Stockton 40, Morrison 3: The Blackhawks rolled to a home win after scoring all 40 points in the first half. Stockton (3-1, 2-0 NUIC) has allowed just 11 points its last three games after opening the season wiith a 41-20 setback to El Paso-Gridley.
Polo 70, Milledgeville 14: The Marcos (4-0) rolled in the Battle of the Blacktop game as Mercer Mumford had four rushing TDs and 161 yards. Jordan Reed also threw a TD to Ryder Faivre. Kyson Francis had two rushing scores for the Missiles. Polo led 38-8 after the first quarter.
West Carroll 68, River Ridge 6: The Thunder improved to 3-1 after bouncing back from last week's close loss to Amboy.

Six years after it was banned for its racist overtones, the "Gator Bait" cheer reutrned Saturday in Gainesville for Florida's 2026 college football opener.
The Universitty of Florida's marching band played the cheer in the first quarter of the Gators' Sept. 5 game against Florida Atlantic for the first time since then-president Ken Fuchs banned it at football games in 2020.
Former UF defensive star Lawrence Wright popularized the term in 1995 after a win over rival Florida State when he said, "If you ain't a Gator, ya Gator bait, baby." The phrase caught on with the Florida faithful during the team's run of success under coach Steve Spurrier.
Even though Fuchs acknowledged the cheer itself wasn't racist, he based his decision on the "historic racist imagery **** ociated with the phrase." The Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University said that newspaper articles and imagery from the late 19th and early 20th century depicted African American babies as alligator bait, a term that was also used as a slur for Black people.

At some point, dominance stops being impressive and starts raising a different question: What is left to prove?
The Bulldogs opened the 2026 season Thursday night by doing something that would have been difficult to imagine two years ago: they walked into Pittsburg State, the site of their most recent loss, and dismantled the No. 4 Gorillas, 42-14. The victory extended Ferris State's winning streak to 31 games and immediately reminded the rest of the country why the Bulldogs entered the season ranked No. 1 in Division II.
The significance goes beyond the score.
Pittsburg State handed Ferris its last loss, a 19-3 defeat on Aug. 31, 2024. Since then, Ferris has not simply won; it has crushed opponents on its way to consecutive national championships. Thursday's victory was particularly emphatic, as the Bulldogs ran for 385 yards while holding Pittsburg State to just 44 rushing yards.
The Bulldogs finished 16-0 in 2025, defeating Harding 42-21 for their fourth national championship in five seasons. That made Ferris the first team in the modern era of Division I or Division II football to finish a season 16-0. The Bulldogs also scored 844 points, setting an NCAA Division I and II modern-era scoring record.

For the past three seasons, no Southeastern Conference team has played in the College Football Playoff championship game. It is a sore subject in a league that had previously won four consecutive national ***** les from 2019 through 2022. This season, the SEC could again have a team playing for the championship, as several top teams have returning quarterbacks.
The SEC had eight quarterbacks in the top 19 of The Athletic’s recent rankings, including six who started for their teams last season in No. 1 Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), No. 7 Arch Manning (Texas), No. 11 Gunner Stockton (Georgia), No. 13 Marcel Reed (Texas A&M), No. 16 John Mateer (Oklahoma) and No. 18 LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina). The other two highly-ranked SEC quarterbacks are transfers in No. 8 Sam Leavitt (LSU) and No. 19 Byrum Brown (Auburn).
Chambliss is coming off the best season of any SEC quarterback, as he led the Rebels to the CFP semifinals. Although Chambliss wasn’t supposed to start and came from Division II Ferris State, he took over the starting job in September and threw for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns and ran for 527 yards and eight touchdowns. In three CFP games, he completed 67.9% of his passes for 921 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
In February, a Mississippi judge ruled in Chambliss’s favor, granting him a preliminary injunction in a case against the NCAA and giving him another year of eligibility. After finishing eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting last year, he should contend for the award this year. He will be among the most hyped players this season, especially when Ole Miss on Sept. 19 hosts LSU, whose coach, Lane Kiffin, coached at Ole Miss for six seasons before leaving last November before the CFP began.

Will Gagnon was nearly untouchable for the Tower Buzzers, delivering his finest performance to this point, holding the Giants to just three hits on his way to winning the game with a season-high 10 punchouts.
Striking people out was never an issue for Gagnon this season, but limiting the opposition to no free passes came as a surprise, something he had not done since the middle of May.
Waiting until the eighth inning to score all three runs they would in this game certainly didn't help; nevertheless, the burden of remaining winless this season still falls on the shoulders of Jackson Ferris himself, allowing five runs, four of them earned, in a 7-3 defeat for the Comets.
It is not your day when your leadoff hitter, in this case Alek Thomas, strikes out three times. All the Comets' scoring came from the bat of Ryan Ward with a three-run shot in the eighth inning.

PETOSKEY — Connor Berg and Jace Shaw see a lot of each other at Petoskey football practices.
With Berg along the offensive line and Shaw rushing off the edge of the defensive line, it makes a lot of sense that the two would be quite familiar with each other by now.
Outside of Petoskey, the two have also been well aquatinted this summer.
Both standout football players entering their senior season with the Northmen, Berg and Shaw have been busy hitting camps all across the state, from Central and Western Michigan, to Ferris State and more.
For both players, getting in front of college coaches on the camp tour has been a fun ride.

Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey is mourning the loss of her mother, Jo Wilder, who died at age 94 just one week after learning she had lung cancer. In a heartfelt tribute, Grey revealed that her mother "chose grace over fear" as she decided to face the end of her life on her own terms.
Grey's July 7 Instagram post announcing Wilder's death included a handful of iconic photos of her mother, several of which included the Ferris Bueller's Day Off alum. In the caption of her post, Grey wrote that her mother "was brave and deep."
"My mother, Jo Wilder, passed away on July 4th at 94 — by her own choosing, on her own terms, exactly as she lived," Grey shared.
She continued, "A week earlier, she learned she had lung cancer. True to who she was, she chose grace over fear, understanding that leaving this world with dignity is an honor, not a tragedy."
Before becoming a mother, Wilder had aspirations to be an actress, working in theater in New York, Grey explained. While raising Grey and her brother, Wilder pursued passions including becoming "a lifelong activist, fiercely attuned to right and wrong."

Josue De Paula reached base five times for Tulsa, including two singles, two walks, and a solo home run.
De Paula, who also stole his 19th base of the season, already has a career-high with 33 extra-base hits this year despite playing in only 60 games so far. He’s followed up his Texas League player of the month honors in May by hitting .373/.467/.647 in the first two weeks of June.
Three runs in the fifth inning spoiled the Comets’ interleague series finale in a road loss to the Charlotte Knights (White Sox). Jackson Ferris struck out six in his 4 1/3 innings, but those three runs in the fifth gave him four runs (three earned) allowed in the game to suffer the loss.
James Tibbs III doubled and drove in two of Oklahoma City’s three runs.
