The arrival of Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers made Emmet Sheehan expendable.
A disastrous outing the day before the trade deadline appears to have sealed his fate. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters Monday that the Dodgers are optioning Sheehan to to Triple-A Oklahoma City. By optioning Sheehan, the Dodgers send him directly to the minor leagues without him having to clear waivers.
Roberts delivered the news minutes after the conclusion of the MLB trade deadline.
"It's going to give him a chance to reset and get out of this hotbox of performance," Roberts said. "Obviously, we believe in him. We've shown that year in and year out. …
"We've just got to get him back to being who he is."

The Mets continued the churn of the pitching staff, recalling Zach Thornton and optioning Tobias Myers to Triple-A Syracuse.
Thornton will start today in the final game of the first half for the Mets against the Red Sox, which will be Thornton's third MLB start. His first start against the was a little rough; over four and a third innings, Thornton surrendered four hits, including a home run, and walked two, good for four earned runs and a loss. However, his second start was far better, going six strong innings of one run ball, striking out seven while walking one.
If the Mets decide to trade some of their starters at the deadline, and if pitchers like Jonah Tong and Jack Wenninger continue to scuffle, Thornton may be a key piece of the Mets' rotation through the end of 2026.
Myers has recently been a ping pong ball, shuttling between the big league club and Triple-A a number of times. After a great spring training, Myers had a decent start to the season before hitting a tough patch before being sent down at the end of May. Since his initial optioning, things have been ugly for Myers, whose ERA has jumped more than two runs in that time.

American Mineral Resources CEO Ryan Cunningham talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's growing portfolio of precious metals and critical minerals projects, the changing funding environment for junior mining companies and why capital is increasingly flowing towards artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Cunningham explained that American Mineral Resources has built a portfolio of 12 projects across seven jurisdictions at various stages of exploration and development. The company's strategy has focused on acquiring and optioning high-grade precious metals and critical metals deposits in jurisdictions it believes offer strong long-term potential.
The discussion also examined how the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is influencing capital markets. Cunningham shared his view that significant amounts of investment have been diverted away from traditional resource industries, including mining, oil and gas, as investors pursue opportunities linked to artificial intelligence. As he noted, "Everyone has kind of felt this gravitational pull of capital away from just about everywhere heading into AI."
Drawing on his experience in resource development, Cunningham discussed the importance of disciplined financing, careful project execution and managing risks such as permitting delays, commodity price volatility and changing market conditions. He also suggested that periods of strong market enthusiasm can make fundraising easier initially, but maintaining long-term financing remains one of the biggest challenges for junior resource companies.
Looking specifically at American Mineral Resources, Cunningham highlighted the company's recently announced plan to spin out its Pisco North polymetallic project in Quebec into a publicly traded Canadian shell. He explained that Canadian flow-through share financing has created attractive funding opportunities for junior mining companies and said the company believes this structure may provide more efficient access to exploration capital than US markets.

The Los Angeles Dodgers activated right-handed relief pitcher Evan Phillips from the injured list ahead of Monday’s game.
In a corresponding move, the Dodgers are optioning right-handed reliever Paul Gervase.
“We’ve all been waiting and took our time,” manager Dave Roberts said pregame, as reported by Dodgers Nation’s Noel Sanchez. “Looking forward to getting him back, I know he’s thrilled.”
The Dodgers non-tendered Phillips in the offseason, though he returned on a one-year, $6.5 million deal just before the beginning of spring training. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last year, and hasn’t pitched in MLB since.
Prior to his injury last season, Phillips made seven appearances for the Dodgers and held his opponents scoreless through 5.2 innings.

The Diamondbacks reinstated catcher James McCann from the injured list on Monday, July 6, making room on the roster by optioning catcher Adrian Del Castillo to Triple-A Reno.
McCann has been on the 10-day injured list since May 19 with a strained right quad. He played three games in Triple-A Reno on a rehab **** ignment, going 0 for 12 with two strikeouts.
McCann was hitting .203/.217/.254 in 59 at-bats at the time of his injury. He was coming off a productive 2025 season in which he hit .260/.324/.431 with five homers in 41 games.
Del Castillo delivered a key, three-run homer in the Diamondbacks’ 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, July 4, but has struggled mightily to get going at the plate this year. He missed all of spring training with a calf injury, then played only sparingly at Triple-A Reno before being summoned to the majors in early April.
In 151 at-bats, Del Castillo hit just .185/.244/.311 with five homers.

The Diamondbacks promoted infielder/outfielder Tim Tawa from Triple-A Reno on Sunday, July 5, clearing ****** e by optioning infielder LuJames Groover.
Tawa has been back and forth a couple of times between the majors and Reno this season and has mashed during his time in the minors. In 88 plate appearances with Reno, he owns a .320/.409/.733 line with six doubles, two triples and seven home runs.
Manager Torey Lovullo gave Tawa the start on July 5 at third base but said he could factor into any number of positions going forward, including first base, at which the Diamondbacks have been desperate for production.
Lovullo, in recent days, has expressed a willingness to play the hot hand — or the "king of the court," as he has put it — and as such, he has Ildemaro Vargas in the lineup for the third consecutive game. Vargas has gone 4 for 8 with a double and two RBIs over the past two days.
Lovullo is giving Pavin Smith the start at first base. Tawa is at third because Lovullo wanted veteran Nolan Arenado to get a day off to "recharge" ahead of the upcoming seven-game road trip. Ketel Marte is serving as the designated hitter.

Rangers replace former Yankees prospect with first-round pick bust originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Texas Rangers made a notable roster move on Friday, optioning a lineup regular to Triple-A for a former first-round pick who hasn't panned out.
According to an announcement from the AL West club, infielder Josh Smith was optioned to the minors. He helped the Rangers win a World Series ***** le in 2023 but has struggled at the plate in 2026.
Taking Smith's place on the roster is outfielder Jarred Kelenic. At just 26 years old, there's still time for the left-handed hitter to turn his career around.
But the results from the last few seasons have not been pretty.

After Wednesday’s 12-4 defeat to the Miami Marlins where Andrew Painter surrendered six runs in just two innings of work, the Phillies will be shaking up the back of their rotation by optioning Andrew Painter to AAA.
The Phillies have tried everything with Painter. They’ve tweaked his usage in certain starts to limit fastball damage, they’ve used an opener, and they gave him 14 appearances to figure this out. With a 7.06 ERA in 65.0 innings pitched, nothing stuck long enough.
Through roughly the first two and a half months of the season, the Phillies have cycled through their number five and six starting pitching options from the big league roster. They went into the season with Taijuan Walker making starts with Zack Wheeler injured but he was released after just 22.2 innings of work because he had an ERA over 9.
Now with Painter out, there is no clear answer for what the Phillies will do on the rotation’s fifth turn. Matt Gelb wrote that former Atlanta Brave and Chicago White Sox Bryse Wilson had triggered his upward mobility clause in his minor league contract, which could force the Phillies to add him to the roster. In 54.1 innings with the Iron Pigs, Wilson carries a 6.29 ERA with 2.76 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Alan Rangel is already on the 40-man roster and pitched for the Phillies earlier this year when they had Kyle Backhus open for the aforementioned Walker in the middle of their ten game losing streak. Rangel has looked solid, albeit not super inspiring with the Pigs, carrying a 3.74 ERA in 65.0 innings.
