A stock can look very different six months after purchase, especially when its price has fallen way below the original entry point.
Most investors hold on, waiting for the price to recover rather than locking in a loss. A pattern one of the most successful investors alive says causes lasting financial damage.
In his 2024 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, Warren Buffett identified a behavioral pattern he called "the cardinal sin" of managing a business.
His late partner, Charlie Munger, had a blunter label for the habit of sitting on known problems and hoping they disappear on their own: "thumb-sucking."
Buffett's candor in the 2024 Berkshire Hathaway annual letter went beyond a single line about thumb-sucking.

Chipmaker Qualcomm (QCOM) will report its third quarter earnings on Wednesday, giving investors a closer look at the impact the global memory shortage is having on smartphone sales and the status of the company's upcoming data center segment.
Qualcomm is working to diversify its business to reduce its dependence on its handset business, which has slowed over the years, as customers hold on to their phones for longer before upgrading.
And with smartphone makers increasing prices to offset the rising cost of memory and storage chips caused by the global AI build-out, the handset market is looking rough.
"The smartphone industry is not great," Bernstein ***** yst Stacy Rasgon told Yahoo Finance's Julie Hyman on Wednesday.
"Memory prices are going up, and AI is sort of sucking up a lot of the supply. And so it's just not leaving a lot for the smartphone players. And we're seeing unit growth has gone negative," he added.

It's still hot outside, the kids are still out of school, and fall camp has yet to open. However now that we are in single-digit weeks until the college football season begins, it's about that time of year that the national press starts sucking up to Deion Sanders. Oh yeah. And time we start previewing Alabama Crimson Tide football. We begin with opponent previews.
Due to the buffoonery of the College Football Playoff Committee and the expansion to nine SEC game dockets, Alabama made a decision to cancel an intriguing series with West Virginia in favor of a higher calorie cupcake ECU. The Pirates had a fine season in 2025. However, a closer look shows problems in Greenville.
Coach: Blake Harrell (14–5, 10-3 AAC after a season and a half)
2025 record: 9-4 (6-2 in AAC, 4th in the conference, Military Bowl win over Pitt)
Looking back: Harrell became interim head coach after Mike Houston's firing following week 7 of the 2024 season and finished with a 5-1 record including a bowl win over big brother NC State. Last fall, he led the Pirates to a strong 9-4 season in the competitive AAC and added a second bowl win to his resume.

Renowned investor Cathie Wood positioned Bitcoin as a "wealth insurance policy" on Saturday that AI-driven growth investments cannot provide.
In an X post, Wood argued that capital outflows from "less stable countries" will light a "fire" under Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
The Ark Invest founder said that while AI has initiated a "technology revolution," it cannot serve as the "insurance policy" for wealth protection that many investors are currently seeking.
Capital outflows from less stable countries around the world will light another fire under bitcoin and other digital ****** ets. AI has launched a technology revolution, deservedly sucking a lot of oxygen out of the investment world, but it cannot serve as the insurance policy… https://t.co/Xmtt1DnroX

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has spent a surprising amount of time talking about a lollipop in the past 24 hours.
That would be the lollipop of Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. who was seen on camera sucking on the sweet during Monday's 5-3 loss against the Detroit Tigers.
Does that constitute a scandal? Probably not. However, Boone certainly didn't seem happy about it while speaking on "Talkin' Yanks" the next day. The manager revealed he spoke to Chisholm about the lollipop after the game and said it won't happen again:
"Oh yeah, that ***** me off. I didn't know about it until after the game. So he and I talked about that. That won't be going on."
He was then told this wasn't the first time Chisholm had taken the field with a lollipop, as he previously took an at-bat with one against the Boston Red Sox. At that point, Boone held off on further comment:

• Tech is dominating ETF flows in a way that's hard to ignore. Since the March 30 low, tech ETFs have pulled in $27 billion as of recording, while every other sector combined has seen net outflows. What’s more, semiconductors are now larger than the entire defensive sector, with tech making up nearly 40% of the S&P 500.
• Vanguard's VOO has officially crossed $1 trillion to overtake SPY as the largest S&P 500 ETF. The Zoo crew discussed the milestone, crediting structural advantages like dividend reinvestment and lower costs, for VOO’s consistent gains. It’s a clear signal that despite active innovation and investor interest, passive, low-cost investing will always win the day.
• Bitcoin is losing the attention war to AI, but it's not a traditional crypto winter. Without a major crisis like FTX to blame, the group largely agreed that AI is simply sucking the oxygen out of the room, leaving Bitcoin and Ethereum looking boring by comparison while niche tokens like Hyperliquid hit new highs.
