Lionel Messi scored a hat trick in Argentina’s 3-0 World Cup win over Algeria and then got honest about hitting a rough patch in his personal life.
The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday, June 17, that Messi was in tears after curling in a stunning goal to put Argentina ahead 17 minutes into the match in Kansas City. He found the net four times on the night, with one ruled out for offside.
His wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and their children rooted for him from the stands.
After the match, Messi kept it vague but said something outside of football has been bothering him. “The truth is, it’s something completely unrelated to sports,” he told a reporter, per The New York Times.
Without going into detail, the Argentina captain added, “I had some difficult, complicated days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation, to all my teammates because they were always by my side, as always, giving me a lot of strength to be okay, and that’s all.”
