ALS has taken almost everything from Chris Johnson. But his kids, he writes, give him the strength to keep fighting.
Johnson, a Tennessee ****** ans franchise icon, wrote an open letter to his children via the Players' Tribune published on Thursday, Sept. 10. In the letter, Johnson described his journey from initial symptoms of the motor neuron disease to where he has ended up 18 months later.
The former ****** ans running back detailed how his first alarming symptoms presented: a water bottle feeling heavy on a road trip in March 2025. From there, Johnson said he met with multiple doctors before getting a possible diagnosis of ALS, and he recounted the fear he and his wife felt about the uncertain road ahead.
CHRIS JOHNSON: Former RB getting a top ****** ans' honor after ALS diagnosis
By the time he joined fellow former NFLer Michael Strahan on "Good Morning America" to publicly announce his ALS battle in June of this year, Johnson had lost the ability to speak.

Cam Newton is calling out the commonality between Troy Aikman, Tom Brady, Cris Collinsworth, Kirk Herbstreit, Tony Romo, and J.J. Watt.
After Dan Le Batard highlighted the perpetual cycle of white guys getting most NFL broadcasting jobs, especially in primetime, Newton continued the conversation on his 4th & 1 show, wondering what metric networks use to hire ******* ysts.
"Is it the position you played? Is it your resume as a player?" Newton asked. "Or is it just the likability? Because if we're talking about how did Kirk Herbstreit get that deal? We know how Tom Brady got his deal. How does Tony Romo get his deal? We know how Troy Aikman got his deal. How does Cris Collinsworth get his deal? These are all mainstream color commentators that we see. We're seeing these faces, as if to say Charles Davis is not capable…RGIII is not capable. Jonathan Vilma, is he capable? Jason McCourty, is he capable?"
Newton went on to note Louis Riddick briefly had a primetime ******* yst role on Monday Night Football until ESPN tapped him on the shoulder to say Joe Buck and Troy Aikman were taking over. Newton also cited Nate Burleson and Michael Strahan as NFL players turned media personalities who are more than qualified to be a lead ******* yst on a primetime game.
"Do you not think Ryan Clark is capable? We've seen it," Newton continued. "Brandon Marshall, he's a sharp guy. You got a guy like Emmanuel Acho, who verbally, his vernacular can hold its own with whoever. Do you always have to be a quarterback? Well, J.J. Watt's not a quarterback. Luke Kuechly is not a quarterback. So what's the metric here?"

During the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Michael Strahan was a defensive end for the New York Giants
The athlete-turned-broadcast host is a narrator of 9/11: United We Stand — 25 Years Later, a documentary that looks back on the tragedy and two and a half decades of healing
Strahan forged a close friendship with Pete Davidson, whose father died in the line of duty while helping evacuate people from the Twin Towers
When two planes flew into New York City's Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, Michael Strahan was at his home in Montclair, N.J., having gotten in late the night before from Denver after a Monday Night Football game. He was trying to catch some sleep that morning when he got a call telling him to look out of his window, where he had an enviable view of the New York City skyline.
That day, he tells PEOPLE, "the skyline changed forever."

A popular co-host of ABC's Good Morning America has surprised everybody with big baby news. Michael Strahan, 54, is now a father of five!
According to TMZ on August 27, Strahan and his girlfriend, Kayla Quick, have welcomed their first child together. Sources for the media outlet indicate that the couple welcomed a baby girl. At this point, neither the baby's name nor her arrival date has been publicly disclosed.
As TMZ noted, Strahan and Quick began dating over a decade ago, in 2015. They kept their relationship quite private over the years, rarely making public appearances together or gushing over one another on social media.
Strahan is already a father to three other daughters and one son. His oldest two children, Tanita and Michael Jr., are Strahan's with his first wife, Wanda Hutchins. In 2024, Tanita welcomed her first child, a son she named Onyx, making Strahan a grandfather for the first time.
The Good Morning America star and former professional football player later welcomed twin daughters, Isabella and Sophia, with his second wife, Jean Muggli.

