While all drugs sold to American consumers face a rigorous approval process, that's not the case when it comes to supplements. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not approve supplements, and while there are some limits to the claims that can be made by companies in this ******* e, there's a fair amount of latitude.
"The manufacturer must have substantiation that the claim is truthful and not misleading and must submit a notification with the text of the claim to FDA no later than 30 days after marketing the dietary supplement with the claim. If a dietary supplement label includes such a claim, it must state in a 'disclaimer' that FDA has not evaluated the claim," according to the FDA website.
Supplement makers can make certain structure/function claims without FDA preapproval, as long as they have substantiation that the claims are truthful and not misleading, and that they meet the agency's other requirements.
"The disclaimer must also state that the dietary supplement product is not intended to 'diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease,' because only a drug can legally make such a claim," the federal agency shared.
It's a legal grey area that allows supplements to advertise that they can help with fitness, hair growth, sleep, and your ability to focus.

Left-hander Jacob Latz is the Texas Rangers’ lone representative at the 2026 All-Star Game, five years after his MLB debut and nine years after he was drafted.
The Jacob Latz All-Star story doesn’t begin at the end of spring training, when he was informed that he had lost out in the battle to be the Texas Rangers‘ fifth starter. Rather than sulk, he channeled his disappointment into some of the finest relief work in the American League.
This isn’t his first time on the road less traveled, encountering potholes and detours since his freshman year of college. Ultimately, missing out on the rotation was just another instance in which his career has been redirected.
It’s been that way since Latz left high school in Illinois. Just getting drafted by the Rangers out of college was a **** py ride, as injuries, dietary issues and an eligibility issue limited him to only a handful of innings over three seasons at LSU and Kent State.
Even his MLB debut, in 2021, was unusual. He was the Rangers’ starting pitcher only because the team was dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19. Latz didn’t pitch in the majors again until September 2023, just in time to earn a World Series ring.

(NewsNation) — Colorectal cancer is ***** ociated with certain microbiomes that produce microbial signatures that can be detected by a machine-learning algorithm, new research finds.
A meta-analysis conducted by European researchers examined almost 6,800 microbiome profiles, finding a microbial signature that is linked to colorectal cancer, which could lead to tests that ***** s risk and prevent cancer.
Colorectal cancer has been on the rise in younger people, even as it has dropped in older adults. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths, with death rates also growing among younger people who are not routinely screened the way older adults are.

According to the Financial Times, the consumer goods giant has set its sights on acquiring Thorne, a U.S. dietary supplements brand. L Catterton, Thorne's private equity owner, has initiated a sale process that has attracted multiple potential buyers, of which Unilever is one.
The asking price, $4 billion, would dwarf the $680 million L Catterton paid to take Thorne private in 2023 — a deal that would yield enormous gains for the LVMH-backed firm. Thorne, which has been in operation since 1984, is on track for $650 million in annual revenues and offers products such as magnesium and omega-3 supplements. Since coming under L Catterton's control, Thorne has posted compounded annual revenue growth exceeding 30 percent.
Consumer healthcare group Haleon has also submitted a bid for Thorne, according to Reuters. A Haleon spokesperson said the company does not comment on rumor or speculation. Unilever and L Catterton both declined to comment.
Buying Thorne would add to a string of wellness purchases Unilever has made in recent years, having brought Liquid IV, Nutrafol, Olly, SmartyPants, and Grüns — the last acquired in April — into its portfolio. Unilever's wellbeing unit recorded double-digit revenue growth in 2025.
CEO Fernando Fernandez, who took the role in March 2025, has been reshaping Unilever's portfolio toward beauty and wellness. The announcement of a March deal merging Unilever's food division with U.S. spice giant McCormick wiped 7 percent off the company's share price, with shareholders voicing worry about how much debt the new entity — in which Unilever will own a 65 percent stake — would carry.
