It's been a tough offseason for the Blue Jackets, who've been putting out fires ever since it became public in late June that stars Zach Werenski and Kirill Marchenko weren't planning to stay long-term.
More: Hockey fans, internet react to Blue Jackets radio broadcast changes
There have also been lengthy negotiations with key restricted free agents. Jet Greaves and Cole Sillinger nearly reached arbitration hearings, and Adam Fantilli remains unsigned, so it's been a battle for president/general manager Don Waddell to keep the arrow pointed in the right direction.
And that's just the hockey side.
The Blue Jackets' business side is also taking hits with decisions to part ways with longtime radio voice Bob McElligott and team reporter Jeff Svoboda, who'd become team ambassadors in their respective roles. Those moves followed on the heels of the Jackets announcing their TV broadcast will shift from FanDuel to an NHL Productions product.

Goaltender Jet Greaves has returned for the Blue Jackets with a three-year contract extension, so the focus now shifts to unsigned forwards Adam Fantilli and Cole Sillinger.
More: What Jet Greaves' $15 million extension means for the Columbus Blue Jackets
Sillinger, 23, has an arbitration hearing July 27 in Toronto, where Blue Jackets president/general manager Don Waddell and Greaves finally reached a $15 million pact less than an hour before a July 23 hearing. Fantilli, 21, is vacationing in Italy while his agent, Pat Brisson, continues talks with Waddell during the star center's first dabble in restricted free agency.
Waddell, who has roughly $17 million left in salary-cap ****** e, is confident both deals will get done without too many snags, starting with Sillinger.
"We've made progress from both sides, so I'm pretty confident we'll get that resolved before [July 27]," Waddell said. "They want to make a deal. We want to make a deal."

John Davidson is keeping his toe in the NHL pool, but the longtime executive and former TV ******* yst is no longer with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Blue Jackets' senior adviser since May 2024 and president of hockey operations in two stints before that is now senior adviser for the Buffalo Sabres, who announced the hiring July 13. The move reunites Davidson, 73, with former Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, the Sabres' GM whom Davidson hired for that role in Columbus in 2013.
Davidson also fired Kekalainen on Feb. 15, 2024, after the two signed off on the hiring of Mike Babcock as head coach, a stint that lasted just 78 days after the controversial coach was hired July 1, 2023, to succeed Brad Larsen.
Babcock resigned amid allegations that he violated players' privacy by pressuring them to show him photos on their cellphones. It ultimately led to an investigation by the NHL Players' ******* ociation followed by Kekalainen and Davidson taking the fall, with the former's eventual firing and the latter moving to a senior advisory spot in May 2024 after ******* isting a GM search that led to the Blue Jackets hiring Don Waddell as president/GM.
Davidson's contract ran out June 30.

Unless something changes soon, the Blue Jackets are poised to let their unsigned veteran free agents explore the open market.
If so, they could lose Boone Jenner, Mason Marchment, Erik Gudbranson and Danton Heinen to other teams while creating sizable voids in their own lineup. That’s three versatile forwards in Jenner, Marchment and Heinen, not to mention Jenner as the team’s captain , and Gudbranson is a stout defenseman with a right-handed shot and imposing size.
More Blue Jackets news: Columbus Blue Jackets in holding pattern with unsigned free agents
All are north of 30, which makes NHL GMs anxious about doling out contract extensions longer than three years, but there's always a risk to parting with the kind of predictable, experienced leaders in veterans that coaches always want in their lineups. It’s a trade-off that Blue Jackets president/general manager Don Waddell is poised to make with his unsigned vets.
If so, here's how the resulting holes can be patched:
