Abhishek Sharma's struggles in T20Is have come under renewed focus following another disappointing series against Zimbabwe, with former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth calling on the selectors to make a difficult decision if the opener's poor run continues.
The left-handed batter endured a forgettable three-match series, failing to register a double-digit score. His recent numbers have also become a concern, with Abhishek unable to cross 20 in each of his last six T20I innings. Since India's T20 World Cup triumph, he has managed just one half-century, putting his place in the side under the scanner as competition for the opening spot continues to grow.
The debate has intensified further after Sanju Samson, India's Player of the Tournament during the T20 World Cup-winning campaign, was left out of the Zimbabwe series despite his impressive performances. With several opening options available, Abhishek's extended lean spell has only added to the pressure on the ICC's former top-ranked T20I batter.
Reacting to the opener's dip in form, Srikkanth said rival teams have worked out a way to contain Abhishek and believes the selection panel may soon have to make a bold call. He also expressed confidence that Samson would return to the Indian setup.
"Abhishek Sharma has been sorted out (by opponents) in international cricket, right from the World Cup. I think a tough call has to be taken against him now. I feel Sanju will get his chance again now. He will receive a call back 100%. The selectors will have to take a tough call," he said in a video on his YouTube channel.
While Abhishek's form emerged as a talking point, India also found plenty to celebrate through the return of Mayank Yadav. The fast bowler made his comeback after a lengthy injury break, featuring in his first international match since October 2024.
Mayank made an immediate impact by claiming two wickets in the opening T20I before ending the series with a three-wicket haul in the final game. Bowling with genuine pace throughout the tour, he consistently troubled Zimbabwe's batting line-up and looked close to his best.
Srikkanth was delighted to see the pacer complete all three matches without any fitness concerns and urged the team management to continue investing in young talent.

"It was good to see Mayank Yadav playing all three games. So happy for him. Look at how consistent this boy was. The Indian future is very good. You have to back the right youngsters. I don't mind Ashok Sharma either," he said.

After the bruising their T20 side endured on the UK tour, this Zimbabwe series could be just the ideal fillip India needed.
Having finally recorded their maiden win under new T20 captain Shreyas Iyer after seven winless matches at the helm, India will look to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead when they take on Zimbabwe in the second T20I at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday.
Following a difficult run that saw them whitewashed by Ireland (0-2) and England (0-4), India's convincing sevenwicket victory in the seriesopener has restored some much-needed confidence.
Yet, even as the visitors look to build on that momentum, one player who will be under the scanner is explosive opener Abhishek Sharma.
Two years ago, Harare was the venue where Abhishek announced himself on the international stage with a breathtaking maiden T20I hundred in only his second game.
The stylish left-hander returns to the same ground searching for a spark after a worrying dip in form. Having begun the England series promisingly with scores of 59 and 43, Abhishek's returns thereafter have read 10, 16, 3 and 1. In Thursday's opener, his uncomfortable eight-ball 1 suggested a batter short on rhythm and confidence.
With competition for places intensifying, Abhishek knows he needs runs. Senior opener Sanju Samson, though absent on this tour, remains in the selectors' plans and has been named in India's squad for the Asian Games later this year. A substantial score in Harare would not only help India seal the series but also strengthen Abhishek's own case in a rapidly evolving T20 setup.
India, though, found a new hero in the opening match.
Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed a stunning 18-ball fifty, becoming the youngest player to score a T20I half-century.
The 15-year-old, who had endured a difficult England tour where pacy bowlers like Jofra Archer tested him relentlessly with short-pitched bowling, responded in style against Zimbabwe.
Taking on Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani fearlessly, he produced a blistering innings that underlined why he is so highly rated.
Supported by Ishan Kishan's brisk 35 and an unbeaten 28 from skipper Iyer, Sooryavanshi ensured India chased down the target with more than six overs to spare.
Head coach VVS Laxman would have been equally pleased by the performance of India's revamped pace attack. The biggest positive was the return of Mayank Yadav, who made an impressive comeback after two injury-ravaged years. The Delhi quick finished with figures of 2 for 18 and consistently touched high speeds, with his opening delivery to Brian Bennett at 150 kmph indidcating that his pace remains intact.
Prince Yadav also showed signs of improvement after a lean England tour, while debutant Ashok Sharma displayed enough promise to suggest he could become another exciting fast-bowling option.

