The FBI arrested a suspected Chinese agent at Los Angeles International Airport after she allegedly surveilled the Taiwanese president's U.S.-based son, law enforcement sources told CBS News.
Wanying "Heather" Zhang, an Irvine, California, realtor, was cuffed by federal law enforcement on Sunday before she boarded a flight to Shanghai, China, from LAX, on a charge of acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.
Zhang's husband Edric Ding, a realtor at the same firm, told CBS News when reached by phone Sunday: "I don't know anything yet," and declined to comment further.
It was not immediately clear if Zhang has an attorney.

TAIPEI, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Taiwan flexed its chip diplomacy muscles at a major trade show last week, portraying itself as a democratic and reliable supplier for the AI revolution, while signalling a willingness to share the benefits of its semiconductor prowess with like-minded partners.
Home to companies like TSMC whose chips power AI applications, diplomatically isolated Taiwan has long sought to leverage its tech prowess to garner international support, something Beijing routinely seeks to block saying the island is merely one of its provinces.
But Taiwan also faces pressure from the United States, its most important international backer and arms supplier, to shift more chip manufacturing there. That comes as TSMC is investing $265 billion in factories in the state of Arizona.
President Lai Ching-te, who, unusually, spoke at two separate events on the same day at the SEMICON Taiwan trade show, said Taiwanese companies were expanding globally to "let resilience create shared prosperity", and that the island's chip strength was based on democracy and rule of law.

Semiconductor industry leader Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) has expanded its collaboration with Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company MediaTek to co-develop next-gen AI computing platforms.
The centerpiece of this expanded partnership is MediaTek's adoption of Nvidia's NVLink Fusion interconnect. This lets MediaTek's customers design custom AI accelerators (XPUs) that plug into Nvidia's rack-scale AI factories. To show its commitment, Nvidia has also invested $3.5 billion in convertible bonds issued by MediaTek, giving the company the capital needed to develop these NVLink-supported chips.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A group of Chinese artists is boycotting a major art exhibition in South Korea over the organizers' plans to use the name "Taiwan Pavilion" for an exhibition of works by Taiwanese artists.
China considers self-governing Taiwan to be part of its territory and rejects the island's claim to sovereignty. Beijing generally refers to Taiwan as "China's Taiwan region."
China's Foreign Ministry on Thursday criticized the South Korean organizers of the biennial Gwangju Biennale, one of Asia's most prominent art exhibitions, saying the organizers have "stubbornly clung to the wrongful practice, allowing China's Taiwan region to participate under a designation that is completely incompatible with its status."
Spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China hopes the South Korean government will uphold its political commitment to the "one China" principle through concrete action.
The Chinese artists said the same day that they were withdrawing from the festival, which opens Saturday and runs through mid-November.

PENGHU, Taiwan, Aug 28 (Reuters) - In the pre-dawn darkness on an island in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwanese troops earlier this month pulled long, gleaming 105mm shells from their green plastic canisters. After all the ammunition had been checked and safely loaded through hatches on four tanks, troops waited silently for the order to fire.
(Read the story on Reuters.com: )
The soldiers are among the thousands of troops that form a garrison on the Penghu Islands and they are training for war with China. If Beijing decides to attack, they will be on Taiwan's frontline.
A popular tourist destination known for its pristine beaches and coral reefs, this strategically crucial cluster of 90 islands and islets, about 50 km off the southwest coast of the main island of Taiwan, would be hit in the first wave of an attempted Chinese invasion, according to senior Taiwanese security officials and military experts.

SMCI sank 7% after Taiwan indicted nine people, including two local unit employees, for illegally routing 74 AI servers to China via falsified documents.
DELL slipped 2% while NVDA and HPE held steady, as markets read the case as employee-level misconduct rather than a corporate export-control failure.
SMCI already faces a separate independent board review of export-control transactions, creating two overlapping compliance risks that keep the stock difficult to price.

