WEST LAFAYETTE — As Dave Shondell built Purdue volleyball into a consistent national contender, he also built an all-time legacy among all Boilermaker coaches.
No. 14 Purdue's 3-0 victory over No. 12 Texas A&M, the reigning national champions, on the opening night of the Big Ten/SEC Challenge on Tuesday at Mackey Arena put Shondell in a tier of his own. The win was the 513th of Shondell's career, passing former basketball coach Gene Keady for most victories by any Purdue coach with Keady in attendance.
Shondell became Purdue volleyball's all-time wins leader with his 470th in 2024. He tied Keady for most wins in any sport last season when the Boilermakers beat SMU to reach their fifth Elite Eight in his tenure.
Shondell was presented the game ball and, after leading the team around Mackey to greet the remaining fans, libero Ryan McAleer and opposite hitter Grace Heaney hugged Shondell. The rest of the team followed, and the Boiler Block chanted "Dave!"
Shondell, a Muncie native, came to Purdue in 2003 after successful high school stints at Daleville and Muncie Central. His teams reached the Sweet 16 in 13 of his first 24 seasons and are 19-0 in first-round NCAA tournament matches. With Friday's victory, his career winning percentage rose to .681.

The Lions hit the home pitch Thursday taking on Muncie Central in boys soccer action. The Lions got on the board first, but two unanswered goals by the Bearcats gave Muncie Central a 2-1 victory.
Rushville opened the scoring on a blast off the foot of Colton England. From 30 yards out, England found the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead for the home squad.
Muncie Central tied the game to send the teams to the half all square at 1-1. A lone second half goal by the Bearcats was the difference maker.
England's goal was his seventh of the season.
In junior varsity action, the Lions fell 3-0.

MUNCIE — The city of Muncie needed a high school football game more than it ever has.
On Friday, Aug. 21, the Muncie Central Bearcats and Delta Eagles answered the call by treating their fans to an instant classic — a 23-22 victory by the Bearcats that came down to the final second, literally.
With both communities still reeling from the calamitous flooding that swept through the area in recent weeks, the two teams fought their tails off to put a brilliant rivalry game together and give everyone who saw it a sense of unity in times of hardship.
"Everybody's going through stuff right now, but we had however long this game was to just be entrenched in it and go play this football game," Muncie Central coach Kyle Buresh said. "At the end of the day, that was a fun one that we all put on a show for our community tonight. Both teams did, really proud of the way both teams handled themselves, competed extremely hard but competed with first class."
Central clinched its victory in the very last second of the game. The Bearcats trailed 22-16 with 23 seconds left in the game and used their final timeout before a third-and-goal play. Junior quarterback Mason Ferguson was sacked on third down, forcing him and his teammates to hurry to the line of scrimmage and try to get one last snap off.

One of Indiana's greatest college football rivalries will be played on a neutral site for the first time in more than a century.
And the game will take place in Muncie.
DePauw and Wabash will play the annual "Monon Bell" game at Scheumann Stadium on the campus of Ball State University Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026. The news was announced on Friday, July 10.
DePauw's football stadium is going through a two-year renovation project, meaning this year's game had to be moved elsewhere. It's the first time in 104 years the game will not be played on either school's campus.
"We're thrilled to partner with Ball State as the host for one of the most-storied rivalries in college sports," said DePauw athletic director Stevie Baker-Watson in a press release. "Scheumann Stadium will provide both fan bases with an excellent experience while maintaining the traditions that have become so important to both institutions."
And the game will take place in Muncie.

The longest-running 70.3 triathlon in North America returns to Muncie this week.
The 47th annual Ironman 70.3 Muncie will be held this Saturday, July 11. The Ironman triathlon consists of swim, bike and run portions over a total distance of 70.3 miles — hence the name. First held in 1980 under the name "Muncie Endurathon," this will be the 16th Muncie triathlon under the Ironman 70.3 banner.
Last year's race saw over 700 participants and hundreds more spectators from 44 US states and 12 different countries. As Muncie prepares for thousands to descend upon it for the annual Ironman, here's five things you need to know:

FARMLAND — For the first time in five years, the Golden Bears got to go swimming.
Monroe Central served as the host of an IHSAA boys golf sectional on Monday, June 8, welcoming Cowan, Delta, Jay County, Muncie Central, Randolph Southern, Union City, Union (Modoc), Wapahani, Wes-Del, Winchester Community and Yorktown to Hickory Hills Golf Club. After over six hours of play, the Golden Bears emerged as the sectional champions on their home course with a score of 317.
As is Monroe Central tradition, the team celebrated its first sectional championship since 2021 by jumping into the pond next to hole 3. For senior Cohen West, it was a moment he had waited for his whole high school career.
"It's awesome," West said. "Haven't been able to get it done the past couple of years, but I knew that this was going to be the year. Every day, we practice out here, so it's just nice to get out here, and I think we all had confidence in each other to go out and do it."
While West is the No. 1 player for the Golden Bears, it was junior Maddox Taylor at the No. 2 spot who took home low medalist honors. Taylor shot a 1-over-par 71, while West placed second with a 75, but Taylor was more thrilled that the team got it done for West's last match at Hickory Hills as a Golden Bear golfer.