Mayank Yadav's return to international cricket could hardly have gone better, and former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the young fast bowler deserves patience after overcoming a difficult spell with injuries.
Playing his first international match since October 2024, Mayank announced his comeback in style during the opening T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare. The speedster was named Player of the Match after producing a match-winning spell that began with a wicket off the very first ball of the contest.
Mayank removed Brian Bennett for a duck with a hard-length delivery that straightened after pitching, forcing an outside edge that was safely taken behind the stumps. He continued to test Zimbabwe's batters with his pace and discipline, dismissing Dion Myers during the powerplay to leave the hosts under immediate pressure. His spell laid the platform for India's commanding bowling display.
The performance marked a significant moment in the pacer's career after an injury-plagued period stalled his rapid rise. Initially fast-tracked into the Indian side as part of the team's long-term plans for the 2026 T20 World Cup, Mayank spent the past two years battling recurring fitness issues that repeatedly interrupted his progress.
Speaking on 'Ash ki Baat', Ashwin reflected on the challenges of returning from multiple injuries and urged fans to avoid judging players too quickly.
"It is not easy to go through a stress fracture at a young age. We often see and think, why is he always retained? He is always injured. We easily tell this. No player plays to get injured. Injury can be very painful. It is not just physical but also a mental barrier, especially if you are injured twice. It is not easy on the body. If it resurfaces, it plays on your mind. Mayank Yadav has a lot of time and is exceptionally talented. I want him to play more," he said on 'Ash ki Baat'.
Ashwin also acknowledged India's convincing start to the series and congratulated new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer on securing his maiden victory as skipper.
"Congratulations to Shreyas for the first win. He would have been searching for it. There is not a lot to see when you restrict Zimbabwe to 120-odd. Mayank, Prince, and Ashok all got an opportunity," he said.
Mayank's impressive return has not only revived India's pace options but also reinforced why he continues to be viewed as one of the country's most exciting fast-bowling prospects when fully fit.

NEW DELHI: India fast bowler Ashok Sharma described his international debut as a "dream come true" after receiving his maiden India cap ahead of the opening T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday, dedicating the emotional milestone to his elder brother whose sacrifice helped shape his cricketing journey.
The 24-year-old Rajasthan pacer was handed his India cap by bowling coach Sunil Joshi before the toss, capping a remarkable rise from domestic cricket to the international stage. Although Ashok finished with figures of 0/29 in four overs, India secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Overcome with emotion after the cap presentation, Ashok reflected on years of hard work finally paying off.
"It's very special. The thing for which I was working hard, hopefully today it's fulfilled. It's a dream. Till now it's a dream, sir, whatever it was. Even now it's a dream that I wore the cap of India, and my dream has come true," he said.
The young pacer then revealed the person he wanted to honour the most.
"I dedicate this moment to my elder brother," he added.
Ashok's story is one of perseverance and family sacrifice.
Growing up in Rampura, a small village near Jaipur, he shared a passion for cricket with his elder brother, Akshay Sharma, who also played the game. However, financial constraints meant the family could not afford to support both sons in pursuing cricket.
Akshay made the difficult decision to put aside his own ambitions so Ashok could attend inter-district Under-16 trials. That selfless act became the turning point in Ashok's career.
Years later, the youngster who once struggled for opportunities has now become India's newest fast-bowling prospect.
Before presenting the India cap, stand-in head coach VVS Laxman reminded Ashok of the significance of representing the country.
"We know Ashok is going to make his international debut, and we discussed that it's a matter of great honour," he said.
Laxman also acknowledged the effort behind the achievement.
"Representing the country, all your hard work, and all your performances were rewarded by this opportunity," he added.
Ashok's rise has been rapid over the past year.
After finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 22 wickets, he earned an IPL contract with Gujarat ******* ans, where he grabbed headlines by clocking 154.2 kmph — the fastest delivery of IPL 2026.
Earlier in his journey, he almost walked away from cricket before a chance appearance at the Red Bull Speedster competition opened the doors to becoming a Rajasthan Royals net bowler, eventually paving the way for his domestic breakthrough.
Though he went wicketless on debut against Zimbabwe, Ashok consistently hit a lively pace and showcased the attributes that earned him national selection.