Michael Strahan is reportedly a father of five!
The "Good Morning America" host, 54, and girlfriend Kayla Quick quietly welcomed their first child together, a daughter, earlier this year, according to TMZ. Strahan is also dad to daughter Tanita, 34, and son Michael Jr., 31, whom he shares with ex-wife Wanda Hutchins, and twins Sophia and Isabella, 21, with ex-wife Jean Muggli.
The former New York Giants player and Quick, who founded wellness supplement brand FIZZNESS, were first romantically linked in 2015. In the years since, they have largely kept their relationship under wraps.
In 2023, they made a rare public appearance together when Quick attended a ceremony honoring Strahan as he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Strahan has been outspoken about his kids in the past, sharing in 2025 that his daughter Isabella Strahan had been diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor, two years prior. She appeared alongside her dad on "GMA" at the time, explaining how she had to have emergency surgery to remove the golf ball-sized mass.

Beach ready! Michael Strahan's daughter, Isabella, showed off her bikini body while on a vacation in the Bahamas.
"Day and night," she captioned the Instagram post on August 14. It was tagged Nassau, Bahamas.
The first photo featured Isabella in a blue bikini with a green wrap around her waist. She smiled and held onto her sunglasses on her face as she wore her hair up in a bun. Isabella stood in front of a grassy path as someone snapped a photo of her.
The other photos in her carousel featured palm trees behind a pool, as well as the big white house she's staying in. There was another photo of the beach at night with a boat in the background.
Isabella shared another photo of her in a bikini. This time, it was orange with red and yellow stripes. She wore a long, orange netted wrap as she stood on the beach. Isabella's hair was still in a bun, but this time she turned her head to the side and smiled with her eyes closed.

Former Giants star Michael Strahan has been a hit in the media industry, from his work as an NFL ******* yst to his daytime talk show roles, but he's come under fire for a high-profile interview he conducted in June.
Strahan helped former ******* ans running back Chris Johnson break the news of an ALS diagnosis, which the 2,000-yard rusher received last year but didn't disclose until his pre-taped talk with Strahan in June.
It's what Strahan didn't ask that is earning him some criticism — and has the former single-season sack leader defending himself.

Nolan Wells' parents are speaking out for the first time on their grief and lingering questions after the 18-year-old was found dead following his disappearance over the July 4 weekend. Christine and Elmore Wonsley, along with their attorney Ben Crump, sat with "Good Morning America" host Michael Strahan for an emotional interview on July 10 in which they reflected on their sorrow over Wells' loss and explained their confusion about what led to his death. Wells was last seen on Mississippi's Horn Island during a holiday boating trip with friends. Crump previously confirmed to NBC News that Christine had reported her son missing that night when he didn't return with the others in his group. A two-day search culminated in a park ranger finding Wells' body ashore on the island. A cause of death is yet to be determined, but Crump has said that the Wonsleys don't accept that their son could have drowned accidentally and are launching an independent investigation into what happened. Both Christine and Elmore explained on "GMA" that they don't understand why Wells would have chosen to stay on the island without his friends. "We always taught him that if you go with a group, you stay with a group," Elmore said. "If you go with five, you come back with five. Do not separate from the group. Because I always said, 'Safety is in numbers.' So he knew to stay with this group, so why would he split from the group? I don't know." Per The ****** ociated Press, Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said that Wells' friends are cooperating with authorities. "From the people we've talked to, it sounds like he chose to stay on the island with the ****** umption that he was going to ride back to the mainland with someone else," he told the outlet of Wells. Crump, however, claims that there are inconsistent accounts about whether Wells intended to join his friends back to the mainland. Local police are also asking for anyone who was on Horn Island on July 4 to turn in possible photos or videos of Wells, while Crump and the Wonsleys shared hope to uncover more details through a forensic ****** ysis of Wells' phone. Wells would have turned 19 in August and was preparing to start the new football season at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he was a wide receiver.

