Mike Maignan and Adrien Rabiot's 2026 World Cup journey with France has come to an end at the semi-final stage, as Les Bleus were defeated 2–0 by Spain in Dallas. Maignan played the full 90 minutes, beaten in the first half by an Oyarzabal penalty and in the second by Pedro Porro; Rabiot played 45 minutes before being replaced by Koné at half time. Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been one of the stars of this summer’s World Cup. The Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder has returned to his dominant best and has played a key role in Spain’s progression to the final of the 2026 World Cup. Spain booked their place in the final of the tournament with a dominant 2-0 win over tournament favourites France overnight. Rodri put in a masterful display in midfield to help Spain beat a powerful French outfit. In the process, Rodri’s performance against France was a reminder that Manchester City must extend his contract with the club.
The midfield battle loomed as the decisive factor in Spain’s World Cup semi-final against France. With Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and Michael Olise starting for France, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot started in midfield for Didier Deschamps’ side. In midfield, Spain started Rodri and Fabiàn Ruiz in midfield with Dani Olmo also dropping into midfield.
Simply put, France were overmatched in midfield. A first-half penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal and a second-half strike from Pedro Porro would seal a 2-0 win for Spain. As would an outstanding performance from every Spanish player on the pitch. At the heart of it all was Rodri, who was absolutely brilliant in midfield.
Rodri was at his imperious best in last night’s World Cup semi-final. He dictated the tempo of last night’s match with support from Fabiàn Ruiz and his teammates. Manchester City’s midfield general covered the pitch exceptionally well, routinely snuffing out the threat of the French. Rodri’s ability to read the game and contain any danger was superb. In possession, Rodri was his composed self as the occasion never phased him.
Rodri’s performance last night was reminiscent of his best displays for Manchester City. He has rightly earned the plaudits that his performance deserved. If anything, Rodri’s display was a reminder that he remains by far and away the best number six in world football by some distance.

There was an early unexpected delay to the World Cup semi-final between France and Spain after the referee had to be bailed out by a colleague for forgetting a key piece of equipment.
Spain won a free-kick on eight minutes after France midfielder Adrien Rabiot mistimed a challenge on Spain’s Dani Olmo, standing on the Barcelona man’s foot which saw him see a yellow card.

But in an embarrassing moment for referee Ivan Barton, he suddenly realised he did not have the white vanishing spray needed to show the wall where to stand.
Fourth official Glenn Nyberg ran onto the pitch to give him the spray can as Salvadoran official Barton made his way towards the touchline, smiling as he jogged past slightly bewildered players.

France has been undoubtedly the best team in the tournament so far, consistently putting in top shelf displays in almost every game.
While the attack has been the biggest driver of this success, their midfield has worked well too, with Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot forming a solid pairing in the middle of the park – the pair is set to be reunited for the semifinal against Spain.
In light of Rabiot's successful World Cup, the player is now eyeing a move away from AC Milan, with Real Madrid earmarked as a potential destination.

According to Miguel Serrano, Real Madrid received an offer in the past week to sign Rabiot, with the proposal arriving at the club's offices through an intermediary.

"Paraguay's players were an absolute disgrace," former England goalkeeper Joe Hart told BBC One. "If they were on my team, I'd be dragging them off the pitch."
After dismantling all before them at this World Cup, France had to find a new way to win to keep alive their dream of regaining the trophy they last lifted in 2018. Their 1-0 victory over Paraguay was hard earned.
Paraguay had won over neutrals by causing a major shock in the last 32, knocking out Germany on penalties.
But, in a bad-tempered match in the punishing Philadelphia heat, they showed their ugly side.
Andres Cubas escaped a booking after clattering into Adrien Rabiot. Juan Jose Caceres kicked out at Kylian Mbappe, and that went unpunished too.

Les Bleus have emerged as the hot favourites to win the trophy, having narrowly missed out in the 2022 Final against Argentina.

World Cup favourites France face Paraguay in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. With France on fire after an outstanding performance vs. Sweden in the last round, most people expect them to get a big win over the South Americans.
But Paraguay have built up the reputation of the surprise team of the tournament - they've beaten Türkiye and Germany in order to fight for a place in the quarter-finals now.
Bayern Munich's superstars Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano have become key players for Didier Deschamps' France side and Olise especially has transformed into one of the most important players for the super squad from Western Europe. Everytime he plays, he receives Ballon d'Or shouts - and deservedly so.
With just about an hour to go until kick-off, here are the confirmed lineups of both teams:

Milan mean business this summer under Ruben Amorim, who has already contacted Luka Modric to convince him to stay put. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the 40-year-old could make an unexpected U-turn on his initial decision and commit to one more year at San Siro.
Modric joined Milan as a free agent from Real Madrid last summer and quickly became the cornerstone of Massimiliano Allegri’s midfield in 2025/26. However, after the Rossoneri failed to secure Champions League qualification, the veteran playmaker bid farewell to the club.
Indeed, Modric signed a one-year contract with the 19-time Serie A winners with an option to extend for a further year. Despite passing the deadline, Milan could still persuade the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner to stay for another season. That’s largely thanks to Amorim, who reportedly views Modric as an indispensable figure in his rebuild.
Age is just a number in Modric’s case. Last season, he emerged as Milan’s driving force in the engine room, making as many as 34 Serie A appearances. The diminutive midfielder also amassed two goals and three ***** ists, forging a formidable partnership with Adrien Rabiot.
However, the Frenchman could leave San Siro in the coming months, with Allegri eager to reunite with his protege at Napoli. On the other hand, Milan will seemingly do everything to secure Modric’s services for another season.