KINMEN, Taiwan, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Peace can only be secured through strength and not even an inch of territory can be sacrificed, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Sunday, visiting a sensitive frontline island to mark a key battle with Chinese forces almost seven decades ago.
Taiwan has controlled the Kinmen and Matsu islands, which lie just off the Chinese coast, since the Republic of China government fled to Taipei in 1949 after losing a civil war with Mao Zedong's communists. No peace treaty or armistice has ever been signed.
In heavy rain, Lai laid a wreath and bowed at a memorial park for the 68th anniversary of the 1958 clash with Chinese forces, known as the start of the second Taiwan Strait crisis — the last time Taiwanese and Chinese forces battled on a large scale.
Addressing veterans later, Lai expressed gratitude to those who "stood united and fought a ******* battle to repel Communist totalitarian aggression".

Pittsburgh — Hao-Yu Lee warned him.
Five years ago, former big-leaguer Yu Chang visited a Nike camp in Taiwan that Lee participated in. Chang, until Monday, held the record for most hits in a season by a Taiwanese playing in the big leagues.
"I always told him, five years after this, I will come see you," Lee said, smiling.
Five years later, Lee, on a night where he reached base five times, whacked his 55th hit of his rookie season Monday in the Tigers' 8-5 win. One better than Chang's national record.
"My bad," Lee said, laughing.

It is not often that TSMC (TSM) takes cues from Intel (INTC), but that is undoubtedly what's happening. According to The Information, the world's largest contract chipmaker is quietly building a new packaging technology modeled on Intel's EMIB. TSMC's own engineers are reportedly calling the project "EMIB-like" in-house. The company is developing it with a Taiwanese substrate maker, Kinsus Interconnect Technology. Following the report, TSMC's U.S.-listed shares rose about 8%, while Intel climbed roughly 11% on July 30. For a company that usually defines the industry's direction, TSMC borrowing ideas from Intel is worth a closer look.
The fight is all about how chips get packaged. TSMC's main method, CoWoS, uses a large and expensive silicon layer to link chips together. Intel's EMIB takes a leaner route, embedding tiny silicon bridges only where the chips actually connect. That makes it cheaper and potentially better suited to the increasingly large AI chip designs. The timing makes this sting more for the Taiwanese company. TSMC's CoWoS is sold out into 2027, with some customers waiting well over a year. That backlog is pushing buyers to look for alternate suppliers, and Intel is ready. Its newest version, EMIB-T, recently hit a 98% yield rate, matching CoWoS in that metric, and has already drawn interest from Google (GOOG) (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), and Nvidia (NVDA). Every customer who leaves over the wait chips away at TSMC's lead.

TAIPEI, July 19 (Reuters) - Taiwan must work together to protect its democracy and not become part of China, President Lai Ching-te said on Sunday, calling on members of his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to oppose the "red terror" coming from Beijing.
Lai, who won election two years ago, and his ruling DPP, champion Taiwan's separate identity from China, a position that frequently angers Beijing which views the island as an inviolable part of Chinese territory.
Speaking to the DPP's annual convention, Lai said Taiwan must remain vigilant in times of peace, pointing to what he said was China's "legal warfare", such as its new ethnic unity law which gives Beijing the basis to take action against people outside its borders.
That has alarmed Taiwan, because it could give Beijing another legal basis to try and prosecute or arrest Taiwanese it views as separatists. China has rejected all criticism of the law. China's legal system has no jurisdiction in Taiwan.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has undoubtedly been the biggest theme in the stock market over the past few years, with many AI-focused companies delivering spectacular gains. But as the sector matures, investors are beginning to look beyond industry giants like Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) and explore other parts of the AI supply chain that stand to benefit from the next phase of growth. One of the biggest winners from this shift has been Micron Technology (MU), which has enjoyed a stellar rally during the first half of 2026, outperforming many other AI-related stocks that have struggled to maintain their momentum.
The company's strong performance has been fueled by booming demand for its memory and storage chips, which are essential for AI workloads and data centers. At the same time, tight supply has pushed memory prices higher, creating an ideal environment for Micron. Now, the company is back in the spotlight after announcing an investment in Taiwanese wafer manufacturer GlobalWafers to help finance its new wafer fabrication facility in Sherman, Texas. The move is part of Micron's broader strategy to strengthen the United States semiconductor supply chain while supporting its long-term manufacturing expansion.