India finally ended their seven-match winless run under captain Shreyas Iyer, defeating Zimbabwe by seven wickets in the first T20I at Harare on Thursday. The match also witnessed teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi script history by becoming the youngest player to score a T20I half-century.
After winning the toss, Iyer opted to bowl first, and India's pace attack justified the decision with a clinical performance.
Returning to international cricket for the first time since October 2024 after recovering from a stress fracture, Mayank Yadav made an immediate impact. The express pacer dismissed Brian Bennett with the very first ball of the match before removing Dion Myers, consistently clocking speeds in excess of 145 kmph.
Zimbabwe were reduced to 26/3 inside the powerplay and slipped further to 32/4 after Shivam Dube dismissed captain Sikandar Raza.
A fighting partnership between Wessly Madhevere (39) and Ryan Burl (26), along with an unbeaten 27 off 20 from Tadiwanashe Marumani, helped the hosts recover to 125/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Debutant Ashok Sharma recovered well after an expensive first over, while Ravi Bishnoi bowled economically to finish with 1/24.
Chasing 126, India suffered an early setback when Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for just 1. However, it proved to be Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's day.
The 15-year-old prodigy unleashed a breathtaking ****** ault, smashing 50 off just 19 ****** with four fours and four sixes. In the process, he became the youngest player ever to score a T20I half-century, putting India firmly in control of the chase before falling immediately after reaching his milestone.
Captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with an unbeaten 28 off 24 ****** , while Ishan Kishan chipped in with a quick 35 off 24. Tilak Varma struck the winning runs as India completed the chase comfortably with seven wickets in hand.
For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, dismissing Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, while Richard Ngarava claimed the prized scalp of Sooryavanshi.
The victory marked Shreyas Iyer's first win as India's T20I captain, ending a frustrating seven-match winless streak that included the tours of Ireland and England, while Sooryavanshi's record-breaking knock stole the headlines in Harare.

India fast bowler Ashok Sharma has described receiving his maiden senior national team call-up as the fulfilment of a long-standing dream, with the youngster now hoping to make his international debut during the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe.
India will take on Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series in Harare from July 23 to 26, and Ashok is among the uncapped players in contention to earn his first cap. Ahead of the tour, the pacer said wearing the India jersey has always been his biggest ambition.
"My first target will be to wear the India jersey. I am waiting for that moment to wear that jersey and represent my nation. I have waited for this for a long time. So that will be the first thing. The second thing is that I will keep doing what I know best. Whatever I have done till now- the hard work in domestic cricket, the preparation and the routines- I will just keep following that. I will stick to my strengths and not try anything extra," he told Jio Star.
The 23-year-old also outlined his immediate objectives for the Zimbabwe series, saying he wants to make the most of the opportunity if he gets a place in the playing XI. Ashok added that performing well in the shortest format could help him move closer to another dream of representing India in Test cricket.
"Now that I am in the squad for the series against Zimbabwe, my next target will be to take as many wickets as possible and try to play as many matches as I can. I want to make this opportunity count. My next goal after that will be to play red-ball cricket for India as soon as possible," he added.
Ashok's selection comes after he was part of the India A squad for the tour of Sri Lanka in June. He joined the squad as a replacement after pacer Yudhvir Singh sustained an injury while fielding, giving him the chance to gain experience with the national development side.
The right-arm pacer also revealed the cricketer who has shaped his approach to fast bowling the most, identifying former South Africa speedster Dale Steyn as his biggest inspiration.
"Dale Steyn is a bowler who is a match-winner in himself. On his day, when his bowling was on point, he could win matches single-handedly. He could take the game away from the opposition in a matter of a few overs," he said.
Explaining what he admires about the legendary fast bowler, Ashok said Steyn's attitude and methods have had a lasting impact on him.
"I follow him in terms of his aggression, his run-up, his intensity and the way he used to set up batters. Everything about him is inspiring. He is someone I look up to as a fast bowler," he added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced two changes to India's squads for the upcoming series of England and Zimbabwe after injuries to Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy.

Chakravarthy also struggled for form in England, taking just one wicket while conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.28.

India batter Ajinkya Rahane expressed disbelief regarding Sanju Samson’s omission from India’s T20I squad for the Zimbabwe tour. He expressed surprise and hoped that the selectors had communicated the decision to him.
Rahane took to Instagram and posted a story throwing his weight behind Samson, saying he expected the wicketkeeper-batter to return to the national side soon.
"Hope there has been some communication with Samson. Find it odd that the hero of our recent T20 WC win has been left out of the T20 squad to Zimbabwe. Hope to see him back in the team soon," Rahane wrote on his Instagram Story.
The veteran shared his remarks following the announcement of India’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, which marked Samson’s absence.
The 31-year-old was omitted despite his significant contribution to India’s successful ICC T20 World Cup campaign.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced a 15-member squad for the Zimbabwe tour, with Prabhsimran Singh and Yash Thakur earning their maiden India call-ups.
The T20I series will commence on July 23, with all three matches scheduled to be played in Harare. The team will take the field under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. Tilak Varma, on the other hand, will be the vice-captain.
Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who replaced Samson in the second T20I against England, keeps his spot.

