There wasn't a lot of drama along the FedEx Cup bubble during last year's BMW Championship or last week's start to the 2026 FedEx Cup playoffs. But the 2026 BMW Championship leaderboard after Round 2 action on Friday, August 21, is setting up for a potential shake up in the race for the final few spots in next week's Tour Championship.
Strong performances by Gary Woodland, Patrick Cantlay and Michael Thorbjornsen through the opening two rounds at the second FedEx Cup playoff event have positioned them to possibly move inside the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings after beginning tournament play Thursday on the outside looking in for qualification at East Lake.
Only the top-30 golfers get a spot at the Tour Championship. Last year, only Harry Hall moved from outside the top 30 to qualify for the Tour Championship during the BMW Championship. A Tour Championship berth comes with a two-year PGA Tour exemption. Players in the field this week already locked up spots in 2027 signature events by being inside the top 50.

Michael Thorbjornsen didn't want to be left behind.
The 24-year-old has been a PGA Tour pro for more than two years, but last month he had one of the biggest eye-opening moments of his career. Jackson Koivun, a 21-year-old phenom, won in his third professional start, holding off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to take the trophy at the 3M Open. For a majority of the PGA Tour, it was a reminder that the young kids are good, and they're coming for the top.
For Thorbjornsen, it was a wake-up call.
"Comparison is a thief of joy, but it has helped me and hurt me at times when I see other people having success and doing well when I know I can compete with them," Thorbjornsen said. "When Koivun won, that was a big motivating factor."
Thorbjornsen and Koivun are both graduates of PGA Tour University, a program designed to give the top collegiate players direct access to the PGA Tour. PGA Tour U started as an idea on a sheet of paper back in 2018. Now, it has become one of the most essential pipelines to the Tour, and in recent weeks has shown it belongs even in the new professional golf ecosystem with numerous victories from alums.

Michael Thorbjornsen has claimed a superb maiden win on the PGA Tour after triumphing at the Rocket Classic.
On his 65th PGA Tour start, the 24-year-old secured his first win with a two-shot victory over fellow American Xander Schauffele.
Detroit Golf Club played host to the tournament, where the champion carded four rounds under 70 to finish on 18-under.
His immediate plans have now emerged following the ******* le, with Thorbjornsen taking the opposite approach to recent fellow first-time winner Jackson Koivun.
Immediately after winning the Rocket Classic, Thorbjornsen has decided to withdraw from this week's event.

Trevor Immelman has suggested that he was so impressed by Michael Thorbjornsen hitting all but one of the greens in regulation during the final round of the Rocket Classic on his way to securing his first PGA Tour victory.
Thorbjornsen almost seemed to sneak up on those leading the way for the majority of the week at Detroit Golf Club.
The 24-year-old went into the final round in Michigan in a tie for seventh. And there was little indication of the fireworks to come when he reached the turn on Sunday at two under par for the day.
However, Thorbjornsen made five birdies on the back nine to win by two over Xander Schauffele.
The youngster was second in the field for strokes gained approach on Sunday, as he gained more than 3.4 shots.

Just hours after winning the Rocket Classic in Detroit for his first PGA Tour victory, Michael Thorbjornsen withdrew from the Wyndham Championship on Sunday night.
The 24-year-old Stanford alum shot a career-low 63 in the final round to erase a four-stroke deficit at the start of the day and get into the winner's circle in his 65th career Tour start. The 500 FedEx Cup points lifted him from No. 69 in the season-long standings and just inside the cut-off line for the playoffs to No. 31 and safely into the BMW Championship.
Thorbjornsen had played four of the last five Tour events. It's the age-old dilemma: rest or ride the momentum? Thorbjornsen opted to celebrate his achievement and gear up for making a playoff run.
The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will qualify for the first event of the playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship (Aug. 13-16). The top 50 advance to the next week and the BMW Championship at Bellerive in St. Louis; the top 30 make it to East Lake in Atlanta for the Tour Championship.
Thorbjornsen's withdrawal is good news for at least one player: Justin Lower, the first alternate, is officially in the field and needs a win to have any shot at the playoffs. He's No. 174 in the FedEx Cup.

The First Coast and Georgia's Golden Isles will be sending a sizable contingent of players to the 154th Open Championship, July 16-19 at Royal Birkdale, in Southport, England.
The group is led by three past champions: Jacksonville native David Duval (2001, Royal Lytham and St. Annes), Cameron Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach (2022, St. Andrews) and Brian Harman of St. Simons Island, Ga. (2023, Royal Liverpool).
Duval, now with the PGA Tour Champions, will make his 25th start in the Open, and his first since 2022. Harman, Harris English of St. Simons Island and Billy Horschel of Ponte Vedra Beach are all making their 11th starts in golf's oldest championship.
At the other end of the experience spectrum will be Nease graduate Marcus Plunkett, who has been playing on the Asian Tour, Michael Brennan of Jacksonville and Michael Thorbjornsen of Jacksonville. They are playing in their first British Open and in Plunkett's case, his first major.

The 2026 Genesis Scottish Open is far from over.
Dense fog rolled over the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, on Saturday, forcing two separate suspensions in play. Most players in contention will have to return to the golf course early Sunday morning, as the second round resumes at 7 a.m. local time (2 a.m. ET). Then, the final round will commence.
World No. 4 Matt Fitzpatrick was tied at the top of the leaderboard with Michael Thorbjornsen when play was suspended Saturday, but there are dozens still within striking distance, including defending champ Chris Gotterup, reigning U.S. Open champ Wyndham Clark and crowd-favorite Robert MacIntyre, who's looking to win his native national open for the second time in three years.

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland (AP) — The notorious Scottish haar off the North Sea brought two fog delays Saturday, leaving Matt Fitzpatrick and Michael Thorbjornsen atop the leaderboard with a long final day ahead to finish the Scottish Open and move south to England for the final major of the year.
Thorbjornsen birdied his last two holes to reach 11-under par through 13 holes, while Fitzpatrick missed the green on No. 8 and failed to save par before play was stopped.
At stake Sunday for Thorbjornsen and perhaps a dozen other players is getting one of three spots left for the British Open for leading finishers not already exempt.
The third round was scheduled to resume at 7 a.m., followed by the final round of threesomes off the first tee. Given the extended summer daylight, finishing is not expected to be an issue.
Sorting out the contenders, however, was as unpredictable as the weather.
