These were the highlights of Devdutt Padikkal's unbeaten 142 off 164 ****** at the Nondescript Cricket Club in Colombo on Saturday. The classy left-hander was not a starter when the squad was picked for the series. Still, the moment team management received the update on Sai Sudharsan's niggle, all efforts focused on keeping Padikkal ready for the opportunity. When the chance came, he delivered. And how.
It wasn't a raging turner, nor were the opposition spinners posing tough questions, but runs always do the confidence a world of good, especially when they coincide with the update on Sudharsan. Since coming into bat in the first over of the second day's play, Padikkal exuded confidence and scored his runs at a brisk pace even when KL Rahul was happy to buy time at the other end.
He controlled the ball and showed equal confidence against both spin and pace, remaining unfazed by the off-spin challenge when Ramesh Mendis and Keshara Nuwantha bowled in tandem. He met most ****** under his eyes, and the side-on view of his big strides and the balance with which he operated made it a treat. The 26-year-old hasn't featured in a multi-day fixture for India since November 2024 but has been making the right noise with the India A side and Karnataka in the domestic circuit.

Before the fixture got underway, there was optimism around Sudharsan joining the camp, if not in Colombo, then in Galle. Little did Padikkal know that as he closed in on a brilliant century, Sudharsan's hopes of boarding the flight evaporated.
Come August 15, India won't need to sweat much over the No. 3 position with Padikkal ready and raring to go. A lot of hard work went on behind the scenes, which was reflected in the ease with which he operated.
Back in 2024, chief selector Ajit Agarkar's addition of Padikkal to India's Test squad for the home series against England was a surprise pick. The Indian camp was hit by injury concerns, and KL Rahul's unavailability opened the door for Padikkal, who then made his debut in Dharamsala. One knock in the Ranji Trophy was all it took for the chairman to fast-track the left-hander into the set-up. Padikkal would have certainly thanked his stars that Agarkar's rare appearance for domestic games included the Tamil Nadu vs Karnataka game in Chennai.

MUMBAI: In a big blow to India, their in-form No. 3 batter Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series in Sri Lanka due to a toe injury, TOI has exclusively learnt.
Sudharsan did not take the flight when the Indian team took off from Mumbai for Sri Lanka on Tuesday (August 4), and thus missed the ongoing three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, which began on Friday (August 8). Sudharsan's untimely injury could open the door for middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan, who has consistently done well for Mumbai in domestic cricket over the past few years.
"Sai has been at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for the past few days to undergo treatment for his toe injury. His injury has almost healed, and he was thus confident that he would be declared fit today and travel to Sri Lanka. However, he still hasn't sufficiently recovered from his injury to be declared completely fit for this series. His recovery may take slightly longer," a source in the BCCI told TOI on Saturday.
It's learnt that the CoE's medical team has now become extra cautious after a few cases emerged, pacer Harshit Rana being a classic example, of players breaking down despite being cleared by the BCCI facility.
The left-hander's injury is a big setback for India considering the fact that he had slammed back-to-back centuries for India A during their shadow tour of Sri Lanka last month. A prolific batter for Gujarat ******* ans, where he opened alongside India's Test captain Shubman Gill in the IPL, Sudharsan is regarded as a key member of the Test side, with India's team management looking to give him an extended run at No. 3. The Tamil Nadu batter has featured in seven Tests and scored 383 runs at an average of 39, with three half-centuries.
However, providing huge relief to India on a day when Sudharsan was ruled out, replacing him at the critical and pivotal No. 3 spot, Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal slammed an unbeaten century (103 not out at the time of writing this) and is thus the favourite to bat at the one-down position in the opening Test of the series in Galle, which begins on August 15. Ironically, Padikkal too is a left-hander.
Meanwhile, in a relief for India, it's learnt that India's Test captain Shubman Gill's finger injury, which he suffered while batting in the nets, is "minor," and he will be fit in time for the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The finger injury forced Gill to miss the ongoing warm-up match as a precautionary measure.
"Gill's injury isn't serious. It's like a bruise you get when your finger gets stuck in the door. He will be fine soon," a source tracking developments told this paper.

Ronnie Fletcher, uncle to 16 children rescued in Vinton County, Ohio, last week, said the rest of the family was "horrified."

"Horrified. Worried about the kids. It's hard to explain the action when you're distant family," Fletcher told NewsNation affiliate WOWK. "'What can I do to help?' That was the original reaction to it."
Fletcher referred to his family as distant because he said they were not close, though he said he is the children's uncle.

Jul. 1—More than 160 special needs athletes and their families are coming to Fairfield to participate in the Miracle Series.
Adult and youth athletes from Massachusetts, New Jersey, Iowa, New York, and Pennsylvania are headed to the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields July 9-12.
The weekend is hosted by the Joe Nuxhall Foundation and Miracle League Fields in conjunction with Casey's Clubhouse — the adaptive sports organization in Pittsburgh founded by Cincinnati Reds Hall of famer 'The Mayor' Sean Casey.
"We are super excited to see it grow. We've only hosted one program," said Tyler Bradshaw, executive director of the Nuxhall Foundation.
"We first partnered with Sean in 2022 and since then we've developed an informal network of Miracle leagues and adaptive sports organizations."
Adult and youth athletes from Massachusetts, New Jersey, Iowa, New York, and Pennsylvania are headed to the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields July 9-12.