NEW DELHI: World Cup-winning wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was on Monday left out of India's squad for the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe later this month after a poor run of form.
The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, announced a 15-member squad with Shreyas Iyer as captain. Teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi retained his place after making his international debut against England.
Fast bowlers Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur received their maiden India call-ups, while Punjab wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh also earned his first senior national team selection.
India will play three T20Is against Zimbabwe in Harare on July 23, 25 and 27.
Samson's omission comes after a disappointing run with the bat.
The Kerala wicketkeeper was dropped from India's playing XI for the second T20I against England after scoring just one run off seven ****** in the series opener at Durham.
Before that, he managed scores of 0 and 5 in the two-match T20I series against Ireland.
Despite playing a key role in India's recent T20 World Cup triumph and winning the Player of the Tournament award, Samson failed to build on that success and has now lost his place in the squad.
The selectors rewarded three players with their first senior India call-ups.
Rajasthan pacer Ashok, who was recently drafted into the India A squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka, has now been included in the T20I squad.

Yash Thakur also earned his maiden call-up after impressive domestic performances.
Punjab wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran also received his maiden call-up after impressive performances in domestic circuit and IPL.
Express pacer Mayank Yadav also returned to the national squad for the first time since 2024.

TimesofIndia.com in Lucknow: A day after switching his domestic allegiance from Rajasthan to Gujarat, fast bowler Ashok Sharma has been drafted into the India A squad in Sri Lanka as an injury replacement. The 23-year-old pacer replaces injured Yudhvir Singh.
Ashok will fly to Colombo on Tuesday morning before linking up with the squad in Dambulla, where the tri-series featuring India A, Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A is being played.
Led by Tilak Varma, India A suffered a narrow defeat against the hosts on Monday and will now face Afghanistan A in a must-win clash on June 17.
Ashok grabbed attention during the Indian Premier League with his raw pace. He picked up six wickets in as many matches and is highly rated by the management of Gujarat ******* ans, who signed him for ?90 lakh at the auction.
TimesofIndia.com understands that Ashok's ability to bowl at 150 kph while disguising a 115-kph slower delivery with the same action has particularly impressed Gujarat ******* ans captain Shubman Gill.
The young speedster first burst into the spotlight with his express pace. He broke an 11-year-old record in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and finished as the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 22 wickets.
Ashok secured his first IPL contract in 2022 when Kolkata Knight Riders signed him for ?55 lakh. He was later released and spent a season as a net bowler with Rajasthan Royals. At the 2025 mega auction, Rajasthan Royals bought him for his base price of ?30 lakh but released him again without giving him a game.
Despite the setbacks, one thing remained constant: the advice he received from Australian captain Pat ******* mins during his time with Kolkata Knight Riders.
"I never thought about slowing down. I just wanted to maintain my pace and hit the right lengths. In 2022, I spent a lot of time with Pat ******* mins," Ashok had told TimesofIndia.com earlier this year.
"I spoke to him about lengths and what I could do better. He asked me a simple question: 'What is your strength?' Every bowler has one. Some swing it, some seam it. He asked me what I felt my strength was. I told him I could hit a hard length at good pace. He told me to stick to that. Whenever I practise, I remember his words. They still echo in my ears."
Ashok now has an opportunity to impress the selectors with his pace and control in the India A setup. There is still no proper road connecting his village, Rampura, located about 35 kilometres from Jaipur, to the outside world. But the young fast bowler's journey is moving in the right direction, and he is edging closer to his destination.

JAIPUR: In a major setback for Rajasthan cricket, promising pace bowler Ashok Sharma has decided to represent Gujarat in domestic cricket from the next season. The departure hurts even more as Rajasthan’s premium pace battery, featuring Deepak Chahar, Khaleel Ahmed and Aniket Choudhary, is heavily depleted.
Frequent injuries to Deepak and Khaleel have left 36-year-old Aniket as the lone mainstay, and the aging domestic stalwart is likely playing his last upcoming domestic season.
Right-arm pacer Ashok, who played for Gujarat ***** ans in the recently concluded IPL 2026 and gained a lot of praise for his raw pace, cited better opportunities as the reason for the move. “For better opportunities I decided to move to Gujarat,” Ashok told TOI.
The Rajasthan Cricket ***** ociation (RCA) has granted him a No Objection Certificate (NOC).
Ashok made his senior debut for Rajasthan in Dec last season. In four First Class matches, he picked up 14 wickets. He was particularly effective in white-ball cricket, claiming 22 wickets in 16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 games and 13 wickets in seven Vijay Hazare Trophy one-dayers.
In another blow to the state’s bowling stocks, pacer Ganesh Suthar, who had an outstanding Under-23 season last year, has decided to play for Haryana and has received an NOC from RCA.
Ganesh was the sixth-highest wicket-taker in the CK Nayudu Trophy in 2025-26, bagging 37 wickets in just eight matches. A source revealed that he, too, chose to move out in search of better opportunities.
