One would be hard pressed to come up with a night of prep football as unquestionably exciting — and yet indescribably bizarre — as what went down Thursday around Albuquerque.
Legacy Academy and Hope Christian played a thrilling game at Nusenda Community Stadium, filled with one huge play after another. It was delayed twice — once for 35 minutes at the start by lightning, which in and of itself is not so strange given that it is still monsoon season.

It was also delayed once in the fourth quarter by lighting. Or a lack thereof. Hope eventually prevailed, 40-27.
At Wilson Stadium, Albuquerque High and Eldorado slugged it out for roughly three hours and 40 minutes — without any delays from the heavens — and were just about to begin a second overtime when the facility was emptied and the teams sent off the field because of lightning.
A little after 11 p.m., the teams decided there would be no more football, and it was declared a 43-43 tie, a rare thing in New Mexico prep football, since the rules are explicitly designed to have a winner and a loser in every game.

It has been an especially tough year for the Cubs on the injury front, as they have had to weather a veritable monsoon of ailments throughout the season.
But things had been trending better in that regard over the last few weeks, with multiple key players working toward a return.
And for the most part, the injury woes have hit the pitching staff, while the position player group has been largely healthy throughout the year.
Both aspects have now changed, as the Cubs were dealt a pair of injury blows Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals and will have to spend the next few weeks trying to keep the ship afloat in the aftermath.
The Cubs made a slew of roster moves Monday afternoon, placing shortstop Dansby Swanson on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain and right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera on the 15-day IL with a blister on his right hand. Rookie James Triantos was also optioned to Triple-A Iowa, with Javier ******* ad, Kevin Alcántara and Owen Miller coming up from the minors.

GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — Monsoon rains delayed the start of play on day two of the first test between Sri Lanka and India at the Galle International Stadium on Sunday, with the morning session completely washed out.
There was no play at the start of the afternoon either, with India on 288-2 (73 overs) at stumps on day one.
Devdutt Padikkal scored 131 not out – his maiden test hundred – with Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 27.
There was hope for play to resume later in the day with two sessions of approximately 90 minutes each with a 20-minute tea break in between planned. If the rain holds off, 43 overs will be played.
India had won the toss and opted to bat, with both teams fielding spin-heavy attacks. This is the 50th test played at Galle.

A sanctioned tanker loaded with crude is leaving a growing trail of oil in protected waters off the coast of Oman, according to newly reviewed satellite images, as experts warn the stranded vessel could break apart during the region's rough monsoon season.
Satellite images reviewed by The ****** ociated Press show an oil sheen covering roughly 20 square kilometers, or about 8 square miles, around Dhofar's Qibliyah Island, part of Oman's protected Hallaniyat Islands. Dark patches of crude have also reached the shoreline. Experts say the leak has worsened in recent days, fueling fears that rough weather could trigger a much larger spill.
"The last few days, the imagery indicates an increase in oil coming out, as the size of the sheen is growing," Wim Zwijnenburg, an environmental expert with the Dutch peace organization PAX, told the AP.

NEW DELHI (AP) — Supporters of India's youth-led ******* roach movement clashed with police Monday as thousands of them tried to march to Parliament to demand the education minister's resignation, while the government appeared to make its first outreach to the movement's leaders.
Police fired tear gas and charged at protesters with batons after demonstrators tried to breach security barricades surrounding the protest site in central New Delhi, marking one of the most serious confrontations yet in the movement's campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
Delhi Police said the march had not been authorized and that restrictions were needed to maintain law and order around Parliament during the monsoon session, which began Monday.
The crowd at Jantar Mantar, a designated site for protests just a few kilometers from Parliament, included students, professionals and families with young children. Many carried backpacks with water and food, expecting a long day, while others waved Indian flags. Police urged protesters to disperse over loudspeakers, as the crowd chanted slogans against the education minister and Modi.
The ******* roach Janta Party emerged in May after the Supreme Court chief justice compared some unemployed young people to "cockroaches" during an unrelated hearing. Supporters embraced the remark, turning it into a satirical movement that has attracted millions of followers on social media.