TAIPEI, July 10 (Reuters) - Taiwanese memory chipmaker Nanya Technology said on Friday it plans capital spending of more than T$200 billion ($6.2 billion) next year, roughly four times this year's figure, amid soaring demand for memory chips as it rides an AI boom.
President Pei-Ing Lee told an online press briefing that the preliminary expenditure plan aims to help ramp up spending on a new plant, although the budget has yet to receive board approval.
Lee was speaking after Nanya reported unaudited second-quarter revenue of T$82.55 billion, up 684% from a year earlier. The company's net income surged 1,324% to T$50.19 billion, while gross margin improved to 79.5% from a negative 20.6% a year earlier.
Nanya, whose customers include Nvidia, Qualcomm and Google, expects to spend more than T$50 billion this year, Lee said. Total investment in the new plant will reach about T$480 billion at full production capacity, he added.

Interested in Amazon.com, Inc.? Here are five stocks we like better.
Hyperscalers like Amazon are shifting away from commercial GPUs toward proprietary chips such as Trainium 3, pushing Taiwanese suppliers to raise shipment volumes sharply.
Amazon is pricing reserved GPU capacity higher while its AWS custom silicon pipeline reaches an estimated $225 billion in committed customer revenue.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. benefits as the sole foundry for major hyperscalers' custom chips, running 3nm capacity at full utilization with expanding margins.
Hyperscalers are quietly ending their dependence on legacy graphics processing unit (GPU) makers by aggressively migrating to building their own chips. For years, the major cloud providers operated essentially as toll collectors. They bought commercial GPUs off the shelf at a premium and rented out that compute power to enterprise clients.

TAIPEI, July 1 (Reuters) - Taiwanese ships off the island's east coast should ignore any boarding and inspection demands by China's Coast Guard, and if necessary Taiwanese Coast Guard vessels will intervene to stop this from happening, a senior official said on Wednesday.
China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, sent Coast Guard ships last month into the waters off Taiwan's east coast for what it called a "special maritime traffic law-enforcement operation," angering Taipei.
China said the operation was in response to an announcement by **** an and the Philippines that they would begin formal talks on their maritime boundaries, which Beijing viewed as involving Chinese waters off Taiwan.
Taking lawmaker questions in parliament, Hsieh Ching-chin, deputy head of Taiwan's Coast Guard, said if an "incident" happened in those waters, ships should notify Taiwan's Coast Guard and "not respond to the so-called boarding inspections" by Chinese vessels.
"If the situation is urgent, Coast Guard vessels will sail between the two ships to separate them," he added, referring to Taiwanese ships.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China's newest and most powerful of its three aircraft carriers sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, the Taiwanese defense ministry said, a day after Taiwan began a five-day military exercise on responding to a Chinese attack.
The Fujian carrier first sailed through the narrow body of water separating China and Taiwan in a trial run last September. It later transited the strait for the first time as a fully commissioned military vessel in December.
China claims the self-governed island as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring it under Beijing's control. China regularly sends navy vessels and war planes towards Taiwan in military exercises that have become more frequent in recent years to where they now occur almost daily.
Taiwan on Monday kicked off its own five-day exercise to support its response in case of a possible Chinese military invasion.
The U.S. Navy sends warships through the strait periodically, as do some of its allies, in a warning to Beijing against any attempt to use force to establish its claim to the island.

NAIROBI, June 17 (Reuters) - Kenya has barred delegates from Taiwan from attending an international conference on oceans in the east African country under pressure from China, Taiwan's government said.
China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and opposes any treatment of the island as a sovereign state. Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims.
Visas issued to Taiwanese scientists were revoked at the last minute, the Ocean Affairs Council (OAC), a Taiwan government agency, said in a statement posted on X on Tuesday, adding that some participants had their passports and phones confiscated for more than 20 hours.
