Falkirk have a huge challenge to replicate their top six finish of last season as they rebuild after losing a host of key players, according to Ian McCall.
The Bairns were beaten 2-0 at home to St Mirren in their Premiership opener on Saturday.
Manager John McGlynn has had to contend with the loss this summer of his top five goalscorers from last season – Barney Stewart, Calvin Miller, Dylan Tait, Ben Broggio and Brian Graham.
"It's really hard when you're at the level Falkirk are, a big club but not one of the big, big ones," McCall, who had spells at Falkirk as a player and manager, told BBC Sportsound.
"You're signing a boy [Barmey Stewart] from a university team and then getting a million pounds for him. That's not really normal, but fans will still expect you to go and find another one. You tell me five that have been found in the last 20 years like that - it's not like that.

Northern Ireland Football League [NIFL] chief executive Gerard Lawlor says he hopes to discuss summer football with clubs before Christmas, with a view to a vote over changing the Irish League calendar as soon as the 2028-29 season.
Earlier in the week, Coleraine manager Ruaidhri Higgins said it is "a worry" that Irish Premiership sides will never improve in Europe without a switch to summer football after his side became the third Premiership team to bow out of the qualifiers.
The Irish Premiership currently sits 51st in the Uefa coefficient system and could lose their fourth European spot if Larne, the only Northern Irish team left in the qualifiers, are knocked out before the group stages.
Lawlor has long been an advocate of summer football, something which has long been a discussion point within football in Northern Ireland.
"There will be a vote somewhere," Lawlor told Sportsound on BBC Radio Ulster.

John McGlynn says Falkirk will be given "more respect" in the coming campaign and believes matching last season will be a tall order.
The Bairns followed successive promotions with a top-six finish in their first top-flight season in 15 years.
And McGlynn has been busy on the recruitment front, notably having to replace top scorers Barney Stewart and Calvin Miller, who were sold to West Bromwich Albion and Heart of Midlothian respectively.
"You can't hold them back," McGlynn told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound. "If players see what we're doing here, you've got more chance of attracting players.
"We've still got a bit of work to do. Big football boots to fill.

Scotland's strong midfield will be key to competing with Brazil on Wednesday, but the "sweltering afternoon heat" of Miami could mean a similar outcome to their 1982 meeting in Seville, fears South American football expert Tim Vickery.
The Scots took the lead in 44 years ago only to lose 4-1 but need to avoid a repeat if they are to progress to the knock-out stages for the first time.
Vickery expects Al-Ittihad's Fabinho to start alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta instead of Manchester United's Casemiro, who is on a yellow card and in danger of suspension.
"But central midfield is not their best area," he said of the current Brazil side on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound. "Scotland are quite strong there and can compete.

Referee Ilgiz Tantashev told John McGinn he turned down his claim for a penalty against Morocco because the ball was going out of play as he was challenged by Neil El Aynaoui, the Scotland midfielder's brother, Stephen, has revealed.
Scott McTominay also claimed for penalty under a challenge from midfielder El Aynaoui as Scotland suffered a 1-0 defeat in Boston, but it was his brother's claim that the Falkirk first-team coach thought had more credibility.
"The McTominay one, my gut reaction was he was playing for it," McGinn told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound.
