Saia President and CEO, Fritz Holzgrefe, shares insights into the current LTL freight market, including customer sentiment and Saia's strategic network expansion. Discover how Saia's investment in new terminals and workforce is cutting transit times, offering unparalleled service, and driving growth in competitive markets across the U.S. Holzgrefe also discusses navigating inflationary costs and balancing wage increases while maintaining a focus on customer value. #LTL #FreightMarket #SupplyChain
Saia has opened 70 terminals since 2017 as part of a deliberate, multiyear organic expansion that CEO Fritz Holzreif says is still far from its full potential. Since 2023 alone, the carrier has added close to 40 new locations and replaced or relocated another 30 facilities — a pace of physical network transformation that Holzreif said no other LTL carrier has matched in the same period.
The buildout matters because it has unlocked transit lanes Saia could not previously offer. Customers can now ship freight from Trenton, N.J., to Texas markets in three days, Holzreif noted — a direct result of the denser footprint. "Customers are coming to us and say, 'Oh, fantastic, you can now get my freight from Trenton, New Jersey to Texas markets in 3 days,'" he said. "That's significant. We couldn't do that historically."
"We are early innings of tapping the full potential of this business," Holzreif said, adding that the roughly 40 facilities opened since 2023 have not yet reached the profitability or density levels the company believes they can achieve.

The San Francisco 49ers on Friday made a handful of roster moves to bring in tight end Josiah Deguara and wide receiver Trenton Irwin.
In a pair of corresponding moves the 49ers waived cornerback Derrick Canteen and waived recently-signed TE Tanner McLachlan with an injury designation.
Deguara is a Santa Rosa native who entered the NFL in 2020 as a third-round pick of the Green Bay Packers. He spent four seasons in Green Bay, one in Jacksonville and one in Arizona. In six NFL seasons he has 12 starts in 77 games. Deguara has 53 receptions for 473 yards and three touchdowns as a pro. He has a real chance to stick on the back end of the roster depending on how many TEs the 49ers keep.
Irwin figures to be more of a camp body than an actual candidate to make the final roster. He was part of a workout that featured three veteran wide receivers earlier in the week. Irwin last played in the NFL in 2024 when he was with the Cincinnati Bengals where he spent his entire six-year career. During his Bengals tenure he hauled in 46 passes for 601 yards and five touchdowns.
The 49ers badly need WRs who can take reps in training camp and the preseason. As a seasoned pro it wouldn't be a surprise if Irwin does enough in camp to land a spot on the 49ers' practice squad.

TRENTON, New Jersey — Gov. Mikie Sherrill built her political brand around her time piloting helicopters for the Navy.
As New Jersey's governor, she isn't in the ****** pit anymore. But she's a frequent flier.
Sherrill flew aboard a State Police helicopter eight times over roughly three months, according to records obtained by POLITICO. In one instance, the records show, Sherrill used a State Police helicopter to fly from New Jersey to Maryland to attend a "black-tie" alumni event at the Naval Academy, her alma mater.
Access to the helicopter is one of the perks of being New Jersey governor, albeit an expensive one. As of 2021, it cost taxpayers approximately $2,500 an hour for the governor to use the State Police helicopter, according to press reports.
Prior New Jersey governors have faced scrutiny over use of the state chopper, especially when it is not explicitly for state business. Democratic former Gov. Jim McGreevey used it for personal trips, which resulted in the New Jersey Democratic State Committee agreeing to reimburse the state $18,200. Republican former Gov. Chris Christie was ensnared in "choppergate" in 2011 when he arrived at his son's high school baseball game in a State Police helicopter. He and the New Jersey Republican Party reimbursed the state $3,300 days later, but the flights raised questions around his image as a fiscal hawk.

