For the Pirates, Friday night's game at Great American Ballpark was a nightmare.
Starter Paul Skenes struggled, the bullpen blew its 20th save, a costly miscue in the eighth gave the Reds the lead, and Ryan O'Hearn had to be carried off the field in the ninth inning of an 8-7 loss to the Reds. Their losing streak is now at four games.
Top 1st, 2-0 PIT: The Pirates (55-56) took advantage of a couple defensive miscues and scored a pair of runs on a Nick Gonzales two-out single up the middle off Hunter Greene with the bases loaded.

A day after putting pen to paper and officially signing with the Pirates, Derek Curiel took batting practice on the field at PNC Park ahead of Monday night's game against the Diamondbacks.
The on-field batting practice capped off a six-day stay in Pittsburgh for Curiel, who was selected by the Pirates with the fifth pick in this year's draft. He joined a hitting group of Bryan Reynolds, Ryan O'Hearn and Jacob Gonzalez for his first swings at his future home.
"It felt good," Curiel said after his round. "The stadium is beautiful. Nice backdrop, beautiful batter's eye. Couldn't ask for a better field to hit at."
Curiel said he hadn't swung a bat since arriving in Pittsburgh, but he didn't waste much time before taking some impressive cuts. With third base coach Tony Beasley throwing to him, Curiel hit a couple ****** over the wall and into the seats. One deep drive to right drew some aahs from several current Pirates.

Chris Rembert becomes the highest draft pick in the Pirates’ 2026 class to sign so far. The Auburn University product was selected by Pittsburgh with the 51st pick in the second round — the Pirates were given the pick in this year’s draft after failing to sign 50th pick Angel Cervantes in 2025.
Rembert was considered a top-50 prospect by both MLB Pipeline (47th) and Baseball America (49th). The 21-year-old was an All-SEC first-team selection after slashing .343/.399/.459 with 13 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 46 RBIs and 12 steals in 58 games for the Tigers this past season.

Pirates right-handed starter Braxton Ashcraft has been named to the National League All-Star team as one of three replacements announced by Major League Baseball.
Ashcraft, along with Phillies left-hander Jesús Luzardo and Cardinals right-hander Riley O’Brien, will take the places of Pirates reigning Cy Young winner Paul Skenes, Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski and Marlins righty Max Meyer.
Ashcraft is in his first full season in the big leagues after making his debut with the Pirates last season. In 18 starts this year, the 26-year-old is 9-3 with a 3.24 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 108.1 innings.