The high-society event of this millennium took place at Madison Square Garden this weekend and, as expected, UFL head of officiating Dean Blandino stole the show.
Blandino sported a black three-piece morning suit with a silver vest and black tie to the wedding of global pop superstar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce on Saturday, clearly intent on turning heads while flanked by his NFL on Fox colleagues Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen.
Blandino was one of many sports media A-listers to witness the nuptials of Swift and Kelce, whose romance has elevated the couple to status as America's de facto royal family.
In addition to Fox's lead NFL play-by-play voice Kevin Burkhardt and No. 2 NFL ****** yst Greg Olsen, who were pictured with ref icon Dean Blandino at a reception, Fox's lead NFL ****** yst Tom Brady attended the July 4th affair, as did sideline reporter Erin Andrews, studio host Charissa Thompson, and studio ****** ysts Michael Strahan, Rob Gronkowski, and Julian Edelman.
Outside the Fox family, plenty of other sports media heavy-hitters made the cut.

A performance from Stevie Nicks, personal vows, high school friends and a "garden inside the Garden": details are slowly emerging about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's star-studded wedding in New York.
The pop superstar and the three-time NFL Super Bowl champion, both 36, tied the knot on Friday at the storied Madison Square Garden under heavy security, with the 1,000 or so attendees reportedly required to sign non-disclosure agreements.
The singer's publicist Tree Paine confirmed the marriage took place in a short statement and gave a few details, such as the couple's choice of ensembles from Christian Dior, shoes from Christian Louboutin and Cartier jewelry.
But nuggets of information surfaced on Saturday, starting with the anchors of ABC's "Good Morning America" news broadcast -- Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and retired NFL legend Michael Strahan -- describing their experience at the party.
Stephanopoulos, a onetime aide to former president Bill Clinton who pivoted to journalism more than two decades ago, said the ceremony was "as intimate as it could possibly be, given that it was Madison Square Garden" -- the iconic sports arena.

Despite the reported no-phones policy at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Friday wedding, details of the "intimate" Madison Square Garden ceremony are starting to emerge from those who were inside the exclusive event.
While Swift and Kelce have remained silent so far about the proceedings, AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron, Maren Morris and Good Morning America hosts Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan were among those who shared their accounts of what happened in the arena.

New Orleans Saints legend Steve Gleason is showing his support for former NFL running back Chris Johnson, who revealed this week during an interview with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America that he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2025.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells (motor neurons) in the brain and spinal cord. As the motor neurons deteriorate, the brain gradually loses its ability to communicate with muscles, resulting in weakness, twitching, difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing.
Sadly, Gleason knows that journey all too well. Diagnosed with ALS in 2011, he has spent the past 15 years proving that a diagnosis does not define a person. Through the work of his foundation, Team Gleason, he has dedicated his life to helping people with ALS not only live, but thrive, while also providing hope, advocacy, and vital resources to countless individuals and families affected by the disease.
To date, Team Gleason has provided more than $65 million in support to improve quality of life for people living with ALS through adventure, technology, equipment, and care services, creating a more empowering and meaningful life experience. Gleason’s “No White Flags” philosophy has grown beyond a slogan into a way of life.
Gleason shared that exact sentiment in a message to Johnson via his Twitter/X and Instagram accounts.

In choosing to go public with his ALS diagnosis, former NFL running back Chris Johnson chose not to focus on the link between the disease and football.
At one level, it didn't really need to be mentioned. The connection has been established. For example, ALS is one of the specific conditions (along with Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, early and moderate dementia, and certain cases of CTE diagnoses after death) that automatically qualified retired players (as of July 7, 2014) for no-questions-asked compensation from the NFL's unlimited concussion settlement fund. And, in 2021, a study of all "19,423 NFL athletes who debuted between 1960 and 2019 and played 1 or more professional game" resulted in a finding that the risks of developing ALS "were nearly 4 times as high as those of the general population."
At another level, it was more than a bit awkward that the segment on Good Morning America didn't mention the ties between ALS and football, either during or after the Johnson interview was televised.
It came close, a couple of times. Johnson's wife, Brittany, explained that she believed his initial symptoms (weakness in his right hand) may have been the result of a pinched nerve from playing football. And Michael Strahan's narration of the piece addressed the belief that Johnson has a case of "sporadic ALS," which happens with no family history of the illness. Given that, as Strahan said, 90 percent of all ALS cases are sporadic and basically random, the connection to football makes it not quite as random as it would be for someone who didn't play.
Via Sean Keeley of Awful Announcing, Jeff Pearlman teed off on the failure to mention the link between ALS and football. (Here's Pearlman's full video.)
