Manchester City have confirmed that Josko Gvardiol has signed a new long-term contract, keeping the Croatia international at the Etihad until at least 2031.
The 24-year-old has agreed a five-year extension, with the club holding the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months. Gvardiol becomes the second City defender to commit his future this week, following Abdukodir Khusanov's new deal.
Since joining from RB Leipzig in 2023, Gvardiol has developed into one of City's most important players. Comfortable at both centre-back and left-back, he has made 122 appearances, scored 13 goals and helped the club win six major trophies, including the Premier League and FIFA Club World Cup.
The new contract comes after speculation linking Gvardiol with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Instead, the Croatian has reaffirmed his commitment to City as they continue to reshape their defence following the departures of John Stones and Nathan Aké ahead of the new campaign.

The most expensive defender in City's history, Gvardiol cost £77m when he joined from RB Leipzig in 2023 and went on to win the club's player-of the-year award for 2024-25.

Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov signed a five-year contract extension with the Premier League club on Saturday.
Khusanov helped City win the FA Cup and League Cup last season, as well as finishing second in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old centre-back joined City from French side Lens in January 2025.
He has been capped 30 times for Uzbekistan and featured at the World Cup, playing in all three of their Group K matches.
"This is a great day for me and my family. I am really happy to extend my stay at City," Khusanov said.

Manchester City have given Abdukodir Khusanov a new five-year deal after concluding the has all the attributes required to become a world-class central defender.
The 22-year-old, a £33.5m signing from Lens in January 2025, has recovered from a traumatic debut against Chelsea to go on to become a key player in the second half of last season.
Khusanov started in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals as City won twice at Wembley and excelled in their Champions League tie against Real Madrid.
And with the departure of experienced defenders John Stones and Nathan Ake, he is slated for a key role in the new regime under Enzo Maresca.

It came as no great surprise that Nathan Ake and John Stones departed Manchester City this summer. Ake has completed a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce. John Stones’ contract wasn’t renewed and he has departed the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. While their departures were expected, they do leave a void in terms of leadership and experience in Manchester City’s defence. Ruben Dias has also been linked with a summer move away from Manchester City. However, with Ake and Stones both gone, City simply cannot afford to lose their defensive leader.
Nathan Ake and John Stones were the only bit-part players for Manchester City last season. Ake was ever reliable for his team, although he was used as a squad player during the 2025-26 season by Pep Guardiola. Injuries wrecked the 2025-26 campaign for John Stones, which led to him being released. While the pair were predominantly on the periphery of the City squad last season, their experience and leadership were important to Pep Guardiola’s new-look side.
Now that Stones and Ake are both gone, Ruben Dias with his leadership, presence, and experience will play a huge role in Enzo Maresca’s squad. Yes, Dias will face competition for a place in the City starting eleven. Josko Gvardiol, Abdukodir Khusanov, Marc Guehi, and Vitor Reis will all be eager to start. However, Ruben Dias has the intangibles that Manchester City need. When fully fit, Dias remains an elite centre-back. Manchester City’s stance is that the Portuguese international is not for sale. Furthermore, Bailey reports that Dias is viewed as one of the foundations of Enzo Maresca’s squad and no offers for him will be entertained.

Congo advanced to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time by rallying to a 3-1 win against Uzbekistan on Saturday night.
The African nation was playing in soccer’s biggest tournament for only the second time in its history after a 52-year absence. Two second-half goals from Yoane Wissa and one from Fiston Mayele sealed the win and saw Congo join Cape Verde as another surprise qualifier for the round of 32.
Uzbekistan led through Eldor Shomurodov’s first-half strike that looked set to end Congo’s hopes.
But Sébastien Desabre’s team, which had already pulled off one of the surprise results of the World Cup by holding Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal to a 1-1 draw in its opening game, fought back after the break.
Trailing to Shomurodov’s lobbed goal in the 10th minute, Congo equalized in the 68th when Wissa was brought down by Abdukodir Khusanov in the box for a penalty.
