The Detroit Tigers are about to make a rotation change that looks temporary on paper.
It may not stay that way.
Left-hander Andrew Sears is already in Detroit and is expected to start Saturday against the Colorado Rockies. The Tigers are expected to place Keider Montero on the paternity list as he travels to Venezuela for the birth of his child, according to reporting from Evan Woodbery.
Normally, that would be a straightforward swap. One starter leaves for a few days, another fills his spot, and everything returns to normal when the original starter comes back.
Detroit's situation is more complicated because Jack Flaherty is also closing in on his return from the injured list.

Two injured Detroit Tigers pitchers are taking one step closer to returning.
Before Detroit's game against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, Sept. 11, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that right-hander Jack Flaherty will throw a simulated game on Saturday, at Comerica Park. Flaherty is expected to pitch 2-3 simulated innings against Tigers batters from the mound before the afternoon game against the Rockies.
Flaherty last pitched competitively for Triple-A Toledo on Sept. 6, allowing one hits and zero runs over 1⅓ innings in a rehab start in Toledo. The righty has been rehabbing from right flexor tendon inflammation and last pitched in the majors in a start against the Chicago Cubs on July 20.
Hank Greenberg won the World Series with the Detroit Tigers in 1935 and 1945. He's a Hall of Fame slugger and won the American League MVP award twice.

CLEVELAND – Jack Flaherty is on his way back to the Detroit Tigers.
The 30-year-old right-hander will begin a rehab ******* ignment with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Sept. 6.
"Short stint," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said on Saturday before the Tigers played the Cleveland Guardians. "Basically, like another live BP, but we're going to have it in competition. So he may only go one inning. He may get two ups. We're not sure."
Flaherty is rehabbing from right flexor tendon inflammation, and has been throwing live bullpens in recent weeks while traveling with the Tigers, with fastball velocity around 93 mph, according to Hinch.
"The reality is setting in that it's going to be really hard to build him all the way back up into that five, six, or seven-inning pitcher," Hinch said Wednesday in Minneapolis. "But that doesn't mean that we won't be more creative with him if the recovery continues."

For all the drama surrounding the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes, and the will they or won't they position the Tigers were in as the trade deadline approached, the Detroit Tigers ultimately kept to just two notable trades. They got good value for both Skubal and Casey Mize, but at the same time didn't really address their biggest weakness in their high leverage relief corps. As they still seem bent on trying to secure a wild card slot, it's a bit of a peculiar mixed bag in terms of their intentions, but ultimately their trades have to be viewed as punting on the 2026 season without simply giving everything away to slash payroll. They had two valuable ****** ets heading to free agency, and they did a solid job of cashing them in for good prospects with which to restock their farm system.
The Tigers currently have the 17th best odds of making the postseason and are +590 on FanDuel's sportsbook to do so at the moment. FanGraphs is more optimistic, giving them a 22.6 percent chance of reaching the playoffs. It helps that they're not entirely out of the divisional race, as well as having the shot at a wild card berth and currently just 2.5 games back of the final spot.
Those odds still aren't great, and with Skubal and Mize out of the rotation, and no attempt to address the bullpen, those odds will also have to be adjusted to reflect the significantly weaker starting rotation they'll be working with down the stretch. Ultimately, while the Tigers will say they're still trying to make the postseason and will do what they can with what they have to do so, the totality of their moves adds up to capitulation without going whole hog and trying to dump the salaries of players like Gleyber Torres, Jack Flaherty, or Kenley Jansen.
Of course, teams have to want those players, and with Flaherty injured, and Jansen struggling, there wasn't going to be much, if any, interest. Still, the decision not to deal Torres is the really interesting one. He wouldn't return a whole lot in trade, but he's also potentially blocking a currently hot-hitting prospect in Max Anderson. Perhaps Anderson will get the call anyway and they'll simply piece together at-bats for the Anderson/Torres duo, but the best reason to keep Torres is to have that extra, professional right-handed bat in the lineup against the best teams in the postseason.
Overall, we'll take the Tigers for what they did do, rather than trying to piece together why other moves weren't pursued. The slightly mixed signals here make it tricky to figure out what they're thinking in regard to their hopes to at least get into the postseason. The trades suggest a team throwing in the towel, and as sellers, they did pretty well overall. On the other hand, their proximity to a wild card berth, says they still have an outside shot. So declining to go after relief help was strange when that's been the team's main problem all season long. Whatever their intentions or hopes the rest of the season, they sold off talent and got quali

