Evy Leibfarth climbed out of her boat into a throng of family, coaches and teammates — all of whom took turns embracing the home-country star.
Leibfarth made history Thursday afternoon in Oklahoma City, becoming the first American woman to medal in kayak slalom at a world championship since 2003 — the year before Leibfarth, 22, was born.
"A little bit of disbelief," Leibfarth said when asked how it felt. "Going into this event, I definitely knew that I had it in me to do it, but of course putting it on on race day is a whole different game. You have the conditions, the course out there is really hard and then competing against all the top ladies in the world. I'm really proud of myself and my team for making this happen."
Australian legend Jessica Fox took gold in the women's kayak final at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. Great Britain's Kimberley Woods won bronze.
"They're some of my biggest idols but also girls I call friends," Leibfarth said of Fox and Woods, "so that's really special, too."

Together, Expedia (EXPE) and Booking.com (BKNG) account for roughly half of the online travel agency market. While Booking's market capitalization of $139 billion dwarfs the roughly $32 billion market cap of its rival, Expedia stock has a spot on the Investor's Business Daily Breakout Stocks Index while Booking.com does not.
While both stocks recently reset their base counts, Expedia stands poised for a breakout, which would mark a record high. Meanwhile, Booking.com remains mired below its 200-day line.
Expedia's portfolio of brands includes Expedia for full-service booking, Hotels.com, specializing in hotels, and Vrbo to handle vacation rentals. Booking's portfolio includes Priceline, Agoda, Kayak, OpenTable, and Rentalcars.com.
While Hilton Worldwide (HLT) coined the term "Whycation," Expedia and Booking.com have both tapped into the trend of purpose-driven, goal-oriented getaways.
As part of its Unpack'26 report, Expedia also outlined its Set-Jetting Forecast, focusing on travel spots inspired by movies and TV shows. According to Expedia, 81% of Gen Z and millennial travelers now plan getaways based on TV shows and movies. Expedia also showcases Fan Voyage for sports travel and Farm Charm through its Vrbo business. Through Hotels.com, it also spotlights Salvaged Stays with retreats converted from architectural relics.

Britain's Joe Clarke marked the opening day of the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with a gold medal in the men's kayak cross in Oklahoma City.
The 33-year-old surged to victory in the individual time trial in 46.54 seconds at the Olympics Canoe Slalom venue set to be used at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
"It feels amazing. I've not been running the best the past couple of days and I tweaked my neck a little bit," Clarke said.
"Yesterday's kayak cross was probably one of the worst I've ever had, so to turn it around within 16 hours is fantastic and a great start to the competition."
Clarke won silver in the same event at Penrith last year, and has now won seven world **** les across all events.

A pub landlord used his kayak to help save a male swan from a near-fatal injury.
Sussex Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (SVFRS) said its specialist rescue team was called to the swan, trapped in fishing wire with "a very large lure" between his beak and wing, in Langstone Harbour, Hampshire, on Saturday.
"The swan could have easily lost his life and his family of cygnets and mate lost their family member due to the carelessness of people fishing in the area," SVFRS said.
After a night at a wildlife hospital the swan was "happily released back to his family" on Sunday.
The initial plan was to deploy the SVFRS rowing boat, but it said that would have taken too long to arrive from the rescuers' base in Ford, West Sussex, and the swan "was in trouble and bleeding heavily".

Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) is one of the Iran Peace Deal Sends Oil Lower: Top 8 Travel Stocks to Buy Now. According to a report released on June 23, BTIG ******* yst Jake Fuller reaffirmed a Buy rating on Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) with a price target of $250. The firm's price target offers an additional 37% upside from current levels. In contrast to BTIG, Richard Clarke from Bernstein reaffirmed a Hold rating on the stock on June 11. He also ******* igned a target price of $188 to the stock.
BKNG's exceptional long-term execution and scale advantages have helped it outperform the broader travel industry. The company has achieved this by focusing on attractive markets and efficiently attracting customers through its marketing and distribution channels. Moreover, with the increasing travel demand, BKNG is building platforms that hotels increasingly rely on.
The main reason for Richard Clarke's neutral stance is that the AI tailwind could pose a threat to travel companies. The ******* yst believes that as of now, Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) is benefiting from its huge size and large network of travelers. However, as AI tools become widely available, the industry's focus may shift from pure scale to AI ******* istants. Hotels may prioritize AI-driven channels over online travel agencies for their best offers. This could create a long-term risk for the BKNG business model and its competitive position.
Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) provides online travel and related solutions through its brands: Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, KAYAK, and OpenTable. The company is based in Norwalk, Connecticut, and was founded in July 1997 by Jay Scott Walker.
While we acknowledge the potential of BKNG as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. If you're looking for an extremely undervalued AI stock that also stands to benefit significantly from Trump-era tariffs and the onshoring trend, see our free report on the best short-term AI stock.
