Dallas Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson had two catches for 13 yards in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers.
SOURCE: USA TODAY
Why It Matters: Ferguson, a University of Wisconsin alum, took a back seat to Brevyn Spann-Ford (4-35-0) and Ryan Flournoy (7-40-1) on Sunday night, and it ended with him finishing below 20 yards receiving for a third straight week. A legit top-10 fantasy tight end at times in his career, Ferguson is currently no more than a touchdown-or-bust lottery ticket on the outskirts of TE2 value.

The Cowboys spent their mini-bye week promising changes aplenty, and several were obvious as Sunday's Week 6 contest got underway: Mike Pettine as a senior defensive ***** istant, Malachi Lawrence announced pregame as a starter over Donovan Ezeiruaku, Brevyn Spann-Ford getting at least the ceremonial intro-yourself-on-TV first-snap nod over Jake Ferguson.
But literally starting with the opening kick, it was just more of the same for the free-falling Cowboys... only worse. The Cowboys dropped the game by a 23-13 score that was never really that close and saw their season record sink to 2-4, a mark that on paper gives them far more respectability than they deserve.
With Christian Parker still on the sidelines but Pettine observing from the coaches' booth (on his sixth day on the job), the unit seemed to show a bit more hustle and fire, but the Cowboys' defensive results nevertheless looked awfully similar to their first five games.
In a dominant first half that was enough to decide the night, Green Bay handily won the time of possession battle, racked up 15 first downs, converted nine of their 10 third-down plays, didn't punt at all, and amassed 225 yards of offense, at a clip of almost six yards per snap.
The Packers held onto the ball for 6:30 on their opening possession, a 14-play drive that actually covered 105 yards and landed in the end zone. A 15-play drive going for 83 yards and eating up 8:17 would soon follow, further continuing a trend of the Dallas defense being unable to get themselves off the field. Along the way, they allowed Green Bay to convert to a pair of 3rd-and-13s, a pair of 3rd-and-8s, and a pair of 3rd-and-6s.

Breakout loading. At least that's what the Dallas Cowboys hope after they inked tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford and receiver Ryan Flournoy to a pair of extensions this week. In a break from the norm, the Cowboys went out on a limb and played the speculation market. Channeling his inner oilman, owner Jerry Jones has put his money where his mouth is and bet big on breakouts.
In previous years, it was the Cowboys waiting until after a breakout was achieved before extensions were offered. Terence Steele was signed to a five-year, $82,500,000 deal after his breakout season in 2022. Jaylon Smith was regrettably signed to a five-year, $63,750,000 extension after his breakout season in 2018. And even Dak Prescott, Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland got signed after already establishing themselves high among the NFL hierarchy.
It doesn't take Wallstreet stockbroker to know investing after something has already blown up has its drawbacks. Sure, seeing success insulates from risk, but it also means investors are buying high. Good deals are made through speculation. They come with risk since they're predictive rather than proven, but they also come at a much lower price and with a much higher upside.
After displaying significant growth in 2025, Flournoy has been a media and fan favorite to breakout in a big way this season. Signing a one-year, $6M extension, Flournoy retains his Cowboydom through the 2027 season. This is important because if George Pickens leaves after the current season, Flournoy ensures a level of continuity amongst the top receiver ranks.
Sources: The #cowboys and WR Ryan Flournoy have agreed to a 1-year contract extension worth up to $6M.
Flournoy is coming off a career year with 40 catches for 475 and 4 TDs. He’s expected to have an even bigger role in the offense this season as the solidified WR3 and now gets… pic.twitter.com/p04Q0S80A9

Cowboys tight end Princeton Fant was carted off from Monday's practice after an apparent left knee injury.
Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports Fant was scheduled for an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.
The Cowboys also have Jake Ferguson, Brevyn Spann-Ford and Luke Schoonmaker at the position.
Fant took a knee-to-knee hit after being blocked backward into running back Israel Abanikanda during the Cowboys' first padded practice of training camp. He was unable to put weight on his left leg, requiring a cart to leave the field.
Fant signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee in 2023. He has appeared in 11 games in three seasons, playing mostly on special teams.

The Dallas Cowboys have been dealing with their fair share of training camp injuries a week into their trek to Oxnard, CA. Fortunately things have generally landed on the temporary side for most of the affected. On Monday, they had to add another name to the list as tight end Princeton Fant was forced to leave practice.
On the first day of padded work, Fant had to be helped off and eventually he was escorted from the field on a cart. He was injured while blocking edge rusher Sam Williams, who pushed him back into the accelerating running back Israel Abanikanda.
Fant is battling to be a depth piece for the Cowboys at a position without much certainty behind starter Jake Ferguson and No. 2 Brevyn Spann-Ford. Neither of the sure things for the roster offer tremendous offensive potential, leading to a lot of opportunity for TE3 and practice squad depth.
That's where Fant has existed since being an undrafted free agent in 2023 out of Tennessee where he teamed up with current teammate, QB Joe Milton. Fant has spent three seasons on the practice squad, experiencing a couple game-day activations to help when injuries arose, but he's fought to maintain a place on the roster. There was one stretch, in the back half of the 2024 season, where he was fully promoted to the 53-man roster.
This year he's competing with the likes of UDFAs Michael Trigg (Baylor) and DJ Rogers (TCU).

Real football is back for the Dallas Cowboys, who are set to take the field for the first time in training camp on Wednesday. Most of the roster is set, with a conservative number of around 35 players all but guaranteed to make the team.
That leaves almost 20 roster spots up for grabs. Anything can happen this summer in Oxnard, and odd things occur annually in training camp, so there are some veterans who might be surprise cuts for the Cowboys. Here are four players who could be shocking releases if they don't perform well in camp.
The offense doesn't have many depth issues, but tight end is a position where Dallas could be looking for more quality. The starter is Jake Ferguson, and the No. 2 option now appears to be Brevyn Spann-Ford, who has taken over for Luke Schoonmaker in the pecking order. While neither excelled as a receiver in the offense, Spann-Ford is a much better blocker.

Among those who could push Schoonmaker off the roster are undrafted free agent TE Michael Trigg, who brings an intriguing skill set as a receiver, or Princeton Fant, who's managed to stick around for the last two seasons.

For the Dallas Cowboys and their owner, Jerry Jones, the hope is always that the changes made will improve the product on the field. Every team heading into training camp will have questions to answer, and the Dallas Cowboys are first on our list with 3 of the biggest ones. This will be an ongoing series for the next couple of weeks until camp starts, and answers start to reveal themselves in real time.
Another season of change for the Dallas Cowboys. Will it make a difference this time around to end the drought? Jerry Jones sure hopes so. Dallas hasn't had a **** le in 30 years, and Jerry Jones promised to look in the mirror and make much-needed dramatic changes. The 34-year-old Christian Parker, who has no defensive coordinator experience, must embody the change upfront. Veterans were added, and Dak Prescott is back and healthy, running a new scheme. We shall see.
I wouldn't worry about whether CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens can coexist long-term. I'm more concerned about whether you can keep them happy with the culture and get them to commit long-term. They declined to negotiate with Pickens and instead slapped him with the franchise tag. If Dak Prescott continues to spread the ball around, he should be able to keep them happy, but it comes at a cost: winning in the playoffs or a Super Bowl **** le.
Tight end Jake Ferguson's role could diminish during the upcoming season. Even after signing a four-year, $52 million extension, former undrafted free agent Brevyn Spann-Ford is a better blocker and could have a major impact on the Cowboys' offense in 2026.