Jack Flaherty did not need any words to make his point.
After the Detroit Tigers traded Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Casey Mize to the San Diego Padres, Flaherty posted a familiar GIF on X showing an almost completely empty room.
The image comes from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and is commonly used to represent suddenly being left alone after everyone else has departed.
Flaherty did not include a caption, but the timing made the apparent message difficult to miss.
Detroit moved two major pieces from its starting rotation in a matter of days. Skubal was sent to Los Angeles for Zyhir Hope, River Ryan and Brady Smith, while Mize and Gage Workman were dealt to San Diego for Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf.

CHICAGO – Detroit Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty just didn’t feel right while pitching against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Monday, July 20.
“Didn't feel normal there, like in the fourth inning,” Flaherty said. “Ball wasn't coming out the same.”
He was taken out after four innings after giving up four runs off five hits and striking out six.
After going through tests, Flaherty was put on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with right flexor tendon inflammation. But he does not feel it will be a long-term issue. His stay on the IL is expected to be close to the minimum.

CHICAGO — The Detroit Tigers placed right-hander Jack Flaherty on the 15-day injured list with right flexor inflammation.
Flaherty pitched four innings in an 8-6 victory at the Chicago Cubs. He allowed three runs and four hits.
The 30-year-old Flaherty is 3-8 with a 4.59 ERA in 19 starts this season. He finalized a two-year, $35 million contract with Detroit in February 2025.
"It wasn't a clear-cut IL when we woke up this morning, and then as the day went on and the more (opinions) we got, the more we realized he wasn't going to pitch in five or six days," manager A.J. Hinch said.
Ty Madden was recalled from Triple-A Toledo, putting a fresh arm in Detroit's weary bullpen. The right-hander replaced Framber Valdez with two outs in the first and pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball in an 11-2 loss at Wrigley Field.

The Los Angeles Dodgers aren't any stranger to acquiring any big names, and have the opportunity to do so at this year's deadline with Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal potentially available.
When asked about buying at the deadline, however, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave an unexpected answer.
"I could almost argue that we're sellers more than buyers," Roberts said, per Dylan Hernandez of The California Post.
The Dodgers—at least over the past couple of seasons—have largely focused on supplementing their roster with lower end pieces rather than hastily adding whichever big-name player is on the market. And it's worked.
In 2024, the Dodgers acquired starter Jack Flaherty along with Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech, both of whom played huge roles in their World Series run that year. They had a similarly solid deadline in 2025, bringing in Ben Rortvedt, a key piece down the stretch last season, and a fantastic prospect in James Tibbs III. They also acquired depth in Alex Call and Brock Stewart.

After a horrible start to the 2026 season, the Detroit Tigers have rebounded nicely, posting the best record in the American League since June 1, leaving themselves in position to challenge for a playoff spot and a division ***** le in the second half of the season.
At the end of May, Detroit had plunged to a 22-38 record through 50 games, 16 games under .500 and 11.5 games behind in the AL Central division. The roster, and the pitching rotation in particular, was devastated by injuries, with Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, Troy Melton, and Justin Verlander all spending time on the injured list. Reese Olson will miss the entire season, while Jack Flaherty and Kenley Jansen struggled early and joined the wounded in June, and Jackson Jobe remains on the 60-day IL.
Despite all that, the Tigers now have a healthy rotation, with Verlander and Jobe hopeful for the second half, and their rotation has the fourth-best ERA in baseball, 3.48, at the All-Star break. Tigers starters also have the fourth best BB/ 9 ratio and the lowest home run ratio in the show at just 0.99 homers per nine innings pitched. They have surrendered the third-lowest batting average and the fifth-lowest Walks plus Hits per inning (WHIP) in the majors. Keeping the ball in the yard and runners off the bases is a recipe for success in any league.
Here is where the Tigers’ rotation, bullpen, and pitching staff rank in the major leagues at the All-Star break:

