Round two of the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 began on Sunday with two Elite Group B sides in early trouble, and each was pulled back into its match by a batter who stayed at the crease.
Karnataka were struggling against Saurashtra at the Alur ground in Bengaluru, while Punjab were reduced to 69 for 3 against Chhattisgarh in New Chandigarh. Manvanth ******* ar delivered the bigger surprise.
The 22-year-old left-hander was playing only his second first-class match, yet he walked in with Karnataka eight down and hit 135 from number nine. Uday Saharan, the Punjab captain, was steadier but just as important, as he finished the first day unbeaten on 106.
Both matches are scheduled to run until Tuesday, October 21, and both innings have already changed the shape of the games. Karnataka were bowled out for 342 on the second day, while Punjab ended the first day on 269 for 4, a long way from where they stood early on.

Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) and TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE) are making major moves in Sub-Saharan Africa, underscored by Chevron's August 17 announcement of a significant oil and gas condensate discovery in offshore Angola's Block 0. The 105-4X exploration well in the Lower Congo Basin encountered over 600 meters of column with 90 meters of net pay in the primary Pinda reservoir. Operated by Chevron's subsidiary CABGOC (39.2% interest) alongside Sonangol E&P, Azule Energy, and TotalEnergies, the ****** et will likely be tied back to nearby existing infrastructure for low-cost production. The discovery highlights Chevron's broader Sub-Saharan push, which generates ~300k boed net and includes recent additions in Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, and Angola's Blocks 49, 50, 33, and 14/23, alongside the upcoming Nabba-1X well in Namibia.

Looking at Q2 2026 financial metrics, both energy giants posted robust results, but Chevron outperformed TotalEnergies across absolute top- and bottom-line figures as well as capital efficiency.
Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) generated $70.1 billion in revenue and reported net income of $12.1 billion ($6.11 per share), with adjusted earnings hitting $12.0 billion. Driven by record production of 4.07 million boed (up 20% year-over-year) and strong refining throughput, Chevron produced an impressive $22.6 billion in operating cash flow and $18.1 billion in free cash flow, delivering a return on capital employed (ROCE) of 21.4%.
TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE) also delivered solid top-line cash generation but came in lower in net profitability. Leveraging higher commodity prices during the Middle East conflict, TotalEnergies generated $9.8 billion in cash flow and $6.0 billion in adjusted net income for Q2 2026, with oil and gas production averaging 2.395 Mboe/d. Its Exploration & Production unit posted $3.2 billion in adjusted net operating income and $5.8 billion in cash flow, while Downstream contributed $2.9 billion in cash flow and Integrated Power generated $700 million. Both energy majors maintain strong, identical balance-sheet leverage, with each firm posting a net debt gearing ratio of 13.1% at the close of Q2. Overall, Chevron leads in total profitability, cash flow generation, and return on capital, making it the stronger financial performer this quarter.

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar (AP) — The idea was unique for sub-Saharan Africa: Use cable cars to lift thousands of commuters above the daily gridlock in one of Africa's fast-growing cities.
But the system ran for only a few weeks, and now the car-less cables hang unused above Madagascar 's capital in what might be a $170 million mistake by one of the world's poorest countries.
The cable car system in Antananarivo was promoted and inaugurated by former President Andry Rajoelina before he was deposed in a military coup late last year following youth-led protests alleging widespread government failures.
He reasoned it was the best way to end the reliance on aging, overcrowded minibus taxis that create traffic jams stretching for hours, an annoyance for many in the island nation off east Africa. Light rail wouldn't work because of the area's marshlands, he said.
"Antananarivo was built for 300,000 inhabitants. Now there are three million of us," Rajoelina said when the cable cars were unveiled in 2024.

CEUTA, Spain, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Hundreds of migrants set up camp on a beach in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta on Monday as local authorities struggled to cope with the thousands still in the tiny territory after a massive border rush last week.
Spain estimates that about 69,500 migrants have returned to Morocco over the past four days, exceeding initial estimates of around 50,000 arrivals in Ceuta on Thursday. The official death toll on the Spanish side of the border stands at 72, with 11 deaths on the Moroccan side.
Many said they left as shop closures had left them without food, they encountered hostility from locals and they were unable to travel on to the Spanish mainland.
Ceuta and Spain's other North African enclave, Melilla, sit on Morocco's Mediterranean coast and periodically face attempted crossings by migrants seeking to reach Europe.
Reuters video showed scores of migrants, most of them from sub-Saharan Africa, lying on the sand of El Trampolin beach. Many were wrapped in towels to shield from the wind, while army and police vehicles patrolled the road behind them.

