mansion in California. While selling it could potentially free up funds for a UK purchase, the report does not suggest that they are preparing to put it on the market.