Aaron Nola was serviceable again but Tim Mayza had one of the worst innings of his nine-year big league career as the Philadelphia Phillies (52-43) unraveled late in a 10-2 drubbing at the hands of the Detroit Tigers (44-50).
Derek Hill led off the third inning with his seventh home run of the year for the game's first run against Tigers' starter, Jack Flaherty.
Delco legend and Rookie of the Year hopeful, Kevin McGonigle, got the Tigers on the board and gave them the lead with a two-run homer off Nola in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1.
An Alec Bohm hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks issued to Bryce Harper and Bryson Stott loaded the bases for Hill, who singled home Harper to bring the score level.
Nola left after five innings and 84 pitches, striking out eight and gave way to Mayza for the sixth. Riley Greene and Matt Vierling walked to set the table for Eduardo Valencia who singled home Greene to retake the lead. Next Zach McKinstry dragged a bunt on the first base side that Mayza hesitated on, eventually throwing to first too late to get McKinstry and allowing Vierling to score from third. One pitch later, James Outman tripled to the gap in right-center to score both runners and extend the lead to four. Three pitches after that, Mayza balked home Outman to complete the damage. The five runs allowed tied Mayza's career high, which he previously surrendered to the Yankees on June 28, 2024 without recording an out.

Talk about opening a series in style as the Tigers beat the Phillies 10-2 to open the last weekend series of the first half.
For the last weekend series before the All-Star Break, the Tigers were squaring off against the club that would be hosting the All-Star Game in the Phillies. They were hoping to ride the high of their series sweep against the A's and keep it up right into the break. To get there, they'd have Jack Flaherty on the mound up against Aaron Nola for the Phillies. Now to see if the Tigers' luck versus .500+ teams would be tested as the Phillies have the second-best record in the NL East.
Kyle Schwarber got a one-out single in the top of the first, but Flaherty quickly brought things around to get the final two outs of the inning. In the home half, Riley Greene got a two-out walk, but the Tigers left him stranded.
In the second, the Phillies went 1-2-3, and the Tigers did the same in the home half. Early to tell, yet, but looks like it could be a set-up for a pitchers' duel.
The Phillies drew first blood in the top of the third with a solo home run from Derek Hill. The next three batters went down in order. In the home half, Jake Rogers took a one-out walk. Then Kevin McGonigle homered, pushing the Tigers nicely into the lead.

The Texas Rangers mustered up just three hits in a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers improved to 39-50 while the Rangers fell to 45-44. While they remain a game over .500, there's no reason for this team to be losing to a squad that is poised to be sellers at the trade deadline.
Detroit starter Jack Flaherty picked up just his second win of the year at the expense of the Rangers. The 30-year-old pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing the Rangers' lone three hits in the process. He struck out five batters, marking the only five strikeouts of the game for the Tigers pitching staff.
Cal Quantrill put in five solid innings of work, but all three runs in this game were allowed in the first two innings. Things didn't go according to plan on the Fourth of July as Quantrill fell to 3-1 thanks to a pair of runs scoring in the first and one more coming across in the second.
Texas committed the game's lone error, but the biggest low of this game was the Rangers offense. On a night where fireworks are so prevalent, there were no signs of life in this one for a Rangers team that continues to fight in the American League West.

Rosters were announced on Wednesday for the All-Star Futures Game, featuring top prospects from all around the league in a showcase game as part of All-Star Week. The Detroit Tigers' representative will be catching prospect Thayron Liranzo, currently working at the Double-A level. He'll be behind the plate for part of the Sunday, July 12 contest at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The game will be broadcast at noon E.T. on NBC.
The sole selection of Liranzo was a little bit of a surprise. The All-Star Futures Game tends to draw on prospects that haven't reached the Triple-A level yet. So it was expected that neither Max Clark or Max Anderson would be selected for the midseason battle of top prospects. On the other hand, the lack of Bryce Rainer is an oversight. The young shortstop is scorching hot with 8 homers, 10 stolen bases, and a .394 on-base percentage for the West Michigan Whitecaps, and generally draws 55 FV grades from national prospect rankings. Instead, Liranzo will be the Tigers only representative.
The switch-hitting, 22-year-old catcher—he'll turn 23 in a week's time— has really come on strong in his second season with the Erie SeaWolves. Most of that development has come behind the plate, so he's not exactly lighting it up offensively, but right now that defensive progress is more important anyway. Liranzo has nine homers and a .337 on-base percentage in 44 games this season. He's still walking a ton, holding a 16.3 percent walk rate in the Eastern League. Of course, while he's starting to trim the strikeouts, he's still holding a 28.6 K-rate as well.
It took Dillon Dingler three tries to really break out of Double-A, so there's still plenty of time for Liranzo, and his defensive improvements now have him looking like much more of a lock to catch at the major league level, even if he's still tracking like a backup who plays some first base, and gets looks at DH and as a pinch-hitter to access his raw power.
The Dominican born catcher was the key piece of the trade that sent Jack Flaherty to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the 2024 trade deadline. With Trey Sweeney largely flaming out, Liranzo is both the key piece, and potentially the only piece acquired in that deadline selloff that looks like it could work out very well for the Tigers. Of course, Sweeney already contributed by helping get the Tigers into the playoffs that year with Javier Báez down for surgery on his hip. It's been bleak since for Sweeney, and he's out for the year after shoulder surgery.