Triathlete Mohamed Lahna has competed in three Paralympics, winning a bronze medal for Morocco in 2016 and a silver medal for the United States in 2024. He's no stranger to extreme endurance events, either, having swum the Strait of Gibraltar and completed the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara Desert.
But on July 29 in Los Angeles, Lahna crossed a finish line and into unprecedented territory when he completed a cross-country triathlon that he started on June 13 in New York.
The 44-year-old, who was born without a right femur, is believed to be the first athlete with a prosthesis to complete a triathlon across the United States.
Lahna traveled through 16 states and covered a total of 3,300 miles – equivalent to completing 206 Paralympic sprint triathlons or more than 23 Ironman triathlons. For 47 consecutive days, he rose at 4:30 a.m. and battled persistent pain, extreme weather and tough terrain.
Why put himself through that?

African countries must open up their power markets in order to court the private investors needed to supply the electricity that AI will demand, a data center executive told Semafor, as a new report warned the continent risks seeing little economic benefit from the technology.
Africa's economy is barely expanding on a per capita basis, and household living standards are stagnant across the continent. With the labor force projected to almost double by 2050, many African governments fear growing unemployment in the next few years. AI, as in other parts of the world, offers an opportunity to drive economic growth. But Africa only hosts about 160 data centers — around 5.5% of the global total — and aging grids in many African countries mean access to power, the key driver of AI infrastructure expansion, is limited.
In Africa, independent power producers typically sell electricity to state utilities under long‑term power purchase agreements. But private‑to‑private supply — in which a private generator sells directly to an industrial or commercial buyer using the grid, a practice that is commonplace across the West — remains rare on the continent.
In an interview, Robert Skjødt, CEO of Raxio, a data center company that operates in six African countries, said that in many nations, regulatory reform was needed to "allow a private supplier of electricity to supply to a private buyer" while using the grid.
The potential upside is significant: The International Monetary Fund, in a paper published on Tuesday, said AI could make sub-Saharan Africa's economy around 4% bigger over the next decade than its baseline projection — but that requires better electricity supply, internet access, and digital skills. Policymakers and business leaders have long warned that Africa's power shortfall in particular, if left unaddressed, would starve energy-hungry data centers of the electricity needed to digitize economies.

ETF.com President & Director of Research Dave Nadig grabbed some time with John Montgomery, Founder, CEO, and PM at Bridgeway Capital Management, while at the 2026 ICI ETF Conference. Their discussion covered everything from contrarian investing and walking the talk to the company's 50% donation of profits to charities since its inception in the early '90s.
John Montgomery has been running Bridgeway for over three decades, with a simple pitch: deep quantitative research, a focus on smaller, less-liquid stocks that bigger competitors can't touch, and a lean team where everyone knows everyone. But the real differentiator isn't the strategy but instead the why. Bridgeway funnels a share of its profits into a foundation focused on ending genocide and preventing war atrocities, working in sub-Saharan Africa and Ukraine. It's not a marketing gimmick either but instead is baked into the culture from the board room down.
The firm's move from mutual funds to ETFs is its own case study in doing things the hard way for the right reasons. Rather than sidestep the pain with a cheaper clone or share-class workaround, Bridgeway fully converted several strategies, eating short-term costs for long-term tax efficiency and lower fees. Montgomery's philosophy is if a painful transition is coming, do it early and don't wait until you're the last holdout. However, Bridgeway isn't trying to be a trailblazer either in that regard, instead waiting for at least some of the infrastructure to get built by others and jumping in once the operational kinks are worked out.
On the investing side, Montgomery's contrarian streak runs deep. His family literally trims their own personal budget to buy more stock when markets crash, putting the buy low, sell high mentality into practice. That mindset shows up in Bridgeway's small-cap value strategy, which stays disciplined even when the category falls out of favor, helped by a long partnership with Focus Partners Wealth that rebalances into the strategy precisely when everyone else is fleeing it. It's a countercyclical approach that sounds obvious on paper and is brutally hard to live by in practice. It's also the perfect case study for exactly why people need financial advisors in the first place.

Here we go again. England are into the knockout rounds of a World Cup 2026, and now the threat of penalties loom over every nerve-jangling game with Norway coming up in the quarter-finals.
England's relationship with shootouts was, for a long time, a tortured one. They were knocked out of Italia '90 by West Germany via the heartbreak of penalties, and suffered defeats by Argentina (1998) and Portugal (2006) in the same way.
The losing streak was finally lifted in 2018 when Gareth Southgate's meticulous preparation paid off in England's first-ever World Cup shootout win, against Colombia in the round of 16.
Norway v England LIVE: World Cup quarter-final build-up with concerns over Saharan dust cloud and double injury boost
England have since won two shootouts against Switzerland, in 2019 and 2024, either side of that painful Euro 2020 final defeat against Italy.

