WNBA reverses Angel Reese suspension decision after Dream loss originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Angel Reese will be available for the Atlanta Dream's next game after the WNBA reversed a call that initially carried an automatic suspension. Reese was **** sed her eighth technical foul of the season during the fourth quarter of Atlanta's 101-83 loss to the Portland Fire on Friday. Under WNBA rules, that total would have resulted in a one-game suspension for Sunday's matchup with the Minnesota Lynx.
The league reviewed the play after the game and rescinded the technical foul, ESPN's Alexa Philippou reported on X. Reese was returned to seven technical fouls and avoided the suspension. The play occurred after Reese and Portland guard Carla Leite became tangled while battling for rebounding position. Reese appeared to push Leite as the two separated, prompting officials to issue the technical.
That decision did not survive the league's review.
Although Reese escaped an immediate punishment, she has little room for error over the remainder of the regular season. Her next technical foul would again be her eighth, automatically triggering a one-game suspension. Additional technicals later in the season could lead to further suspensions under the WNBA's escalating disciplinary system.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are moving one of their top prospects one step closer to the big leagues.
Pitcher Cam Leiter was promoted from Class-A Ontario to advanced Class-A Great Lakers on Thursday, Aug. 20. Leiter is the nephew of former major league pitchers Al and Mark Leiter. Two of his cousins, Mark Leiter Jr. and Jack Leiter, have already reached the major leagues.
Leiter was the Dodgers' second-round draft pick (65th overall) last year out of Florida State. For someone with such a long family pedigree in professional baseball, the Dodgers had relatively little idea what to expect from Leiter in 2026.

The right-hander didn't pitch at all in 2025, his junior year of college, after undergoing surgery to clean up his shoulder in October 2024.

The Texas Rangers today purchased the contract of infielder Jonah Bride, the team announced today. To make room for Bride on the active roster, the Rangers optioned outfielder Alejandro Osuna to AAA Round Rock. To make room for Bride on the 40 man roster, the Rangers transferred pitcher Jake Leiter from the 15 day injured list to the 60 day injured list.
Bride is a 30 year old who played for Skip Schumaker in Miami in 2024, when he had a career best season, slashing .276/.357/.461 while playing first, second and third base. He has an overall career .221/.311/.313 line, however, which is why he signed a minor league deal with the Rangers this past offseason and has spent the year at Round Rock.
Bride's overall slash line for Round Rock is a rather pedestrian .282/.401/.425 in 431 plate appearances this season. However, he has put up a very impressive .388/.473/.669 slash line against lefthanded pitchers, which is why the Rangers, who are kind of desperate for a righthanded bench bat, have brought him up. Interestingly, Bride has reverse splits in the majors for his career, slashing .194/.295/.228 against lefties in 272 plate appearances in the bigs, against .238/.321/.367 against righthanded pitchers.
Osuna has played sparingly as of late, getting just one start in the month of April and mainly being used for pinch hitting duties. He's not a good fit for the roster, as currently constructed, given that he's a lefthanded hitting outfielder on the bench, and the Rangers need a righthanded hitting bench outfielder, not a lefthanded hitting one. It seems like this might have been an area the team would have wanted to try to address at the deadline, were it not for the fact that Ray Davis is apparently claiming that the team is po' like Kenny's family.
Bride will presumably fill in until Josh Jung returns, ****** uming Jung does return at some point this season.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers swapped right-handed relievers on the 15-day injured list on Saturday, placing Jakob Junis on the IL with a right hip impingement and activating 40-year-old Chris Martin after his second stint out because of a right shoulder issue.
Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young also said left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks would have season-ending surgery for a flexor tendon strain. Beeks was close to being activated from the IL after being out since June 10 with lower back spasms when he started having elbow soreness during his rehab.
Junis has been one of the team's most reliable relievers, going 1-1 with five saves and a 2.80 ERA over 35 1/3 innings in 31 appearances. Young expressed hope that Junis would be out for only the 15-day period.
Martin, who is 1-1 with a 7.84 ERA in 12 games this season, missed 31 games from mid-April to mid-May and then 30 more games that included all of June because of a right shoulder impingement. Beeks was 2-1 with a 3.81 ERA in 29 appearances.
The shuffling of relievers came on the same day that right-handed starter Jack Leiter said he felt good in his recovery and hoped to pitch again this season after arthroscopic surgery June 23 to remove an extra but unneeded bone from behind his right ankle bone.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sonia Citron scored 32 points, including the basket that put her team ahead to stay with 21.4 seconds left, and the Washington Mystics held off the Portland Fire 124-123 on Sunday in four overtimes — tying the longest game in WNBA history.
The other four-overtime game was July 3, 2001, when Washington beat Seattle 72-69.
Michaela Onyenwere scored 30 points and Kiki Iriafen added 27 for the Mystics (9-9), who became the first team in league history to have three players score at least 27 points in the same game.
Carla Leite — who banked in a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in regulation and sent the game to overtime — led Portland with 32 points. Sarah Ashlee Barker scored 25 and Megan Gustafson added 20 for the Fire (8-12).
The game had 21 ties and 12 lead changes — and took 3 hours, 35 minutes in real time.

Good morning.
Shawn McFarland writes about what we learned about the Texas Rangers over the last week which is that they continue to be unable to beat bad teams while holding up well against good teams.
MLB dot com’s John Henry writes about Wyatt Langford heating up after a forgettable first couple of months to the season.
McFarland writes that a healthy and productive Langford changes the dynamic for the Rangers and their oftentimes threatless lineup.
Jeff Wilson writes that the Rangers made it nearly half a season before a starting pitcher hit the IL, with an injury from late April finally doing Jack Leiter in.

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jack Leiter has been placed on the injured list with a left ankle injury, the team announced today. To take his place on the active roster, the Rangers have recalled pitcher Jose Corniell.
Leiter had been dealing with the ankle issue for most of the season, but reportedly made it worse slipping on the on deck circle in the Rangers' April contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates. You remember the play, I'm sure, but in case you need a reminder, here it is:
View Link
The general reaction to the play at the time was, oh ****** , now Jack Leiter is hurt. I think most of us of were surprised he even stayed in the game. Per Chris Young, Leiter felt he could pitch through the issue, but scans after his last outing showed it had gotten worse, so he's being shut down so the ankle can heal.
One might wonder whether the Rangers would have made this move sooner if they had a viable option to replace Leiter in the rotation. Jacob Latz, who was the de facto sixth starter early on, has taken on the closer role, and given the injuries the bullpen is dealing with currently, along with ineffectiveness by a lot of the non-Latz relievers, trying to stretch him out and have him starting again isn't realistic.

“People are going to get to see a lot of the beauty of Seattle when they walk up and down here,” says Molly.
