When the Olympics come to Los Angeles in 2028, the USA taking home a gold medal in men's basketball is far from a sure thing — the world is catching up fast with the five-time reigning gold medal winners.
The two biggest threats to take that gold away from the USA are France, led by Victor Wembanyama, and Serbia, led by Nikola Jokic. Those two countries met Thursday in a friendly prep game for upcoming World Cup qualifying, and Jokic put on a show with 20 points, nine rebounds and eight ****** ists to lead Serbia to the 90-87 win.
Wembanyama had a tougher time, scoring 10 points, shooting 1-of-6 from 3-point range, but he had his moments as well.
After the game, Jokic had the highest of praise for Wembanyama.
"He is a special opponent because he is unique as a player and as a person. I don't see him as a rival, and I don't take this personally," Jokic said to the media, via Eurohoops.net. "He has the opportunity to be the most unique basketball player we've ever seen – to be the best ever."

Boston Celtics big man Neemias Queta will be suiting up for his Portuguese National Team in FIBA World Cup play this summer in the qualifier window games set to go down in Europe, according to new reporting from Eurohoops Dot Net contributor Stefan Acevski.
Per the Eurohoops Dot Net reporter, Portugal finished their slate of games in the initial phase of the qualifier games with an overall record of 3-3, and is now waiting for the start of the second round of FIBA World Cup qualifying play. In the first segment of that play, they will take on the Spanish National Team on August 28 and play host to the Georgian National Team this August 31.
"The roster of 16 players for these matches has now been announced, with the standout name being Neemias Queta, who recently extended his contract," adds Acevski.
Coming off a season that saw the Lisbon native have the best regular season of his NBA career to date, only to stumble in postseason play, more high-leverage action for Queta ahead of Boston's looming 2026-27 regular season can only help his development.

Dončić also praised former teammate Jalen Brunson, saying he had congratulated him after his strong postseason and also spoke about the possibility of what might have been if they both had stayed in Dallas. “He’s played really well. I sent him a message, and he has every reason to be happy. We’ve both improved a lot since then. We’re not the same players we used to be. It would have been very good, for sure.”

Luka Dončić admitted it always feels special to return to Madrid. “It’s always great to come back here,” he said. “I’ve returned many times, and it’s always beautiful to be in Madrid.” Having experienced the pressure of playing for Real Madrid, Dončić sees clear similarities with life at the Lakers. Although the Lakers reached the playoffs, Dončić had little interest in celebrating the team’s progress. “It’s pretty similar,” he said. “At both clubs, the expectation is always to win. If you don’t win the championship, it’s a bad season,” he said. “That’s how I see it.”