Saturday's FIFA World Cup quarterfinal between England and Norway faces fresh uncertainty due to severe weather conditions, with the 5pm ET kickoff potentially subject to postponement.
Thomas Tuchel and Ståle Solbakken's teams are gearing up for Saturday's marquee quarterfinal at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, but adverse weather is threatening to overshadow proceedings. With punishing heat and thunderstorms predicted throughout South Florida, mounting worries suggest the game could encounter delays or even brief halts.
The US National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the area, cautioning that temperatures could reach as high as 109°F when humidity is considered. Those circumstances have been compounded by a blanket of Saharan dust that crossed the Atlantic earlier this week, creating hazy skies and sparking health warnings for individuals with allergies and respiratory issues, via Wales Online.

A plume of Saharan dust is sweeping across Texas, spreading a milky haze over South-Central Texas before expanding north into Central Texas and the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex by late today into Tuesday.
The dust plume on Monday, June 29, is tied to a broader Saharan Air Layer outbreak over the western Gulf that is expected to persist into Tuesday, June 30. Satellite imagery shows a more concentrated band of elevated dust already moving onshore. While the strongest concentrations are expected to remain farther south, the plume is forecast to spread across much of Texas as it gradually weakens.
In South-Central Texas, the dust is riding in the mid-levels of the atmosphere near 5,000 to 6,000 feet, with potential for some downward mixing during peak daytime heating, according to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio. That could result in a slightly muted sky and a softer, hazier sun angle through the afternoon, though surface visibility impacts should remain limited. The most noticeable effect will likely be a loss of sky clarity rather than any tangible air quality issues at ground level.
As the plume pushes north, it will become more diffuse, but still capable of coloring the sky. North and Central Texas, including the Dallas-Fort Worth area, are more likely to see dust expressed as optics rather than haze — with sunsets and sunrises taking on deeper oranges and reds as sunlight scatters through suspended particles. Any impacts will be subtle but visually noticeable, especially around peak twilight hours.
The dust begins to thin further by Tuesday, June 30, as it lifts out of the region and mixes with returning Gulf moisture. Hot conditions will persist across Texas, with highs near or above seasonal norms, but skies should gradually clear from south to north as the Saharan plume disperses.

NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — At least 49 people died of thirst after a truck broke down and they were stranded for days in the Sahara Desert in northern Niger, authorities said.
The victims, all Nigeriens, were returning home from a religious festival in Mali when the truck stopped running more than 80 kilometers (49 miles) west of ***** amaka, near the borders with Mali and Algeria, Niger's Agadez region governorate said in an online post late Thursday.
Two men survived after trekking more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) to a water source and then continuing to ***** amaka, where they alerted authorities, the governorate said.
A delegation sent to the scene by the Agadez Region Governor Gen. Ibra Boulama Issa learned the truck had traveled for several days from the Malian town of Talhandek about 300 kilometers (187 miles) from the Nigerien border.
It was not immediately clear what led to the breakdown or how long the passengers waited.

When an underwater volcano erupted in the South Pacific in January 2022, it sent a plume of ash, steam and gas nearly 40 miles above the Earth’s surface. It was one of the most violent volcanic eruptions of modern times. It may also have also revealed a new weapon in the fight against a potent planet-heating gas, according to new research.
The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted with a power hundreds of times stronger than the Hiroshima nuclear explosion, setting off a tsunami and a sonic boom that went around the planet twice. It then did something “unexpected,” according to the authors of the new study published Thursday in the journal Nature Communications. It started cleaning up some of its own pollution.
The scientists’ discovery came from looking at advanced satellite data of the eruption. “We found a huge cloud of formaldehyde that should normally not be there,” said Maarten van Herpen, a study author, and a physicist and executive director at Acacia Impact Innovation, a Dutch consultancy. Formaldehyde often forms when methane, a potent planet-heating gas, is destroyed in the atmosphere.
The researchers believed they were observing a chemical process that had previously been identified over the Atlantic Ocean.
Scientists had found that when Saharan dust is blown over the Atlantic, it mixes with salt spray and forms small iron-based particles. As the sunlight hits them, it produces chlorine atoms, which react with methane in the atmosphere and help break it down.

Paleontologists uncover a new ‘Spinosaurus’ species by following a clue from a decades-old book into the Sahara Desert
My fixation on a small, desolate locale in the heart of the Sahara Desert started with a single line buried in a 630-page tome in French about the rocks of the central Sahara: “Dent de Carcharodontosaurus saharicus Depéret,” which translates to “tooth of Carcharodontosaurus saharicus Depéret” – “Depéret” refers to the scientist who originally named the species.
The intrepid French geologist Hugues Faure (1928-2003) had collected one saber-shaped tooth in the early 1950s at

Astrophotographer Josh Dury captured a gorgeous composite view of the March full moon as it rose off the coast of the United Kingdom mere hours after a dramatic blood moon total lunar eclipse.
"This image was captured from the Dorset coast looking out to sea," Dury told ****** e.com. "In spite of the lunar eclipse not being visible from the UK this time, the Sahara dust in the atmosphere would give the illusion it
