WAUSAU — The Wausau West baseball team has named former Concordia University St. Paul baseball player and area native James Kramer the program's new head baseball coach.
Kramer, a Wausau West graduate, joins the Warriors staff and brings valuable college playing and coaching experience. He spent two seasons on Concordia's staff after his playing career concluded, then six seasons as part of the Minnesota Twins clubhouse staff.
Wausau West Athletic Director BJ Brandt felt his baseball experience in combination with his direct ties to the program were too sweet to forgo.

"Kramer is a great fit for our program," Brandt said. "He knows our community, our program, and what it means to wear a Warrior uniform. His college playing and coaching experience and his commitment to developing young athletes in our community will be a great benefit to Wausau West Baseball."

WESTON − Opening ceremonies for the National Horseshoe Pitchers ****** ociation World Tournament will take place at 11 a.m. July 13 at Greenheck Turner Community Center in Weston, marking the start of nearly two weeks of competition.
The event is expected to draw athletes, families and fans to central Wisconsin, according to a community announcement, as competitors participate in a wide range of divisions and tournaments.
The competition runs July 13-25 at the community center, 6400 Alderson St. in Weston, and will feature preliminary rounds in men's, women's, elder, junior and cadet classes before championship play begins later in the schedule.
Opening ceremonies are planned between morning and afternoon pitching sessions on July 13, offering the public a closer look at the scale and tradition of the sport.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for our community to welcome athletes and visitors from across the world and to showcase Greater Wausau as a place built for sports, outdoor recreation and hospitality," said Tim White, executive director of Visit Wausau. "The opening ceremonies are a great moment for the public to see the scale of this event and the tradition behind competitive horseshoe pitching."

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — Michael Alfonso, the 26-year-old son-in-law of U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, has an answer for people who say he doesn't have the experience necessary to join Congress as its youngest member.
He points to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
"They were 26 when they were first elected to public office," said Alfonso, a Republican.
Alfonso is trying to ride support from his father-in-law to win his old House seat in rural northern Wisconsin. Duffy has repeatedly jetted back to the district to campaign and raise money for Alfonso, and he's tapped $1 million from his old congressional account to support Alfonso's candidacy.
Alfonso has also scored the endorsement of President Donald Trump, who called him a "MAGA warrior." But to Alfonso's detractors, including prominent Republicans in the 7th Congressional District, he's too young and inexperienced for the job.

The Northwoods Softball League has established itself as one of the top collegiate summer leagues, and for the first time, the Wisconsin-based league will hold an all-star game on Saturday, July 11.
The inaugural contest will feature three members of the Washington Huskies, who have put together strong seasons against top competition.

Her .530 batting average, 10 home runs, which also earned her a spot in the home run challenge, and 33 runs batted in all lead the league, while she's also posted 40 runs, 35 hits, and 16 walks with a 1.592 OPS, as part of a stellar summer that should give her ample momentum to bring back to coach Heather Tarr and the Huskies.
After transferring from Arizona to Washington, the former five-star recruit struggled in her first year on Montlake to the tune of a 6.26 ERA and 1.40 WHIP, but has found her stride alongside Carroll with the Madison Night Mares. Across 8 appearances and 29 1/3 innings pitched, Maddox holds a 4-0 record with a save, while her 4.06 ERA ranks No. 3 in the league.
The former MaxPreps Oklahoma State Player of the Year has put together a promising campaign with the Wausau Ignite. Over 18 games, she's posted a .349 batting average and 1.099 OPS with 22 hits, 4 home runs, 20 RBI, 19 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases.