France face Sweden on Tuesday at East Rutherford's MetLife Stadium for their 2026 FIFA World Cup last-32. After winning Group I with three consecutive wins against Senegal (3-1), Iraq (3-0) and Norway (4-1), Les Bleusare the overwhelming favourites against Graham Potter's side, although Adrien Rabiot is adamant his teammates won't let their guard down.
Didier Deschamps, who has returned to the France camp after attending his motehr's funeral on Friday, has announced that Inter Milan's Marcus Thuram will miss out. Fenerbahçe's N'Golo Kanté is also a doubt, but the pair was not expected to start anyway.
Compared to Friday's win, Deschamps is understood to make some changes. After being rested against Norway, ***** nal's William Saliba is set to get his spot back alongside Dayot Upamecano. Aston Villa's Lucas Digne is expected to get the nod ahead of Théo Hernandez, who conceded a penalty against Norway.
The left side of Frace's frightening attack is set to be tweaked too with the introduction of Bradley Barcola at the expense of Désiré Doué. Should they win against Sweden, Les Bleus will face Paraguay on July 4th.

France face Sweden at New York New Jersey Stadium on Tuesday evening in the World Cup last 32, beginning their knockout campaign as overwhelming favourites.
Didier Deschamps' side topped Group I with maximum points, scoring ten goals and conceding just two across victories over Senegal, Iraq and Norway. The two-time world champions, with Deschamps confirmed to be stepping down at the end of the tournament, are widely regarded as genuine contenders for the trophy this summer.
William Saliba is expected to return to the starting lineup. The ***** nal centre-back was rested against Norway as a precautionary measure for a back issue that has affected him throughout the closing stages of the club season, but Deschamps has no concerns about his availability for the knockout stage.
Saliba's reintroduction restores France's first-choice centre-back pairing alongside Dayot Upamecano, considered by some within the squad to be the strongest defensive partnership available to Deschamps this summer.
Deschamps has no other injury concerns to manage. Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot continue as the double pivot that has controlled tempo throughout the group stage, screening the back four and allowing the more advanced players freedom to operate.

France beat Senegal in their FIFA World Cup opener. For Les Bleus’ second Group Stage game, Didier Deschamps is expected to make three changes to his side, as per a report from L’Équipe.
The animation of France’s attack was criticised in the first half, prior to bringing Michael Olise into the No.10 position. The Bayern Munich forward is expected to occupy that role from the start, with Ousmane Dembélé pushed out to the right.
On the left, there could be a change. Paris Saint-Germain’s Désiré Doué struggled to make an impact and he could be replaced by the more dynamic and direct Bradley Barcola, L’Équipe understands. Behind him, there could also be a change, with Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne coming in for Théo Hernandez, whilst AS Roma’s Manu Koné is touted to replace Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni in the midfield. He will slot in alongside AC Milan’s Adrien Rabiot.

Ruben Amorim has a rebuild job on his hands as the recently-appointed head coach of Milan, as the Rossoneri have a list of nine players whose futures remain unsettled including the likes of Rafael Leao, Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot.
It was a bitterly disappointing end to the 2025-26 season for Milan, who missed out on qualification to the Champions League despite having spent much of the campaign in second place.
The collapse in form in the final in the final weeks of the season led to the departures of head coach Massimiliano Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada and CEO Giorgio Furlani, who were all dismissed in one brutal statement the day after the Serie A campaign came to an end.
It took several weeks for Milan to make any new appointments, but have since landed on former Manchester United and Sporting CP tactician Amorim to take over from Allegri. A new set of directors are still yet to be appointed.
Before the new coach starts thinking about potential signings, he already has a list of nine players whose futures need to be sorted as a matter of priority.

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot has raised concerns about the quality of the pitch at the New York New Jersey Stadium, describing it as "more like an artificial surface".
France started their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win against Senegal at the venue in New Jersey on Tuesday, which is home to NFL teams the New York Giants and Jets.
Also known as the MetLife Stadium, it is due to host England's final group game against Panama on 27 June, as well as the World Cup final on 19 July.
Rabiot, 31, started and played the full match, **** isting Bradley Barcola for the second goal, before criticising the pitch after France's victory.
"The pitch... I don't even know if you can call it that. It felt more like an artificial surface - quite hard and quite rigid," Rabiot said.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It was an ugly first half for the 2022 World Cup runners up, but France took control of its opening match in the second half behind goal from superstar Kylian Mbappe to beat Senegal 2-0 on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in New Jersey.
In a packed stadium filled with predominantly French supporters, Les Blues came out sluggish in the first half, generating only one shot despite having the majority of possession. France had only 0.02 expected goals to Senegal's 0.47, and Senegal had the best chances of the half, as striker Nicolas Jackson hit the post in the 25th minute and put one over the crossbar on the last touch of the half.
France looked much more the part of the tournament co-favorite in the second half, dominating possession early and creating several scoring chances, including a VAR check for a potential penalty when Mbappe was taken down in the box in the 59th minute. No penalty was awarded.
However, a few minutes later Mbappe slotted a ball past the Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy off a terrific pass from Michael Olise in the 66th minute to open the scoring.
France continued to exert its will in the second half, as Adrien Rabiot played a pretty through ball to Bradley Barcola, who chipped Mendy in the 82nd minute for France's second goal.

There are two big questions for France going into their FIFA World Cup opener against Senegal on Tuesday night.
The first pertains to who will start on the left wing. Marcus Thuram started there against the Ivory Coast in a World Cup warm-up, however, it was Désiré Doué who started against Northern Ireland. He struggled and there have been reports that Bradley Barcola may be preferred to his Paris Saint-Germain teammate. However, L’Équipe understands that it will be Doué who gets the nod.
With Michael Olise being pushed out to the right, Ousmane Dembélé will likely start in the No.10 role. The second question mark pertains to the fitness of William Saliba. The ****** nal defender continues to contend with a back injury but is expected to start for Les Bleus against Senegal.
