AXTI surged on optical sector momentum and 165% YoY revenue growth; TE jumped 10% as new US solar tariffs protect its domestic manufacturing plans.
BW landed a 20-turbine Siemens data center deal and drew a 7.66M share Ameriprise disclosure, but still trades like a turnaround on a weak chart.
Act now: the ****** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises didn't make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.
Three second-derivative AI plays are in focus Friday morning. AXT (NASDAQ:AXTI) is trading higher alongside a broad rally in optics names, T1 Energy (NYSE:TE) is bouncing on the domestic solar policy trade, and Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises (NYSE:BW) is drawing attention around a fresh institutional disclosure. The connective tissue: AI capex is now pulling in materials, power gear, and energy suppliers well beyond the obvious chip names.
AXT is up about 3.1% today, around $79.83, after an Aug. 13 close of $77.45. The catalyst is a sector move. Applied Optoelectronics is up about 5%, Lumentum about 4%, and Corning about 4.5%. AXT makes compound semiconductor substrates, and its indium phosphide wafers are a key input for the high-speed optical transceivers and silicon photonics used in AI data centers. When the optical connectivity trade runs, AXT runs with it as the upstream materials supplier.

It is not often that TSMC (TSM) takes cues from Intel (INTC), but that is undoubtedly what's happening. According to The Information, the world's largest contract chipmaker is quietly building a new packaging technology modeled on Intel's EMIB. TSMC's own engineers are reportedly calling the project "EMIB-like" in-house. The company is developing it with a Taiwanese substrate maker, Kinsus Interconnect Technology. Following the report, TSMC's U.S.-listed shares rose about 8%, while Intel climbed roughly 11% on July 30. For a company that usually defines the industry's direction, TSMC borrowing ideas from Intel is worth a closer look.
The fight is all about how chips get packaged. TSMC's main method, CoWoS, uses a large and expensive silicon layer to link chips together. Intel's EMIB takes a leaner route, embedding tiny silicon bridges only where the chips actually connect. That makes it cheaper and potentially better suited to the increasingly large AI chip designs. The timing makes this sting more for the Taiwanese company. TSMC's CoWoS is sold out into 2027, with some customers waiting well over a year. That backlog is pushing buyers to look for alternate suppliers, and Intel is ready. Its newest version, EMIB-T, recently hit a 98% yield rate, matching CoWoS in that metric, and has already drawn interest from Google (GOOG) (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), and Nvidia (NVDA). Every customer who leaves over the wait chips away at TSMC's lead.

Heartland Value Fund stated the following regarding Photronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:PLAB) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
At the same time, we've been finding plenty of segments of the market where the AI herd hasn't been roaming. In the second quarter, we added to 51 of our existing positions across numerous sectors, including Energy, Financials, Health Care, Communications, Real Estate, and Industrials. When we do buy, we're not simply deploying flows or chasing parts of the market that are making new highs. We are adding exposure in securities that we believe are attractively priced and still represent a good risk/reward balance.
A good example is Photronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:PLAB). Earlier this year, we reduced our stake in PLAB, a leading manufacturer of photomasks that are used to transfer circuit patterns onto semiconductor wafers and flat panel substrates during the fabrication process. The shares more than doubled from December to May, and we felt the stock was getting caught up in the mania surrounding the AI buildout, so we took some money off the table as it reached our price target..." ASMPT Limited (OTC:ASMVY) is one of the fastest-growing high-bandwidth memory stocks to buy. The company sharpened its HBM relevance on June 8, 2026, when it announced a repeat order for eight chip-to-wafer Thermo-Compression Bonding tools from a leading global integrated device manufacturer. ASMPT said the order followed the customer's use of its Firebird TCB tools in high-volume manufacturing since 2024, giving the update more weight than a routine product showcase.
TCB is important in HBM and advanced AI packaging because memory stacks, logic dies, and substrates require precise, high-yield interconnects as chip designs move deeper into 2.5D and 3D integration. The update also fits ASMPT's recent financial momentum. In Q1 2026, revenue rose 32.0% year over year to $507.9 million, while bookings increased 71.6% to $727.0 million. ASMPT remains an equipment supplier rather than a memory producer, but its bonding tools are closely tied to the manufacturing constraints of HBM, AI accelerators, and chiplet-based packaging.

BE Semiconductor Industries N.V. (OTC:BESIY) is one of the fastest-growing high-bandwidth memory stocks to buy. The company strengthened its HBM-adjacent case on June 18, 2026, when it raised its long-term revenue target to €1.7 billion to €2.2 billion from €1.5 billion to €1.9 billion at its 2026 Investor Day. BE Semiconductor tied the higher target to improved order momentum since Q2 2025, rising demand for 2.5D AI-related datacenter and photonics applications, and new hybrid bonding use cases in logic, memory, and co-packaged optics. That is directly relevant to HBM because advanced AI chips increasingly depend on tighter integration between processors, memory stacks, and packaging technologies.
The update also followed a strong Q1 2026, when revenue rose 28.3% year over year to €184.9 million, and orders jumped 104.5%, helped by hybrid bonding, mobile, and photonics demand. BE Semiconductor is not a memory producer, but its bonding tools place it close to the manufacturing bottlenecks behind AI memory and advanced packaging.

Starfish Control Hundreds of Feet Without a Brain. Here's How.

Starfish (aka sea stars) are master climbers. These many-armed invertebrates traverse vertical, horizontal, and even upside-down surfaces: it seems no substrate is too rocky, slimy, sandy, or glassy. And they do so without a centralized nervous system, let alone a brain.
A new paper written by an international team of biologists and engineers reveals that starfish locomotion is nonetheless rather clever, with built-in features that allow starfish to drastically adapt their motion depending on the challenge at hand (or, rather,
