Marshall Faulk not happy with Southern's 77-6 money game beatdown to Houston appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Marshall Faulk was not happy with his team's resounding 77-6 loss to the University of Houston on Saturday. The matchup was one of several money games FCS HBCU programs played over the past couple of weeks, and it was Faulk's first money game. In comments obtained by Kevin Batiste, Faulk expressed his disappointment with the result and what it meant.
"That was awful. That wasn't really a game. That was a kind of a pre-season crash dummy test for Houston to work on all their good plays, and we didn't show up…I felt like, for the most part, the guys that we had in early, our guys that's going to play, I feel like they gave the effort. But let's just be real, okay? They're better than us. All right? They're better than us. They're ranked what, twenty-second? We're FCS. Everybody know what this is. Let it be what it is. We're gonna get better, we're gonna lick our wounds, and get ready to play some football."
He then talked about maintaining his players' health after the Houston game and heading into SWAC play.
"I don't know. I know we have a couple of guys dinged up, but for the most part, I'm gonna say yes. Listen, man, I took my guys out. I wanted to make sure that we were healthy. We got SWAC play coming up in two weeks, and as much as winning this game seemed important as it started, with the start that we had, I just needed to make sure — or ensure — that we got out of this game as healthy as possible."

Jackson State football quarterback Jared Lockhart could find no real-life comparison for wide receiver Nate Rembert's performance in the home opener.
Rembert finished with a career-high 179 yards on four receptions in 66-14 win for JSU (2-0) over Division II Edward Waters (1-1) at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Sept. 5. All four receptions went for more than 20 yards, and three were gains of 50-plus yards.
"He's like a video game," Lockhart said of Rembert. "Like NCAA. It's a blessing to have him."
The night was memorable for Rembert for more than just his standout performance. Rembert's NCAA career began at EWU in 2023.
As a freshman he led EWU in receiving touchdowns and finished second on the team in receiving yards to make the All-SIAC first team. His time at EWU built the foundation for his Jackson State career, which includes two All-SWAC honors.

Jackson State trailed Tennessee State 14-7 when Sallis went back to the locker room. He had five tackles at the time of his exit.

Since teams are now able to schedule up to 32 regular-season games with no multi-team event exemption/requirement—starting with this season—this page will focus solely on bracketed and other multi-day/multi-game events (think Players Era and round-robin tournaments). Since there's no need to set up scheduling arrangements masquerading as exempt tournaments, there's no longer a need for me to track what every single D1 program is doing.
Teams may also now participate in more than one tournament per season!
Fri.–Sun., Nov. 13–15: Normal, Ala.
2 games, triangular round-robin (The D1 Docket)
Alabama A&M (SWAC)
Cleveland State (Horizon)
West Florida (ASUN, reclassifying)
Nov. TBA: Honolulu (Rocco Miller)
Format TBD

There's a position group Alabama State football coach Eddie Robinson Jr. claims is deeper and more talented compared to last season.
Through the transfer portal during the offseason, the Hornets reloaded at the cornerback position — adding seasoned players with more height to the room.
It's hard to be critical of Alabama State's passing defense in the 2025 season. The Hornets finished second in the SWAC when it came to passing yards allowed, and middle of the pack when it came to passing touchdowns. But it was a position that saw a handful of combinations in the starting rotation.
Throughout the early part of Alabama State's fall camp, there has been a heavy rotation again, but for good reason.
"So it's a lot of options," Robinson told the Montgomery Advertiser concerning the position battle in camp. "It'll sort itself out, as they say, but I think the competition is what makes everybody play their best."

BIRMINGHAM — It's been a year and half in the making, and on Aug. 29 at Legion Field, Alabama State football will go to battle with Southern on the gridiron in the inaugural Birmingham Classic.
SWAC football has a 10-year schedule, and every two years a team will roll off the schedule. The Hornets and Jaguars knew that roll off was coming and utilized the relationship both have built with Birmingham to push for a Classic at Legion Field that wasn't the Magic City Classic.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, and the Birmingham City Council heard Alabama State and Southern, approving the Week 0 game.
Alabama State athletic director Jason Cable talked about the importance for the two SWAC teams to play a non conference game against a conference opponent, and generate revenue for both universities.
"Often times that doesn't happen in a non conference game," Cable said. "You go out and play a guaranteed game, and generate revenue that way. So, I hope this is a model that can be used for the future."

The 2026 HBCU college football season is right around the corner, with the SWAC announcing its preseason award winners on Wednesday, July 8.
Alabama State football paced all member institutions with a league-high, nine preseason all-conference selections.
Headlining those selections is Hornet quarterback Andrew Body, who was named the SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year ahead of the 2026 season. Body powered Alabama State to its first 10-win season in 21 years, and was named the SWAC's Offensive Player of the Year in 2025 after completing nearly 71% of his passes for 1,770 yards, 20 touchdowns and only one interception. Body also rushed for 518 yards and four touchdowns in 2025.
It's already been an eventful offseason for Body who was named the ASWA's Small College Athlete of the Year in 2025, was named to the 2026 Walter Peyton Award Preseason Watch List and was a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy.
The rest of the 2026 SWAC Football Preseason Awards were as follows:

Expectations have already been set for several Jackson State football players in 2026.
The SWAC announced its preseason awards on July 8, and defensive back Kam Sallis was picked as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. Five other Tigers also made the All-SWAC teams.
The awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors.
Sallis is the Tigers' most prominent returning defensive player. Last season, as a starting safety, he totaled 53 tackles with two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He made the All-SWAC second team.
Sallis is one of three players to make the preseason All-SWAC first team and the only defensive player. The others are offensive lineman Quaveon Davis and wide receiver Nate Rembert.

Two Florida A&M football players will accompany head coach Quinn Fordham Gray Sr. at Southwestern Athletic Conference Media Day.
Quarterback Isaiah Knowles and edge rusher Antonio Camon Jr. have been picked to represent the Rattlers alongside the newly hired head coach to preview the 2026 football season.
SWAC Football Media Day is on Wednesday, July 15, at the Sheraton-Birmingham in Alabama. It features all of the league’s football teams.
Knowles is a new addition to the Rattlers, transferring from NCAA Division II Albany State after winning back-to-back Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year awards. The graduate followed Gray to FAMU after spending three seasons together at Albany State, where they captured the SIAC Championship and were named Division II’s Black College Football National Champions in 2025.
Camon has been with FAMU football since the 2024 season. In 2025, he led the team with four sacks and added 19 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss as a redshirt sophomore. Camon initially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal but was convinced by Gray to withdraw.

Florida A&M women’s basketball is on the brink of a breakthrough.
At least that’s what newly-extended head coach Bridgette Gordon expects as she enters her fourth season at the helm this winter.
FAMU tasted success during the 2026 season, winning its first-ever Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament game by beating Bethune-Cookman in the first round of March’s tournament. Then the eight-seed Rattlers felt heartbreak a day later, being eliminated by top-ranked Alabama A&M in a closely contested 72-68 loss in Atlanta, ending with a 9-22 record.
But Gordon’s Rattlers may have gotten the biggest win of all.
They graduated four players, and did something unheard of in the current state of college athletics ― no NCAA Transfer Portal departures. That means FAMU will have key players from the 2025 season, headlined by its All-SWAC second-team point guard, Tahyjia Purifoy.