New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: A lot of the big headlines to come out of Brian Cashman's media availability on Thursday were around the status and recovery of Aaron Judge and his rib injury. Also during that availability, Cashman noted that the performances the Yankees have gotten from the catcher position this season have been an issue. While he emphasized that he's looking to improve themselves in total as opposed to putting all the eggs in one position's basket, he acknowledged that catcher has become an unexpected area of concern.
The Trentonian | Greg Johnson: One annual event during the All-Star Game weekend festivities is the Futures Game played between some of the top prospects from around baseball. The Yankees were set to be represented in this year's event by shortstop George Lombard Jr. and pitcher Carlos Lagrange. However, both have been ruled out with injury. In their place, the Yankees will now send pitcher Ben Grable, an 11th-round pick from Indiana last year who is now in the Somerset Patriots' bullpen. He's much lower in the Yankees' prospect pecking order, but is having a nice 2026 season.
MLB.com | Byron Kerr: The Yankees' offense had one of their best performances in a while on Thursday when they put up 12 runs in a win over the Rays. A couple Yankees gave a bit of credit to a pregame speech from Jazz Chisholm Jr. ahead of that game. Jazz then played a big role in last night's win over the Nationals, so it's been a nice couple days for him.
Netflix: Ben Rice's competition in the 2026 Home Run Derby is set for Monday night. Barring any late substitutions, he will face Junior Caminero of the Rays, Jac Caglianone of the Royals, Jordan Walker of the Cardinals, Munetaka Murakami of the White Sox, Willson Contreras of the Red Sox, and two host sluggers: Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper of the Phillies. Caminero and Schwarber were runners-up in the 2025 and 2018 events, respectively, while Harper was the winner in 2018, the last time he competed in one with the Nationals. Rice will be looking to become the fifth Yankee to win the event, alongside Tino Martinez (1997), Jason Giambi (2002), Robinson Canó (2011), and Aaron Judge (2017).
MLB.com: Another event this weekend is the MLB Draft, which is set to begin later today. If you want to feel old, the sons of Andy Pettitte, CC Sabathia, Jose Contreras, and other famous names from around baseball will be among those available for selection in this year's Draft. And if you're curious about who the Yankees might take with their top pick (No. 35), check out Dan Kelly's article for us yesterday.

After another successful recruiting weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners are up to 25 total commitments in the 2027 recruiting class. OU currently has 13 pledges on offense, 12 pledges on defense, and zero pledges on special teams.
The Sooners earned commitments from WR Malahn Green, OL Jaxon Lawler, and DB Trenton Blaylock during their last major official visit weekend of the summer for the class. It was yet another strong performance on the trail from head coach Brent Venables and general manager Jim Nagy, who have been putting together quite the class so far.
While Oklahoma continues to be ranked highly in the '27 cycle, there's more to the story. When stacked up against the other 15 SEC teams, the Sooners are also bringing in a high number of blue-chip (4-and 5-star) recruits to the class as well.
According to Rivals, the Sooners have 12 blue-chip players committed at this time, which is good for third-best in the league, behind only Florida and Texas A&M. At 247Sports, OU's blue-chip number rises to 14, still good for third-best in the conference behind those two teams.
Most, if not all, championship teams in college football feature a certain threshold of blue-chippers, and Oklahoma has roughly half of their current haul that fits into that category at this time. Additionally, they're currently out-performing both Alabama and Georgia, who have combined to win the last six SEC **** les, and 11 of the last 12, when it comes to this metric.

Tavius Robinson found a new way to make an impact for the Baltimore Ravens, and this one had nothing to do with setting the edge or rushing the passer. The Ravens used the massive outside linebacker as a fake mannequin during Media Day, dressing him in one of the team's new uniforms and placing him in a position to surprise unsuspecting teammates and employees. Robinson stayed still long enough to blend into the setup before suddenly moving, creating some of the funniest and most startled reactions of the offseason.
Baltimore posted the video with the caption, "Tavius Robinson Pranks Teammates As Mannequin On Media Day," and the reactions quickly became the highlight. Trenton Simpson, Kyle Hamilton, and rookie edge rusher Mike Green were among the Ravens caught off guard by Robinson's commitment to the bit.
The setup worked because Robinson looked the part. At 6-foot-6 and 262 pounds, he already has the kind of frame that makes him stand out, and dressing him in full uniform as part of a display made the prank believable enough to fool teammates walking through the Media Day area. Once Robinson moved, the reactions ranged from startled jumps to laughter, with several players and staffers needing a moment to process that the mannequin was actually one of their teammates. Only the equally massive Calais Campbell and quarterback Lamar Jackson seemed unfazed by the prank.
The video also gave the Ravens a lighter offseason moment as the team continues mandatory minicamp and prepares for training camp later this summer. Media Day is typically centered on uniform shots, video content, player portraits, and promotional material, but Baltimore turned the setting into an opportunity to showcase personality inside the building.
Robinson's role in the prank also fits his growing presence on the roster. The Canadian edge defender is entering an important season for a Ravens defense that has added talent and competition around the pass rush. Baltimore has Trey Hendrickson, Mike Green, Adisa Isaac, Zion Young, Kaimon Rucker, and others in the edge group, making Robinson's summer one to watch as the team sorts through roles under defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.