NEW DELHI, July 3 (Reuters) - India's coal-fired power generation surged to a near-three-year high in June because of increased cooling demand from higher temperatures from an extended heatwave and below-average monsoon rainfall, government data showed.
India's total electricity generation in June rose 10.4% from a year ago to 178.31 billion kilowatt‑hours, according to Reuters calculations of daily data from federal grid regulator Grid-India.
Coal-fired power generation rose about 14% year-on-year to 120.20 billion kWh in June, the highest since November 2023, the data showed.
Last month, India logged its fifth-driest June since 1901 due to a strong El Nino pattern, with searing heat driving demand for cooling, according to weather office data. The El Nino is a weather phenomenon caused by a warming of the Pacific Ocean waters off South America that tends to cause hot, dry weather in South and Southeast Asia.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Cricket ****** ociation (UPCA) is likely to shift the upcoming Uttar Pradesh T20 League from Green Park Stadium in Kanpur to the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, barely weeks after announcing Kanpur as the host venue.
The UPCA had, during a press conference in Kanpur on May 13, declared that the fourth edition of the league would be held at Green Park.
However, the decision was reviewed following a technical ****** sment of the venue ahead of the tournament, scheduled to be held in Aug.
UPCA sources claimed that the stadium’s ageing infrastructure, inadequate floodlighting, limited spectator capacity and concerns over rain-related disruptions have prompted the change of venue.
“Since the conclusion of the India-Afghanistan international match, UPCA officials have been carrying out a comprehensive technical ****** sment of the playing conditions at Green Park Stadium in view of the proposed three-week-long tournament,” a source said.
The ****** sment found that the existing floodlighting system falls short of the standards required for televised matches. “The broadcasting team requires a minimum illumination of 1,700 lux for high-quality telecast, whereas the existing floodlights at Green Park generate only around 1,400 lux,” he said.
The ****** ociation also cited a recent report by the public works department restricting the stadium’s spectator capacity to around 14,000, significantly lower than its earlier capacity, creating operational and commercial constraints for the organisers.
Another major concern was the stadium’s vulnerability to waterlogging during the monsoon. Green Park has been struggling with inadequate drainage, resulting in delays in restoring playing conditions after heavy rain.
With the tournament scheduled during the peak monsoon season and forecasts indicating prolonged rainfall in Aug, officials fear repeated interruptions over the three-week tournament.
UPCA sources said the combination of technical, infrastructural and weather-related challenges left the organisers with little option but to relocate the tournament to Ekana Stadium, which offers superior drainage, modern floodlighting and significantly higher seating capacity.

New Mexico's forests are dying faster than at any time on record. In 2025, the state mapped 209,000 acres of trees killed by bark beetles and other insects, which was more than a 200% increase over the year before, according to a newly released report from the New Mexico Forestry Division. And the main impetus for that arboreal death was the state's dwindling water supply.
"At the beginning of January 2025, 35% of the state was in moderate drought and 20% in severe drought," the report read. "By the end of December 2025, 71% of the state was in moderate drought and 52% was in severe drought."
According to the report, New Mexico recorded its second-warmest year on record. The lower Rio Grande, the river that has sustained farming communities in the southern part of the state for centuries, is now a river of sand most of the year, as the aquifer underneath is dropping by more than a foot each year. The issue has to do with the dry conditions creating the perfect environment for bark beetles to kill trees in record numbers.
And 2026 is shaping up to be no different. "We had a bleak winter and little to no snowpack, and there are areas that are currently experiencing bark beetle attack," said Victor Lucero, forest health program manager for the New Mexico Forestry Division. Drought stress, he said, is the primary condition that leaves trees defenseless: stripping them of the sustained sap flow that is their only natural shield against infestation. "Things may change with respect to tree mortality if things remain hot and dry," Lucero said. The one scenario that could turn the tide: "If the summer monsoon rains arrive as predicted, this may improve the resilience of live trees to withstand bark beetle attack."
Now, just two miles of the Mexican border in the Chihuahuan Desert, Oracle and OpenAI are building one of the largest data centers in the country.

Echoing a familiar fate shared by many farmers globally this year, grape farmers in India have projected at least a 50% decline in grape production due to adverse weather, the Times of India reported.
The Maharashtra region, one of India's largest grape-producing states, experienced a wetter-than-average monsoon season this year. Since June, Maharashtra has received 996.7 millimeters, or about 39 inches, of rain this monsoon season, which is 104% above average, according to a Humanitarian Aid International fact sheet.