Detroit — The Tigers will get pitcher Jack Flaherty back in the starting rotation for a start in the series finale against the Houston Astros on Sunday, manager AJ Hinch confirmed on Saturday.
Flaherty, who has been on the 15-day injured list since June 13 with a strain of the peroneal tendons in his left foot/ankle, will get back on the active roster with a yet-to-be-announced move on Sunday morning, as it's the first day he's eligible to come back from the IL.
"He's good to go for tomorrow," Hinch said. "We can't make it official until the morning. But yeah, we're fully expecting him to be good to go."
Flaherty completed a rehab **** ignment with Double-A Erie on Tuesday, throwing 5⅔ innings of two-run ball with seven strikeouts.
That outing and the lack of any hang-ups in the days since have Flaherty on the precipice of his return. Hinch was hopeful that Flaherty could make his return on Sunday, and a few days earlier he recalled some words of motivation he gave the pitcher in a postgame handshake line.

As expected, the Detroit Tigers will get starting pitching reinforcements on Sunday, June 28.
Veteran right-hander Jack Flaherty will make his return from the injured list to start Sunday's series finale against the Houston Astros, manager A.J. Hinch announced on Saturday, June 27. Flaherty has been on the injured list since June 13 with abductor inflammation.
"He's good to go for tomorrow," Hinch said. "We can't make it official until the morning, but we are fully expecting him to be good to go."
Flaherty made one rehab start in Double-A Erie, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts across 5⅔ innings on 83 pitches on Tuesday. He returns to the Tigers with a 1-8 record and 5.35 ERA across 15 major league starts this season.
"He's definitely the right amount of being agitated and ready to pitch," Hinch said.

Tarik Skubal scared everyone.
The 29-year-old left-hander kept grabbing at his groin in the third inning, prompting a mound visit from ***** istant athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades and manager A.J. Hinch. He talked with them for a couple of minutes, smiled in reaction to a comment from catcher Jake Rogers, threw one warmup pitch and shared a thumbs-up.
Just like that, Skubal stayed in the game after the injury scare.
COMING SOON? Jack Flaherty completes rehab start, ready to return Sunday vs. Astros
But the reigning two-time American League Cy Young winner allowed four runs across six innings in the Detroit Tigers' 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday, June 24, in the finale of the three-game series at Comerica Park. He surrendered three homers in a single game for the first time since Sept. 30, 2021.

The Florida State are pounding the pavement in an effort to bolster their 2027 recruiting class. Last weekend, four-star running back Jayden Miles was on campus for an official visit.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder has been a top priority for the Seminoles, and his latest trip to Tallahassee has shaken up things in his recruitment. He's still scheduled to visit the Ohio State Buckeyes this weekend, but he will no longer be taking official visits with the LSU Tigers and Kentucky Wildcats.
According to Sam Spiegelman of Rivals, FSU has ascended immensely when it comes to Miles. He has updated his RMP forecast in favor of Florida State landing the Baton Rouge Catholic High School star. Of course, everything will depend on what Ohio State does in their final attempt to persuade Miles, but this is very encouraging news for the Seminoles as they look to secure their first running back pledge in 2027.
Recent quarterback commit, three-star Logan Flaherty, mentioned earlier this week that he'd be visiting FSU throughout the summer to help with recruiting. He was also on campus last weekend when Miles was there, and he has been in contact with him about committing to Florida State. Apparently, he's doing a great job in that respect.
Miles has set his commitment date for July 4. They can't let up this close to the finish line. In fact, they need to dig in even more to get him to commit.
